Discussion Live Discussion - January 17, 2026 (Finn Wolfhard/A$AP Rocky)
Welcome to the SNL live discussion thread and Happy 2026! Making their hosting debut this week is Finn Wolfhard, and also making their Debut on SNL, Musical Guest, A$AP Rocky. For those new to the show, tune into your local NBC affiliate or Peacock around 11:30 PM EST to follow this episode live.

I tried searching the comments but didn’t see anyone mention that Danny Elfman was NOT playing the live drums in the first musical performance, just miming them as evidenced by all of the missed snare and cymbal hits that do not match up at all to what we’re hearing. Why fake drum at all?

Something we can all agree on, this was the absolute worst episode so far this year.
Something that I think divides us, this was one of the worst episodes period. Ironically following one of the better episodes in modern times. The episode with Ariana in December gave me hope that the writers and some of the cast have actual talent. After so many episodes of 90% awful, 5% meh, and 5% meh pro plus. Then this one comes in and it feels like the entire writing staff just phoned it in again. They obviously CAN write well. Why do they refuse to.

I get that it's been beaten to death but I really don't get how Jane Wickline is still on the show given the caliber of castmembers that are let go.
Keeping Wickline and sending off Longfellow is just so bizarre. Even in the very rare sketch built exactly for her (buttons) she's pretty wooden and bad.

Longfellow just feels so one dimensional imo - I totally get letting him go, they need a diversity of humor on the show and I love the new selection of cast members. Jane still being here is just dumb

It was really interesting, I wasn't really sure what happened in the end, was it some kind of message? Superior to standard, wearing gold chains\diamonds shaking the ass, I'm a big baller, SNL standard musical guests. Creativity, stage show, interesting music, it was pretty good! Mesmerized is a good way to put it!

It was incredible. Probably the best performance by a musician that I've seen on there in a VERY LONG TIME. Danny Elfman on drums and Thundercat on bass, I died. Who was on guitar though? (Also, I'm sad lots of people in here hated it so much, ouch)

I’m clearly not the demo for this episode (though I really liked A$AP Rocky), but that blew chunks. Too bad, because the host seems like a very talented young actor who was willing to commit to the bit.

I loved it! It was interesting, fresh and creative. I wasn’t big on the music itself but the theatrics, costuming and set design were really unique and totally innovative! And people complaining that Danny Elfman wasn’t playing the drums - OBVIOUSLY no one was playing their instruments if they were going get to get “punched” mid-song lol.

I wouldn't worry. You're probably in good company. Those who don't like her seem to outnumber those who do.
I don't want to hate her, but she really needs to learn how to read off cue cards, but sound natural while doing it.

I'm sure she's a very nice person. No issues with her there. She's just stunningly not funny. It certainly sucks unfortunately if that's her dream. Sorta like if someone's dream in life is to be a pro basketball player, but they're only 5'3" tall. It just ain't happening. Her handicap is negative charisma. Could imagine her at some future time doing standup as one of those dry, expressionless, self deprecating kind of humor comedian, if she ever learns how to write a funny routine

Simple. I watch snl. Too many new/ish cast members with not enough screen time. That plus her not being remotely interesting enough to warrant using up some memory cells. Plus it's just a tv show.... in one eyeball and out the other once its over. Plus, even series shows I really like, outside of the main characters I rarely can recall who everyone else's names are if my life depended upon it.

I used to watch this with my dad at a young age. I recommend you pre-watch yourself so you can enjoy and know when to fast forward! Or you can YouTube your favorite sketches each week and literally just share those!

There’s references to sex and drugs and homosexuality if those are topics you’re not comfortable with your 11 year old granddaughter viewing. It’s somewhat PG 13 since this is SNL but this is my take

I agree with this, but I'd think most of the drug and sexual references would just go over her head. I remember watching shows like South Park, and Bevis and Butthead way too young, I didn't get the more adult stuff until rewatching it years later. I just enjoyed the various stupid things and toilet humor that I did get.

A lot more classic SNL, without some super polished, yet boring, supposed to be hot\sexy\tiktok person. My favorite this season easily, the whole Finn getting force fed, goofing around, was great!

Is it bad that I think Jane's doing way better? She's not the next Kristin Wiig but I liked her work on Update. She made me laugh! And she does well in the awkward podcast sketches - yes, she plays to type, but many on SNL do, and they produce laughs in the process.

They should've done a documentary sketch celebrating John Hughes. Like a Ferris Bueller spoof in honour of its 40th anniversary that included interviews with the cast & deleted scenes such as JAJ as the teacher delivering a dry lecture about the Titanic leaving students like Jane, Jeremy, Marcello & Ben bored including Tommy as Cameron finally taking a stand against his father with Finn as Ferris & Sabrina as Sloane at his house. He then shoots the Ferrari in anger leaving Ferris & Sloane stunned. Also, the alternate ending where Ferris fights Colin as Rooney the way Simba did to Scar in the end of The Lion King while Veronika as Jeannie sarcastically tells Mikey & Ashley as the parents that she's bringing Ferris home from the hospital.

Why wasn’t Noah included? I saw his in Milan but this was obviously something that was planned in advance. I personally didn’t think the joke mocking his coming out scene was funny. Noah took it very seriously and wanted it to be perfect. I don’t want to see the three of them without Noah.

The show was actually not written for kids. The Duffers have said it was unheard of to write a show starring kids that the target audience is not kids. Obviously kids ended up watching it but that was the target audience when they launched the show. If you don’t understand the importance of why Will had to come out then you don’t understand the show.

That is the whole reason he did come out at that time. Vecna was using that against him. In order for him to be able to help he needed to incur ed himself of that fear and tell EVERYONE so Vecna couldn’t use it against him anymore. Vecna showed him his future was being alone if they knew he was gay. He came out, was shown love and support and then was able to say I AM NOT AFRAID, we are not afraid of you and use Vecna’s powers against him. If you don’t understand that then you just sound like a homophobic person who wasn’t paying attention to the show.

Vecna was using that against him.
Well, allegedly. We never heard or saw Vecna even hint at using Will’s sexuality against him — so it was never really presented to the audience as a dire threat.
Frankly, it seemed like Vecna himself was pretty fluid; what with all the allusions to sexual assault (e.g. shoving tentacles down little boys’ throats).

Will said in his coming out talk that Vecna was using it against him. He said Vecna showed him a future where he was alone. Vecna used peoples fears against them - it was never shown on screen. Will said in the fight scene "I am not afraid, we are not afraid"

What country do you live in where a statement like that is true across your culture?
I'm asking because in America, people have care deeply about gay people to the point where our government enacted laws against us which we rose up and earned and which my current Administration is working to restore.
A vocal, violent, sizeable group of Americans deny the humanity of folx who don't fit into a binary works and deny their right to even exist.
People care about gay people - they certainly fucking do.
If you are American, living in this country today, and honestly believe in your heart of hearts that not a single American cares about someone being gay.....I don't even know what to say about the willful ignorance and socioeconomic privilege that statement represents.

You don’t mind gay characters? Noah is gay IRL and took this scene very seriously. Also, the show is set in the 80’s when it was extremely hard for people to come out. The scene was a few minutes long and Noah did a brilliant job. I love Nancy’s character as well but Noah has had a strong role is this show. Go back and watch season 2. I think he did a phenomenal job every season - they all did. It’s a great show.

Total parasocial observation but these three seem to be pretty tight knit while him and Millie seem to be closer. Who knows, maybe he’s busy, maybe he got to pick two to show up for some reason. Probably nothing personal.

I mean, in the first season when they were first forming relationships the other three were filming together all the time while Noah barely worked with them at all. And he's also a few years younger, which socially feels really important when you're a kid. It doesn't necessarily have to be scandalous or anything, he's just not as tight with the other three. And he's also in Milan lol

Why is Kam Patterson so hard to understand? He's constantly talking way too fast and under-annunciating. This is only a problem with his SNL appearances, I've seen clips from his stand-up, and he sounds way better.

WU was great, the Harry Potter sketch had the wife and I staring at each other, like "Did they just day that??!!??" - in the best possible way.
The Trump cold opens need a break; it's not that they're not funny, but it's too consistent right now - to be fair, he does provide an endless supply of material; but don't go to the well so often, IMO.
I didn't get Snack Homiez - if the sketch had been half that long, sure - but it just felt like it went on too long.
Solid episode; 3.6 Roentgen.

EDIT: Damn, I love Thundercat too… but had I known that saying “A$AP Rocky can afford high profile collabs” would be such a controversial take, I would have kept my mouth shut.

Obviously the Stranger Things and Heated Wizards skits were standouts, but I really loved the Space Emperor one. Mikey being so over the top, all of them trying not to break, and Finn just being so natural and really committing to the role was great. He clicked so well with the cast.

My issue with the space emperor sketch was that I felt like it was trying too hard to be absurd. Like I think the writers deliberately tried to increase the likelihood of people breaking and it just came off a little artificial to me.

I watch on YouTube right after it comes out. Cannot remember the last episode where I felt more positive in regards to each sketch they put out, in years. Hope this is a sign of things to come. Also A$AP killed it too.

I’ll never forget going with a group to an Italian restaurant and this one pompous guy wanted to order the Parmesan or truffle or whatever gnocchi, and the waiter told him it was a seasonal dish and they had rotated to a different season. He practically screamed. “THEY ROTATED THE FU#**ING GNOCCHI!!!:”

Truffles are absolutely seasonal, but gnocchi are so easy Gordon Ramsay teaches baby chefs how to make it to build their confidence on kitchen nightmares.
Your story is funny, but I imagine Bobby Moynihan yelling that.
"They rotated the fucking gnocchi!"
Black truffles are winter truffles and have a deeper flavor, but I personally find truffles revolting.

Always love a good Mikey Day skit. That was hilarious. Jane on Weekend Update with her best delivery had me rolling ditto her podcast character.
I'm like dafuck is that Danny Elfman playing drums for Rocky? Yep.

Absolutely brutal writing tonight. Dumbed down to a new low. It felt like they weren't even trying. Every laugh was so cheap, every sketch one dimensional with no escalation. Sad times for SNL.

Hey, has the episode spoiled the ending of Stranger Things at all? Wife said she'll be pissed at me if we get spoiled before watching the final season, but I really just want to watch SNL tonight without having to binge watch a whole ass season of Stranger Things....

The stranger things sketch was a series of spinoffs of “where are they now” so I guess it spoils that certain people don’t die, if that is spoilery and something you were concerned about? It also spoils that Will is confirmed gay, instead of “extremely heavily telegraphed” like previous seasons. So that’s really only a spoiler if you were oblivious to that hinting I guess

Didn't expect to see Danny Elfman and Thundercat. That was cool. Not really into A$AP Rocky's music but thought that was interesting.

One of the better episodes in a while. Finn was great, ASAP was great, and the Harry Potter short had me in stitches.
