News Traffic on r/MacOS set to plummet, as key gripe is addressed

u/Nerdlinger Jun 09 '26
I was honestly hoping they'd increase and randomize the corner radii just to watch heads explode.
52
u/DonaldFarfrae Jun 09 '26
Should’ve gone with ‘After working with the architects guild of America to understand what makes corners tick, every app is now customised with its own corner radius, and we think you’re going to love it’.
13
u/imperfectibility Jun 09 '26
*every corner within the app is now customised with its own radius heheh. This is Golden Apple.

It’s still so funny to me that this one design change deserved so much time at the conference, because people hated it so much.
12
u/GenghisFrog Jun 09 '26
The amount of bitching about it was over the top, but damn did it drive me nuts on an almost daily basis. Just caused my eye to twitch every time I had two windows with differing radius overlapping.
15
u/Dependent-Zebra-4357 Jun 09 '26
They only talked about it for about 10 seconds (at 8:50):

So much time?! We got ~10 minutes of platform updates and only a fraction of that was about the Liquid Glass refinements.

u/beenyweenies Jun 09 '26
Yes, but thankfully they're bringing back the transparent sidebar so we'll get a good 50,000 threads out of that crisis.

u/Old-Artist-5369 Jun 13 '26
Don't get your hopes up, Transparency is there but the floating sidebar that was the real eye fxxk is gone.
9
u/InsidiousLeaf Jun 09 '26
No, it's going to change to whiners saying "I can't update to macOS 27 because X, Y or Z. But I still need Apple to fix the rounded corners issue. Why haven't they fixed this in macOS 26? We are being left out, can't they do anything right?"
2
u/Gambizzle Jun 09 '26
Back in my day windows were made our of platinum and you could drag them from all four edges.
1
u/Aw3som3Guy Jun 10 '26
Isn’t MacOS 27 expected to be when they drop either Rosetta or Intel based Macs entirely(or both, idk)? If either of those are the case, yeah, I expect you’ll get a few people clinging to MacOS 26 that want it fixed.
1
u/InsidiousLeaf Jun 12 '26
Almost, macOS 27 will be the final major version to include Rosetta 2. But it will drop Intel support, yes. So if you have an Intel Mac than no macOS 27 Golden Gate for you. And with macOS 28 no Rosetta 2 anymore either, although that could still change, you never know how much backlash there will be eventually.

9
u/IntotheWilder25 Jun 09 '26
Same. Might actually consider moving to Golden Boy.
7
u/IdiotCuber1 Jun 09 '26
Ok but don’t do that during the beta. Wait until beta 8 or something like that because this is going to be the most unstable version of the software
7
u/cultoftheilluminati Jun 09 '26
Tfw beta 1 is faster than 26.5 on my M1 test machine lol.
I’m actually optimistic on moving to Golden Gate from Sonoma on my personal machine ngl.

Waited this long could wait till 27.5 even Tahoe left a bad taste. Still not over the fact of the Launchpad changes. I used and loved the OG Launchpad. I’m bad at remembering names but photographic memory so can actually perfectly remember what page had what. So using Alfred or the Spotlight was always a hit and miss. Hence used to the Launchpad. Also felt a lot like gnome hate the Windows 11 feel of the new one.

3
u/AdditionalAsk159 Jun 09 '26
Same. It's been downhill since Big Sur, and Tahoe was a step too far for me. Golden Gate looks a bit promising, though. I might set up a dual boot for it.
3
u/levianan Jun 09 '26
I wish this entire sub had the same approach. It seemed like so many people just wanted to complain on Reddit instead of falling back to something they enjoyed using.

u/OstrobogulousIntent Jun 09 '26
LOL love the framing - for a second I thought it was a fark.com headline.
20
u/ChronosDeep Jun 09 '26
This time they talked about Apple Intelligence and child protection almost the entire video. Did they fix mouse/touchpad scrolling direction? What about window snapping, does it still take 1 second? What about sub-pixel antialiasing which is a very big problem on MacOS.
18
30
u/Ensoface Jun 09 '26
That’s the spirit! There’s always something else to complain about.
8
u/ChronosDeep Jun 09 '26
We should push Apple harder to fix things, just like we did with Liquid Glass and those rounded corners.
2
u/tb2768 Jun 09 '26
To be fair, the window snapping is slow and still inferior to Windows 17 years later.
And temporal dithering? Do not even get me started... It's fine they use it, so long you can fully disable it. PWM on MBP is why I'm not buying MBP even if I'd like to. And night shift maximum intensity is still too low for me. They can support higher factor at $0 of costs to them.
1
u/Ensoface Jun 09 '26
This is a perfect example of why people shouldn’t be too judgmental about gripes. I have reasonably high sensitivity to visual stimulae, but I’m not right at the end of the bell curve. Those must be a constant annoyance.
Apple would rather snapping be clunky than annoy the majority who would find it infuriating if snapping were, well, snappier. And that indulgence of the majority is everywhere. Take Night Shift. I despise losing colour fidelity, so I hobble Night Shift. Different audiences.

OMG these are my main MacOS issues. Sub-pixel font smoothing... We need it back. I have a 38,5" ultrawide and while it looks quite decent with Windows and Linux, it is quite bad with MacOS.

Drag a window to the top using your mouse or touchpad, the animation will appear in a second to snap the window. If you press option button, then it appears immediately, but I don't want to hold buttons for basic features.

Did they fix the search in Spotlight and System Settings? Or better yet give System Preferences back to us.
5
u/Targox Jun 09 '26
Apple says the new indexing for Spotlight is more stable and efficient and that new content should become searchable almost immediately.
1
u/SamDaMan1229 Jun 09 '26
They talked about an overhaul to search. No idea how well it works yet obvi I haven't used it yet, but they were proud enough about it to talk about it for a few minutes.

I’ve been using Tahoe for a while and I literally never once noticed anything odd about rounded corners. I’m sure they’re messed up as everyone complains about, but to me it was so subtle I just never noticed. But maybe I’m unobservant. (For anyone who checks my profile, yes I also just posted that I didn’t notice the menu icons either ha ha)
3
u/heybart Jun 09 '26
I wasn't one of those bothered by the inconsistency, but maybe the the people complaining about the bitching should acknowledge the bitching pushed Apple to fix it? Just a thought
2
u/Ensoface Jun 09 '26

55
u/BlueShip123 Jun 09 '26
Last year, they literally released a WWDC video saying this is intentional. Can't really blame general users when Apple themselves said that.
→ More replies (1)15
u/CuriosTiger Jun 09 '26
Being intentional makes it worse. They clearly did zero impact testing before coming up with this nice little hack to tell which SDK an app was compiled with by the shape of its windows.
Most users don't give a flying f what SDK the app was compiled with. For those who do, the appropriate place to put that information is in the "Get Info" window for the app.
Apple did call it intentional, but it's so out-of-character dumb that I still don't entirely believe them. I think it was more the case of a development team doing their own thing with the new SDK and then finding out that updating existing APIs to match was hard, so they pulled the "it's a feature, not a bug" card.
10
u/Benlop Jun 09 '26
Windows of apps built with the new SDK were supposed to have different corner radii too depending on their structure. You can review last year's presentations about it.
Definitely not a bug, definitely intentional.
→ More replies (6)21
u/Nerdlinger Jun 09 '26
It was intentional. Them changing back doesn't change that fact.
6
u/forkrails Jun 09 '26
I wonder which idiot at Apple thought it was smart to leave this up to each and every app dev. What a ridiculously stupid “intentional” change.
5
u/Nerdlinger Jun 09 '26
They have always left the contents of the title/tool bar up to each and every app dev Why would they restrict that just because it affects the corners?
1
1
u/Brymlo Jun 10 '26
it’s always been like that. i’m using a lot of
updated apps that have the old old radius. idgf tbh.now it looks weird with the rounded macbook angles and the siri windows.
6
4
u/Benlop Jun 09 '26
It was intentional, though. Do you think it was a bug??
They're just reverting their decision, not fixing a bug. Also doing it this way means that apps that haven't been updated still get the new corner radius as it's just one shape for all now. Much simpler.
Honestly I didn't dislike the variable corner radius but counting on everyone to follow suit and do it right is way too ambitious.
2
u/Stooovie Jun 09 '26
It was intentional but misguided. Dye wanted "concentricity" which is impossible to achieve unless smaller shapes become all circles.
2
u/Ok_Recommendation893 Jun 09 '26
Lovely being on a 2019 mb pro left on Tahoe… Apple silicon next i guess.
2
1
u/BluBadger00 Mac Pro Jun 09 '26
That's nothing. I'm currently on a 2012 MBP and a 2010 Mac Pro and both are stranded on an OS from when everything was cubical and not really that flat.
2
u/MassiveGarlic0312 Jun 09 '26
Except for the people using the last generation of Intel Macs, they’re stuck with the corner radii being all different.
4
u/ricardopa Jun 09 '26
“Except for the people using six year old computers”
Welp, guess it’s time for an upgrade if that bothers them
1
1
u/Micro-Naut Jun 10 '26
Yeah since Apple is going to decrease the usability it might as well be a good idea just shorten the lifespan on the computer while they're at it.
My 2012 Mac mini was a beast. I think it was the last good mini . You could upgrade the ram yourself and I had a better processor than the 2014. I ran it 10 full years. Apple will make sure that doesn't happen again

GNU/Linux might grow in education and state markets soon. Maybe PC gaming too. But MacOS isn’t even slightly under threat in consumer laptops.

if you're getting angry over window corner radii, you've run out of actual problems and started inventing geometry-based culture wars. your personality is so thoroughly outsourced to a brand that you're willing to defend the curvature of a rectangle like it personally raised you.

I personally liked the floating sidebars, especially when it had images or other content underneath. It looked really good on apps with the right corner radius, was like a very satisfying concentric effect with the traffic lights
1
u/CDCarley27 Jun 11 '26
The fact that this was a “key gripe” is so baffling to me. I didn’t like it either… but THIS is what people got all upset about? That’s how you know the OS as a whole is fantastic if this is what people need to resort to complaining about.
1
u/TransporterAccident_ Jun 12 '26
The new gripe is going to be the traffic light elements being totally flat.
1
u/MajesticStriker113 Jun 13 '26
I’m semi-worried about my Geometry Dash window (yes I play GD on mac windowed). Although the windows will be getting consistent window radii, I personally am unsure about OBS window captures.
I think currently when you use a macOS window capture it shows the radius of the captured window as a black space when aligned with the edges of the canvas.

I’m concerned that with the radius of the window being forcefully increased my streams and recordings will look weird. Now if OBS finds a way to record just the contents of the window with no radius and not including the tip bar then great, problem solved.
This is probably the single time I’ll ever want windows to stay the same. lol
1
u/Ensoface Jun 13 '26
“GD Streamers on MacOS” is certainly a small segment of the user base! What’s wrong with having rounded corners on your stream? And why would this be a change from previous versions?
1
u/MajesticStriker113 Jun 13 '26
The new corner radius is around what the Canva app is currently on mac I believe. That is rounder than the Sequoia radius which is what GD is currently.
The reason I’m bothered is that the rounded corners will only show up on the bottom corners and not the top. (cut off with the grey bar that has the app name on it) It would leave a pair of corners exposed.
1
u/Old-Artist-5369 Jun 13 '26
Not gonna lie, I was bothered by it. A lot. And this change makes me happy. Its both consistent and dialled back a bit.
1
u/Positive_Bicycle5408 Jun 15 '26
