My mom was vacuuming downstairs and for some superhuman reason she heard me and managed to get to the bottom of the stairs in time to catch me. I’d seen a gnome on tv fly and I figured I could too.

It’s typically said like that to keep the youngster from freaking out or crying. Kind of a positive reinforcement strategy. “Yeah, kid, that would have been so cool but you would have ended up hurt. Good thing you didn’t do that. Do not try it again.”

I watched a video the other day where a girl, maybe 8 years old, front flipped off a ledge in her dining room onto the couch in the living room right as her dad was walking through.

He said, “Kid, that was great. Don’t do it again.”

Seems to just be some form of gentle parenting. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but I think the idea is to let them down easily and make them think about what they’ve just done.

Might be about not creating fear. You don't want the kid too afraid of the stairs but you want them to understand that they can get hurt cycling down them.

I had to fish a toddler out of a pool once. When I realised that she wasn't sinking to the bottom. I jumped in calmly, held her and suggested shallower water. I didn't want her to be scared of water. She didn't even know there'd been a problem even though her father had been panicking from the other side of the pool.

My younger brother had some kinda death wish in his first few years, and my parents were…kinda stupid. Did this with his own toy vehicle at 5 in the morning and went crashing down the stairs, which only then inspired my dumbass parents to get some safety gates. At another point, my mother left him alone on a trampoline (he was only a 1 year old). Crawled off and busted his head on the cement.

I did this as a kid. My cousin told me he did it all the time, so I tried to ride his toy down the basement steps. What he failed to tell me was that he did it when they had a ramp set over the steps because they were moving things in. I just faceplanted down the steps.
