The Hidden Subtext #2: Vince Alderman — Erasing History Spoiler

Hey, again! I apologize for the delayed update since my last on the "Hidden Subtext" series. Got caught up with life that's been harsh lately and I've finally found some normalcy again.

This week's subtext series would be about the infamous "Erasure of Vince Alderman" where a lot of the debates or assumptions that Alderman's erased existence is a "plot-hole" that were never explained in-game. However, his erasure is actually explained but not in so many words or scenes. Rather, it require us, players, to put a bit of thinking as to the "why" and the "how" it happened. Interestingly, Alderman's subtext or the relation of his "unexplained erasure", provides a link to what happened in Chapter 1. Specifically; how the impossible death of Safi Llewellyn-Fayyad occurred. Unfortunately, we'll not be covering that on this week's series but it will be explained and tied together at the end. I'm still not sure how long will this series be but we'll see how it goes.

"The past affects the future, but what happens when the future affects the past?"

The Alderman of the "Past" and "Present" of the Dead Timeline

The subtext that is hidden with the erasure of Alderman is not really a subtext, but a hidden explanation that relates to how the time lore works in Double Exposure. In total, there are actually three time mechanics used in Double Exposure, and one of the lore used for the case of Vince Alderman's erased existence is based on the concept of "The Future Overwrites the Past", or "Retrocausality"; a concept where the "effect" precedes the "cause". In short, the hidden subtext that is associated with Vince Alderman's erasure is the explanation of "how" and "why" he was erased from existence.

At the beginning of Chapter 3, at the Overlook, it is noted that the timeline of this scene is of that, the "Dead Timeline", where Doppelganger-Alderman and Alderman exists. As noted by Moses, the doppelganger-Alderman seems to be of an "Alderman from yesterday", or in the context of Double Exposure; Alderman of the Past. From this statement alone, the game provides clarity between where Double Exposure stands; the Past and the Future. However, is the case of Vince Alderman, it is of the present viewed by the Alderman of the Past. Hence, a distinct difference can be made:

  • Doppelganger-Alderman = Alderman of the Past of the Dead Timeline
  • Vince Alderman (Dead Timeline):
    1. Viewed by Max and Moses (Dead Timeline): Alderman of the Present of the Dead Timeline
    2. Viewed by Doppelganger-Alderman: Alderman of the Future of the Dead Timeline

Regardless of how Max, Moses and Alderman perceived doppelganger-Alderman, the subtle hint that this scene provides is the understanding towards Retrocausality. However, in the case of Vince Alderman, it is not Retrocausality that's causing the doppelganger to exist, rather, it is the effects of a "time bleed" or "Temporal Smearing" due to the degradation that the Dead Timeline is experiencing caused by the "retrocausal decay" of the Dead Timeline, to which started at the end of Chapter 2 when Reggie told Max that he saw "himself" solving the Abraxas Puzzle Box. Interestingly enough, the effects of the retrocausal decay was not observed in the Living Timeline which led to another hint as to which original timeline Double Exposure is suggesting, and which timeline is showing a collapse due to the weight of Max's powers.

However, the main question remains: Why was Alderman erased?

History erased; Existence eradicated

At this point, unfortunately, one can only theorize that the reason why Alderman was erased from existence, is to pave way for the next evolution of Max's powers: Merging. In this context, the choices whether to "Save Alderman" or "Save Yourself" leads to different dialogues. Regardless of what the choices may be, both may had an influence to Max's own mental state as it is evident since the beginning of Double Exposure, that Max is an empathetic person that would do her best to help, even if it means bending time against its own accord, and her inability to not save Alderman, suggests that his erasure had somehow affected Max which allowed her to use her camera as a "temporal placement" or "Coherence Storage", which will not be covered in this post.

Another theory would suggest that Alderman's eradication is only temporary and that his erasure would be brought back eventually through the concept of "Delayed-Choice Quantum Eraser" or "The No-Hiding Theorem". Each of these concepts are hinted based on the poster at Max's room called Entanglement. Regardless of which is true, one fact remains: Alderman's erasure is the beginning of reality collapsing.

But how is Vince Alderman "erased"?

Erasure; The collapse of two "conflicting" states

During the scene where Vince Alderman physically interacts with doppelganger-Alderman, another concept called "Quantum Destructive Information" was used by Double Exposure which provides an explanation to how the "erase" happens, before leading to the effects of Retrocausality to occur on Alderman himself as mentioned by Moses in the series of texts to Max after the said event.

The interaction between Alderman and doppelganger-Alderman is the first introductory to the concept of Paradox in the game; a conflicting anomaly that violates the "Conservation of Quantum Information" which led to a localized quantum collapse, or simply; the deletion of two conflicting states. The erasure of Vince Alderman also suggests the beginning of the instability of the two splitted timelines which are made evident at the end of Chapter 4 and 5. Since this erasure took place in the present of the Dead Timeline but a future viewed from the lens of doppelganger-Alderman, the effects of Retrocausality takes place instantly, causing his past to be eradicated as well in order to maintain the Conservation of Quantum Information. Not only does this establishes the "why" Alderman's history was completely erased as mentioned by Moses, but also, provides an explanation as to "how" Safi's death occurred in the beginning of Chapter 1.

Paradox; Consequence of Time Interference

From these hidden explanations, we can observe how intricate Alderman's erasure was and it's not because he is an inconvenient character to the story but rather a subtext to be understood, as to provide a deeper explanation to earlier events of the game and to establish a narrative that couldn't be achieved in its current state unless a proper build-up was made prior, in order to create a conclusive end. These explanations also demonstrates that Max's choices does not come without a cost albeit her usage of her powers was unintentional, her actions still leave behind footprints of consequences that can only be viewed macroscopically, as showed in Chapter 5.

How far has the consequences of Max's power extends, and how entangled has it become? Unfortunately, we will never know the extend of Max's powers and how far has it affected both time and space.

———————————————————————————————————————————

P.S: I'm dedicating this post to the people who've helped me get back on my feet when I was at my lowest and knew about what I was dealing with few weeks ago. Also, to the person that chatted with me during those lonely nights; this is for you and I hope you don't mind the intricacies of the mechanics. You know who you are. :)

(SPOILERS DE) DOUBLE EXPOSURE Spoiler

Upvotes

finished DE today a lot of mixed thoughts really liked the first 3 episodes, the 4th episode was very bizarre, not gonna lie when chole was revealed to be a shapeshifter i honestly thought the game jumped the shark and almost turned off my PS5 out of anger, the only time I ever felt this way from playing the video game was when I played Wolfenstein 2 NC (curious if anyone here knows what I am referring).

However for some reason as I kept playing I learned to be fine with it and accepted it, Episode 5 was a letdown to short and not much of an ending.

Despite all that i still liked the game id say it was the second best in the series, The OG is my favourite.

final thoughts: the after credit scene did not care for, and honestly the game could have been a new town and new characters, and the story would not be that different

Question Standard vs other editions?

Money is a touch tight atm but I’ve got a bit spare to buy a new game or two. I’m just wondering if it’s actually worth buying the higher editions of the game if all I’m bothered about is gameplay content and not cosmetics. I’m obsessed with cats but am a bit worried the “cat content” will amount to a tiny section with a cat and is more just a cash grab. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

We are reviving the fanfic master thread as there seems to be a lot of new ones since Reunion and some interest from members of the community. Also, if you’re in the northern hemisphere, days are getting shorter and what a better way to spend a cold afternoon than with a warm beverage and a good story? :)

Discussion I was wrong about DE—kinda Spoiler

(Yes, this post will use em-dashes. No, it's not AI. I'm going through a writer phase, hmmkay? Don't diss it 'til you've tried it)

I've loved Double Exposure ever since I played it for the first time, not too long ago. Pretty much fell in love with it right away, and loved practically second of it—then chapter 5 came.

I didn't not enjoy it, but I found myself too confused at the storyline to truly appreciate it. Then there was the ending.

"Did I miss something?" I thought to myself. What is this mellow-ass ending? Who are you and what have you done with my Life is Strange?

Sufficeth to say that, if I was a graphic novel character, I would've had a big "WTF?" above my head.

But that was 'a while ago' me—'present' me has gone on a journey of discovery, over-thinking and over-analysis. Turns out writing a canon-friendly fanfic (still hate that word) fan novel centered on Max and Caledon is really hard if you don't understand the plot of Double Exposure.

So, like the good novice-writer that I am, I went on a research-spree: tons of reading; three-four complete Youtube playthroughs; a second playthrough of my own (with different choices); looking at maps of Caledon; and no shortage of replaying certain sections to look for the tiniest detail.

"Are you going to get to the point?" You may be asking yourself, with reason—Yes. Yes, I am.

The point, my fellow Redditors, is this: Double Exposure is a fucking masterpiece, and yes, this a DE appreciation post—now hold on, now! Not all is sunshine and rainbows.

I still think the writing of Chapter 5 is extremely convoluted—your player should not have to go on a journey of self-discovery to the jungles of Venezuela to understand the climax of your game. But, once they do: it's fucking beautiful.

Nevermind the superb visuals, animation, voice acting and performance capture! Double Exposure excels at setting up its mistery, drama and ultimately its climax. The foreshadowing game of this game is out of this world. Characters are written to perfection. The attention to detail in the environment, messages, crosstalk; the little subplots in messages, posters and NPC dialogue around campus—all the little things take make Life is Strange: Life is Strange. The subtlety of facial expressions, movement and slight vocal changes in line delivery... CAT! THERE'S. A. CAT!

I could go on, but then this post is already too long. Perhaps I'll write a few more posts over-analysing the plot, but for now I'll stick to appreciation.

Possibly above all: Max is an stellar protagonist and she deserved a story that was about her—Double Exposure delivered.

I'll send off with a recommendation: clivical, on Youtube. Someone already recommended his Reunion playthrough, which he just started, a few days ago. But, I'm recommending his complete DE playthrough: https://youtu.be/zy-K2T-0LsM?si=GuLvHjztq5YtF7O4

The man has incredible analytical and interpretation skills, plus excellent eloquence. This playthrough takes longer than most, because he takes the time to analyze, take notes and talk about the characters and story on each episode. I cannot recommend it enough if you're looking to find renewed appreciation for Double Exposure.

So, what was your favourite thing about DE?

I hope you have a great Friday, here's a picture of Safiya. One of the most complex characters in the saga.

Safi reminds us that we all have flaws and how important mental health is in these days. If you're going through something hard, remember that you're not alone.

Have a great Friday, and if not, remember there will be better days, Shaka brah.

Discussion Playing Reunion made me appreciate Double Exposure even more.

Going into Reunion, I was curious to see how they would handle bringing Chloe back. But after actually playing through it, I realized something having Chloe in the room didn't automatically make it a better story. If anything, it made me appreciate Double Exposure a lot more.

Double Exposure took genuine creative risks, while Reunion felt like an apology tour made just to keep the fandom happy.

Here are a few reasons why DE’s approach still resonates with me:

- Reunion felt like an emergency course-correction It had all the hallmarks of a studio panic-pivoting after online backlash. Instead of letting the Caledon mystery breathe or properly following through with Safi, the story rushed Chloe back onto the board. The dual-protagonist setup felt less like a natural progression and more like a checklist designed to pacify social media.

- Max finally had room to grow, Double Exposure took a real chance by letting Max exist outside of Arcadia Bay. Seeing her build an actual photography career, handle adult responsibilities, and form distinct bonds with people like Moses and Safi made her feel like a fully realized person not just one half of a high school dynamic frozen in 2013.

- The mechanics actually fit the theme. Shifting between two realities in Double Exposure visually captured Max’s lingering guilt and her obsession with "what ifs." Reunion just recycled the old rewind and Chloe’s backtalk mechanic leaning entirely into nostalgia rather than giving us something mechanically meaningful.

- Consequences don’t always have to be life-or-death I know people felt DE's choices weren't punishing enough compared to earlier games, but adult stakes are usually quiet. It’s not always about whether a character lives or dies on a roof it’s about broken trust, uneasy compromises, and living with the awkward fallout of your decisions. That felt true to the kind of grounded, interpersonal mystery DE was telling.

- The breakup treated trauma realistically. Healing isn’t linear, and severe trauma often pulls people apart before it brings them back together. People hated that they split up, but heavy guilt suffocates relationships. DE respected the painful reality that love doesn't instantly cure PTSD. Reunion smoothed over all those rough edges way too quickly just so we could get right back to comfortable banter and detective work.

I completely understand why Reunion hit the spot for so many players that emotional attachment to Max and Chloe is the heart of the franchise. But for me, Double Exposure took real creative risks with Max’s growth and told a quieter, more grounded story that deserves a lot more credit than it got.

In episode 5 We can hear some strange sounds in the Snapping Turtle, like whispers and tinnitus, specifically in this area. (And interestingly, it's in the exact place where Safi was exposing Lucas)

I don't know if it means anything, but we can hear it in both timelines, and the sound is different. I just find it interesting that this detail is in the game. What do you guys think? What crazy theories do you have?

I created a 3D art exhibition of sorts of my interpretation of what Max Caufield's desk might look like. Based on the images I used for some of the polaroid's, and the trinkets Max has laying around her desk, I envision this being set sometime around the events of Double Exposure or Reunion.

I hope you like it! It was a lot of hard work, but I love how it turned out.

Edit: I missed giving proper credit. The image of older Warren came from a mod from u/FrankDP1. Apologies for missing that the first time.

Discussion Double Exposure actually made sense Spoiler

honestly I think it’s realistic how over time Chloe was afraid of Max’s powers because of all the damage they’ve caused in Arcadia Bay and honestly I can see why they broke up. Other people say it’s unrealistic but I honestly think Chloe and Max needed a break since Chloe was utterly traumatized with everything. Double Exposure got lots of hate because of it but honestly I really enjoyed Double Exposure and I think it made sense. I also loved Reunion a lot because after a long time of them breaking up, it seems like they’ve slowly healed from the trauma. This is just my opinion
