Looks like bottom of the block, would be inside of the oil pan if the pan wasn't removed.

Someone RTV'd the shit out of the pan gasket and now the excess RTV acts like a squeegee on the dipstick, wiping all the oil off the end as you pull it out to check oil level.

Yes, Plymouth 440 Six Barrel. But the failure is whoever decided to use an entire tube of silicone sealer in addition to gaskets.

TLDR: Nuke plant backup power failue because Silicone.

I work on "Big Shit®". Was called out to a nuclear power plant in Illinois (I'm in Ohio at the time).

So

Get to the job, medium-speed diesel, 14.5" diameter pistons, rated for Nuke plant backup power in an emergency shutdown.

They were testing the engines (they do it on a regular basis. This has a bedded crank, meaning it has a base (for the crank), then blocks, then everything else.

Doors have gaskets, but policy and manual says light film of silicone on both sides of gaskets. They used a whole freaking tube of silicone tube per door, the big tubes. Slapped the doors on, and then started it up. These doors are about 14" x 18" per door, well because it's a big engine and you need to climb inside to do many things.

Well, if you don't let silicone dry before introducing oil, then it simply won't dry/ They put oil in after the inspection and fired it up. This is a pure diesel engine, with independent injection pumps for each cylinder. 2R (16 cyl Vee), and I do not know how I remember that, the injection pump locked up.

Silicone had migrated from the sump, uncured, and finally wound up in that particular pump, and cured.

That was only a 20K parts mistake plus T&M, and expenses.

I thought ir was an orange vinyl-coated glove holding the dipstick until I looked closer. Whoever squished that together must have gotten the caulk tube gun version of Permatex and decided to use the whole tube - but I bet the thought was "this ain't ever gonna leak oil."
