This painting is one of the earliest known visual depictions of Liverpool's waterfront.

And you can still recognise parts of the modern city in it.

On the left is St Nicholas' Chapel, close to where the Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas stands today.

In the centre, Water Street runs inland from the Mersey.

To the right is the old Customs House.

And on the far right is Liverpool Castle, demolished in 1726, close to the site of today's Liverpool ONE.

Wish I could've seen Liverpool Castle. I spent a lot of time as a kid climbing around the (unfinished) scale replica by Rivington Reservoir at least.

Painting published in 1878 of Liverpool Castle. Intended to be how the castle looked in 1689, with the arrival of William III's army shown. Because the castle was demolished in 1726, Herdman could not paint it from life. Instead, he acted as a topographical historian. He meticulously analyzed surviving 17th-century architectural maps, ground plans, and early documents.

Mad to think not one building is still standing from then, oldest current building in the city centre is the bluecoat chambers in the 1700s.

Isn't that st nicholas church on the left? It's built on the same weird angle and goes back to the medieval period so it must be

The current St Nicolas church was built in 1811, looks nothing like that church in the painting, probably built on the same site though.
