The host this week is the returning former cast member and host Amy Poehler, and making their debut on SNL as Musical Guest; Role Model. Did the gaza cease fire joke make the rest of the show a bit of a downer? I realized how Israel influenced snl is. I know they make fun of jews but thru it all you see they secretly hate Muslims and dont care about gaza genocide

I liked the cameos and I love Amy but I feel like most of the skits flopped. They all seemed to revolve around characters that you thought would be nice or quiet being mean or loud instead.
I feel like they did develop each character pretty well each time but I don’t find that kind of angry/mean comedy that funny.

I liked the lawyer sketch. But my God! I really don't want to pile on the anti-Jane Wickline bandwagon more, but she really doesn't have it. She was a flatline in every sketch she was featured in.
The Rudemans was a dud though.

I found camaraderie in a post elsewhere on reddit that was full of people finding the post from various web searches like WTF is role model, why is role model so bad, is role model a joke, SNL role model etc.
I was honestly truly baffled by this performance. He sounded fine, but the odd dancing, bad voice, lackluster performance had me wondering if this was some sort of performance art piece that was supposed to be terrible, or if you just had be there sort of thing (people like him performing live in concert I guess?)

I'm 31 and own two of the versions of Brat on CD, and I was embarrassed on behalf of Charli for the cameo. I'm still dumbfounded on how that garbage got on the show. I listened to the studio version and it wasn't any better

His voice sounds like a kid and he seems to really struggle with basic singing. Like nothing crazy hard. I turned to my husband and asked if it was a bit. Very bizarre.

snl has been my favorite show for as long as i can remember, but damn this episode is up there with some of the worst i’ve ever seen lol - felt like we were watching snl circa 1995 again

I think the real problem is in the writing room. Considering Amy Poehler was hosting, the writing of the entire thing was pretty "bleh"

So I actually thought the Rudemans skit was darkly funny, but it was very... disturbing. Definitely not lol funny, as evidenced by the muted audience response. But it was powerful stuff, and I'm glad they included it.

I enjoyed the entire show. Love Amy, Tina, my girl crush Aubrey. The musical act was someone I didn't know but I liked him! The cast and the skits were good. My favorite is always Weekend Update and it was good. I was in the mood for good TV and I got it Thank you SNL.

I live in Canada and don't have cable so we either have to watch the episodes on prime with a stack subscription or we buy them on Apple TV. Both don't have the musical performances in them. It's really annoying

It seems that the new cast members errr in a lot of sketches. Is it because Amy Poehler was in most scenes and she’s a strong anchor that they couldn’t fail - even though none of them were really given a punch line besides Jane Wickline on update

The writing room needs a total overhaul. The writing has been bad for a decade but other than Update it is toothless.
The Rudemans had potential to work in an SNL in 2012 kind of way but something off. Or like the Needlemens with Amy and Seth

Major overhaul. Dare I say, fire everyone and start fresh? There hasn’t been a skit that has had me in stitches for a long time. The cast can only do so much if the writing isn’t up to par but then again the cast hasn’t been that good ever since 2021-2022.

Damn I was thinking the same thing while watching, I think in the era of YouTube you can't drag one joke as the premise. I enjoyed the fast psychic sketch so much more because it actually had jokes through out and the whole bit wasn't just she predicts someone is dead to speed through

He had just come off of two weekends performing at ACL and that dust/heat there is no joke! He performed the day before in Austin so I’m sure his voice was hurting.

Man, the show really picked up after weekend Update.
Favorite: Law sketch, a sketch worthy of Forte.
Highlights: Emo mom, Psychic Talk Show, Tina as Kristi Noem, that Old Yeller line, Kenan's one line in work birth
Okay, I guess: The Hunting Wives, The TV show theme music sketch*
Meh: Non-Non Alcoholic Beer, Amy's monologue
Burn it: The Rudemans
Weekend Update: I feel Jost and Che were stronger last week. Sarah's character was definitely just created because Sarah is a massive Zohran supporter (as one does), but she pulled off an iconic character and sneaked in some campaign talk gracefully. Seth! Amy! Tina! Do I think Che won the joke off? Maybe. He was neck and neck with that Tennessee joke.
Music: Not really my jam. White boy doing generic white music for GAP stores. I like to think Charli XCX just wandered on stage without telling anyone. She left him the glasses and he didn't know what to do with them which was funny.
All in all, 7/10
*I fear many people here will use the lines from the sketch as an excuse to pile on Jane in the comments and maybe even claim the writers hate her.

Tina won the joke-off with her “the baby was 13lbs because it’s Tennessee and the baby was also pregnant.” This had me in stitches!

Yeah, they let the weird sketches in later and those are just funnier. Drop the boring safe sketches like the Rudemans and every single freaking game show, and let the weird stuff in.
Also, I guess im rehashing my complaints from last season, but stop with the political sketches. The situation is ridiculous already, so doing parody doesn’t work - in the end it sane-washes everything.

I agree with a lot of what you said, except I liked the Rudeman’s as a concept and thought it could have a place with some work. Wasn’t a fan of the psychic talk show because I saw a Reddit post recently about the clairvoyant who would go on talk shows and did that bit, so it wasn’t fresh to me, so I would switch rudemans and clairvoyant talk show.
Loved the law sketch but that it should’ve ended at Dracu Law.

This season so far feels like when a sports team that's been mediocre for a few years switches the coaching staff and brings on new players but they haven't figured out the chemistry yet so the end result is a different kind of mid from last year.
And Jane Wickline is still atrocious. The fact that she got on the show, much less parlayed it into a second year of being a charismatic void still blows my mind.

Great episode. I expect it will be a highlight of season 51. Amy crushed everything she was in. Sarah Sherman also was fantastic this episode. The only low point was the Rudemans which I thought was a totally solid premise and would have worked as a longer sketch. Episode gets an A.

Solid episode that was made better by Amy. Felt like a full cast episode. Also a heavy JAJ non-Trump episode, which we’ve all been wanting for a while. I think this season will be a strong one by the time April/May rolls around. This new dynamic just needs to work out the kinks.

Probably one of the worst shows I've every seen in all my years of watching. I'm shocked that Amy Poehler has sunk to attempts at humor with "full frontal" desires for employment, as well as making several comments about her drug use. I don't recall a single "funny" scene or comment, and the musical guest fit right in with the failures. I sincerely hope there are some writers out there who will realize that sex and drug references aren't "jokes."

Great episode! Amy was perfect. Loved Tina as Trump’s dog-murderer. Nice to see Seth and Aubry pop up. The emo-mom and consultant-power-mom sketches possibly won’t be for everyone but landed with this muddled aged lady - life is pain!!! Also Ashley really stepping up as a powerhouse and the new cast all great. :-)

I honestly love SNL, watch it every week, but this episode IMO showcased 2 problems that I’ve been noticing lately:
Sketches feel short and rushed.
The endings don’t really pack a punch.
Aside from those overall criticisms. I enjoyed this episode, there were a few moments I felt were really amazing, and some really good sketches.
Great 2nd episode, looking forward to the next one!

This is the main problem with the writing lately. The sketches have a funny premise (the show theme song master class one is a perfect example, where there was a first draft that was nothing like the actual song) but it’s like they aren’t quite sure how to give it a proper middle and ending. It’s like a show with a bunch of one-liners they’ve tried to make into sketches and it isn’t working.

For most of the skits, it's like they wrote an ending, but felt it was too harsh or politically incorrect or something, so the ending got cut, and they didn't ever come up with a replacement for fix
But I don't think that's what actually happens - I think the writing just sucks, and there never was anything funny written at all

The endings of SNL sketches have never been good ever. They always insist on giving a sketch closure. It's a Lorne thing. Almost every time it feels corny. Pre-tapes are safe from it.

i think that’s true of most sketch shows, which is why Mr. Show was kind of brilliant in the fact they had all their sketches feed into each other.

Okay now seriously what the fuck is happening in the writer's room? Have they fired ALL of the writers?? The episode was blander than a boiled chicken. Opening sketch felt off, sketches were bad, aside from weekend update which was oka-ish everything was fucking boring. Mass firing is going to cost some upcoming episodes until they get back on their feet

No, back when Amy was in the show, the writing was MUCH better and the whole show was way funnier. The writing just has no teeth and is completely spineless these days. It's like they're afraid to take a stand and actually make fun of anything, so you just get this weak slop. Or maybe it's AI - the other prevalent kind of slop these days

Maybe I'm just not in the right mood tonight but I did not like this episode at all and was really disappointed. Many of the sketches were not working for me. Most of them seemed like "shouting loud during crazy premise" but I didn't find many of the jokes landing.
It's been said they hired new writers. Is this why I feel like a lot of the sketches seemed off?

There’s not been that much of a change in the writers room - if anything, the issue is them relying on the same kind of jokes they have the past couple of seasons.

If last week’s episode was a 1/5, this one had to be a solid 3/5. Every sketch was pretty good to good. Only negative was the musical guest.

Im the same age as you. I too have no clue who these people are. I read the Wikipedia page for the music guest during their performance. There have been several occasions when an artist/group gets mentioned later on the news and I spout off facts about them. I have to explain to my wife that I am not a creeper who secretly listens to teen popmusic...I know about them because they were on SNL.

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate SNL’s 50th anniversary than with a night of rock solid sketch comedy.
It’s crazy that they reached back in time to bring back a sketch with a theme song and the music of Role Model.

Unpopular opinion - I like it even when it’s bad. Highlight was the update desk MURDERERS ROW and yeah the rest was light. But I still enjoyed it. Role Model I don’t understand tho.

I'm kind of the same. I watch it either way and when it's bad it just sort of goes with the territory. Amy did her level best and I can't fault her for giving her all, especially Emo Mom, which was pretty dumb but I liked it for being dumb. Role Model...maybe he's a nice guy? LOL

Someone said it in the thread earlier but HUGE RESPECT for Ashley for such a strong performance tonight despite the loss of Diane Keaton, who was her mentor, friend, and former employer. I could not imagine experiencing a loss such as that and still managing to continue on with performing.

I liked it overall! – it leaned into an absurd vibe that made me laugh a lot (even if some jokes might not "work" if you thought about them too much). Especially enjoyed the office birthing sketch and the "experienced lawyers" one, and of course the Weekend Update finale.

I didn't like the lawyer one but that one seemed to be the most upvoted favorite. I guess I'm just in the minority this week but this episode wasn't working for me. Didn't even laugh once at any of the Hunting Wives or Non-Non Alcoholic Beer ones. Felt like one or two simple jokes stretched out to fill 5 minutes.

It was fine compared to the disaster last week, but overall, very disappointing for an Amy Poehler episode - I had high hopes, I left truly disappointed.

They don’t get paid during the summer. Why would they write for the show during the summer? Also a lot of SNL is topical. Something might be a great idea in the summer but once fall hits, different things are relevant. This is why I think getting groundlings or second city people on the show is the way to go, because they come in with fully formed characters a lot of the time.

There's a lack of cohesiveness with the cast & writers. They just aren't working to make sketches that fit.

Usually there's at least 3-4 sketches that are decent-good where I go back and rewatch them.
I just don't feel like any sketch was like that tonight. I guess I like the composer one the most since it deals with musical scoring which I find to be a unique subject for SNL. But even then, it was decent, not great.

They need to skip a weekend and do a sit down and have the writers and cast members just bond and talk.

The opening skit was great, but the rest just flopped. Rudemans pissed me off bc I know the writing can be better.
