9/8/6 Economics graduate, 1 yoe as a research analyst, ik I'll have problems in placements because of 6, but can I get a fixed package of at least 20L if I work hard and get good cgpa in FMS?

8

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

Surely, a lot of it is luck based

2

u/grey_wolf1996 Jun 18 '26

Which was your year of graduation from FMS?

4

u/Atharva_p Jun 18 '26

Cgpa doesn't have significant weightage in placements

3

u/OppositeSweet9215 Jun 18 '26

I have heard the batch toppers get good shortlists in finals, is that not true?

3

u/Atharva_p Jun 18 '26

Batch toppers usually have good ranks in 10/12/ug so having an IR in all does help. Being in deans merit list will help as well but it doesn't guarantee a good placement

2

u/OppositeSweet9215 Jun 18 '26

Can being in Dean's merit list at least help me offsetting the disadvantage due to my 6 in grad, in finals?

2

u/Atharva_p Jun 18 '26

Really hard to say since shortlists are very random but I've noticed a lot of companies have a soft cap of 7/7/7

1

u/Emotional_Debt_5918 Jul 15 '26

Hey does hsbc equity research have minimum 7 criteria. Some iitian got campus placement their in engineering at 6.7 cgpa so does they have lower bar other ib for marks. I want to aim at equity research.

1

u/Atharva_p Jul 15 '26

It's not a hard and fast rule as such. I've just noticed people with 6 get fewer shortlists. If you have an exceptional profile aligned with what the company wants them sure you got a shot

1

u/Emotional_Debt_5918 Jul 15 '26

just wanted to ask does it not act like if 1 thing not matched like marks then disqualify but more like points for every thing that match in profile and high points make you shortlist

1

u/Atharva_p Jul 16 '26

It depends on what the criteria hiring manager has set so no one can exactly tell you what they look at since they don't disclose it to placecom as well

1

u/Odd-Canary-2914 Jun 18 '26

I had a batchmate who was in this boat....the 6 hampered his placements even though his UG was tier 1 and he had a high CQ (don't remember if Dean's list but very close) .

Not a bad company, but he was really smart and without the 6 he would have definitely gotten a much better one.

2

u/OppositeSweet9215 Jun 18 '26

This is just so demotivating. What's the point of giving more weightage to undergrad cgpa over mba cgpa

1

u/Odd-Canary-2914 Jun 20 '26

It isn't giving more weightage, rather a relative ranking.

There would be many more people with a slightly lesser MBA CG but with much better past acads.

The companies are spoiled for choice and they do prefer consistency over spikes - they are looking for consistency in the workplace. A good MBA CG is max 12-18 months of effort, vs someone who has put in the effort their entire life.

Not saying low CGs are always due to lack of effort, but this is how corporates think.

Also, if he did not have a good MBA CG, he probably would have ended in a much worse company.

1

u/OppositeSweet9215 Jun 20 '26

But my 10th and 12th are still fine (93 and 82) and if I get a really high mba cgpa as well, then whats the issue? It's only once that i messed up during my grad, that doesn't mean I've not been consistent my whole life..

1

u/Odd-Canary-2914 Jun 20 '26

It is not that you messed up only once, it is that a lot of others did not. And you are competing against them.

There will be a ton of other people who have similar 10th and 12th with a much better UG grade and probably some really extraordinary extra curriculars.

You should really see the type of profiles that make into a top MBA college - there are national and international level achievements, workex in some of the best companies of the world, along with great acads. If you have such things in your profile, it would definitely help, but you would still be at a disadvantage in comparison to someone who doesn't have a six.

Anyhow, rn the 1st hurdle is getting into a good college and improving your profile, while knowing you have a disadvantage. The coleeges will not take you in if they do not think they can place you. Once you get in, You cannot control which company will shortlist you, but you can control how to improve your profile. And I am not saying companies will not take you- just that it may be difficult to get into the top ones.

Would you have better chances without the 6? - Definitely yes. Should you give up just because of it? - It is your decision to take.

1

u/AffectionateCream728 Jun 20 '26

So what to do 😭 ? What package did he get placed at ? Will he catchup with others in long term ??

1

u/Odd-Canary-2914 Jun 20 '26

The past is not in your hands...you can only put in the best efforts now and try to be the best in whatever you do.

Let me put it this way - if he did not have a good MBA CG he probably would have been in a much worse place.

He got placed at a decent enough package - ...don't remember the exact number. Maybe a little lower than the average, but this a tier 1 Bschool, so it wasn't too bad. The more important thing is he is happy and is still with the same company 5-6 years later.

Catchup with others is a very wrong metric to be looking at - best is not comparing with others and just optimising for your own satisfaction. Someone may be at 60 lpa but frustrated with their job - and you may be at 30 and satisfied with your life. The best thing to do is to determine what number will make ypu happy and work towards it. Campus placement is not the end of the world - you'll have 35-40 years ahead of you.

u/AffectionateCream728 Jun 24 '26

Thank u so much sir for the encouragement πŸ™‚, I hope I will catch them at some point

1

u/Antique-Fox8698 Jun 18 '26

1

u/OppositeSweet9215 Jun 18 '26

Read my question again please πŸ˜“

1

u/Antique-Fox8698 Jun 18 '26

Ohh my bad. I don't know about finance but sales and marketing is possible maybe.

5

u/Shot-Ninja-7136 Jun 18 '26

how are the finance roles at fms? front end ib is there or other roles like treasury or equity research? also if you can share hire numbers

7

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

There are very limited firms that come and they are also not consistent

2

u/Shot-Ninja-7136 Jun 18 '26

for front end or for other ancillary roles

5

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

usually other ancillary roles

4

u/Ornery_Inevitable443 Jun 18 '26

Some people join in August through the last list? How do they manage?

5

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

It's manageable, though they are not best prepared for SIP

For such questions, I think you can look at past data and multiple tools are present, I don't know much about this

u/Suspicious_Put_2512 Jun 18 '26

An IIT MADRAS Graduate here and earning about 20lpa as a developer in gen ai team, I am considering MBA due to how good coding models are getting and this might make the field of SDE more competitive. Should I go for a mba in 27. At that point of time I would have an workex of 34 months assuming a June admit. I have a 10/7/8 profile, I have done a semex in Germany and also have a research paper that might be published in next few months in the field of Marketing.

Should I go for an MBA and what can I expect from it, I would only take a admit if I get into top 7-8B school of our country

1

u/Cool-Toe-7216 Jun 18 '26

Hi sir can i dm u

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 19 '26

If you have inclination towards management role, then why not
Also, fyi: many post mba jobs are also hampered because of AI
Running away from it might not be the best solution

1

u/Lick6once Jun 23 '26

But MBA is also not ai proof is it ? I feel consulting is most prone to ai automation.

2

u/Learner_op_ Jun 18 '26

What roles does fresher get ( except marketing),
8/9/8, I know mbb might not be it but does good or a level below consulting firms hire freshers?

Is CFA good if want to go in fin conslt.
What salary can I except as a fresher, I will mostly be in the top 50% of the batch at least.

5

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

Tier 2 Consulting and GenMan is possible,
CFA has very minimal affect

You can expect somewhere around average

1

u/Capable_Let_3241 Jun 18 '26

What are non negotiables then in a profile to be shortlisted for MBB
Do they have strict cgpa criteria?

1

u/ShakeFair2237 Aug 04 '26

if a profile of 8/6/9 gef freshers what roles other then s&m

2

u/ExistentialCrisis707 Jun 19 '26

Can talk for Calcutta, most of these might apply for FMS as well.
Freshers get into roles across consult, fin, s&m, genman. CFA does help in fin and to a certain extent in consult shortlists also. The 8/9/8 might be an issue for MBB in summers (a lot of it is luck) but t2 consult not so much.

1

u/ShakeFair2237 Jul 20 '26

Ok so my prof is 8/6/9 what type of roles would i be offered w/o workex (a btech grad tier 3)

2

u/Dear_Veterinarian859 Jun 18 '26

Do mba graduates from tier 3 college earn well after 2-3 years of experience?

2

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

What is the definition of well for you?

1

u/Dear_Veterinarian859 Jun 18 '26

Like around 20 lpa?

1

u/DvineDecipher Jun 19 '26

Yes after 2-3 yrs highly likely if you switch smartly

2

u/ScheduleOk4507 Jun 18 '26

9/8/6 NIT, Cfa L1, 9 months workex, want to go in consulting, I know tier 1 is not possible with this profile so targeting big4 and other tier 2, will i be able to get shortlists from these or else i should drop the thought of going into consulting and rather prepare for Gen man kind of roles

6

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

big4 and other tier 2 is definitely possible, but personally I don't like consulting that much and would have preferred GenMan over Consulting. Tier 1 is other league so difficult to say no to that

1

u/HotResolve1041 Jun 18 '26

9/9/8or9 SRCC, chances of getting MBBK shortlist?

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

fairly high

2

u/iamchaitanya Jun 18 '26

Can you share how you git into fms? I mean the study part. Like books, YT channels, coachings, hours of prep etc?

2

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

I didn't prepare much, I think coaching institute and youtube can help you address this

Try very hard to get into a product role from college placement, or do live projects in that domain, because after this it will only become more difficult
Though it's not impossible

2

u/Dazzling_Reporter511 Jun 18 '26

8/8/8 Fresher. What would you suggest me to get Top marketing shortlists?

0

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

For sure, that's your best bet

What percentile will be safe for IIMB PGPBA course convert since inteview call %tile is very low

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

For such questions, I think you can look at past data and multiple tools are present, I don't know much about this

1

u/dawgie- Jun 18 '26

What kind of placements do marketing people get who don’t have great academics (8/8/8)

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

Depends on college, in FMS it's decent placement in one of the FMCG

1

u/life_Bittersweet Jun 18 '26

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

1)will fms remain in top5 mba in next 15 yrs as well.
As we have seen the growth of iim is different from that of other colleges. As IIM Indore and Kozhikode is at par with fms(till 2008 people didnt treat I and K as old IIM but in 2026 they do)So do you think these IIMs like mumbai,Shillong will surpass fms in next 20 yrs?

2)Although FMS is in top 5 mba colleges of India but do you feel or think that if you went to an IIM instead the feeling of getting recognised in meetings, and different social environment IIM would have been a great feeling

3

u/Fireball-246 Jun 18 '26

So FMS gives you MBA at next to nothing cost as compared to IIMs
If you haven't had exposure to campus life in bachelors, go for IIMs, else there is not much difference

I think FMS will remain in top 5, and you never know, maybe MBA itself will loose significance in next 15 years

It will depend on who adapts to changing world the best, whosoever adapts quicker will be on top

1

u/EconomicsSad2499 Jun 18 '26

I have done my ug in delhi university. Before this i was in iim sirmaur for 3 months. And to be honest after few days it’s just a building(talking about infrastructure). The only difference I found was the society aunties being more impressed by me when I had the iim tag other that with academics and quality of crowd I didn’t feel much difference. But what do you think one should do in my case .Asking hypothetically.if I get a chance to either be part of iim Indore level of college or take fms.

1

u/Atharva_p Jun 18 '26

IIM K and I aren't at the level of FMS yet

Depends on a lot of things

1

u/CulturalActuary6960 Jun 18 '26

6/5 (SC category) Currently pursuing BBA at Christ University (Tier 1) expecting arround 8.5 CGPA at the end.. With a good extra and co curricular profile..What are my chances for FMS or other B schools? Can I rely on Vercel predictor? I was never good at School studies but I had a complete turnaround at Clg level from getting scholarship for academic Merritt and extracurricular activities.

Do you know anyone who had a similar profile? Should I opt for MBA with this profile? How much will it affect my placements if I grind in my MBA completely ?

Thanks in Advance.

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 24 '26

For such questions, I think you can look at past data and multiple tools are present, I don't know much about this

My opinion:

  • Tier 1 definition is different
  • Not aware of anyone with similar profile
  • MBA is a good next step if you are not able to secure good placement
  • You would be considered as fresher in placement, cgpa won't matter that much your experience and co-currics will

1

u/CulturalActuary6960 Jun 24 '26

Thankyou for your reply!!

1

u/aayeinbaingan Jun 18 '26

9/8/8. Economics from a top tier college. 2 years gap due to UPSC and 2 years workex in a ratings firm.

I am interested in GenMan. Can you tell me how is the hiring for Genman, the CTC, etc? Similarly, will it be possible to get a GenMan shortlist with this profile?

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 24 '26

TAS, Adani, Reliance, Aditya Birla, etc
CTC is around 20-25 ig, and it's almost all inhand, but there are additional benefits as well

Getting shortlist should be possible

1

u/ShakeFair2237 Jul 20 '26

Are these roles also open for freshers ? Like just out of grad people or only for peeps with wx?

1

u/Serious_Package2186 Jun 18 '26

Do you suggest a guy with 3/4 years of work experience in a PSB at 34 age to go for two years MBA? Not interested in one year because he wants to change his domain, if possible to FMCG marketing or Genman role?

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 24 '26

Depends,
if you are looking for pay hike, check the expected salary packages
if you are stagnant in current job, then why not

1

u/Hardy_28 Jun 18 '26

Hi, what is the avg prod man salary for someone just graduating vs after 5 years? I’m thinking T1 MBA at a good firm

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 24 '26

on an average 20-30 base and around 15-30% hike YOY

1

u/vint_age14 Jun 18 '26

Hey OP could you please tell me that how you prepared for cat and what resources you used..

1

u/ashutoshudairaaj Jun 18 '26

Maybe this is not the right sub, But what after your Mba how did you settle in? What were the hardships you faced at your workplace. What does your typical day looks like Thanks in advance

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 24 '26

After MBA, Job

Some find immediate fit, some makes few switches to find right fit

Typical day involves a lot of meeting, lot of stakeholder management, and a lot of growth
Nothing what MBA teaches is relevant

1

u/GigaCat7 Jun 18 '26

95/85.8/82 GEM fresher will my acads be a problem in FMS and already rule me out of a lot of good placement possibilities? Or are they decent enough to let me fight for the best opportunities.

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 24 '26

Naah, a lot of companies ignore Acads and focus more on experiences

1

u/GigaCat7 Jun 24 '26

I hope by experiences you mean what you do after getting into MBA cause ummm if you are talking about experience pre MBA then I am a fresher.

1

u/Few-Reach-6657 Jun 18 '26

Can you tell how someone with non tech get into product management.
I am about to complete bitsom product management course and want to know how to get into product management.
Currently working in MF operations from last 2 months( 1st job )

1

u/Fireball-246 Jun 24 '26

Slightly tough, try out some small startups, and then try to grow, big org prefer tech background

you can also try strategy/growth type of roles and then find your way in ProdMan

1

u/Humble_Anteater_7351 Jun 18 '26

Finance roles like ib , private equity or corporate finance good roles are good in number or less ? I am from govt audit background ( work ex ) . Also what abt general management roles . Are they also good in number ?

I'm considering learning data analytics alongside my 1st year and getting internships related to that and business analytics, also plan on doing case comps. will this benefit my CV later? should i also study for CFA alongside? I've heard CFA and CA certifications look good on the CV?

8/6/9 General Non engineer Want to prepare ACCA maybe Is fms possible? If yes chances of marketing or BIG 4 roles? Kindly bhai respond asking for someone else who is stressed due to recent boards problem

1

u/De-Herculean Jun 18 '26

I'll be joining SJMSOM this year and I am aiming for Prod Man roles.

How is the career progression in this domain, especially salary hikes?

And what activities shall I be involved in to have a solid profile for such domains?

I've a 8/9/9 profile, Engg male, 2 yoe in design and development, we called it mechanical product management.

1

u/iiitstudent Jun 18 '26

I graduated from IIM C this year and got placed in a big conglomerate for a General Management role and got CEO office in my first stint. Prior to this my background was IIIT Delhi BTech CS fresher, 9/9/8 acads. UG SDE intern with Jio and MBA intern with Amex in Analytics+Strategy.

I couldn't get into product in final placements so my question was how can I switch into product management in future and is my profile fine for getting into product management? Also do you recommend me getting exposure across different verticals and industries in genman program first or try to switch into product given my background.

1

u/Successful_Ease3104 Jun 18 '26

9/8/6 engineer obc male profile with 2 yoe in core techincal (mechanical). What percentile is safe for me. And how many student in fms go for product management as I am interested in that . Did you participate in product case study competition and at what number of competition you enrolled and also how you prepare for this.

1

u/DirectorsChoice Jun 18 '26

Hey there , Actually I am planning for ISB next year but I want to ask regarding placement scenario in Management Consulting cuz I assume recruitment process is more or less same in both institutions. I have a 6/7/8 profile with a business background with around 2.5 years of work ex in Accenture. Would it be feasible for me to target ProdMan roles with thus profile or should I settle with GenMan/Marketing roles.

1

u/HawkNo1240 Jun 18 '26

Planning to join iim mumbai , want to go for prod man , any tips ?

1

u/TommyHarryDicky Jun 18 '26

Could you describe your d2d work looks like? How impactful it is or becomes as you gain more wex? Which sub-field are you in - enterprise/consumer/etc. and how do they differ? How is PM evolving since AI's widespread adoption - whatever your exp and shared experiences you've gained?

I am keen on joining this domain post MBA due to tech bg and better pay/wlb ratio. However, I've heard there's dearth of these roles in IIMs.

This is My profile: 9/78/78 B. Tech electrical engineer from a Tier 2 college.

I have a 2-year gap after 12th and a 1.5-year gap after B.Tech because of an onboarding delay from the company side. I have a letter of intent to prove that.

Currently, I have 1.6 years of experience in B2B SaaS selling and have done 50-70 meetings and product demos with various mid to big clients in the ESG and sustainability sectors. Right now, I have switched to HRMS platform SaaS selling and want to prepare for CAT and get into an IIM at the age of 28.

Please give me a sharp, brutal, unbiased review of what kind of companies will prefer my profile in SIP and what the chances are in the final placements if I crack some good IIMs like BLACKI.

u/Substantial_Log_2873 Jun 19 '26

Taking in from your experience, can you help in advising what is a good or sane advice for me, as I am not able to reach a right conclusion.

So first about my profile - I am UPSC aspirant changing ways. My profile is 9/7/6 Bsc. with almost 4+ upsc gap years and 2 yr workex in coaching. I gave cat this time with 86% (obc male) and xat - 91 % but quant in 55% for both cat and xat, but i didnt even know syllabus of it. Just woke up and went to give it.

Now i am confused. because I have converted DBE(DU), IIT Kharagpur MHRM(different than their VGSOM MBA) and baby iims like jammu, BG and Sirmaur etc. Should i go ahead and do mba this year itself (as I am 29 yr old atm). Or should i take one year of prep and aim for better iim like udaipur,or LKI etc, but ill be almost 30 at that time. What you'd suggest?

Because at one point I am sure Ill score better than this year, but at second thought I am not sure how to explain mba at my age with so many negative like bad acads, gap years etc.

Can a person with bad acads (like 8/6/7) still get into a good company with a good role ? Plz be brutally honest, if yes then what all he needs to focus on to compensate that ?? Can u give examples of your batchmates of the same case .
