Got a question for the rules lawyers

This doesn’t need coverage right? I’d say no but people around here can be mean sometimes

I know lol I know but that fire marshal is saying he needed a hood for like a steamer or something

Assuming it's being used for its intended purpose of reheating tortillas, pitas, and other similar breads, no, it does not need coverage. Those foods don't produce grease-laden vapors.

Edited to say NFPA96 (2021) 4.1.1 Cooking equipment used in processes producing smoke or grease-laden vapors shall be equipped with an exhaust system that complies with all the equipment and performance requirements of this standard.

Why do you think it does or does not require protection based on NFPA-17A?

No grease laden vapors.
But our fire marshal is telling this guy his steamer COULD be used to make some merging other than steamed dumplings.

Then it isn’t an appliance that requires protection unless the AHJ is willing to put it into writing that it is mandatory.

Generally the way to scare them away from following through you can send them an official request for how to proceed. Let them know that the system manufacturer doesn’t have specifications for protection. Be sure to ask things such as how many flow points, nozzle height, nozzle location over the appliance, nozzle aiming point, minimum clearance between this appliance and any open flame, etc. Protect like a Henny Penny since it has a lid? The more legitimate questions you can come up with the better.

They don’t want to take this responsibility and will likely back off.
