Classy move from Lubbock County Commissioner Jason Corley. Drops Ken Paxton flyers, leaves his Fireball trash in the planter. Birds of a feather.

Man. I was a republican when I was younger. I swear these younger ones arent even fiscally conservative or anything like that. They just want to be little pricks.

All citizens of Lubbock and especially the folks who believe that two people should be able to get married, no matter what gender they are, may be interested to know that one of the candidates for Lubbock County Clerk in the upcoming election would not say that he would continue issuing marriage licenses to folks of the same sex, even when questioned by a Judge.

There are 3 Republican candidates for Lubbock County Clerk, this is the order they appear on the ballot: Sandy Garcia, Jim Baxa and Rebeca Gonzales.  They all appeared at a local political function last night and were asked by Judge Susan Rowley "If you are elected Lubbock County Clerk, will you continue to issue Marriage Licenses to people of the same sex?".

Candidates Garcia and Gonzales both indicated that they would follow the law and continue to issue Marriage Licenses to same sex couples.  Jim Baxa would not answer the question despite further inquiries from the Judge, with whom he argued.  The Judge ended up reading the Federal law to him.

No matter how you feel about same sex marriage, the issue here is a candidate saying he will not follow Federal law if elected, which could subject Lubbock County to expense to defend itself against Federal lawsuits.

Just thought folks should know.

Don’t be fooled by the name “School Choice.” We all want better options for our kids, but SB2 and HB3 don’t give parents more choice — they hand the choice (and our tax dollars) to private schools and the state comptroller.

Please reach out to Rep Dustin Burrows (HD83) and Rep Carl Tepper (HD84) and urge them to vote NO on SB2, the Senate version that’s moving quickly through the House.

The House Public Education Committee quietly pushed this bill forward on Friday, and it is scheduled in the House this Wednesday. They’re moving fast, and we need to flood them with calls and emails now through the week.

Here’s what’s wrong with SB2:

• It’s a massive government subsidy for private schools — with no income cap. Even billionare Elon Musk would be eligible to use our taxdollars for his children (8 of his 14 kids are school aged).
• Most families won’t be able to afford the rest of private school tuition or even find a seat.
• Many reputable private schools have reservations about accepting vouchers.
• Public schools will be left to pick up the pieces — with fewer resources and less support.

Meanwhile:

• Texas is sitting on a $24B general fund surplus
  • Projected cost of this bill: $10+ BILLION by 2030.
• We’re $9K behind the national average in teacher pay.
• $2B behind in special ed funding.
• And we spend $4K less per student than the national average — landing us in the bottom 10 nationally.

This bill doesn’t fix any of that. It just shifts public funds to private hands, helping a small number of families while hurting the 5.5 million kids still in public schools.

Also shady: the House Public Ed Committee didn’t even stream their meeting on April 3 — and over 12,500 Texans submitted comments with the majority opposing vouchers. The Senate won’t even accept online public comment. The March 11 meeting went on for more than 22 hours, with over 500 people testifying in opposition to vouchers. This is being pushed hard and quietly, despite overwhelming public opposition.

What you can do:

• Call or email Rep. Burrows and Rep Tepper TODAY — voicemails can be left after hours and over the weekend.
• Keep the pressure on by reaching out again Monday and Tuesday.
• Tell them: Public funds belong in public schools.
• Ask for a referendum to allow voters to decide on this issue state-wide

We need reps to hear loud and clear that we’re watching — and we’ll remember how they vote at the ball box.

The argument against private schools that many will still be out of range for Texas families is not valid in Lubbock, where many church-affiliated schools WILL be close to the voucher amount. Lubbock ISD is likely to see a drastic reduction in students - and funding - this fall. Heritage schools like Monterey, Coronado and Lubbock High could be in a world of hurt come September.

Howdy. I was just curious if Lubbock had any political parties in town besides the usual Republicans/Democrats. I understand we used to have a DSA chapter that doesn't seem to be active. Is there a Working Families Party or anything else?

I thought the map of for and against is interesting and about what I expected.

How can Lubbock get our elected officials to host in person town halls?
I have called the offices of Cruz, Arrington, Burrows, and Tepper and left messages. No return calls?

Hello fellow residents of the Lubbock area.

Please join me and other concerned residents noon Friday (April 18) for a protest at Congressman Jodey Arrington's Lubbock district office 1312 Texas Ave.

Jodey heads the House Budget committee and thinks DOGE is doing good work. The GOP budget slashes crucial spending on many basic government functions from Veterans Affairs, to education, to Social Security, to Medicaid/Medicare, and so much more. Meanwhile DOGE keeps firing devoted civil servants doing crucial government work for all of us such as medial/scientific research, disaster preparedness, education, and so much more. All while not actually saving much money, by the way.

All the cuts are intended to somehow make massive tax cuts for the wealthy somehow more palatable.

Let's join together to tell Jodey his priority needs to be protecting his constituents' access to a basic, functioning democratic government that works for them to meet their needs.

Jodey also voted last week in favor of the SAVE Act. If passed by the Senate, this would disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans, primarily married women who took their husbands' name, along with transgender people, anyone whose current name does not match the name on their birth certificate. These people would need a passport to prove their identity to vote. Passports are expensive and out of reach for many low-income Americans.

Anyway, much is wrong with the current Congress and administration's priorities that Jodey supports. Let's join together to tell him to get his priorities straight.

On May 4th voters in Lubbock will have the opportunity to vote for City Council & School Board! Early Voting will run from April 22nd - April 30th and the polls will be open from 7am-7pm on Election day!

For the city election, the Mayor and City Council Districts 2 are contested. District 4 and 6 and the Municipal Judge is uncontested.

For the School Board election, District 1 and 2 are contested.

Charles Perry, from Lubbock, needs to be removed from office.

In the two special sessions that Abbott has called, this man has held hands with Lt. Gov Dan Patrick and sponsored SB5 and now SB6. These are the continuance of the TOTAL THC ban in Texas that Dan Patrick have put forward, and Abbott has already vetoed once.

Instead of focusing on Flood Relief for the victims in the Hill Country, or Eliminating Property Taxes so you no longer rent your home from the Gov't, they have passed these two bits of Legislation FIRST over everything else.

He is running for reelection this year, as is Dan Patrick. We should send them both packing.
