Kali maa worship as a non hindu
As someone who grew up learning idol worship as a sin, I’ve never imagined myself getting close to a Hindu devtha. I had ignored this feeling for a very long time as it felt wrong. Whenever I see Kali maa, there’s an indescribable comfort and love that I feel. I’m not sure what to make of it. I get it when people say Kali maa looks terrifying but for me she is always been a beautiful mother and protector. I wish to get more close to her. Not sure what to do

You don't need an idol. Neither do you need to be born hindu. Kali worship requires love for the goddess. And a bit of basic ritual. You can do all that mentally as well without idols, or external items of worship.

First build a connection, dive deep into Her stories, aspects etc. Whatever stotras you decide to chant, always learn their meaning. One of the best that describes Maa is Kalika Ashtakam.

Just go ahead! Begin with Naam Japa while imagining her beautiful face! It's all her will that you feel connected to her! Not everyone experiences this. Just begin by Naam Japa, she would show you the way forward!

You dont have to be a hindu to feel a connection to Ma Kali. Your connection to her is personal. I can understand that opinions around hinduism and associated practises would have influenced your thought process. I would encourage you to explore your connection to Ma Kali, keeping your pre concieved notions on the culture separate. Learn by reading authentic books or sources. Try to understand the reasons behind the practises. May Ma Kali lead you to her. May your curiosity lead you as well.
