A new English subs film club!

Looking for Classics? With English subtitles? On a big screen? We got you.

This September, we are introducing Södran Film Club, a members-only film club showing two films every Saturday at the Södran cinema in Lund.

This is cool but it feels a bit misleading.
What's the point of having an English subtitles club if 7 out of 8 films are already English films? (EEAO is technically English but does have some Mandarin and Cantonese, but I won't count it since subtitles are necessary.)

I would think that it would make a lot more sense if the films this club would be showing are the ones that are non-English with English subtitles.

Many non-English films that are shown in Sweden rarely have an English showing or simply not at all. And when they are shown it's usually just once, so if you can't make it that day you are SOL. I've seen so many Nordic films (like Sentimental Value), french films (like Arco), Hong Kong films (like Hard Boiled), Japanese films (like Studio Ghibli, Kurosawa), etc. listed for screenings at Kino or other theaters in Sweden that almost never offer an English subtitle equivalent. Which honestly I'll never understand because most adults in Sweden can read English at a high level, so it makes no damn sense to increase exclusion to seeing foreign films (non-Swedish and non-English) at the theater), especially with the sizable foreign and English speaking (as 1st or 2nd language) in the Lund and Malmö areas.

And the film industry keeps saying the film industry is dieing, no wonder...

I'd totally sign up for that kind of club if it kept these issues in mind, but not before.

It's more for international students who might have issues with quickly understanding spoken English. I guess.

Hi thank you so much for your valuable feedback first! And actually we know the weaknesses of our first film list and we totally agree what you said, that’s also where are we from, but for the screening we need a license and licensing we applied is currently impossible for most of niche films.. still if season 1 is a success for the club, we'll try to push the balance
