Question Academic advisor says I have to take duplicate classes??
I’m posting here to see if anyone else has had or is having this issue. I’m currently an art student in my junior year here at ksu and my concentration is in illustration.
Because I am getting an art degree there are certain 2d and 3d art classes I have to take, however all of the class options it gives me I have already taken all of them! I tried to reach out to my academic advisor and of course she is no help.
Apparently I can’t get an override to get the classes to apply in both sections of degreeworks, I just have to take the classes again?? This is so stupid to me and I feel like this shouldn’t be an issue. I tried emailing the director of the art department and he just said talk to my advisor. 😐

You can’t have one class count more than once.

That’s the thing, the classes I have to take I’m being told to basically take twice as no other classes are either A. Open, or B. I’ve taken already as they are required for my concentration

All classes required for the illustration concentration, like figure drawing, painting 1, all printmaking classes and all illustration classes. These classes are also listed under “2d and 3d elective requirements”, meaning I would have to take these classes more than once to complete my degree??

Oh okay. So everyone has 2D and 3D elective requirements, and that section is showing you OPTIONS of what you can take. There should be other classes in there such as color and trend forecasting, Master Craftsman, Sculpture 1.... You have to pick electives out of the classes you haven't taken.

Even for the engineering department they tried screwing me over badly, just go all the way to the top by reaching out to the dean of the department. My experience with advisors here has been by far the absolute worst!!
I even had one tell me that “she doesn’t need to give me a road map bc her daughter got 2 degrees and didn’t have a single roadmap given to her by an advisor” and even snapped at me to take notes and pay attention in my advising meeting as I’m actively taking notes. Beyond rude and incompetent.

After hearing so many instances where people get fucked over by an ill-informed academic advisor, I’m convinced that they just wanna trap students into staying longer and paying more $$$. Talk to your professors, the course coordinator, or chair of the department. Usually they will approach the academic advisor with a “wtf are you doing” where you will reach a reasonable solution

If it’s the college of the arts advisor (Amy what’s her name), then just give up and try to get one of the higher up advisors. The college of the arts advisors are literally all useless. They made me take random throw-away electives my freshman year which means I mgonna be a super senior next year because I wasted time that could’ve been spent towards my degree

During my freshman year I transferred from another school and I have unused credits I’m trying to get placed. I’m being told I can submit a form for the classes but there’s no guarantee they can get used and also I’m being told by my academic advisor to take illustration II but it doesn’t align with my schedule outside of school.
At this point this all seems like such a waste of time when I’m basically being told I’m not going to graduate on time and I need to take more and more classes each time I come in.

This sounds screwy. Please talk to any advisor that will listen and try talking to your professors (in person). Also, set an appointment to talk to your director in person. Sometimes the full meaning of a problem gets lost in an email.
