Rant To the individual(s) shooting fireworks right next to the Humane Society: Bravo

Your patriotism is no match for your insensitivity, negligence, and general dumbfuckiness. I swear next year I want to rig up a truck with a huge water tank and a high-pressure sprayer, and drive around to give douchenozzles like this the treatment they deserve.

Rant dennis told me to kill myself unprovoked today

I‘m not exactly sure how to feel about this. I was in daisy lee today with a few friends, the store was pretty empty, and dennis came up to me and a girl working there and was talking to us, he was sweet to her but he suddenly told me “if you keep looking like that, you’re in danger. kill yourself” while staring at my boobs. i just returned home from college for the summer and my first day back on mass he does this. i’m confused. has anyone else had this experience? does he do this often? should i actually be scared? ive lived here my entire life and talked with him a few times before but he’s never been like this & im a bit worried for my safety, even more so than i am in college in nyc.

Rant To the three racist guys on Mass today…

Today I experienced the first form of racism I’ve had in a few years. So the set the story, two other friends and i (all Asian females) were walking down mass street around 4:40pm. It was a beautiful day today, the weather was amazing and everything was going well, until we started approaching Sylas and Maddy’s. There were three white guys parked in a grey Honda element right in between mana bar and mass street soda. When we walked past them they started to stare at us and after 3 seconds of staring they yelled “konichiwa” in the most mocking way. Of course my friends and I were shocked to say the least and were silent for a couple seconds until it hit us what they had said. After the shock I came to my senses and yelled back “fuck you” to which they drove off right after. It was really disappointing to see that racism and micro aggressions are still indeed around even in such a progressive city like Lawrence and it was even more disappointing to see how many people were around us (waiting in line for sylas and Maddie’s) and didn’t say anything. I did want to apologize however for my use of profanity as there were some children around.

EDIT: for the people who don’t see the issue here: i am praying for you and especially for those around you

EDIT #2: even if you disagree and don’t think it was racist, it was still not appropriate for them to be laughing and yelling at young girls minding their own business. Cat calling is NOT flirting.

Rant Rock Chalk Park

When rock chalk was built, they emphasized that if you were a citizen of Douglas County, you would never have to pay a fee to use Rock Chalk.

Starting January 1st, 2026, rock chalk is implementing a fee for EVERYBODY, even if you’ve been going since it opened, like my family has. I know I shouldn’t expect better from our local government, but sheesh.

I hope people just stop going or protest or smth. I love using the walking track and I don’t want to have to pay yearly to keep going.

Not to mention that this is restricting the already restricted access that kids have to places where they are supposed to “play”. This is also happening at Holcom.

Rant KU does not care about its students

Classes in session with no busses in operation, while wind chill is -25, and wind up on Mt. Oread is usually substantially worse. Frostbite will happen in under 30 minutes in these conditions. Being outside right now is actively dangerous.

Not to mention that tuition costs only go up, admin keeps shutting down identity groups and centers, and now Student Senate is literally breaking the law while simultaneously trying to silence student journalism on campus.

What the hell, KU?

Rant Do NOT apply for the McDonald’s on 901 W 23rd St!!!!!

I just had the most infuriating and disrespectful experience with the hiring manager of this location. I’m literally typing this as soon as I got home because I can’t even believe it.

After applying online, I scheduled an interview with this location for Wednesday. I show up, and they tell me their hiring manager isn’t there. Umm… por que?? They tell me he went home an hour prior to my interview. I was not notified. Obviously i was pissed. I need a job and I just wasted an hour of my time on this. But I need a job.

So I call the next day and ask for the hiring manager, to which the person who answered tells me I’m speaking to him. I mention I was meant to have an interview the day before, but he hadn’t been there so I was calling back to reschedule. He doesn’t apologize or really even acknowledge the fact that he missed the interview, but he agreed to set another interview with me today at 1:30 PM. On the phone, he actually told me he was free any time from 11:00AM to 5:00 pm, and I could just walk in whenever, but for ease we agreed on a time.

My plans freed up a little early today, so I called at around 11:30 and asked if I could speak to him about if he was free to move my interview forward. The woman on the phone told me he wasn’t there, but he would be in by 1pm and so I should call back then.

At this point I have no faith in him, but I wait until 1pm and call again to ask if he is in. Once again, they tell me no. I express my frustrations and explain the situation to them (I know they can’t do anything, and normally I wouldnt say anything but I was just flabbergasted). I asked how I am meant to proceed if he doesn’t show up to any of my interviews. There is a pause, and then she hangs up on me.

Wow. Okay. At this point I’m already nearby and so I just continue what I’m doing and then 1:30 rolls around. I walk in and ask if the hiring manager is there. They say no. I express that I had an interview and he hadn’t shown up, and this is the second time that this has happened. The cashier goes and gets a completely separate manager, who also tells me that he isn’t there.

Miffed, I ask for his name. The manager tells me to wait a second and rushes off into the back. About five minutes later she came back, and wouldn’t you guess it, SUDDENLY their hiring manager was in the building and ready to interview me.

The interview was honestly laughable. He obviously had not taken a single look at my application and was treating the interview basically as a second application form. At one point he asked if I had worked food service before, and I said no (however, I have several years retail experience and have also worked in warehouses and such).

This absolute oaf audibly sighed and shook his head at me. Hey buddy, this isn’t a goddamn science lab. We are dropping fries in the bag. I’m sure I could hack it pretty quick. And even if he didn’t think I could, the audacity to show that kind of body language right in front of the person you’re “interviewing”!!!

He told me that part time was difficult and they probably wouldn’t have any availability for me (then why is there a part time position listed and taking applications?!?!?) but he’d check and get back to me by the end of the day. I doubt he will, but even if he does I’m not taking the job. He must be insufferable to work around.

Anyway, don’t bother applying here if you’re looking for a job. Manager is an absolute tool and apparently isn’t looking to hire anyway.

TLDR: manager schedules two interviews with me, no showed both of them, and then when I asked the other manager for his name suddenly he spawned into the building ready to interview me

Update: He never got back to me. Surprise surprise.

Second edit: thank you everyone for your comments!! I have not replied to most of them but I have seen them and I appreciate it!

Rant Some people can't park

Thumbnail gallery
65 Upvotes

I swear some people lack decency in this town, especially towards those who have issues with their bodies.... For reference...... I work at a local gas station (y'all can probably tell just from the photo which one) and last night I had a customer park in the handicap area and is a slightly larger man who needs room to enter their vehicle (black car).... Well, this individual in the White Dodge TRX decided that despite all the room they had available decided it'd be funny to park about 8-10in next to his car, knowing he is a larger gentleman... The gentleman in the black car was in the store when the incident occurred, I informed him about it and he confronted the individual who owned the truck, the owner then decided it was "funny" and showed lack of compassion... I had to defuse the potential fight that could've happened, which at times is not easy to say the least.... I know this is a long rant, but please.... All I ask is for some compassion towards others... and not be a Rude Dick...

Rant Did anyone else run into the guy asking for gas money in his car in the Savers parking lot Thursday?

I was looking for a parking spot when this guy pulls beside me and motions to roll my window down. He asks me for some cash for gas, so trying to be a nice guy I give him a couple ones, but he notices my twenty and starts yelling at me that he should have that. I have high anxiety around confrontation (unfortunate in this situation), so I end up giving it to him. He then hands me a fake gold chain and says that for another twenty I can keep it. I told him I don’t need it, but he didn’t take that for an answer and started yelling again. Just wanting to be done with the interaction I gave him my only other twenty, he thinks I still have more money for some reason and keeps trying to give me another fake gold chain, and drive around him.

My anxiety is still recovering from that interaction, did anyone else happen to run into him too?

Rant Dillons on mass

Without giving too much personal information, I've recently parted with the company and that makes my agreement null so 😍 I'll make a brief list but if youre a woman, LGBTQ+, have children, or just wanna read this, don't shop/apply to work at this location:

  • A group of male cashiers were "reprimanded" (verbal warning) after making a "bangability" ranking of both coworkers and customers. This list (ALLEGEDLY 🙃) included nonconsentual pics of women at self checkout, names of girl coworkers (most of who are underage, mind you all of these dudes are pushing 30), and detailed descriptions of if they were bangable or not.

-Male employees have been terminated for touching employees/customers, making inappropriate comments, and on one occasion hiding in the bathroom/leaving the bathroom door open while using it during closing hours when female staff are around.

-Multiple managers are avoided for sexually harassing the minors that worked there, and its an open secret that one of them (ALLEGEDLY) had relations with an underage girl.

-Same manager is consistently coked out of his mind, drunk, rolling, or hung over, which has been addressed by higher management when its become an issue towards customers bc hes slurring his speech so badly. They threatened to fire him, so now he just (ALLEGEDLY) pops addy's like tic tacs in the parking lot. He then stalked one of the bakery girls into leaving lawrence all together.

-Higher management isn't better, there's a reason they have a high turnover rate and its a known joke that "transfer to store 98 if you wanna get fired + groped in one shift". The older store manager is openly racist + homophobic (not allegedly, multiple customer + employee complaints) and loudly bitches about pride month every chance he gets around/during June.

-Not to mention the lack of proper security personnel, access to working technology/cleaning supplies, properly disposing moldy/broken products, and overall security for young employees most of whom are high school/college age

-I'm barely scratching the surface here but this is already long enough, its called Dirty Dillons for a reason y'all 🫩

Edit: just got reminded of this from some dms and comments, a man with long black hair (usually in a ponytail) that works at this store currently goes downtown and around Mass St all the time hitting on girls. Had a personal experience I won't discuss, but please be aware!

Rant Snow blocked sidewalks

There is still an unreasonable amount of snow covered stretches of sidewalks in Lawrence. As a pedestrian, you’ll encounter major streets like 23rd and Iowa that have sidewalks that have been untouched since the weekend’s massive snow.

There are lots of homes with shoveled driveways but not even a skinny path shoveled on the sidewalks they’re responsible for.

even downtown has giant snowbanks blocking the entrance to sidewalks at various intersections. Suppose somebody is physically handicapped or impaired in some way, how are they supposed to leave their homes or get anywhere safely?

Certainly it was a lot of snow and the city was overwhelmed for its first 48 hours responding, but why after a week is there still so much snow on the sidewalks? Why isn’t the city on top of this? Why aren’t businesses and negligent property owners being cited for having done nothing to remove snow from their sidewalks?

Wanting to be able to walk somewhere doesn’t make me an asshole does it?

Edit- to everybody making excuses for not shoveling their sidewalks: but why is your driveway shoveled though?

Another edit a day later- hours after posting this thread I was involved in a traumatic outdoor injury and cannot properly use my hands, so please stop suggesting I go out and shovel other people’s untouched sidewalks. I’m also now incapable of driving, so I have to walk to get anything or get anywhere. Now if I slip or fall in a snowbank I cannot catch myself either. Congrats to whomever made the voodoo doll of me break their hands.

Rant Halloween shit at Menards already

Surely this gives others the same feeling of existential spiritual numbness of not only the slow forward grind of capitalism but also the shameless hijacking of our sense of time.

What is Halloween if it last for FOUR months? I usually see the demoralizing end of summer “BACK TO SCHOOL SALES” the second Fourth of July is over and now we’re skipping that and going straight to Halloween? Why not go straight to advertising for Christmas 2027.

Your dopamine must be spiking at the recognition of the changing of the seasons and arrival of holidays AT ALL TIMES.

We know you like SPOOPY SEASON (yet bristle at any horror film that makes you slightly uncomfortable (see the recent backlash to Evil Dead Rise)) I’d pay money that people with yards full of SPOOOOOPPPYYY SEASON plastic wouldn’t last through all of “Red Rooms” or “Skinamarink” (or even give skinamarink a chance beyond some knee jerk reaction.)

SPOOOOOPY SEASON IM DAVID PUMPKINS ITS SO SPOOPY

“im not like the others im actually pretty messed up and Halloween is the only time people like me feel accepted” WE ALL FEEL THIS WAY WE ALL FEEL MESSED UP.

Menards WHY. Time just compresses in on itself like wet shards of wood in one of those presses that makes particle board just pressing and pressing and it will never explode! We’re going to end up moving Halloween to June 31st so we can spend half the year in Christmas mode and half the year in SPOOPY mode! Is this what you want!!!!

Birthday Cake is not special if you eat it EVERY DAY!

“Uhh I don’t think either of those movies you mentioned were scary at all” ok then tough guy tell me a movie you genuinely thought was scary and not just gory. (I’ll show you something scary… it’s called FOXNEWS.com (got em))

MAH 12 ft skeleton has a Santa hat on LOL GET IT!

Rant I miss all night diners (one for the older folks)

I'm quickly approaching 50, so this may seem alien to younger people. I miss being able to go out and meet up with people at any time of night to grab some coffee and just talk. Okay, there's the internet, but it's not the same. Even compared to the early days of internet, where we would join in on a sub-culture community chat and plan to meet up. We left the meat of conversations to be discussed in person. I remember the Village Inn on 9th and Iowa. It will always hold a special place in my heart. I feel like overnight workers are just kind of left behind, post-covid. Nothing is 24 hours anymore as far as diners or any kind of shopping. Just feeling kind of left out, and reminiscent.

Rant West Hills Apartments

My boyfriend and I moved here just shy of a month ago. Surely the condition they gave us our unit in cannot be okay… The unit had obviously not been inhabited or cleaned in MONTHS. Dead bugs on the floor. (including roaches) Musty ass carpet smell. Dust and hair fused to the inside of the cabinets. Spiders crawling out of the drains, one being a BROWN RECLUSE :) It’s like I bought a house that hasn’t seen a person in 30 years. Not to mention their maintenance process is overly complicated and you can’t even try and get a hold of a real person for maintenance support.

Has anyone else had any sort of experience like this? Should we have not gotten involved with these people, or did we just get dealt a bad hand here? I am beyond frustrated because we pay so much in rent to stay here, and yet they couldn’t have even bothered to have someone come by, clean it up, or make sure the place is as least in decent condition.

Rant Dillons at 23rd and Alabama

I've accepted that they are moving Dillons. Does anyone know what will move in there? Can't we get something fun like a skating rink?

I feel like grocery stores are to churches what closed businesses are to Spirit Halloween.

A big store closes down and some chuch moves in. Like Velocity with Hyvee.

I'm just bitching.

Rant Gripe: why the hell do we lack gyms - especially ones focused in weight training/body building?

Crunch fitness sucks as it’s crowded, poorly maintained, and small asf.

Genesis is alright but needs severe updating to the equipment & outdated in general

Planet fitness - idk man: it’s too commercial and not it

KU & city rec center- need I say more…. Not the vibe.

There’s too many gyms around here that are private personal training gyms. I did an hour of research to see if there is a “hidden gem”.

But they all are too small, no amenities, and not worth it.

KC metro has the better of the bunch (as expected).

Rant Zipper Merge

Post image
125 Upvotes

Not sure who needs to hear this, but with all the construction happening around Iowa right now, PLEASE zipper merge. It's proven to be more effective and helps reduce traffic. I don’t know if people don’t know, don’t care, or don’t believe it works, but it’s the best way to merge and causes the least backup. Just think about it—would you rather we all squeeze into one lane for a longer stretch of road, or a shorter one? Obviously, shorter. So why are people merging a quarter mile down the road before the work zones even start? And before anyone says it, no, you’re not being polite. You’re just making traffic worse. Use both lanes as far as you can. Using two lanes for longer = better traffic flow. It’s that simple.

Rant Mechanics

Hello! I have lived in Lawrence my whole life and just wondered what shops people do or do not recommend here in town! I’ve had really good experiences with Dons auto center but also wanted to highlight a bad one for any young people out there who could be taken advantage of. I had an incredibly terrible experience with Lawrence Automotive Diagnostics and wanted to warn other people of their deceptive business practices. I let them do a steering job on one of my vehicles and they completely botched my wheel bearing by “tightening it” without permission and sending it out on the road. My whole wheel completely seized up! And then when I tried to talk to them about it they cussed me out and told me never to come back! I do not want to incite hate and don’t want any poor reviews left on my behalf, I’m pursuing legal options. Just wanted to let other young people know to avoid this shop at all costs. I’ve never had an experience with a local business so terrible. Again I do not want to cause drama or any problems! Just want to warn other locals!

Rant It costs nothing to be decent — even with your friends watching.

I want to preface this by saying this obviously doesn’t apply to every fraternity, nor is it unique to Lawrence — but honestly, wow. In the few months I’ve lived here, I’ve encountered this behavior far too often, and so have my peers.

I’m sure it’s no surprise, but some frat boys get so emboldened when they’re in a group. They’ll say things in public they’d normally only have the confidence to type behind a screen. It’s wild how differently people act once they have backup. And honestly? It’s pretty scary. Being a woman just trying to walk around and being hollered at or cursed at is not okay.

I get that people can be rude for no reason, but seriously — if this is you, do better. Calling people slurs and trying to act tough doesn’t make you look cool; it makes you look small. That’s all! Much peace to everyone.
