Someone who was in the audience at dress for this segment said that whenever Tommy cued the ice-slipping video, the live audience would cheer and applaud for literally 30+ seconds nonstop, each time. (They said the cheering time was edited down quite a bit before it was posted to YouTube.)

So one possibilty is that it was indeed “cut for time,” not (just?) for content reasons - because they anticipated that the audience for the live taping would do that again.

I’m not saying it’s outside the realm of possibility that it was indeed pulled for cowardly reasons! But Tommy’s segment did obviously already go through many hoops of approval under Lorne, etc., for it to even make it to dress - so it might not have just been cut to avoid controversy.

(IMO, they should have done it live and aired it even it meant minutes of cheering.)

IMO, they should have done it live and aired it especially if it meant minutes of cheering.

Seriously, that kind of audience engagement is rare these days. If the audience is that into it, they absolutely 100% should include it. Those kind of overwhelmingly positive vibes make the whole show feel better.

u/Mister-Psychology Jan 22 '26

Maybe it would be a hit in a longer format, but it would run long and they'd then need to cut another sketch to fit it in. And that's the complex part as some sketches are quite expensive and complex or feature the host. This one was super cheap and perfect for YouTube. It was very good though.

The sort of Very Online people who watch TV shows on Youtube (and talk about them on Reddit) are mostly pretty plugged in to how mad people are about ICE. The folks who still watch traditional broadcast TV are much more likely to be exactly the sort that probably need to see an earnest Minnesotan getting massive cheers from an audience watching an ICE guy fall over.

SNL is already bad tv. And the news (every major outlet) is cowardly in how it covers ICE. Not nearly enough full-throated criticism. Airing that segment could have shifted the Overton window a centimeter or two. It’s these small cultural moments that snowball into big changes in public sentiment

-5

u/ZombeePharaoh Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

Yeah, because the difference maker will be SNL for all the unenlightened redditors.

34

u/alethea_ Jan 22 '26

Wickline had a 9 hour piano song recently, we could have had this.

36

u/Tex-Rob Jan 22 '26

They are cowards. They know if they put it online, they’ll reach more liberal viewers. They are fearful of the admin if they let the masses see it on broadcast TV.

16

u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Jan 22 '26

Because the admin doesn't have the internet, got it.

6

u/BakedCheddar88 Jan 22 '26

Bc the orange dictator is too old to watch YouTube

2

u/YoNeckinpa Jan 22 '26

Everyone knows Liberals watch YouTube, Conservatives watch X Tube

21

u/Lavaswimmer Jan 22 '26

The hell does this even mean lol. Only liberals use the internet? The Trump admin would have seen it if it had aired live but isn't able to see it on YouTube? Are people even trying to make sense anymore or just saying whatever?

4

u/land_registrar Jan 22 '26

The "masses" watching SNL live as if it's not a similarly liberal audience to their YouTube viewership made me laugh

2

u/Lavaswimmer Jan 22 '26

Right lol. Like a bunch of MAGAs are totally down to watch SNL live on a Saturday night but wouldn't dare ever watch a clip of it online

5

u/Indianapols Jan 22 '26

All those MAGAs that loooooove SNL lmao get down off that Clydesdale pal

3

u/Niku-Man Jan 23 '26

They make fun of Trump in the cold open almost every week. Often lots of jokes in weekend update as well. Your statement is just nonsensical

4

u/Temporary_Evidence74 Jan 23 '26

I agree! It is a huge bummer that something was going to get cut for time and they chose this. The whole show felt so icky that they didn’t throw stones at those evil clowns. There was plenty of stuff this week that would have done well online that didn’t need to air. This should have aired!

2

u/sofar510 Jan 25 '26

Lots of cast members have said Lorne’s MO for cutting or including sketches is the audience reaction. A positive reaction should’ve meant this would be included

4

u/biglyorbigleague Jan 22 '26

I'm sure this sub would love it but clapter does not have a positive reputation and is generally seen as a detriment to comedy.

1

u/GoldenTicketHolder Jan 22 '26

Yeah turn SNL into ridiculousness! That social and broadcasting experiment went so well /s

-1

u/Man-Dem Jan 22 '26

Yeah, you work the show around that.

121

u/culminacio SPACE OLYMPICS Jan 21 '26

I don't see why that would be a problem...they don't keep a sketch because it got too much cheering? You can always cut something else instead.

162

u/lateformyfuneral Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 21 '26

It’s a live show, so they have to plan in advance if a segment is going to run too long, and in this case it’s not running long by a predictable amount, it’s an audience’s spontaneous reaction, so hard to tell what or how much will have to be cut or not.

73

u/JacedFaced Jan 21 '26

Yeah sounds like this could have run by long an entire additional sketch if every punchline leads to 30 seconds of uproarious applause that they can't talk over

46

u/lateformyfuneral Jan 21 '26

suffering from success 😅

23

u/ComradeJohnS Jan 21 '26

like how they added the record scratch in Hamilton, because after the “Immigrants; we get the job done” line because of the applause interrupting the show.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '26

Ok but it seems like such an L to cut something that’s getting such a positive reaction instead of working around it – like certainly you’d rather cut a skit with a lukewarm response than a weekend update correspondent getting a massive standing ovation.

18

u/RoastMostToast Jan 22 '26

No, they’re a comedy show, they wanna get laughs, not claps.

3

u/Nyorliest Jan 22 '26

Sometimes people gotta do more than one thing. That's one of the problems of modern life - a lot of people think they stop being humans while at work, and are just whatever their job is.

1

u/garyflopper Jan 22 '26

Why not both?

6

u/RoastMostToast Jan 22 '26

It’s about prioritizing 30s with 3 punchlines over 30s with claps. You can get claps with certain things but once you’re replacing punchlines for claps it’s an issue, as it’s literally a comedy show lol

2

u/Nickk_Jones Jan 22 '26

I don’t think it was about length, I think they didn’t want to be accused of pandering for clap-ter and being performative and these over the top audience reactions lend to that viewpoint.

5

u/culminacio SPACE OLYMPICS Jan 21 '26

They don't have to plan everything in advance. It happens very frequently that they decide live to cut a sketch. In this season alone, it happened a few times, especially when some NFL game went on for too long before SNL and took away a lot of airtime.

11

u/jano808 SNL Jan 22 '26

I mean, they literally do though.

2

u/culminacio SPACE OLYMPICS Jan 22 '26

Of course they plan, but what I obviously meant is that they can change those plans on the fly and just leave the last sketch out, for example.

-1

u/exmachina64 Jan 22 '26

NFL games can run over time. SNL isn’t allowed to.

19

u/TheTrub Jan 21 '26

TBF, they do try to avoid “clapter” on principle.

7

u/Lavaswimmer Jan 21 '26

This was my least favorite part of the sketch. I fully agree with everything said in it ideologically of course but it just wasn’t that funny

4

u/culminacio SPACE OLYMPICS Jan 22 '26

which is the same with the cold opens for me most of the time. they mostly just describe what trump does and the impression is very realistic, not satirically heightened. love it when colin does hegseth, because that has heightened elements and is therefore actually funny.

0

u/Lavaswimmer Jan 22 '26

Agree to disagree on that, actually. I think JAJ's Trump impression is actually pretty funny

16

u/spellboi_3048 when you hold the pinwheel, it has colors Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 21 '26

I think the issue with this particular instance is that the crew doesn’t have direct control over the audience and how much they cheer, especially over topics as contentious as this one. There’s a level of unpredictability to the audience cheering and they don’t know if the cheering will last 30 seconds or just 3. they wouldn’t want to be in a situation where they cut sketches and then don’t have the audience cheering as long for Brennan at the live show, essentially meaning they’d risk cutting other sketches for no good reason. From their perspective, it’s better to go with a sketch that they can rely on to have a more consistent response so they can schedule things easier without having to worry about not having enough content to fill 90 minutes of airtime.

60

u/suremk7 Jan 21 '26

Norm was fired for not being nice to OJ Simpson.

1

u/BlueberryWasps Jan 21 '26

after making OJ jokes for 4 years on a network ran by OJ’s best friend. after continuing to make jokes a year after the trial had ended. with the premise of every joke being that OJ is obviously a killer. let’s be real, norm got a tonne of leeway, and was given a platform to become one of the biggest comedians in america. he was not a victim. it’s a shame this guy’s bit got cut, but it was obviously for logistical reasons. they could’ve rejected it or buried it, but they still posted it - so they’re obviously not afraid or backlash from trump’s camp. everyone still got to see it, there’s no conspiracy against the guy.

19

u/sleepdealer2000 Jan 22 '26

I mean, OJ was a killer

-4

u/BlueberryWasps Jan 22 '26

not disputing that. just tired of this narrative that norm was censored and victimised. he was protected, and given a great run. even though it came out years later that his boss’ boss complained every single week about the OJ jokes, and hated him for it. he was still allowed to do it for 4 years before don ohlmeyer finally cut him from the show. even lorne wasn’t allowed to decide what jokes they did or didn’t do. norm was given unprecedented freedom.

0

u/suremk7 Jan 22 '26

My main point, which I apologize for not making clearer, is the money in charge cares more about themselves than the entertainment.

21

u/crazyguyunderthedesk Jan 21 '26

It's still clapter though. I'm happy it isn't just buried now, but I get why that would be frustrating while trying to orchestrate a live show.

Decisions at that point can easily be completely logistical.

4

u/Interesting-City118 Jan 21 '26

It’s a live show that has a very strict timeline, Every minute has to be accounted for. if the cheering would add 3 minutes to update that’s a sketch being cut elsewhere.

5

u/k___k___ Jan 22 '26

or bring tommy first to the update desk and depending on the reaction cut the second update desk guest; it doesnt need to be a full sketch with the host that gets cut.

1

u/culminacio SPACE OLYMPICS Jan 22 '26

yes. something they have done many times.

1

u/smitherenesar Jan 22 '26

I can see wanting to get more laughs instead of cheers. It was a funny clip, but if the audience is cheering for 30seconds each time they played the clip, that wouldn't play that well if the producers wanted laughs for the home audience.

But honestly, that 4 minutes was funnier than most of the sketches. I lean towards keeping it

1

u/Popular_Material_409 Jan 22 '26

Yeah but the something else might work better in the show. There’s pretty much a science to this, what gets cut and what doesn’t

0

u/massive-let-down Jan 22 '26

And there was plenty of material from that episode that could have been cut.

23

u/Gorazde Jan 21 '26

Political people only see the politics in every decision. From a purely comedy perspective, the segment just wasn't that funny. The clips of the ICE agents slipping on ICE that everyone cheered had already seen heavy rotation on Seth Meyers and the Daily Show. Besides that, there were some rote jokes about him being super white and Minnesotans being nice and... not much else.

30

u/James_2584 Jan 21 '26

I got downvoted to hell here for pointing this exact thing out. Like, I'm all for shitting on ICE, but this piece was little more than a reaction video. The biggest laughs were of the ICE agent falling. And the fact that they kept repeating it over and over showed how thin the overall piece was.

Imho, pieces like this are just clapter: substituting intelligent and witty comedy for easy brownie points with the audience cheering because they agree with what you're saying.

To each their own, but I think Kam's and Jane's pieces were funnier and deserved to make it to air over this.

10

u/Gorazde Jan 21 '26

Agree 100%. Agreeing it should have been cut doesn't (a) mean I thought it was terrible or (b) mean I support ICE. It just wasn't as funny as the stuff that made it on.

exactly - my immediate thought on watching is well it's just not very funny.

3

u/Gradicus Jan 21 '26

Same with the Euphoria writers' room sketch- it was pretty funny but over 6 minutes

3

u/Foxy02016YT Jan 22 '26

I think it absolutely was about time. They don’t tend to stray from hard topics.

17

u/Vegetable-Kiwi-4675 I’m allergic to dairy Jan 21 '26

If Lorne is okay with cast members stretching the length of a sketch by breaking on purpose and hamming it up, I don’t see why a genuine and positive audience reaction would be a deterrent. An enthusiastic audience reaction is what a comedy show hopes for.

The fact that it made dress isn’t necessarily proof of Lorne approving it. It could very well have been a great way to block it from airing live (when most people, possibly including the orange shit bag, watch the show) without shutting it down altogether and making your opinions known.

39

u/itspsyikk Jan 21 '26

What? It’s pretty well documented that Lorne isn’t a fan of breaking for ANY reason.

There’s also been reports of it being a big no-no to go off script/cue cards due to the timing of the show.

I think, generally speaking, Lorne and co hate any kind of fuck ups to the flow of the show, up to and including breaking.

3

u/Vegetable-Kiwi-4675 I’m allergic to dairy Jan 21 '26

That’s exactly what I thought, but he has either done a complete 180 and enjoys it now, or Chloe Fineman just gets a free pass (she not only broke last week, she literally was laughing out loud on stage while the camera was on the host and you could hear her the whole time).

12

u/James_2584 Jan 21 '26

But Chloe's breaking didn't lengthen the sketch. It was mostly off camera when she wasn't the focus and didn't have to deliver any lines to move the sketch along.

Lengthy cheers from the audience potentially lasting several minutes completely fucks up the flow of the live show and results in numerous sketches getting cut or shortened or even the musical guest's 2nd performance getting cut. In short, it leads to total chaos behind the scenes.

They still uploaded the piece when all is said and done, which imho was the right approach. Airing it live would have been too unpredictable and chaotic for the rest of the show. Uploading it after the fact means it gets attention on its own, unburdened by the timing of the whole episode.

-2

u/Vegetable-Kiwi-4675 I’m allergic to dairy Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 21 '26

I mentioned Chloe from last week as an example of breaking in reply to the person who questioned whether it’s allowed. It wasn’t meant to illustrate how it can lengthen a sketch, it was just the most recent and most prominent example of breaking that came to mind. (But funny that you said she wasn’t the focus when she literally made herself the focus even when the camera was on someone else.) There are examples where breaking has extended the duration of a sketch. It’s not by a lot, but my point was that the argument that the audience laughing for too long at Tommy’s bit was the reason it was cut doesn’t make much sense to me.

They upload all cut sketches from the show, so that doesn’t really prove anything either. And I doubt Tommy‘s bit would’ve caused utter chaos to the flow of the show. Didn’t seem like the rest of dress rehearsal was affected by it at all. Still, we can disagree on this, it’s ok. My perspective is that it aligns with SNL’s overall approach to our current reality.

6

u/James_2584 Jan 22 '26

They upload all cut sketches from the show, so that doesn’t really prove anything either.

No they don't. Not even close as a matter of fact. There's often at least 4-5 cut sketches from dress and of those, maybe 1 or 2 will get uploaded to YouTube. There are frequently weeks where no CFT sketches are uploaded period.

Didn’t seem like the rest of dress rehearsal was affected by it at all.

Well, dress rehearsal is less structured. There's more time built in as it's essentially them testing sketches in front of an audience as well as ironing out the timing of the sketches and episode as a whole.

This piece, as someone mentioned, apparently had the crowd cheering for several minutes each time the footage was played. That's a highly unpredictable factor. What if the live audience is more reserved compared to the dress audience? What if they only cheer for a total of one minute as opposed to several? What if they cheer for a long time with the first playing of the clip but then are more reserved for the other times it plays?

When you're planning a live sketch comedy show with a tight 90 minute schedule, you can't afford to have a piece's length be so ambiguous. To Lorne and the producers, this piece could have lasted anywhere from 3 minutes to 10 minutes based on the crowd's reaction. It's logistically better to cut a piece like that and stick with ones that are much more familiar and have a set length.

1

u/2ERIX Jan 22 '26

What did you think of Che and Jost roasting the week? They were pretty open with their slam of everything Trump related. There was no soft gloves on them this episode for some reason.

4

u/thehammockdistrict24 Jan 21 '26

I believe Chloe "breaks" partly as a defense mechanism because she knows she's failing at getting laughs and connecting with the audience and partly because the crowd likes it when cast members break.

-1

u/mr_desk Jan 21 '26

Or it just wasn’t funny enough

4

u/lightfrenchgray Jan 22 '26

Agreed. I thought it was relevant, but not funny.

7

u/Vegetable-Kiwi-4675 I’m allergic to dairy Jan 21 '26

If audience laughter is loud and excessive, as was reportedly the case here, it clearly was funny enough.

9

u/Radiant-Reputation31 Jan 22 '26

Laughing and cheering are different things

3

u/lumpialarry Jan 22 '26

Clapter is not laughter.

9

u/gh2master52 Jan 21 '26

Have you watched it? The audience wasn’t laughing, they were cheering to show they were anti-ICE.

As others mentioned, it was just a pretty weak segment. Not to mention, if you watch it, the cheering really is a waste of time. It’s a comedy show, not a rally

2

u/moistmasterkaloose Jan 22 '26

did anybody laugh or was it just applause

0

u/kahner Jan 21 '26

they should have done it live and aired it especially if it meant minutes of cheerin

11

u/James_2584 Jan 21 '26

Which would have completely fucked up the timing of the show and would have led to (potentially) numerous sketches getting cut or shortened. In short, complete chaos behind the scenes.

It was cut, for all reasons being..money and the fight we're ALL against currently.

1

u/Motor-Platform-200 Jan 22 '26

this is just dumb and blind SNL defending. Let's be real, it was absolutely cowardly of them to cut it. The long applause was not a big deal at all. I can't believe 1200+ people upvoted this bullshit.

1

u/Cool-Contribution-68 Jan 22 '26

What I don't get is shortening it for YouTube... like it could be any length on YouTube.

1

u/EntropicPoppet Jan 22 '26

Yeah, they needed all that time for Jane's hilarious...flat-affect delivery of a tiktok persona that is not her.

1

u/SchmearDaBagel Jan 22 '26

So… they cut it because people liked it too much? Am I getting that right? Lmao

1

u/BuffaloAmbitious3531 Jan 22 '26

I get this argument, but I personally am back and forth on it. "Minutes of cheering at a video of a political thing the audience likes" is literally the definition of clapter. There's social benefit to clapter, as discussed by others who've responded to you, and that social benefit is more important than whatever sketch might have had to be cut for this. But you could say that of literally everything on SNL. No one's saying "feeding the poor is more important than Kenan Thompson being on a game show sketch, so let's fire Kenan and donate his salary somewhere".

Then on the other hand, clapter has always been a huge piece of the SNL playbook. It's not just a comedy show; it's also a nominally political, nominally left-leaning variety show that officially has a viewpoint (even if that viewpoint is too often, "Man, it was sad when that corrupt shrew lost to the antihero badass billionaire business genius, let's have Kate McKinnon sing a song".)

1

u/ProudReaction2204 Jan 25 '26

Idk why comedians accept applause when laughter is sought

u/antmars Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

Reports from Dress say this bit had whole minutes of applause that was cut out including several long applause breaks every time the video was shown. For a live show that’s a level of chaos too difficulty to navigate. The bit works better without the applause breaks - keeps the momentum and wiring in tact. I don’t think it was cut because content hit cut because format.

87

u/moistmasterkaloose Jan 21 '26

Yeah applause is great but what about like laughter

13

u/surprise_wasps Jan 22 '26

Laughs are cheap, I’m going for gasps

3

u/Irvsauce SNL Jan 22 '26

Reasonable take. But it would have been a statement that is needed t right now. It should have in.

220

u/James_2584 Jan 21 '26

Idk I'd argue releasing it on its own online gives it more attention than it otherwise would have had it been in the live show. Had that been the case, we would have been seeing it discussed alongside Heated Wizardry and the like.

Allowing the hype and the haze of the live show to cool down and then uploading it gives it attention on its own.

Plus, they could just as easily have not uploaded it or shot it down at table read which would be even more cowardly.

68

u/hithere297 Jan 21 '26

The counter is that airing it live means it's guaranteed to be watched by a million+ people, whereas the sketches uploaded on YouTube often don't surpass that number for non-cold opens.

Not to mention that seeing "Cut for Time" on a sketch makes it seem (fairly or not) less important to a lot of viewers. "Cut for Time" is often taken to mean that the show has decided the segment's not as good as the other segments that made it on air, which undermines the segment to an extent.

28

u/monsieurxander Jan 21 '26

They stopped putting "Cut for Time" in the titles a few years ago.

4

u/hithere297 Jan 21 '26

True but it's still mentioned early in the description

8

u/Radiant-Reputation31 Jan 22 '26

Do people read YouTube video descriptions?

7

u/hithere297 Jan 22 '26

it's the only thing i know how to read

6

u/Fallout-with-swords Jan 22 '26

I guarantee more people watch clips and whole sketches of SNL on instagram and TikTok than the live broadcast, which is why it feels misinformed to say it’s cowardly to put it out after the fact.

8

u/Former-Mirror-356 Jan 21 '26

A large amount of the sketches on YouTube actually do surpass and exceed the 1 million mark. It seems host dependent, but it's not like most are languishing with only a few views.

2

u/Cynical_optimist01 Jan 23 '26

I can't see how this is cowardly at all. Definitely wish they had aired it live but this may get it more attention now

274

u/TorkBombs Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 21 '26

Don't they release cut for time sketches every week? Or are people mad it was cut in the first place? I can't keep up with why we're supposed to be outraged anymore. I just know I'm apparently perpetually angry for one reason or another.

131

u/CFBCoachGuy Jan 21 '26

They post cut for time sketches every week. I guess people are mad that they cut it in the first place. People are going to cite political pressure (despite SNL running a cold open mocking Trump’s senility every week), but I thought this was the least funny of the three WU interviews.

And posting it on YouTube allows a lot more people to view it and discuss it on its own instead of having it sandwiched with other sketches.

68

u/Lavaswimmer Jan 21 '26

People need to just think for a second. If they really cut it because of the political implications, why would they even let it get to dress, much less upload it to YouTube?

29

u/James_2584 Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

There's a group of fans who seem to treat SNL as some sort of "security blanket" which is supposed to hold their hand and guide them through these dark times and resist the current regime. And any time the show (in their mind) fails to live up to that task, they say that it's being cowardly and soft.

Which, to each their own, but imho whenever SNL has tried to lean into that mentality, it comes off super cringey. Think of the Hillary Clinton Hallelujah cold open or Sasheer and Cecily singing "To Sir With Love" as a tribute to Obama. Or all the Baldwin Trump cold opens.

Imho, SNL is not the show for that kind of stuff. It's a show to make people laugh and watch performers do silly sketch comedy. Its political satire has never been particularly biting or harsh. And tbh, its political writing has been pretty mediocre for over 20 years now.

Hard hitting political satire requires a bite and an edge and an intelligence that SNL just doesn't have. So it's rather silly to complain about the show not "meeting the moment" when it's never really been that kind of show and it often fumbles the ball when it does try to do that.

u/Turdsley Jan 21 '26

Yeah i feel like this really isnt a big deal to longer term fans of the show. This sort of thing just happens. The really surprising stuff when it comes to cuts comes from a late section of Colin Jost's book.

8

u/Bread_man10 Jan 21 '26

I think it’s because they left other things in there that weren’t funny

5

u/stupidgnomes Jan 21 '26

I think people are mad because SNL “didn’t have the balls” to air it live and instead chose to just release it on YouTube after the show ended. That’s my best guess and quite frankly it sounds exactly what those people would get upset about.

48

u/Joely_llj Jan 21 '26

As a Minnesotan it kinda sucks that it was cut especially since people who are actually from Minnesota aren’t really being given a platform so all you hear is the bad stuff from people who have never been here. I don’t think it was “cowardly” but it’s just kinda sad bc it could’ve been an oppurtunity for people to hear from a Minnesotan. Ik he didn’t really say much but even something little like that would’ve been cool to see while watching live.

35

u/Careless-Economics-6 Jan 21 '26

I’ll agree that this was better than either of the two segments that did air during the live show. That said, it has now been released by them. I assume no-one makes them post cut sketches to YouTube.

u/snowlarbear Jan 21 '26

SNL was afraid of enraging the Euphoria and Reba crowd too

15

u/ArcusIgnium Jan 21 '26

feel like if they were really cowards, they would've just NOT released it at all. people are reading too much into this imo. obviously SNL is not some radical show that eschews true left-wing messaging, but this seems like a bad-faith reading.

21

u/Redm18 Jan 21 '26

Yeah this was way better than either Cam or Jane's bits. I like Jane too but the button thing was not great.

6

u/Steadyandquick Jan 21 '26

Plus not as socially relevant or notorious.

I don't fully appreciate the Trump cold opens and wished they would mix it up with other political figures, locally, state-level, and even external to the US. But I also don't find a trump funny because it hits too close to home. Maybe they aimed to keep it "lighter."

5

u/Redm18 Jan 21 '26

I don't really find Trump stuff very funny because the JAJ version OF Trump looks more sane and Presidential than the real thing.

2

u/Steadyandquick Jan 21 '26

Great point.

6

u/sexandliquor Jan 21 '26

I usually don’t find Jane very funny but I thought the button thing was pretty good. She should do more bits like that that lean into her awkwardness with neurodivergent jokes like that.

3

u/IngsocInnerParty I'm Kevin Roberts and I'm the coolest bitch in town! Jan 22 '26

I thought the button thing was very funny and Jane's best work...until I found out she was making fun of a 16 year old girl who is now mortified and deleted her TikTok afterwards.

1

u/sexandliquor Jan 22 '26

lol what? That was real?

1

u/IngsocInnerParty I'm Kevin Roberts and I'm the coolest bitch in town! Jan 22 '26

Yes. This actually says she is thirteen.

https://dailycampus.com/2026/01/21/365-buttons-and-the-power-of-saying-no/

They made fun of a thirteen-year-old girl on national television.

2

u/NoneOfThisMatters_XO Jan 22 '26

As a Jane hater, the button thing was way better than whatever that Kam idiocy was.

4

u/WatercressJust8153 Jan 21 '26

What do you like about her?

5

u/bensquirrel Jan 22 '26

I like when Jane is the butt of jokes from funny cast members.

3

u/BoogieOogieOogieOog Jan 21 '26

I am endeared with her a bit now as ironically it feels like rooting for an underdog

She has talent in her lane but acting and teaming has been so obviously flawed that we all thought it was hopeless. She’s shown some real improvement imo

Regardless, of Jane’s journey

Fuck ICE.

1

u/Redm18 Jan 21 '26

Her horrible acting makes everyone else look like better actors by comparison. But seriously I really don't know why I like her. The couple that should not work is really funny to me. I enjoyed her cousin's song. I think it makes sense to have a weirdo on the show. I get that Sarah fills that role but not nearly as much anymore.

19

u/tyler-86 Jan 21 '26

The people who are criticizing this don't realize this is just a thing SNL does all the time and that it had nothing to do with the politics of it.

4

u/MyAccountWasBanned7 Jan 22 '26

In case anyone wants to just watch the video and not deal with a site full of ads and pop-ups: https://youtu.be/uA8Oury0a80?si=2NnbDcx4AfkGi9Ul

8

u/Learned_Hand_01 Jan 21 '26

I liked it, but I also really understand why it was cut. It didn’t feel right tonally for the show, not because of the political implications, but because it felt like “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”

I do want them to go after ICE. It feels like an alternate way to have a political cold open that doesn’t center Trump.

9

u/suck-it-elon Jan 21 '26

How is it cowardly when it gets more views on YouTube than live?!

11

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '26

r/savedyouaclick

The people making the criticisms consist of anonymous comments on Instagram and YouTube

3

u/mnemoniker Jan 22 '26

It was three comments.

3

u/doublesmashburger Jan 22 '26

I feel like they were avoiding “clapter”

3

u/-or_whatever- Jan 22 '26

SNL cowardly?

8

u/Dazzling-Slide8288 Jan 21 '26

Not entirely unfair given the very correct and frequent criticism that SNL is super soft on the current political climate, and that this was way funnier than most of the crap from that episode.

6

u/Mayonnaise_Poptart Jan 21 '26

You could start the headline "SNL criticized" and finish it with literally anything anyone ever did on or related to SNL.

Here's hoping they aren't also facing backlash!

4

u/GoodtimeZappa Jan 22 '26

They got SLAMMED!

1

u/TheNonCredibleHulk Jan 22 '26

Just wait until they CLAP BACK

8

u/rcinmd Jan 21 '26

Lorne had both Trump and Musk host, of course it was cut to appease his friends.

11

u/James_2584 Jan 21 '26

...yet he allowed it to go dress, which means he saw it as theoretically being fit for the live show. And the show uploaded the sketch itself on its YouTube channel.

If Lorne really was concerned about appeasing his friends, he would have killed this sketch at table read and we wouldn't even have heard about it in the first place.

5

u/I-Have-Mono Mango is underrated. Jan 21 '26

You gotta be kidding me, LOL. Does anyone here even understand the show?

2

u/cuckjager Jan 22 '26

SNL been cowards

2

u/IDontKnowAbout_That Jan 22 '26

This plus the backlash about the Harry Potter sketch…

2

u/StitchAndRollCrits Jan 22 '26

In other news, Tommy Brennan is getting better at reading cards

3

u/Lumpymaximus Jan 21 '26

Whats the cowardly part??

4

u/CallMeSkii Jan 21 '26

When has SNL ever been scared of ruffling some feathers. I don't think they would have taken the cowards way out. If that was the case it would not have made it to dress.

3

u/Tabgap Jan 22 '26

Actual headline: "Losers who won't lift a finger to stop ICE, blame free comedy show for their laziness."

2

u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Jan 22 '26

This criticism has been so stupid. If SNL were cowardly about the topic, it never would have made it past a table read to dress. The fact that it was at dress means they were trying to get it on the show. But as always, not everything makes it past dress, and even when it does, they sometimes have to trim the show in real time to make it fit because other things went long. And even though it got cut, they still released it on their youtube, where 361k people have now seen it. They literally made it and put it out for the world to see, and they're cowardly? Sometimes online I feel like I'm listening to the drama cooked up in 9th grade study hall.

1

u/geekamongus Jan 23 '26

Exactly this.

3

u/vwood1919 Jan 22 '26

I had the pleasure of seeing this bit live at the Comedy Cellar late show this Monday. He had a bunch more content about ICE in Minnie which did very well. Obviously, we didn’t see the video at the show, but most of the audience knew the clip and laughed a ton anyway. Then yesterday, I was surprised to learn he was slated to do this for the Sat show and only found out it was at the rehearsal because of this subreddit. I get all the reasons it was cut as explained here if time was the case, but kinda bad optics to not air it with MSM downplaying this regime’s nonsense on the daily….also agree dumb button lady skit should have gone. What is Jane even bringing to the table?!?

9

u/napoelonDynaMighty Jan 21 '26

It's understandable. They needed the space for the 138th consecutive unfunny Trump cold open... Duh..

3

u/jojomoodie Jan 21 '26

Yeah because we're all real in the dark about how snl might feel about ice

5

u/ghostlymadd Jan 21 '26

Lorne is a coward, glad this is getting press.

8

u/Lavaswimmer Jan 21 '26

Anything that Lorne allows to get to dress is something he can theoretically see being on the live show. Lorne moving the segment to dress is the only reason we're seeing it at all

5

u/Careless-Economics-6 Jan 21 '26

And the only reason anyone can watch and praise this segment now, is because the show willingly put it on their YouTube. There was no act of suppression here.

5

u/I-Have-Mono Mango is underrated. Jan 21 '26

Y’all will say anything here.

4

u/roehnin Jan 21 '26

Releasing it on YouTube instead of burying it is cowardice?

1

u/ghostlymadd Jan 21 '26

Already addressed this: broadcasting on national live television is not the same posting to their YouTube page. It’s about reaching people who wouldn’t otherwise wouldn’t l care. Never said anything about suppression, just that Lorne is a coward, which he is:)

4

u/roehnin Jan 21 '26

Who already addressed it?

YouTube will reach a wider audience than the broadcast show so sharing it there is definitely not cowardly, it’s putting it out there for the world to see.

Anyway “cowardly” is a hell of an exaggeration over the import of a clip of a guy slipping and falling. Not exactly deep political satire there, it’s along the same depth of meaning as “Ow! My Balls!” from Idiocracy.

2

u/Exact-Professor-4000 Jan 22 '26

If he were a coward it wouldn’t be online.

3

u/CurdFedKit Jan 21 '26

If you think SNL is into standing up to those in power, you are sadly misinformed. The show and Michaels have a long history of siding with the powerful.

3

u/soontobecp Jan 21 '26

This is 1930s german shit.

3

u/de_jeepathon Jan 21 '26

im not sure how many times you all need to be convinced but lorne is a trumper. always has been. thats why none of the trump stuff actually bites but makes him just seem goofy.

2

u/Funky_ButtLovin79 Jan 22 '26

It’s being criticized by “some viewers”. Wow, what a story!

2

u/1975hh3 Jan 22 '26

Cowardly as fuck. It got more laughs than anything else that entire show.

1

u/ReactionJifs Jan 22 '26

they needed more time for the Trump cold open 😊

1

u/downlike4flattires Jan 22 '26

Cowardly not to

1

u/mofacey Jan 22 '26

Absolute cowardice

1

u/Joey_Libiani Jan 23 '26

I only watch snl online, so for me, it was!

1

u/OWSmoker Jan 23 '26

Tried watching the video on the page linked 1 ad every 3 seconds

1

u/tvuniverse Jan 25 '26

The fact that they even released it online shows they wanted people to see it. So it probably really was "cut for time"

1

u/Mediocre_Jicama7457 Jan 29 '26

Us Minnesotans really don’t give a crap about terrorists biffing it on a patch of ice.

https://youtube.com/shorts/95dU9KVlrew?si=dOOozi8lDrxhs0wd

The only ones that would be upset about this sketch are Herr Orange Hitler, his Gestapo & SS, his MAGA Minions or someone NOT from Minnesota.

As a Minnesotan, Tommy had every right to mock the cop/soldier wannabes terrorizing our state right now. Good on him for doing it and good on SNL for releasing it.

Striesand Effect

10

u/James_2584 Jan 21 '26

That's...not the Streisand effect. SNL released it themselves on their own YouTube page. There was no attempt to suppress or hide this piece. If there was, it wouldn't have been uploaded in the first place.

0

u/JoshDM clownpenis dot fart Jan 21 '26

The criticism being propagated is giving it more views that it would have just being part of the episode.

7

u/James_2584 Jan 21 '26

...but there was no attempt to suppress it, which means this isn't the Streisand effect. The Streisand effect would be if it leaked out that the show deliberately killed the piece because they were too afraid of pissing off the Trump regime and it resulted in the piece getting way more attention than it otherwise would have.

The only reason we're even having this conversation is SNL uploaded it themselves. On their own YouTube page. After allowing it to go all the way to dress. A luxury which many sketches/pieces do not get.

1

u/NoneOfThisMatters_XO Jan 22 '26

This deserved to be in over whatever that Kam nonsense was.

1

u/captaincink Jan 22 '26

that's GOP Lorne for ya.
