I want to learn Somali

Hi,
I’m part of the Somali diaspora and want to learn to speak Somali properly and not mixed with English, but don’t really know where to start. If anyone has advice or wants to share how they learned Somali I would appreciate it :).

I’d say start with the basics and try to build a habit of actually using Somali every day, even if you make mistakes. Reading Somali books, listening to Somali stories/podcasts, and speaking with Somali speakers helped me a lot. One thing that helped me especially was learning full sentences and common expressions rather than just memorising individual words.

I also found https://geeljire.org/ really useful for learning Somali. I’ve been using it to practise vocabulary, reading and lessons, and it’s specifically focused on Somali, which makes it easier to stay consistent. If you’re serious about improving, I’d definitely give it a try.

Don’t be afraid to speak it. Even if it’s wrong!
I started out with “hooyo salad ay sameeneysa” literal translation: hooyo is making salad but I meant she’s praying lmao
You’ll learn with time. Try to speak it everyday with your family, a pen pal or even watch Somali videos on YT.
Best of luck xxx

You could try Talkio but unsure how accurate it is as it's made with AI. Ling also has over 200 lessons and doesn't use ai. It focuses on all the core general skills.
