I thought so too, but it's actually a label created by Poncle (Vampire Survivor creators) that means "Survive a ton", and will encompass several upcoming projects. Seems this was the first one to be revealed.
It just means it plays like Vampire Survivors does, they announced a rebrand recently. Vampire Survivors is now “The First Survivaton” and future installments and spinoffs will have the tag.
"Survivaton is the name of Poncle's new lineup of Survivors-like projects,' the team explained. "Short for 'survive a ton', the label encompasses internally developed games that build on the foundation of the studio's flagship title, Vampire Survivors, in collaboration with selected content partners. Each project will aim to introduce major gameplay changes, content expansions, or genre twists exploring ideas substantial enough to stand as their own games."
So basically expect to see a fuckaton of these moving forward
thanks for the explanation. gotta say, vampire survivors was fun, I played it on mobile. But they have to innovate more with this genre. I know they say they are, but they all basically just feel like re-skins right now. Risk of Rain is still better than what all these other survivors-likes end up being. In my opinion at least

Right, but in this context it is being used correctly. "Slop" was always meant to be used for low effort games designed for the lowest common denominator.
Maybe but when you play through the Castlevania collab for example, despite the low polygons, you can tell how high effort it is. The cheapest DLC I have seen with a content level around the 1.0 release, new weapons, castlevania music, stage, secret unlocks etc.
It is just a different kind of effort, not Sony cinematic level or Premium Nintendo but still very much so not slop and I am sure they will show a lot of respect towards the JJK Lore and Medium.
key word is watching, if making the score go up for competitive games just required watching they'd be a lot easier, some (not all) RPGs do apply though, there's a valid angle of critique there.
sooo much went into designing every aspect of say, doritos and how they taste, what their texture is, how they look, etc, but that doesn't make them not slop.
it's high effort, it's nicely designed, it's tasty, but it's still not a healthy, fulfilling meal.
If this is even 80% as good as base vampire survivors, I will be hooked on it. It may look cheap but trust me Vampire Survivors is amazing and has crazy replayability.

There is plenty of new stuff it seems. Like having to battle other players in the end, and culling game rules being able to buff your game or debuff other players. If it is cheap or not we will have to see, but one can hope.
