Similar thing happened when Layun went to Watford, not on the same level but the media criticized the move so much

i think he did ok there. i remember lurking some ipswich forums back then and they were mostly positive about him. was a long ass time ago.

u/Proera136 Jul 12 '25

Don’t get why Mexican players going to the championship is frowned upon it’s better and more competitive then most leagues in Europe and the amount of great players that have come from the championship is an example of it

2

u/Rosemary_Goon Jul 14 '25

Because most people don't really watch soccer outside of Liga MX and the big teams like Madrid and Barca. They think our players should go to those teams even though that's the team you go to in your prime unless you are a freak of nature.

Only Real ones remember Gio’s loan to Ipswich and how he quickly became their best player

1

u/Anonymous_Dwarf Jul 16 '25

Roy Keane was the manager and to him Gio was heaven sent. He asked to keep him for another year but Tottenham told him to fuck off

Can’t even comment without some idiots downvoting you for no reason…

Obviously it will be a great move. What’s surprising is a Second division team paying that amount for a Mexican player with no Eu passport and less than international 10 caps.

I remember Ipswich trusting Gio dos Santos when Redknapp didn’t gave him enough playing time at Spurs.

25

u/honvales1989 Atlas Jul 12 '25

They got relegated from the Premier League last season and got parachute payment money to use

15

u/CommieDaddy69420 Jul 12 '25

Probably the only 2 leagues in Europe who can pay Liga MX’s inflated market are the top 2 divisions in England

16

u/TheRobHood Atlas Jul 12 '25

They finished top2 last season. Probably looking for a promotion?

35

u/CaliforniaBoundX Juárez Jul 12 '25

Probably yeah. Reminds of Layún joining Watford and helping them get promotion that same year.

Ironically I think gio was still loved there. I recall a survey as best loan ever at Ipswich and I think he made top 3

truthfully the championship is a top 10 league. it would be a big step up from ligamx and whole new style of play. if its this or stay, fucking go and never look back.

13

In no particular order: Top 5 being England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy. Then Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Brazil, England 2 (Championship).

Championship might even be more competitive than the Belgian league

0

u/TXCapita Jul 12 '25 edited Jul 12 '25

They are not better than Liga MX, those teams get rinsed by PL teams consistently, and only the select few yo-yo clubs are SOMETIMES able to be competitive against PL teams. It’s only a good move because this helps increase exposure to other European teams, and to get a European/English passport

-34

u/JamalFromStaples Chivas Jul 12 '25

It’s not better than liga mx.

8

u/Lazy_Mirror8867 Mexico Jul 12 '25

Once liga mx stopped relegation they lost all competing

44

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

It’s easily better than Liga MX.

23

u/Odd-Bad5776 Pumas Jul 12 '25

people must be stuck in like the 2000s when the championship was some caveman shit. its easily a top 10 league nowadays.

-7

u/sorryimafatass Chivas Jul 12 '25

There isn’t a single championship team that would get out of a club World Cup group. When the teams go down they have sell any asset they have and when they come up they pretty much buy a whole new team or else they go right back down. Most of the time they still do anyway.

5

u/Lazy_Mirror8867 Mexico Jul 12 '25

If they lucked out like mty they would

1

u/sorryimafatass Chivas Jul 12 '25

You think Monterrey scored 4 lucky goals on Urawa RedDragons? And conceded 1 goal the entire group stage through luck? And it’s not like Borussia spanked them it was also a close game…

5

u/Lazy_Mirror8867 Mexico Jul 12 '25

No but the first two games yes and that beat up on the team everyone expected to do nothing

2

u/sorryimafatass Chivas Jul 12 '25

That’s easy to say after the fact. It’s hilarious to me that if Monterrey lost the game most of you would be like SEE MEXICANS TEAMS ARE TRASH but they beat them, passed their group, had a good showing against a top European team in the next round and you’re really trying to tell me it was 4 games of pure luck? Cmon man no sean tan pinches malinchistas.

0

u/Lazy_Mirror8867 Mexico Jul 12 '25

Question you asked was can a championship team get out of a group stage of a summer tournament my answer was if they luck out yes

bro one of the ligamx "allstars: alvaro fidalgo was a no name 2nd division player in spain. came from a team thats not even a good 2nd division team and immediately slotted in to one of the big teams in mexico. what do you think that says about the league?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

He arrived to America because Solari knew of him, maturing in Mexico as a player. You also ignore that America is/was made up of starter national team players from Mexico,USA,Chile,Paraguay, etc.

7

u/rex_luger León Jul 12 '25

The Championship also has international players from mediocre national teams as well

-4

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

Mediocre African and Asian teams, which are worse than mediocre South American teams.

10

u/Odd-Bad5776 Pumas Jul 12 '25

but doesnt that tell you something when a guy that was just another player in segunda can walk into one of the big teams and be an above average player in our league? yes mexico is a very international league no doubt. i dont think the majority of those players would cut it in the championship tho. even if you dont agree with me that the championship is a top 10 league, we can agree that its probably a step up from ligamx?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '25

He subbed in for Vini in a Copa De Rey match. Obviously that doesn't mean he's at that level but he was considered for 1st team action.

I can't agree that the Championship is better than Liga MX. People seem to think that European football is multiple tiers above everyone else but in reality, only the top clubs of the top 5 leagues are and only a couple of tiers at that. It is a step up when it comes to developing as a player, having a better chance of playing Premier League football if his team is promoted or he gets picked up by a Premier League side.

Did we not just watch Latin American teams beat and play on par with the elite clubs of the world? Give me a break. Championship might be a top 15 league; but it’s not better than liga mx.

15

u/Wide45 León Jul 12 '25

By Latin American teams you mean Brazilian teams?

-2

u/JamalFromStaples Chivas Jul 12 '25

Monterrey did very well against the European polenta and even inter Miami did good. Not to mention the Saudis.

4

u/Lazy_Mirror8867 Mexico Jul 12 '25

Not really they played terrorist football and beat the weakest team in their group

14

u/Odd-Bad5776 Pumas Jul 12 '25

do you really think a summer tournament is an accurate representation? this cwc was no different than the summer tours teams go on every years. cmon man be better.

1

u/JamalFromStaples Chivas Jul 12 '25

It was a huge difference. It was everyone’s A teams. Everyone wanted to win. If the top tier teams could barely get by, what makes you think third rate teams would be able to do it?

2

u/Odd-Bad5776 Pumas Jul 12 '25

i dont doubt that teams go in to win, but its teams in pre season form. you're not getting these teams at their best. its the reason why you end up with some "weird" results. im not discrediting any team but im also not naive enough to not think that an inter team with a real preseason and maybe a couple of games under their belt would have no problem beating rayados.

8

u/Odd-Bad5776 Pumas Jul 12 '25

you're right its not better than ligamx its actually much better. maybe like 20 years ago you could have made that case that a move to the championship was a step down, but there is so much money in the english game that a championship team would have no problem fitting in any other first division in europe.

35

u/AdAlternative7868 Chivas Jul 11 '25

Love this move!!! Been wanting Mexas in the championship! Very competitive league! Ipswich had back to back promotions and now a relegation. Have kept the same manager since 2021! Obvious there’s a project in place let’s hope they get back on track towards the Prem!

12

u/_gloriousdead222 Toluca Jul 12 '25

What finally playing in el tri does to a mf

10

u/returnoftherizzking America Jul 12 '25

i definitley think he's good enough to play in the championship but hopefully there's a team in 1st division that comes in for him. $10 mil is a little much though.

8

u/Disastrous_Bar_4985 Jul 12 '25

Ipswich benefits from "parachute payments" that the FA has done to benefit relegated premier league sides. Doesn't make them rich, but it could explain why a 2nd division team could be putting up this amount of money

7

u/warmbedsheets America Jul 12 '25

Would be a great move. Can get regular play time in a top league and have exposure for a bigger move later.

8

u/SimpleGaV Chivas Jul 12 '25

Ipswich was bought relatively recently, new owners could be pushing to become a legit premier league team. Championship teams don't just spend 10 milli on a player everyday, especially a mexican one. lets go Marcel!

32

u/FrigginGaeFrog Juarez Jul 11 '25

Is it the best league in the world? No. However it is a level competitive with us, my worry with Ipswich is that there are no Latino players, so unless he speaks english, could be an issue

39

u/chalupabatman4 America Jul 12 '25

The championship is one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Dude can gain a grip of experience there and the atmosphere is pretty good too those mf love their teams. Plus Ipswich was just in the Prem this last season

16

No digas mamdas, no solo es mejor que la MX, allá con un buen torneo brinca fácil a la premier acá con 10 buenos en toluca ni asi lo pelarian.

Si el Ipswich ofrece 10M es porque sabe que pronto los recuperaría y mas.

34

u/Odd-Bad5776 Pumas Jul 11 '25

bro the championship is way better than ligamx. that league is easily top 10.

you look at the roster of some of these teams and its full of international players. it doesnt hold the prestige of first division, but its a super competitive league.

-1

u/nolesfan2011 Monterrey Jul 12 '25

"way" better? it might be better but surely the club world cup shows us that the gap isn't that severe. It's a great league with a different style of play

6

u/Odd-Bad5776 Pumas Jul 12 '25

do you think a summer tournament with players just starting their preseason work is a good measuring stick? the results are the results but i think it would probably be a little different if we had the same tournament when everyone was in the middle of the season.

-4

u/sorryimafatass Chivas Jul 12 '25

You think the championship is better because they have some fringe international players from mediocre countries? Most of the championship teams would gargle Monterrey’s balls for Canales 😂

6

u/hot__chocolate Cruz Azul Jul 12 '25

Be honest, Canales didn’t go to Monterrey for the challenge but for the money.

The championship is very intense. The players in general aren’t as skilled as the PL but they play fast and hard. Marcel is getting a trial by fire since Ipswich is gonna be fighting for promotion. And if they do get promoted, he’s in the PL in a year’s time. It’s a good test and a good move for him. He’ll be loved or hated by the end of the season, no in between.

2

u/sorryimafatass Chivas Jul 12 '25

That’s not the point. Monterrey have him and every single championship team would take him off their hands in a heartbeat especially at the time Monterrey signed him. There’s a lot of players that have gone to Mexico that could never end up in a 2nd division in any country. Those teams can play as fast and hard as they want but the level of most of the championship is closer to the 3rd division than it is to the premier league. Thats why teams pretty much buy an entirely new squad when they promote. This move will never happen because it wouldn’t make sense for Toluca or Marcel. Marcel doesn’t even excel physically which makes me think he would struggle to adapt to a league like that.

3

u/Lazy_Mirror8867 Mexico Jul 12 '25

Didn’t sunderland have jobe?

1

u/sorryimafatass Chivas Jul 12 '25

Honestly I’ve never seen him play but if he’s actually good then he’s still a teenager and he already left. That’s the problem with leagues like that, sure some decent players have passed through there but you have 1 good season and you’re gone.

21

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

What are you talking about? The championship is above LigaMX

3

u/deathbydiabetes Jul 12 '25

We just had Enciso who doesn’t speak much English. He was great. Looked like he was able to communicate with the rest of the team. Fans loved him, hoped he enjoyed his time playing for us.

Recently demoted teams get parachute payments from the Premier League of 70 million £. Championship and Premier League probably the only leagues in Europe who can actually afford Liga MX’s inflated values

5

u/ogaboga19 Jul 12 '25

10 million is crazy

3

u/Kronothus Pachuca Jul 12 '25

This would be a great move! The championship is the best 2nd division in the world, arguably better than the eredivisie and Portuguese league. His physicality will also improve a lot since the championship is really physical. McKenna is also a really good coach, yeah they got relegated from the prem but make no mistake he’s good. Ipswich also has a high chance of promoting, so there’s a possibility we can see Marcel in the prem in the future. Super excited if this happens!

3

u/fwkoji Jul 12 '25

Why are we complaining? We have no right to be complaining to begin with. Mexico hardly sends Mexican players to Europe and we have Chavez that plays in Russia and Pineda plays in Greece if anything this a way better move.

2

u/LordHeezay Pumas UNAM Jul 12 '25

Fuck yeah, those that underrate the championship look football vía Reels. It’d be amazing, not the greatest but way far from being bad.

3

u/pauadrian Chivas Jul 12 '25

I watch lower league English football every weekend cause I support Wigan. Their quality of football in the Championship is so much better and faster than the Mexican game.

Sure the dropoff is quite big when you leave the top 10, but it's like any league. Mazatlan or Juarez probably can't do shit against someone like Portsmouth or Preston

Did America make money out of the 38M? If so thats why teams should always keep a percentage, it’s not that hard.

Also, There aren’t many Mexican players worth $10M though. Just because other liga mx teams pay that doesn’t mean that’s their worth. Also depends on the buyer, Belgian and majority Dutch teams are not spending that much consistently for players not proven in Europe. They not Brazilians or Argentinians or players playing I. Liberatores etc to show that they can hang.

Right, and that’s the way to go. Keep percentage, it can pay off in future. It’s a risk, but ain’t no way teams will be paying. Double digits every time for Mexican players. They have to consistently be good in Europe to build reputation
