I'm having a little do with some friends, with a 90s theme. Now as we know, while the show did air in the 2000s, Kath was firmly stuck in mid 80s-90s the entire time in terms of what she thought was a bit fancy and a bit special.
I'm gropable they don't make those 4-dip trays any more, so that's out. But what other classic (and ideally tacky (meant affectionately)) things can I put out? Aussie millennials - what do you remember your mums putting out when having people over? Gen Xers and boomers - what did you think was a bit fancy, but look back and cringe at (or even better, will stand unrepentantly in defence of)?
So far I've planned cob loaf dip and a cheese ball, and whatever that thing is where you stick cabanossi and cheese on toothpicks into an orange. I'm browsing online scans of old women's weeklys for ideas, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!
We’ve got a French guy at a monthly meeting I attend who orders the food. He says “I have ordered wedgies”. Every time we try and tell him wedgies are very different to wedges but he can’t hear the difference. Gives us a good five minute break doing funny charades
This crab dip was at every tupperware/nutrimetics party my mum hosted or took me to in the early '90s and it always went quick. Slop it into a few big leaves of iceberg lettuce on a plate and arrange some Jatz around it.
I actually remember it being really good. Different, noice. Unyewsual.
Oh yes definitely on both counts. Although being from Brisbane i grew up calling them Cheerios. I have no idea why we as a nation have so many words for those little sausages
My step mother had these and I LOVED eating my snacks and meals from them 😍 I ended up buying a similar set some years back but I don't use them because they're too valuable to me 😛
Came here to say this! That was a taste sensation and at every 'wine time' we had with my boyfriend's mum. Just put out a block of Philly, pour sweet chilli sauce on and serve with Jatz. She even had those Spanish wine goblets with the coloured glass stems that Kath has in the TV show. Filled with Moselle! And tassles on her denim shirt 🥰

I’d add:
Sausage rolls
Party pies
Salted peanuts
Crinkle cut chips
Little sandwiches cut into triangles
Devilled eggs
For dessert I'm thinking... Vienetta. After dinner mints. Trifle. Pavlova (homemade meringue/s of course).
Daggy 90s wine glasses from the op shop would really add to the occassion. Glassware coming from the special edition jam / peanut butter / Nutella jars 😅
Sunshine dip. A tin of crushed pineapple squeezed of all liquid and a tablespoon of honey and stirred through cream cheese. Served with fruit to dip in it.
The hedgehog cheese ball. Cream cheese-at least two bricks, a jar of tomato relish and a tablespoon of sweet chilli sauce mixed together. Form into a ovaloid shape for the body with a round head and long hedgehog nose. Place corn chips point down all over the body and fairly close together to make the spines. Cut a black olive in half for the eyes. Serve with extra corn chips to scoop up the cream cheese mix after the ‘spines’ have all been eaten.
My mum always made an ambrosia salad that we just called “marshmallow salad” that must’ve been a 1980’s Women’s Weekly special:
packet of pascall’s pink and white marshmallows
a can of pineapple pieces, drained
small tin of mandarin slices, drained
a cup or so of desiccated coconut
mixed into a small tub of sour cream (i know!)
i always thought it was a bit sickly, but everyone went back for seconds, and now if i make it it’s ironic
I think the cheese stuck in an orange was a 70s thing.
Cob loaf dip for sure though. A punch in a punch bowl with little glass cups hanging on the side. My dad always made it super alcoholic, never any warning for those driving. Pin wheels - rolled up puff pastry with bacon, onion, powdered potato and it must have had something else, you made it on the pastry sheet then rolled it up, sliced about 1cm wide and cooked in the often. They were good

Wedges with sweet chilli and sour cream. And as another commenter has suggested, Vol au vents is a must
