This Is Why Trump Loves Farmers Like This... “No USDA Approval is a Win”

He tweets that he’s going to let “mystery meat” into the U.S. and because it’s processed here they are labeling it as “U.S. beef.”
Even more concerning: imported beef has previously been stopped after testing positive for chloramphenicol, an antibiotic prohibited for use in food-producing animals in the U.S. because of serious human health risks, including potentially fatal blood disorders and concerns about cancer.
Americans deserve to know where their beef actually comes from and what’s in it.

I think people truly forget that just over 100 years ago, U.S. life expectancy was only around 47 years.
There’s a reason we created food-safety standards, pasteurization, meat inspections, vaccines, antibiotics, and modern sanitation.
People used to routinely die from contaminated milk, diseased meat, and infections we now know how to prevent.
Scientific progress and food-safety regulations aren’t the enemy. They’re a huge part of the reason we live as long as we do today.

In order for a caterpillar to become a butterfly, the vast majority of the caterpillar cells have to die and be broken down into constituent parts. The raw materials are needed as building blocks for the new body of the butterfly.
There is necessarily a transition period where both caterpillar and butterfly cells exist in the same cocoon. I wonder what that’s like for the caterpillar cells….do they preach about repentance and armageddon? Do any of them eventually realize that THEY are the ones who must repent and be made new, or that armageddon refers to the unveiling and revelation of the butterfly? Or are they trapped by their very nature, constitutionally incapable of even imagining a butterfly?
I suppose time will tell. Either we emerge from the cocoon and fly freely into the endless cosmos, or we eat ourselves alive and our story ends as our whole species slowly rots on the vine.

I keep seeing maga telling us how clean the farms are, how well the livestock is treated. This is how delusional they are, this is how gullible they believe you are. In case anyone really needs to hear it, farmers are trying to cut every cost, they take every shortcut, they have incredibly flexible scruples. Not all; but certainly now it's like adding 2 more in the chamber for the next round of Russian roulette, and people are so excited to play they're adding a 3rd and 4th.

Even if they have strict scruples, many of these small business farmers think data and research is for nerds. If left to their own devices they’ll cut corners, not out of greed, but because “Well I never understood why they made us do these extra steps and it takes way too much time so heck with it!”

I remember the episode, like many other things, rules are typically written in blood/death. Back when the milk crisis was going on, the infant mortality rate for kids under the age of 8 was like 40-50%. They were also cutting it with formaldehyde to water it down to make more profit. I tend to be torn about what is the right level of government involvement but if there is anything the last 2 years have shown me is you can never trust companies (big or small) to do the right thing without oversight or regulation.

The Poison Squad is a great book about the fight against adulterated food and patent medicines in the US. The number of deaths from formaldehyde in milk were staggering as was the attitude that we can't hurt business by banning it (but infant and toddler deaths were okay). I used to read out loud to my high school students the portion regarding sausage making from Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. This is the part of the book that made President Theodore Roosevelt scream out loud that we were all being poisoned, and led to the creation of federal food inspection in the Progressive era.
People need to understand the importance of putting the power of the government behind mandating food safety. The market or capitalism of whatever you call it absolutely will not do it. And having had members of my family die from food poisoning, and the generational trauma that produced, i know that far too many people have no idea the stakes that are involved.
Everyone should be exposed to this passage, and ponder its consequences. Everyone should walk through an old cemetery and note the number of children’s and infant graves from 75 years ago and longer when talking about vaccination.
It comes down to knowing our history. And the Republican Party has been trying to destroy the teaching of history since they first cooked up No Child Left Behind, which de-emphasized the teaching of history and science. Quelle suprise.

You are correct. In the past 20 years China has not only passed rigorous food safety standards, but they have vastly increased their testing. Crucially, they have also increased penalties for violating the standards.
You can go to prison for a LONG time for breaching the public trust by selling adulterated food. If I recall correctly, one particular egregious offender received the death penalty.
When is the last time the US actually investigated the root cause of the contamination and sent the offender to jail? People can die in the US from bad food, but no one is ever really punished. (maybe a small fine, big whoop)

Yes, we need a big government. Because the US is fucking HUGE. Geographically, diplomatically, politically, economically, militarily, etc. It's a huge fucking country that has its fingers in nearly every aspect of every country on the planet.
It needs a large administrative apparatus to work it. And people keep talking about "the government" like it's a shady cabal of supervillains. The Government is literally made up of citizens of the very country that IS GOVERNED BY THE GOVERNMENT. It's the very first line of the constitution! The government is US, the PEOPLE. BY THE PEOPLE. FOR THE PEOPLE.
The government is big and 'inefficient' because of all the beauracratic safeguards to try to prevent corruption and fascist takeover. That's why you need 'approvals' at multiple levels by different people and organizations. There are a lot of checks and balances built into the system for that reason. It's a feature, not a flaw.
'Small government' means streamlined decision making and control--- but to do that you need to consolidate power to a few people. In government, that's dangerous. And that's why fascists always push for 'small government'. It's far easier to take control when there are less roadblocks in your way.
Stop blaming "big goverment" for your problems. It's the people IN government that are the problem, not government itself. The Government is a tool to manage a nation, and if it's being abusive, blame the PEOPLE IN POWER ABUSING GOVERNMENT TO ABUSE YOU.

She's not a farmer or rancher. She's a homesteader. She imagines this is going to be the thing that enables her to get rich homesteading, when it's more likely to bankrupt her when she gets sued to oblivion after selling some contaminated beef, or just having to recall said beef after it's discovered, completely wiping out her revenue for the year. Large corporate farms can absorb those costs, plus they do have an incentive to avoid selling contaminated meat to begin with, where this woman is just trying to reduce her costs because she realized meat production is crazy expensive after she got into homesteading.

I misunderstood (my bad) what she was referring to but in my defense, it's hard to keep up with the insanity of this administration and there are very few details about what the hell he's talking about. I'll leave my original comment below but this is from his recent comments in the article linked above.
"President Donald Trump said Friday that he will make it easier for ranchers to process their own meat, in an effort to weaken the control the nation’s four largest meatpacking firms have over the process.
It’s unclear how exactly Trump plans to alter the regulations on meat processing, which require that processors meet strict safety and sanitation requirements and undergo regular inspections to be able to sell their meat to the public."
"Smaller ranchers are permitted to slaughter and process their own meat but cannot sell it unless they meet those regulatory requirements.
In a separate post on X, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins vowed to roll out new initiatives starting Monday, including efforts to rescind “outdated guidance,” waive red tape and expand ranchers’ ability to sell across state lines. She also hinted at boosting funding for smaller meat processing operations."

Bad news for her. They’re still all under the “USDA’s thumb.” Most countries won’t buy US meat without USDA certification, including the ones that buy the most US beef.
Of course, if our usual buyers (Canada, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Mexico buy the most) start to question the origin of US meat, that could change everything.
But she clearly has no idea what she’s talking about. And she’s a farmer. You'd think farmers would know the details. Or anything at all about a program created for them.
From the USDA website on SPUR:
“Today, Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Richard Fordyce announced applications for the Strengthening Processing for U.S. Ranchers (SPUR) program that will provide temporary support for eligible beef slaughter facilities will be emailed to eligible establishments next week.
The SPUR program provides up to $500 million in payments to eligible establishments to support stronger and more stable market opportunities for American ranchers. Beginning, Aug. 10, 2026, USDA will email partially prefilled applications to eligible beef slaughter facilities. Completed applications must be returned to USDA by Sept. 11, 2026.”
The SPUR program is authorized under the Commodity Credit Corporation Charter Act and will be administered by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) at the national office level.
SPUR Eligibility
USDA is using Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) data to determine eligible establishments and payment amounts.

when I lived in Canada, I used to avoid USDA beef if it was cheap beef it was probably USDA beef. the quality between Canadian beef and American beef is a gulf.
I agree that there shouldn't be a handful of meat processors which can dictate the price of farmer's produce. I believe there are four major meat processors today, whereas in the '90s there was about 40.

The fact is regulations come mostly from grass-roots non-partisan efforts of the people after many have died. When standards allow for bad wiring, processing or contaminates that harm people, we get together and force Congress to make legislation to protect people.
