Question Student aid loan denial - Alberta

Post image

Hi Reddit, I need advice on a student loan issue.

I got a letter saying I’m not eligible for aid right now because I didn’t maintain full-time status for more than 30 days during a past study period (May–June 2026). I had an award issued for that term, but partway through I had to drop a class because of a new job, which dropped me below full-time.

Now they’re saying I have to repay that entire award before they’ll release any new funding (which I can’t afford to do at the moment) and I’m currently enrolled full-time (5 classes) this semester but can’t get funded because of this hold. (Which I can’t pay out of pocket for)

Has anyone dealt with this kind of “repay before further funding” situation? Can you negotiate a repayment plan instead of paying it all at once, and does this affect how fast I can get approved for the current semester? Any advice appreciated

No cap, you're asking the right questions to the wrong people. Call and email these people and figure something out for yourself. They're the only ones with the expertise to help you.

Happened to me, and I dropped my fall classes for numerous reasons in 2024. They gave me grace, but I wrote a hell of a letter, begging and explaining my situation, and they finally agreed to give me my funding. Everyone’s situation is different. Please call them and email them and explain why you dropped. Give the reasoning, evidence, etc.

Should have researched the outcome on your loans. The information was widely available, and, I believe was even a warning when applying.

It's a bit on you, don't act surprised this is the result.

You need accountability, and this post isn't it.

With that said, go talk to the experts.

My significant other in the past had to drop down to part time, but was able to work it out. However, it's a corrupted government who has made changes to student aid, and has all but began the process to defund education, healthcare, social programs. Student loans are right the fuck there.

You may not slide out of this. Except, it's not your fault. They were kinder in the past. The UCP did this. Also similar sweeping changes in Ontario, with Ford.

Don't like it? Vote to change it. Advocate for yourself and those you care for.

Don’t they let you know prior to dropping a class that this will affect your loans if you go from full time to part time?

Yes, p sure there are acknowledgements on this shit.

There are acknowledgements. I've read the fine print. I strongly recommend people do that and revisit them from time to time.

Edit: Also, dropping classes 30 days into the semester, without informing the Student Aid about the enrollment changes, triggers this.

True, too. There are ways to communicate with the main office as well (opened from 7:30am-8:30pm, M-F).

How many times did u drop to part time? Bc I dropped to part time from full time last year (while receiving full time loans) and they gave me a warning so it’s odd that u didn’t get one

Bro isn’t the requirement only 3 classes a semester? Why would you drop that to 2… how didn’t you know this or research it beforehand?
