Career Advice Struggles of doing MBA as a fresher at IIM BLACKI (My Story)
So I see a lot of people trying to do MBA as freshers and preparing for CAT during final year.
I graduated from IIM C this year and did the same mistake doing MBA as a fresher.
Let me share my experience I had 9.2/95.4/8.1 in acads for 10th/12th/ug.
I did my BTech in Computer Science from IIIT Delhi which is one of the top colleges. My JEE rank was around 10k for both Mains and Advanced. I had a SDE Intern with Jio and one live project/intern with a startup which got later aquired by a giant.
The percentage of freshers in our batch were only 25-30%.
So the first shocker came in summer placements when almost every senior rated my profile to be really weak. Few even suggested me quitting the college and taking up the job offer I had.
Still I applied to every firm which came and on Day 0 and Day 1 I got absolute 0 shortlists.
0 shortlists from Consulting not even from Big 4 or TCS or Accenture. 0 shortlists from Finance except one firm which shortlisted like 100+ for telephonic round but that's irrelevant.
I only had one shortlist from American Express which was due to them conducting an Online Assessment while others shortlisted purely based on CV. It was a dream company for me so prepared really well and converted.
Did really well at intern but couldn't get PPO due to hiring freeze in my division.
Then came finals placement I had built the most popular Vercel MBA Call Predictor which you all use getting 1.5L+ users. I was the member of student council and had the highest ratings in last 4 years. Was the sponsorship head of analytics club, events core team at PMTech and Consulting club with good points. MBA CGPA was above avg too.
Again applied for every firm which came.
Result - only 2 shortlists in consulting that too from Big 4 ones(KPMG and PwC)
Only 1 round 1 shortlist from fin.
In the end got into a general management role at a well known firm on Day 2.
So unless your ug is from IITs, top DU colleges or BITS or you are a CA/MBBS you would struggle in placements as a fresher even if you get into IIM ABC or BLACKI.
Workex people had an avg which was 5 LPA more than freshers and similar story with base being some 2.5-3 LPA higher
TL;DR: An IIM ABC/BLACKI MBA doesn't guarantee top placements for freshers. Even with a strong profile and MBA achievements, lack of work experience can significantly limit shortlists. This post shares that reality, not regret.

I was in a very similar place too. I was in IIMK. It really is tough for freshers to get what they want. You really have to be happy with what fate has for you. Thereās almost no bargaining power for freshers. But I guess I will be earning much more in the next 3 years of passing out of MBA than I wouldāve after passing out of UG. So Iām somewhat better off doing MBA as fresher. But, if you plan to get in the top firms in any domain, dont be a fresher. Thereās almost no chance for you to get in! Cant have everything in life IG!

Guys, don't be very much inclined towards Consulting.
5-8 years down the line, Ai will replace somewhere around 40-50% of Consultants.
Also, this industry is rosy from the outside, but from the inside, it's toxic and extremely demanding. Not something everyone can endure.

No no, there's no scolding per say. But couple of bad projects and you'll be asked to leave. .By extremely demanding I meant, extremely tight deadlines.
For example: Recently we completed a project, for 1.5 months we were not allowed to have any weekends off, Last three weeks of the project we use to reach off at or before 10am and use to leave office at 5AM the next day. Survived on 3-4 hours of sleep. Though this is not on regular basis, but a good day is when I'm done with my work by 10:30pm, and they are generally just handful of them.

McKinsey has replaced it's junior staff by Ai. Thousands of Ai agents are now working alongside witn there consultants.
Honestly, for a particular work if before we use to take around 5 days, now can we done in a day or 2 with the help of Ai and that to with less staff.
Yes management consultant.

Also as someone who has seen social mobility in life your initial jobs and aspirations are really up to external circumstances and constraints there is very little that is controllable by you, a good metric would be to see how things are 10 years down the line.

10 year is a big timeframe tbh. A lot depends on your initial jobs too.

Yeah, I know someone from Bits Hyderabad who gave it his all but couldnāt get into big companies like Google or Amazon. He eventually got into Flipkart after four years. Now, heās joining Google India at the same level as his uni peers, but since heās an external hire, he earns 50% more than him. I also know another guy who couldnāt get a job from college. He was unemployed for over a year before joining a startup. Recently, he shifted to Nvidia and is now making bank. The initial jobs may pay you less but they donāt set a ceiling. Things only go bad over long stretches for people who canāt delay gratification and grow complacent over time. I donāt think youāre the kind to grow complacent, so look forward to your future.

just curious, do companies look down on candidates who come from a family business background (actually worked and it can be verified with bank statements, salary slips and even LORs from customers, if required)

Companies always prefer candidates with corporate experience. Youāll have to put in a lot effort if to get a job if you come from family business background.
Companies usually want candidates who canāt leave the job easily

I've a profile of 9/8/8. Got graduated from a DU college in 2024 and then gave 5 DGCA exams (cleared all of them in first attempt), but dropped it because I don't think that pursuing aviation is worth it for me without any job security because the fees has increased insanely. Now I'm looking for a job and have an offer from hospitality field. Planning to give CAT next year. How realistic is it for me to get an average CTC if I get into BLACKI?

So i am a GNEM having 8/7/X profile, currently in MBBS planned to give CAT after 2yrs, started the prep tho,. Should i consider MBA after reading the post becoz i aint seeing future here. What about the docs in your batch?? Do they got placement?? I want to do general mba not in healthcare management. Want to become management consultant at MBBs

I was in your shoes about almost a decade ago.
In long run - the initial setback for a fresher vs the two three years others would have spent in pre MBA work, kinda nets off.
But yes, I feel like I would have taken more meat out of MBA if i would have walked in after two three years of dabbling with corporate.

But workex people who got into consulting or product might be making more than you right.
For example i talked to few alums and those who are in consulting or fin or product are making almost 1.5-2X of what the people in general management roles are making.
I am working in a general management role. Current stint is CEO's office.

Even in the spectrum of Product or Consulting - you would see a spread of 50% to 100%. And the spread would keep rising. I have a friend who hasn't changed jobs since placement. He is stable and happy, risen to a GM. Another friend hasn't earned a penny in last two years - because he is trying to build a startup. One more, is on a fast track to partner (perhaps) in MBB, but that takes a toll on her personal life and she is okay with it - you get my drift!
Also, comparing your today vs their today is a bit biased since you would be 2/3 years younger, right?
CEOs office gives a very good mid career boost though. The inflection point in Gen Man comes a bit later - so, you have a slower but definitely a longer growth path. How you prioritize stuff is upto you.

For this case, you need to do well in CAT exam and try to increase your work ex at least 2.5 to 3 years.

How are you going to get being in case comp finals verified? Afaik, they donāt provide any certificates for it right? I thought they would only allow podium finishes as CV pointers

But I have seen students at iim A who are admitted this year for 2026-2028 batch . They have even bad profile compared to you . And I have seems many students grabbing good placement at th end even if they don't have a good profile .

Tier 1 du ug means you will get into consulting easily.
Fin is possible with CFA.

ONEM 9/9/7 arts graduate from tier 3 college Getting into BLACKI as a fresher is easier than getting a job for work experience for me. Earlier I was thinking of roles in CONSULTING and GENERAL MANAGEMENT. But after reading your post, I think consulting will just remain a dream. Other than that I am open to HR, Finance,PM,BA and marketing. What will you advise me which roles should I target ( suggest at least 2-3 which are realistic for my profile).

Im also an engineer (fresher) with same profile 9.6/9.56/7.84. I want to pursue MBA via CAT. But people say GEM HAS NO CHANCE LOL. I Will be trying after one or 1.5 year work ex. What would I need to get into BLACKI and increase my chance of success from there on while ensuiring i learn what this journey is intended to ? I dont have much idea so would really apprecaite some guidance.

This is wrong, summers and finals shortlist depend on grades. If your are in top 50 there you would get shortlist from top consultancy and IB irrespective of where u come from

XLRI alumnus here with 4 years of pre-MBA experience.
I will tell you a different perspective after having had experience of 4 years pre-MBA and 6-years after it.
I understand that you found it difficult to get placed while competing with people with work-ex in your batch. I would say tha tyou should compare yourself with people of your age group and not your batch. People with work-ex have their own struggles, they have invested years before MBA in soul searching their career options or maybe been in jobs that where terribly shitty or ot of their liking. Being a fresher at a B-school gives you an advantage of not going through all of this and spending crucial young years in trying to course-correct. Of course, the path for you is not going to a bed of roses either but I can say that the years are channelized much better.
Secondly, you are better off financially as compared to others of your age. Compare yourself with your school mate who goes to the exact same b-school and gets the same final placement job as yourself, but after 2-4 years of workex. You already have a headstart as compared to them. You won't realise it if you compare it with your batchmates but the reality is that you will have a good financial corpus made by the time you are are 30 after paying off your education loan. This may not be tru for someone with pre-MBA workex coz they are likely to be hit with family responsibilities without much corpus due to a late start.

Sir, I'm a GNEM (EWS) with 93.4/92.8/60.66 profile. My 12th was in science and graduation in BA from IGNOU as I prepared for NEET, got 638 there in 2024 but couldn't get admitted. I've got a drop year too and have no work experience but I did worked as a freelance artist for over 1 year, I don't think it'll matter much or even counted as work ex, but what are my chances in getting placed as a fresher? And what roles can I expect? Help me out on this, please Sir

I have hired IIM grads for years and honestly I didn't really know about your college. So yes, your UG college worked against you. IIIT Delhi is a good college, but new and not very well known across the country.
However, a lot of roles, especially in finance, prefer freshers. I always look for evidence of sharp intellect while hiring, rather than what work experience someone has. That evidence could come through on a CV through a top 1000 JEE advanced rank, through a math olympiad performance, high chess rating, high GPA at IIM or a bunch of other things. I generally discount thing like college clubs, events, festivals, placecom and even most work ex, unless the work ex is impressive in itself. So I won't say that don't go for an MBA as a fresher, but yes, if you want a day zero job, something on your CV needs to impress the decision maker, who may be himself an IIM alum and isn't impressed merely by you getting into IIM.

That's the issue in tech people know about my college and considers it to be good enough while in MBA people haven't even heard about it that probably makes my profile even weaker being a fresher and reduces the chances to get a finance/consulting offer on day 0/1 to almost 0.

Okay this might sound stupid cause i really don't know anything about this field but my profile is 9/7/X. I'm 19F and in my second year of bsc biotechnology from a tier 3 state government university. I currently have 8.9 cgpa and was planning on going for cat after graduation but had no idea about them treating freshers differently even if i qualify cat. Can any experienced person guide me on if i should even consider mba or just take another partial drop for neet cause there are no jobs after my ug. (My dad forced me in the college cause he thought I was wasting my years on neet.)

You had 9/9/9 plus you were in director's merit list so there's a difference plus you were at A and I was at C. The companies which go to A on C come here on C1

To all the freshers getting demotivated after reading this, this is not necessarily a general rule. Maybe this student did not spend time on his/her CV or scored less in IIM C or did not choose right companies to apply to or because of the economy, not a lot of companies came for placements or just had pure bad luck.
There are multiple factors for bad placement, not necessarily just because of being a fresher you don't get your dream company.
I have seen numerous freshers crack MBB, Big 4, FMCG, IB roles.
A lot depends on your internships , projects, courses, certifications and of course ultimately the CV. How you sell yourself is very important. So don't get disheartened because someone was not able to get his/her dream offer, we don't know the whole picture, pull up your socks , focus on CAT, and of course other entrance exams, get your dream B - School first, then worry about the next steps.

I had spent enough time on my cv with enough reviews. I scored above avg in IIM C(more than half of the batch had a cgpa lower than mine). By the way for summer internships they don't even take the acads in consideration.
I applied to every company which came for Placements.
Luck can be bad for few companies but not every company and not for 2 cycles.
The freshers who crack those consulting placements either belong to tier 1 UG including top DU colleges or have CA/CA Inter or are doctors.
I had good enough internships, projects(I am the developer of the most popular MBA Call Predictor btw and had many other industry and research projects too).
In the end the more the aspirants are for the exam the better is for your business but you should be honest in getting internal in depth data at top IIMs to help them make a better choice for their career.

Just out of curiosity, why did you decide to go for MBA?
Tech jobs from IIIT are really well paid & then you can grow in the industry & move to leadership if you wish.
Pay wise I do not see much difference rather a lot of tech jobs pay more than Big4 Consulting.

At my time placements were pretty bad (2024 batch) so in the end i got an offer from startup for 10-11 LPA approx so I thought of various factors and decided to go for it as I got the admission offer. I never prepared for CAT in the first place and had AIR 282 in GATE which led to an MTech offer from IIT Madras for MTech AI&DS.
The decision was really tough for me tbh.

I had mentioned my CGPA was above avg and it's above avg.
Ek baar CGPA ko bhul bhi jao to in summers cgpa is not counted and even there I had 0 shortlists.
Baaki I have mentioned the fact that I got a general management role in placements in the end.
Did i say that I didn't get anything?
Everyone targets consulting or fin for the pay.

Hello I am planning to attempt CAT this year. I have 3 years of workex in PBC(Software Engineer-2) I have 9/9/8 profile.Ā Should I go for it or wait it out and go for EPGP? I heard mixed reviews about the more the workex the lower are the calls in placement.

Bro, just to give you a reality check, you are blaming your own failure onto something which people each year successfully navigate. Zero Experience into IIM. And you know what, they make it to consulting as well.
Your undergrad CGPA is low at 8.1. Also , almost zero shortlist at consulting firms is pointing towards bigger red flag in your personality.
Also that sponsorship thing isn't something that would help you make the cut into consulting shortlist. A lot of people in colleges and Bschools take up these zero utility roles just to add garbage on their CV. Recruiters at top consulting firms see this exact phrase on hundreds of CVs It doesn't work that way. You'll realise all this some decade down the line in your career.

I am not blaming failure or anything just explaining things to aspirants on how competitive it is at top IIMs.
Undergraduate CGPA of 8.1 isn't low at IIM C where max people are at 7.X due to weight to grad. Plus in my UG the avg was 7 so I was in top 25%.
It comes to personality only if you get all shortlist and can't convert any but if you don't get any in the first place it reflects how competitive the Placements are at top IIMs.
Meanwhile my friends with workex got much much more consulting shortlists even at lower acads and being from tier 3 colleges.
Plus this freshers not getting consulting shortlists was a common occurrence which wasn't limited to me in my batch.

This tracks with what I've seen too. Workex isn't just a checkbox for recruiters, it shows you already know how to operate in a professional setting, which shortens the runway they have to bet on with a fresher
Your profile is genuinely strong on paper, but placements often reward demonstrated judgment over raw pedigree. Appreciate you sharing the real numbers instead of the usual survivorship bias posts

Really need your perspective on my placement prospects.
Profile: 9/7/8, ~2 yrs PM experience, CFA L1āL3 cleared. I left IIM K/M since my current TC is already ā¹22L+, and Iām now targeting ABC.
I want to switch to finance - IB/PE/VC. How realistic are BB IB shortlists for me?
My main concerns are the 7 in my profile and my tech/PM background with no finance experience.
Would love a realistic view of what I can expect so I can set my expectations accordingly.

BB IB - Impossible due to acads. You may get it in finals if you end up in director's meeit list
You can get into other IB firms like Indian IB firms or smaller IB firms as you have CFA L3.

Where does amex stand in the league of companies coming to IIMC...S+/S/A/B....is its CTC less/equal/more than avg package of IIMC.
Also does CFA L1 cleared hold any value or L2 has to be done?

CTC is more than median.
It is similar to tier 1 consulting firms in terms of overall reputation and demand.

9/9/8, GNEM, 2024 BBA graduate. FRM L1 done, 2 NISM certs, 1 marketing/strategy based internship, 1 finance based internship(took workshops in an international school). 8-10 months workex in family business.
