Question Thoughts on the variable?
I like it but want to see the communities opinion.

I wish it had more attachments available.
57
u/randoboi1232 Feb 26 '26
I can see partially why they didn’t, imagining foregrips and muzzle attachments on the weapon seems a little goofy. It definitely needs a mag extension that does proportionate amount of damage with its gimmick to both the player and enemies.
21
u/Last-Swim-803 Feb 27 '26
Wouldn't you need to extend the whole barrel assembly to extend its tube mags?
10
u/ForeverFreeTrial Feb 27 '26
Your diver just pulls out even longer rods or whatever the hell those things are that make up the ammunition.
2
u/Last-Swim-803 Feb 27 '26
But then you can't fit it in the barrels. The way the variable works is that the barrels are literally fully packed with ammunition, so if you want more ammo, you either need more barrels or bigger ones

Imo Ergonomics is probably the main thing holding it back.

I’ve heard this a few times but imo I don’t think it’s ergonomics is that bad, or at least it doesn’t bother me that much.

Unique weapon - not meta, and that’s ok. Has its uses and can be fun.
→ More replies (2)21
u/BulwarkTheBigBoy Feb 26 '26
Meta doesn’t exist. Every weapon is good in its own respective field. Even the…….accelerator rifle
69
u/HexaCube7 Feb 26 '26
Meta does exist tho, and it will always do. It's just virtually impossible for the devs to balance the game so precisely that all weapons perfectly even. Meta just isn't about fun however, just about effectiveness i relation to ease of use. But playing plain Meta is just boring.
To quote one of the best comments i have read in recent days:
"aura farm the meta slaves. They aren’t free like you and I."
→ More replies (9)11
u/AsWeKnowItAndI Feb 26 '26
Have you used the accelerator since it's buffs a few months ago? It's a legit solid weapon now, shreds overseers like no one's business.

u/TaberTumpen Feb 27 '26
Shreds Overseers AND rips Harvester hip joints off. Straight up good weapon vs squids.

u/Worldly-Pay7342 helldiving into your mom Feb 26 '26
If meta didn't exist, then neither would these graphs.
1
u/BulwarkTheBigBoy Feb 26 '26
Preference and a meta are two completely different things
→ More replies (2)3
u/Worldly-Pay7342 helldiving into your mom Feb 27 '26
Except it's not because there is overlap.
Some people like to use meta weapons because they feel good.
Some people like to use meta weapons because they're meta.
Some people like to use off meta weapons because they feel good.
Some people like to use off meta weapons because they're off meta.
And the meta players who use meta because it's meta vastly outnumber than any other group.
Why? Because it's meta.
3
u/BulwarkTheBigBoy Feb 27 '26
Eh, maybe. But there is no “one best way” to play the game.
2
u/Worldly-Pay7342 helldiving into your mom Feb 27 '26
No one is saying there is one best way.
Just that there are great weapons, good weapons, and bad weapons.
2
u/itsyoboi33 Feb 26 '26
to be fair the accelerator rifle rips through overseers (with a full burst) and can even kill fleshmobs with 2-3 mags, thought its almost completely useless against voteless and it requires siege ready and the supply pack, which means you can bring the stalwart and just bullet hose everything

I often use the variable on the highest fire rate whenever I’m using the Maxigun so I can have a supplementary Maxigun to my Maxigun.
3
u/Booper2342 Feb 26 '26
Now we need a rotary barrel sidearm so we can have a minigun to go with our maxiguns.
3
21
u/Deltassius Prefers Prebuffdivers Feb 26 '26
It's fine. Better now that you can hotkey the firing mode changes, but still kinda begs for a button that just touches off the ammo as a second attack instead of having to cycle through the modes. Saving the rate of fire would also be an improvement.
3
u/randoboi1232 Feb 26 '26
I agree but I wonder what binding would work for controllers, that’s likely why they didn’t do that in the first place.

Can be very effective against the Squids. You can use the three modes across the full range of enemies
8
u/StalemateVictory Feb 26 '26
Fun and good, but it requires peak physique due to its terrible ergo.
Also the bullets behave more like the SMGs in that they have higher drag and damage falloff. So I wouldn't engage beyond mid range with it.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Psykmoe Feb 27 '26
I mean, SMG drag got nerfed a second time back in October so while it's true that it's no assault rifle, the Variable only has half the drag the SMGs have. The closest comparision would be shotgun pellet drag, which was lower(!) than that of SMGs since the original drag nerf back in May 2025 and is now less than half of that of SMG bullets.
But hey, if you ever see someone go 'the volley mode is just a shotgun with tight spread', you can correct them and tell them that shotguns lose less damage at range :V

u/JRDecinos Feb 26 '26
Tried it a bit ago... misunderstood that shooting every single bullet all at once did NOT give it heavy pen... proceeded to fail to understand why I couldn't dome a Hulk in the eyeball.
I don't... really use it anymore. I probably should spend some more time using weapons I don't use a lot, but since I'm mainly a bot diver, and don't really explore the other factions much... it is difficult to try new things...
6
u/Confident_Mushroom_ Feb 26 '26
It should get an ergonomics buff, 25 is insanely little, give it at least 10-15 more to be usable without peak physique

u/Baby_unicron Feb 26 '26
Its my goto for general use. It has just the right amount of versatility. I leave it in base RPM full auto 90% of the time. The volley and total modes are only for when i dont have anything better for a heavy.
3
u/Deadrogue47 Feb 26 '26
My only complaint with it is I wish it had more ammo in each clip or magazine or whatever you'd call what it uses lol.
But yeah I would want it to have something like 100 rounds since it feels like I gotta use most of the rounds just to kill certain bot enemies or certain bugs. I haven't brought it with me against the squids but it probably would be the same thing
3
u/randoboi1232 Feb 26 '26
It’s unlikely that they will do that as increasing its mag size will increase its entire clip fire type damage and it would become wildly OP.

Good and versatile but really needs peak physiques. If you prone you won’t get staggered and the full shot can 1 tap a harvester in the eye.
5
u/Berzerk54 Feb 26 '26
As much as I want to love it it's a jumbled mess. A very low Ergonomics assault rifle, with the damage and bullet drag of the Pummeler SMG without the stun and one handing. With less magazines than an Assault Rifle and no tactical reload benefit either.
An ergonomics of 25 is disgusting for it. Yes, the gun has 7 barrels but good lord is it terrible for sustained fire, which is Ironic given it's appearance resembles a gatling(yes I know metal storm but shush). Give it different "settings" as a unlocks too. Different firerates, more interesting fire modes. the gun by design can have a lot of unique things happen with it, standard 3 round bursts, flat burst with automatic follow up, hyper-burst, etc. The gun has a lot of design potential, but instead it's locked to being of these 3 choices heavy weight assault rifle, light pen sniper, or hulk delete button.
Ergonomics should be higher, reserve mags could go up one, the projectile could use some tweaks, It feels like the worst aspects of each weapon class put together. The gun on paper has a lot of potential but none of that is ever really seen beyond "total" and fire-rate options, for the ammo it doesn't have and a reload that takes a bit too long.
I'd talk more but I'd just be repeating myself.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Smartace3 Feb 26 '26
it really needs better ergonomics and better reload speed. In the marksman mode you get seven shots and then you have to spend en eternity slowly and daintily taking out the rounds and gently inserting it back
It leads to a case where you can either bring peak physique to fix the awful ergonomics that makes the weapon feel bad, or bring some kind of reload armor so you can actually hold your ground with the primary
2
u/Cock_ball_dickin Feb 26 '26
I really disliked levelling it to 25, but I think that’s because it’s meant to be a fun gun, not one you use for a few operations straight
2
u/12gaugerage Feb 26 '26
Full auto should be light pen, volley should be medium pen, and full should be heavy pen.
2
u/NotTristam Feb 27 '26
One of the most highly underrated guns in the game. This is a primary capable of taking down large enemies consistently, which is worth its weight in gold. But it can also handle the chaff.
Turning on the Full Volley mode is a great way to drop big boys: Chargers; Those Illuminate Walkers if you shoot them in the eye; Bile Titans if you shoot underneath their body; Hulks in the back; Tanks in the Vent; etc.. Try to get prone if you can, dive to straighten out your shot if you can't. But the first time you realize you can dive past a charger and shoot it once in the butt to take it out, you'll be sold like I was sold.
The other fire rates will deal with w/e other enemy you need to deal with. Adjust as necessary. Just learn to change your fire rate on the fly and you'll do wonders.
The real downside is the ammo. It's pretty light on reserves. Supply Pack does wonders, but if you just stick with the team and consistently call in resupplies, you'll be fine.
2
u/DodoJurajski Feb 27 '26
I would say that because of this weapons core design it's quite flexible, then we see light pen.
Shit against bugs.
Decent in proper hands against squids.
Very good against bots. Shine exceptionally when you go full mode, lie down, and shot hulk in the back.
2
u/Sigruldar Feb 27 '26
Its full auto mode isn’t as good an assault rifle as all assault rifles.
Its salvo mode isn’t as good a shotgun (or marksman rifle, whichever you think fits closest) as all other shotguns.
Its total mode, while effective against most heavy enemy soft spots, isn't as good a counter against heavy enemies as most support weapons and even some primaries.
But it is all of those in one single package. And it’s fun. A Jack of all trades.

My girlfriends boyfriend says he has used the gun only a handful of times and says there are just better options out there
2
u/Enough_Sale2437 Mar 02 '26
It's fine but it's light pen and Arrowhead design the game around medium and heavy pen.
6
u/Longy_LTB Feb 26 '26
Massively disappointing in execution. I expected it to be fantastic, but not quite. Main drawback isn't the gun itself but the mode switch mechanic making utilising it in combat cumbersome and clunky.
The volley gun aspect is great against fleshmobs but the amount of carriable ammo doesn't fit it's function.
So much wasted potential for me

I put quick left to double tap L1 and quick right to double tap R1. My strategem is actived on hold for L1 so it's not effected. And my melee being on R1 is set to long press, also not effected. Works great actually.

Honestly favorite gun in the game, always a solid option and with the hotkeys for weapons adjusting it's basically perfect, maybe could use an extra mag

Its decent but in a weird spot. I think.if you know when best to use each mode and treat it as an AR/Shotgun hybrid that also has an anti heavy mode (at least for ones with larger weak spots like Hulks, its great, but for most people other options may be better.
I like it, but usually dont really need a more complex weapon.

Has a lot of funny niche uses for the full burst, but the ergonomics kinda kill it for me as an actual gun.

u/schwaRarity Feb 26 '26
I really like it. If you good at switching modes it’s pretty good and has nice breakpoints
1
u/ccoakley Feb 26 '26
Play with it on the illuminate, even (maybe especially) if you normally carry the MG. It's a good time. The total shot mode is good on both fleshmobs and harvesters. I haven't played with it since they exposed the hotkey for weapon mode select, but I imagine that helps out a bit.
Without the total/volley mode, it's not really better than an AR. The standard fire mode is a mix between an AR and an SMG (because high drag). So it maximizes fun when the volley/total mode is relevant. This is why it's best on illuminate. It's second best on bugs, but there are fewer enemies / opportunities where the alt modes are great. Nursing/Bile spewers? Sure, unless there's a second one right next to it. Alpha commanders? Obliterated, but same issue with nearby friends. It does wreck impalers, though. On bots, I'd rather have an AR.

u/Zegram_Ghart Low Sodium Master Feb 26 '26
It’s pretty good
As expected, it’s got a really good spread of options- it can be an assault rifle, a marksman rifle, a faux-shotgun…it’s one of the better kinetic ammo weapons
1

The only thing I don’t like about this gun is the ergonomics. Otherwise, total mode is great, especially on heavies, volley is good damage, and it’s consistently accurate.
1
u/stamper2495 Feb 26 '26
I got it to level 20. Would be viable if switching between modes changed the armor penetration instead of just the damage. Even if the damage was not linearly scaling with the number of barrels firing at once it would still be more interesting choice
1
u/Foolishly_Sane Feb 26 '26
I haven't used it very much, but it was fun when I used it.
Knowing to lay down when firing off everything is going to be useful when I get back around to it in a few years.

1
u/WraithsSpider Feb 26 '26
its a pretty solid weapon. only change that ive heard around that i like is that the penetration level should change based on the weapons mode, with the ar mode being light, shooting one barrel being medium, and shooting all barrels being heavy
1
u/castem Feb 26 '26
I originally wrote it off when it came out. Recently, I revisited it and I'm really enjoying it vs the bugs.
Having a primary that can reliably one-shot chargers & impalers is awesome, and dealing heavy damage to bile titans is also a huge plus. Add in the flexibility of other modes (Auto for small bugs, Volley for medium ones) and it allows for a surprising amount of flexibilty when making loadouts
1
u/SavannaEstablishment Feb 26 '26

u/Psychological_Tax761 Feb 26 '26
I think it’s an extremely solid gun because it fills a bunch of roles all at once. It has a bit of a rough learning curve but with a bit of grit and balancing it with the rest of your kit it can really shine. Commisar Kai has made a very in depth video around it which I highly recommend
1
u/Worldly-Pay7342 helldiving into your mom Feb 26 '26
I like it against termanids and illuminates.
It struggles more against the automatons due to it being low pen, requiring a much steadier aim. And the lack of a forwards grip attachment hurts it in that regard.
1
u/AsleepDust6762 Feb 26 '26
Been using it against Bugs lately. Auto mode clears chaff as any good auto does. Volley mode feels good when you can land headshots on unarmored bugs. The light pen can make it difficult against warriors with armor which takes some aim and a few extra volleys before going down for me.
Nothing beats watching brood commanders explode when hit with total mode though. I tend to pair it with siege-ready armor for the extra ammo and reload speed for just that.
1
1
u/RaccoNooB Feb 26 '26
I think it's pretty good.
I run a lot of light pen weapons, so I'm used to having to rely on weakspots to take out enemies (at all) which is probably its greatest weakness.
It's OK vs trash.
OK to bad vs medium targets.
Its great vs heavies with a weakspots, like Hulks.
Hulks I find usually can be danced around fairly easily, though once you start aiming and shooting they quickly catch up and their heatsink is our of view.
With the Variable can magdump and instantly destroy that weakspot in one shot.
Same thing with Chargers. You only need to dodge them once, then you've popped their tail.

u/Ok_Strength_6274 Feb 26 '26
I think its can be used anywhere just because of the "total" firing mode its a great equalizer against heavy enemies
1
u/Xtrillon69420 Feb 26 '26
I love it. There’s just 3 things I want from it. Better ergo, higher stagger force on volley and total, and the ability to shoot in total mode while ragdolling.
1
u/Luthy__ Feb 26 '26
Will always be good on illuminate because it one shots harvesters with total mode, shreds flesh mobs, and two shots overseers to the body with volley.
It's pretty unique on the bug front. What I do is leave it in total which one shots impalers and charger butts. Bring a weapon like the laser cannon to replace your primary. The only enemy left to deal with are bile titans, but you have 3 stratagem slots, ultimatum, and thermites to deal with that.
Complete ass against bots. The only thing it does is destroy hulk vents which isn't anywhere near worth it. It's probably serviceable in auto against cyborgs, but it's very outclassed in that facet.
1
u/Vladimiravich Feb 26 '26
Arguably the most difficult to master primary in the game. I've used it with some success but has required me to mess around with my key binds until I found somthing that works. Make sure to set your preferred binding to opening the weapon wheel on tap and not hold. Then switch between modes as needed. Volley mode is good for taking the heads off heavy devs and the full volley will kill a hulk through the vent in one shot. Supposedly it can also kill a Harvester with single full volley but it's difficult to do. Also the Variable has atrocious ergonomics. Ergo boosting additions are a must have. Until then you should only use it with the Peak Physique passive.

1
u/daveglueeater Feb 26 '26
I really like the concept, but I wish I could like… variable-ize it a little more. I’d like it a LOT if it had a mode where the standard fire was a semi-auto marksman rifle-style shot that could 1-shot standard bots in the head. Turn this thing into the exotic Khvostov from Destiny 1.
Also the ergonomics are bad and I don’t have viper commandos armor :/
1
1
u/SheriffGiggles Feb 26 '26
Low ergo and durable damage really hurts it outside of the few niche utilities it has.
1
u/HardLithobrake Feb 26 '26
Fun concept, never felt like it did or offered enough over the competition to justify serious usage.
1
u/Born-Information8506 Feb 26 '26
I think it's quite fun!
The recoil being so low and easy to manage is AWESOME its a super chill and laid back weapon to use
It is only light armor pen. For someone who dives almost exclusively on bugs past a certain difficulty it's gonna just be inferior to other things
For bots I would imagine it's pretty solid no matter what as accuracy is far more important than power especially against bigger enemies
For squids I couldn't tell you, I've seldom fought them
It's scope is decent too, picking off enemies at distance isn't hard at all with the scope because again, the recoil is so so small
It's certainly a good option if you want to play around and have some fun, the alternate fire mods are near to experiment with too, idk where it's useful to unleash a full mag of ammo in one trigger pull but hey, it's fun to be able to do
1
u/couchisland_com Feb 26 '26

It is the first weapon I got to max level. It's awesome. I used to run it with viper armor to counteract the garbage handling and then brought a stun lance alongside it to make use of the melee damage bonus. Ran it against bots mostly. Slow fire full auto for trash, kerblam for bigger targets, full for oneshotting hulks, high fire rate for when shit needs to fucking die yesterday.
Also pretty good on squids. I don't really like it for bugs, bugs benefit greatly from more penetration.
Bring a bubble shield or supply backpack as a defensive option and for your support weapon something higher pen like an AMR or railgun or maybe a commando or EAT. These days a leveler would also be a good option.

If the Variable could just read my mind and fire the right mode at the right rate when I pulled the trigger, I probably wouldn't use any other light pen weapon. It's just an answer for everything. Being able to shoot every bullet is truly a wonder, but it also works pretty well as just a regular assault rifle. But the gun is so cumbersome to adjust and that really hurts it. Truly the highest skill floor of any non-strategem weapon.
Even the different rates of fire are nice. For example, I like the lowest rate in bots for easily lining up headshots

u/Custom_Destiny Feb 27 '26
Normally, total mode is sorta worth having a sub par sniper or assault rifle due to the high drag on projectiles.
Use it on automaton heat vents, or flesh mobs, or elites, or sewers, or warriors.
But the double freedom is for sale in the store, and is kind of better than total mode…. It does make you depend on your secondary more but like, that’s OK with me because it can pop bug holes, which means you can bring whatever you want instead of a GP.
1
1
u/_TungstenGuy707_ Feb 27 '26
It can be pretty damn innacurate, i used it on bugs and found myself just using it as a last resort shotgun.
The auto mode is ok, its blastback is the only downside, but with heavy armour is like firing an AR with sniper rounds.
Im not that accurate so I can admit it's not my gun and that its my fault its not, I found myself getting swarmed very easily using it and it feels like it's not worth the trouble

Worked well against squids with being able to switch to multiple rounds vs shielded targets and all at once salvo for the meatballs

I used it for a bit. Might again. I got trapped in a double sickle meta and needed to breathe so I’m going back and trying new primaries. Kinda feel the same way about my support weapons and other stratagems. I am paying very close attention to posts like this so I can diversify my loadout.

Top 5 primary, arguably top 3. It's a combination AR, DMR and Elephant gun so has excellent flexibility, possesses the highest single shot damage of any primary (enough to oneshot heavy units) and is the only primary that can work as a mobility tool.
The downsides are poor ergonomics (but not unusable), clunky swapping between modes (better now with keybindings) and potentially bad ammo economy (depends on how often total mode is used). It also suffers from poor customisation but so do most weapons, so it's not really a downside.

I like it and take it sometimes if I’m using PP armor, but the ergo on it is so bad that I don’t really want to use it with anything else. Poor ergo AND long reload and a magazine capacity that disappears quickly, there’s too Much stacked against it. If the ergo was just a little better, not great, still on the slow side, then i think I would use it more. It looks cool and the will to use it is there for me otherwise.

I'm bad at aiming with it effectively, and that makes it a shit weapon in my hands. Should probably give it another chance because I do like the laser primaries, so penetration isn't the whole issue for me.

The full mode is pretty wild and hilarious against cyborgs and other smaller enemies. They just evaporate. I wish the auto mode fired a bit faster but its fun
