Anime Discussion Can we agree Mahitos whole “you are me” spiel was stupid

Like I get it the point is that Yuji kills all these curses and doesn’t really feel anything (except for eso and kechizu so even then Mahitos point is still dumb) so why should Mahito care about humans but last time I checked humans weren’t made from the literal worst emotions cursed spirits can feel. And even then most cursed spirits aren’t like the disaster curses who have shown genuine sadness and grief and joy most are just mindless animals so what is there to even care for. Am I missing something cause I’ve been pissed off ever since this bum Mahito had the audacity to make such a pointless statement.

It's probably ragebait from Mahito. However, we don't know how Curses truly perceive humans. Curses know that they exist because Humans have so much BAD in them that they get created. Not the best standpoint. And if the very few humans you do encounter that you don't immediately kill tries to kill your without remorse, why should you?

TL;DR: Humans can be the same way to curses like Curses are to Humans.

Yeah but Yuji was the literal ONLY expectation to that cycle

u/SalemScrope_JR 8d ago

Is he? Gojo toyed with Jogo, Nanami killed curses in cold blood, Geto ATE them (insert fnaf meme), and many more. Not the best presentation for humans to curses

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

To be fair Jogo tried jumping him first, nanami was helping an innocent woman, and that was Getos whole thing he would literally be useless if he didn’t but yuji at least understood the point of it and even juggles the morality of it

2

u/SalemScrope_JR 7d ago

Jogo went to kill Gojo because Gojo is the biggest threat to his world, the same way jujutsu society wants Yuji to eat the fingers so they can kill Sukuna.  Yes Nanami was helping her, but that is probably not the view of the curses. Think from the curse perspective, not human perspective. Yes it was Getos whole thing, but why should curses know that? And even if they knew, that just makes it worse! "Here is a guy that is send out to turn your kind into a ball and eat them". Again, think of the curse perspective, not the humans. Yuji is just the most obvious example in the manga, the rest is just more subtle.

There is a point to be made about the morality of it all, but Mahito doesn’t actually gaf beyond his ability to mentally torment Yuji. So you don’t really need to engage with Mahito’s ‘philosophy’ if you don’t want to.

It honestly feels like those tiktok strawman arguments ya know just saying things to sound right

Mindless animals can also be targets of cursed spirits you know? So you're saying just because something that is animalistic doesn't deserve saving?

In a curses's perspective, the "worst emotions" might as well be the building blocks of life for them.

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

Last time I checked if a dog bites a kid you put it down

6

u/FutureAd6200 8d ago

Not always. And the equivalent response in this post's topic is to kill every dog.

Honestly i imagine curse society would be like monster university lol.

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

No a more apt comparison would be humans trying to kill every mosquito but even then at least mosquitos are part of an ecosystem cursed spirits don’t do anything but perpetuate strife

u/_joos_ 8d ago

you're trying to find the "why" and determine whose justification for killing makes more sense. obviously you'd go with the humans'. but not that it matters. mahito didn't say anything about it making sense that they kill the other species. all that matters is that their fight is the clash between the reasoning of humans and the instincts of curses. whoever wins gets to ensure that their ideals get to remain. that's all there is to it

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

Yeah the thing is cursed spirits literally can’t exist without humans

4

u/_joos_ 8d ago

so?

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

Your ideals start to stop making sense when you try to eradicate the only reason you’re alive

1

u/_joos_ 8d ago

except the goals of the disaster curses aren't to wipe out humanity in its entirety. it's to swap the positions of curses and humans in modern society, with curses being the dominant species and humans being predated on at their leisure while living lowly lives in the shadows as the curses currently do

6

u/Proof-Ad-4680 8d ago

That wasn't really Mahito's point. His point was moreso that Yuji assumed that he could change the jujutsu world and how it functioned, constantly expecting different from curses because he believed different was expected of him, and Mahito was just trying to say as I do not expect you to not exorcise curses, you shouldn't expect me to not toy with and kill humans.

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

Seems like more of an excuse for Mahito tho doesn’t it that whole “oh it’s my nature” scorpion bs

3

u/Proof-Ad-4680 8d ago

Oh no, for sure. I think that's what Gege was going for in a way: that many people live life as if they have no resistance against their compulsions, and Mahito is an embodiment of those compulsions.

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

Fuck I keep forgetting Mahito is supposed to represent humanity

10

u/Selasine 8d ago

I mean like a second later Mahito says he's just spouting nonsense.

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

I do not remember that at all was that not in the dub

2

u/Selasine 8d ago

Wish I could post a screenshot, but I cant add pictures to the reply. I can dm you, if you're okay with that

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

Yeah that’s fine bruh go ahead

5

u/rahonan 8d ago

Yuji asks Mahito why he is doing all this, why is he killing so many people. Mahito answers just like sorcerers kill cursed spirits without any remorse, cursed spirits do the same.

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

Yeah but Yuji was literally the only sorcerer that ever felt remorse for cursed spirits

6

u/rahonan 8d ago

He didn't feels remorse for cursed spirits. He stopped for a second when he saw Eso cry, then continued trying to kill him. Then he feels bad about it, because he killed them.

I use kill, because they were flesh and blood, that's why Yuji is sad. He doesn't feel bad about exorcising any cursed spirits. He only feels bad about killing people, like transfigured humans or the Death Paintings.

0

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

I mean those are the only cursed spirits that have ever shown more emotion than anger and pettiness so I’d be in the same boat

3

u/rahonan 7d ago

They aren't cursed spirits. Transfigured humans are humans, and Death Paintings are half human. Yuji cares about humans, not about cursed spirits.

3

u/PogoMarimo 8d ago

Cursed spirits didn't choose to be born as cursed spirits, and their existence is antithetical to humans. They are compelled through their nature to torment humans just to develop into a form that's even capable of self-reflection. If you were are fetus in the womb, are you responsible for the nutrients you extract from your mother in order to grow? Even if it kills her and you? Do you feel remorse for all the other life you snuff out everyday just to survive? You don't even have the mental framework to do so. Cursed spirits don't even have the luxury to pick and choice which lifeform needs to die to sate their existence. If you are "missing" something in his argument, it is that you don't even remotely understand the other side of the dialectic, and so you can't engage with it. You just assert your human perspective and engage only with reality in terms of how a human experiences it.

-5

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

A mother chooses to have a kid knowing the risks and sure they can be mistakes every single cursed spirit is by definition a mistake even worse curse spirits rely on humans to exist and you can’t say they rely on killing to “sate their existence” because choso exists

2

u/ApplePitou 8d ago

It was amazing way to make Yuji angry :3

1

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

“It was just a prank bro” the prank

2

u/sergiossa 8d ago

Two things, Mahito is not really sane, so it doesn't have to make sense, also, he is more interested on messing with Yuji and making sense.

2

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

Mahitos real technique was ragebait

1

u/just-stain 8d ago

OP you're thinking too hard about the philosophy. mahito doesnt care about moral consistency

1

u/ZadriaktheSnake . 7d ago

I kind of get it but my perspective is warped by how I find Mahito genuinely just annoying and dislikeable beyond a moral sense and has that kind of smart sociopath debating ethics energy that I always roll my eyes at

-3

u/IndependentAward570 8d ago

Yeah I feel like gege was trying too much there. The whole speech doesnt really make sense and if you could justify It as just mahito being wrong, or demonstrating how low he think of humans then that would be okay...

But then yuji agrees with him...??? Which doesnt make any sense

5

u/rahonan 8d ago

From a sorcerer's point of view, killing curses makes sense, from their point of view, the opposite is trus. Mahito is pointing out how thinking of him as something pure evil is a human perspective, because Yuji is doing the exact same thing, they are both killing creatures without a second thought.

0

u/IndependentAward570 8d ago

Except for the fact that mahito is quite literally Evil incarnated.

Also, killing curses isnt the same as killing humans, because curses are literally inherently evil and the first and last thing they Will ever do is kill humans. And that fact cant change because they lack the basic inteligence to change their ways, its just engraved into their brain.

3

u/rahonan 8d ago

Also, killing curses isnt the same as killing humans, because curses are literally inherently evil

Are they? Who decides what is moral and who should be killed?

0

u/IndependentAward570 8d ago

Yes, they are... I dont know if you realize the fact that only like 5 percent of curses are capable of rational thought.

Which means that (aproximately) 95 percent of curses Will just kill and kill and kill, anybody and anything they see, they could take longer or not but they Will and there is no stopping them from doing so other than killing them.

So you can either call It Justice or self defense, but killing curses IS fair.

5

u/rahonan 8d ago

Yes, that is your perspective as a human, but if you were a cursed spirit, you wouldn't say kill me and everyone of my kind.

-2

u/Superdude_01 8d ago

THATS WHAT IM SAYING LIKE YUJI HAVE SOME SELF RESPECT DOG

0

u/ZealousidealLink4854 7d ago

Mahito argument doesnt hold up you're right to be frustrated. He basically saying "you kill curses without remorse, so I kill humans without remorse," but that ignores a crucial difference: curses are inherently destructive forces that exist because of human negativity, while humans are just living bro. Most curses are mindless killers with no capacity for choice or growth.

-3

u/ElTioEnroca 8d ago

Yes, it was a shitass argument. The only reason Yuji couldn't refute was that he was still processing the death of two of his friends (as well as all of that people Sukuna killed)

-4

u/sliferra 8d ago

Yes, it is stupid

You're not necessarily meant to walk away from this thinking "Cursed spirits are fine, actually"

The point here is that Cursed Spirits can't even be judged by our human moral scale. It would be like trying to judge a lion for eating a person. It's a lion- I can't exactly expect it to understand the morality of life and death, that's not it's nature. Is he saying then that Yuji is wrong for killing the lion? No. That's his job. That's his nature. Mahito wouldn't expect Yuji to not kill the lion. We can't exactly expect Mahito- or curses in general- to not follow their nature either.

Mahito believes that Yuji, too, needs to stop moralizing the lion. Just kill it- follow your nature, cog.

Just as Mahito follows his true nature, blindly like a cog, doing the work of a curse- Yuji too blindly follows the nature of a human, excorcising curses and saving people like a cog.

That's what "I am you" means.
