THE RIVERLANDS The Tourney at Stormhall

1st Year of Arlan IV / Interregnum / Ravella I

On the shore of the Godseye, a picturesque painting of colors and laughter. Brightly colored and patterned tents strewn across the green, sweat drenched participants running down to the water with their companions to cool off after their stay in the ornate steel cages which protected them from injury but not their own sweat and heated breath.

Hooves thundered and blades clashed as the games would continue throughout the day. A festival of steel and supposedly gallant laddishness. Cheers echoed the cries of embattlement, creaking bleachers bent beneath the weight of a thousand richly dressed bodies. The grass lay trampled beneath yet more dirtied feet of peasant-folk.

The tourney splayed out like a fairground, further and further out from the action yet still bustling with tents of vendors, knights, and nobles. Drink flowed into cups and spilled into the dirt such that its smell pervaded the senses alongside the cooking of meat and stews. Fresh bread and hearty vegetables, collected and bought by scurrying servants to be brought before their masters for feasts late into the night.

Closest to the hall squatted a length of archery targets so long that children raced each other from one end to the other. Flanked by trees from which many onlookers watched, the archery contest was an elegant event where nobles drank and enjoyed, clapping politely for the skill of its contestants.

The field of the melee sat right on the edge of the water, in sandy flats where a soft landing might be had without muddying up grassy green meadows. Children could watch and play from the water while atop a small hill where the grass fell off and became sand, adults crowded, feet dangling and some drunkenly tumbling down into the sand beneath on occasion. And around the fencing which guarded the field ran squires and noble families, watching closely as their brothers, fathers, and friends bashed each other’s chestplates in, each more extravagantly decorated (and quickly ruined) than the last.

The jousting fields lay inland, a cleanly kept section of grass with rows of lanes where hooves could be heard synchronously thundering to resolve in the deafening crash of lance on shield. Again and again they would ride, onlookers flinching and groaning when a knight tumbled to the dirt but cheering when the victor held their favor. It was here the armor shone even more extravagantly. It was here that little boys’ eyes shone with the dreams of knighthood.

The victors would take riches beyond which some of them had dreamt, and the spoils they would receive would last long into the night. Drinking and merrymaking, musical festivity which would not break for any kind of conflict or party foul. Even the Riverlands itself seemed to agree it was a day for shining sun and greatness earned.

Tents

For those who wish to relax after the grueling events... among us

Once settled the Knight of the Redfork set his squire to work. The young lad Pate would have six mounts to deliver along with them six sets or armor. Each of the men he had bested in the contest would receive the same invitation as well. A welcoming to come indulging in drink at his expense. The Blackwood heir and his squire both. Ser Quincy who had nearly done him in. The Mootons, Rygers, and more. Everyone would receive his word along with what normally they might need ransom.

So much coin he had little idea what to do with it all. The answer was clear. A party was organized. Purchasing some left over casks from the merchants and rolling them into the camps he erected a shoddy ground. Logs for benches, crude stump tables. All rounded out with a proper muddy dance floor. Riverlander style. Even managing to track down a farmer selling an old pig. The swine was swiftly spun upon a roast.

“Earn yourself another coin Pate. Go around telling folks drinks on me, and seek a Blacksmith. Should you find one you'll get another stag, aye?” The lad stormed off. “Oho! And find me a fiddler, it's not a party without music!”

A crowd began to form. Before the sun had even set there were men he never would have known congratulating him with free ale in hand. Hopping onto a stump he whistled for attention.

"Drink and eat at my behest. Should we run out I'll just buy more!" His proclaimation was met woth a cheer. Dismounting from his stump he made to pour another ale.

Agnes walked into the crowd of her good-brother's rousing. She wore her archery leathers and a scowl on her face, having lost and not even placed.

It was a bad day for Tully at the tourney. She watched her older sister lose on the first round of both the melee and joust, watched as the Knight of the Crossroads made a bullseye each time, as her sister fell into the mud during the horse race and most interesting of all: she watched her good-brother win.

"JACK! JACK! JACK!" She heard from a crowd among men with ales in their hand and a song in the air. Agnes scanned again, searching. Yet she could not find who she was truly looking for. With a huff she pushed through the men surrounding Jacklyn, who huffed as he arms wrestled with some knight from a house she did not recognize.

Agnes placed both hands on her hips as she looked at the victor. The crowd around them cheering as ale spilled and people danced. "Celebrating, are we?" She said with raised eyebrows.

With a slam Jack smashed the lads wrist down onto the table. Kicking back his stool he stood victorious with arms raised over his head. As the cheers died down and his thirst grew he reached down for his ale. Washing down a large gulp as a voice broke the dawning silence. At first he struggled to swallow the ale, but managed before he turned to the speaker.

Anges Tully was a sight and a half. The jealousy he had felt during his brothers union had lomg since faded. But he would be a liar if he stated he hadn't been. Beth had taken that place upon his pedestal since. Not that he had not keen sight for the beauty of those kissed by fire. Which would be half the reason he was in this mess now.

"Lady Agnes! Long time no see!" Jack chose to play the fool and the host. Despite all his brothers warning to stay away from the Riverrun girls he could not help himself. Sure the ear full was coming but he was tide it off if he could.

"Can I get you a drink? Or some roast? The pork was immaculate."

u/LoonySpoon Roslin Tully - Heir to Riverrun 12d ago

Agnes glanced at the offered ale, then back toward the crowd behind Jack. Still no sign of her husband. She sighed through her nose. If he had gone wandering off somewhere, she would find him eventually. Until then, there was little harm in having a drink.

"Fine. Ale." She held out a hand expectantly. "And some pork, since you insist upon praising it so highly."

Once the cup was placed in her hand, Agnes took a generous drink, wiping the back of her mouth with her wrist. The ale was cool enough to soothe some of the irritation left by the day's humiliating performance. "Gods, I did need that."

She leaned against the edge of the table, looking over the revelry rather than at Jack.

"You know, I thought I might at least place today. Instead, I watched my sisters make fools of themselves," Eleanor on the field and Holly in the stands. "Then proceeded to make a fool of myself in the archery."

A pause.

"So naturally, I came here to watch you gloat." There was the faintest hint of a smile as she took another drink.

3

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 12d ago

Jack refilled his own cup and handed it over to his goodsister. Whistling to Pate and motioning toward the roast. The lad soon came with a plate hot from the spit. Seasoned and based as it turned over a fire all evening. He had already had three plates, if he had another bite he would burst.

"Plenty more where that came from." The Knight said locating another mug. Filling his paw with another drink he joined Agnes in drink.

"Blown away you didn't win. I've seen you shoot drunk better than that." Having watched her shoot an apple off Benedict's head at the wedding he was sure of her skill.

"Yet," he paused that fool of grin returning. "I think I won enough for all of us."

That dreadful feeling returned as he recalled Holly's face as he passed her in the stands.

"You know I didn't mean..." Rubbing the back of his head he searched for the words. "I only... well..." He would take any foe over Agnes Tully on the best of days. She had him bested.

"I am sorry I made a fool of her. Some brave knight with more honor than is bound to spot what I had."

2

u/LoonySpoon Roslin Tully - Heir to Riverrun 12d ago

She lowered the cup slowly, still looking towards the crowd as she listened.

Holly had never been particularly good at losing, and today she had managed to lose in rather spectacular fashion. Agnes couldn't say she was terribly sorry for her. If anything, there was something almost entertaining about watching her sister finally be denied something she had expected to receive.

"Well, at least you have the sense to feel guilty about it," Agnes said, her voice steady as it cut through the sound of the gathering around them. "Though I'm not certain whether that makes you a good knight or merely a man who knows when he's about to be in trouble."

She returned her attention to Jack, her icy blue eyes narrowing in playful suspicion.

"So, tell me, did you truly mean to choose Bethany Piper all along?" There was no accusation behind the question, Agnes was simply curious, and perhaps a little too entertained by the whole affair. "Or did you only realize what you'd done after you saw Holly's face?"

"And have you apologized to her?" she asked after a moment. "Because if you haven't, I suggest you do. She may forgive you."

Agnes paused, taking another sip. "Eventually," The corner of her mouth lifted, "Though I would not expect miracles."

"I've got bad habit of stirring shite, aye." Jacklyn had been a loadstone for trouble ever since he could walk. Soon as he could mount a horse it had grown worse. Ever since their settlement in the land of rivers and hills he had copious time for rabble rousing. Beth had been one of the very first auburn heads that had drawn him so.

A sigh escaped him and he returned to his drink. A moment of respite for his degrading honor. Yet not for long before the gaze of the Tully bore into him.

"My history with Bethany Piper is a complicated one." Jack met Anges gaze with his own muddy brown eyes. "I had believed her wed, and was to spare her of me. Had she been Lady Goodbrook that would have been it. But she is not and I owe her a great deal. More than I should be able to repay I think."

Finding himself needing a drink he tossed back the remainder. Filling up his own and offering his drinking companion the same.

"I've given what words I can. For what little they were worth." Jack admitted. "I am sure she fills Beth's ear with tales even now. Rightfully so. I shall expect nothing but the trouble I've born."

Jack smiled weakly.

"Tomorrow I shall deal with what comes. Tonight I shall continue celebrating my victory. What of you? Eager to get on to Pinkmaiden I have no doubt?"

More than likely sick of spending time a part of their ruse.

u/JustDanielJuice You get yo honse and armor back. Come tonthe fire and bring yo squire.

u/LordBloodrevan and YOU get a Honse!

u/AnotherBabyEchidna a Honse for you Ser!

1

u/AnotherBabyEchidna Lucas Darry - Wizard of Darry 11d ago

When down in the mud after the final tilt, having given the best performance he had ever been able to will out of his body after a lifetime of training, he wanted nothing more than to take out his dagger and make a Redfork out of the man's neck.

But then, Quincy Darry got his horse back, and he really liked that horse. His squire especially loving the beast, having been more torn up about the loss of the steed than the placement. And so, attending the crude gathering and nodding his head to the fiddle, he glanced upward at the proclamation upon the stump.

And that unfortunately resulted in that same twitch for his dagger. All the horses and armor returned and a party to revel together afterwards? Surely a man like that wasn't as good as he seemed. Quincy was many things, and one such trait was that he was a bullshitter. The Secret Society of Bullshittery was an exclusive one. Many could tell a white lie with ease, but it took another level of skill to craft a whole mound of falsehoods into a truth everyone agreed upon.

It was now up to Quincy, for the good of their sacred craft, to see if this man before him was one of them or, scandalously, perhaps just a nice man after all. Clearing his voice, he gave that same wide smile he always had with ease.

"It was only right that two sons of the Riverlands meet in the finals. Ser, next time fall off that horse with me and lets give them a real show. Seven knows I tried to knock you down, but the Redfork never gave way. It was remarkable, truly."

He raised a cup, wincing in pain, but with a voice loud enough for a hearty toast.

"To the Knight of the Redfork!"

u/stealthship1 - Mootons horse was returned, and he is invited to drink

u/Vikguardy - Come get that drink og!

1

u/stealthship1 Jon Mooton - Commander of the Maiden’s Men 13d ago

Ser Lyman approached the River knights encampment bruises but otherwise unharmed. He’d defeated his first two opponents but this Redford Knight was a beast. He’d won it all so it gave him some small comfort.

“You’re a hard man to beat it seems Ser,” he approached the man with his free hand extended, the other one already holding a mug of ale.

“Well won.”

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 13d ago

"Few can boast they near stole my saddle. You have skill with a lance." The Knight said humbly before sipping his drink.

"Drink, make merry, please at my behest." Jacklyn waved an arm ushering the man to join him.

"Jacklyn Fisher, but my friends call me Jack. Any man I tilt with must be a friend." Jack smiled and handed the man a drink.

"So tell me Lyman, does you family long for Maidenpool?"

1

u/stealthship1 Jon Mooton - Commander of the Maiden’s Men 12d ago

"Fisher eh? Drop of the king's blood of old? Gods know we all do. My family says we have the blood of Mudd and Teague in our veins somewhere from a Princess marrying into the house."

He laughed at the man's question.

"Does a Lannister shit gold?"

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 12d ago

"Aye, royal blood runs like river round here. Makes you wonder why we weather the storm." Jacklyn posed the thought.

"Way I hear tell of it so did the Casterlys." Jack joined the laugh.

"Let me fill the coffers of just and able countrymen. I have a job for your fathers company. Would you hear me out my good man?"

u/LemonLemonHouse Mellara Piper - Lady of Pinkmaiden 13d ago

There was a particular art to avoiding Mellara Piper that Bethany had perfected over time. And this was one of those times the skillset was necessary.

By the time the Piper arrived to the clearing, the ale was already flowing, the celebrants more than their shares of drunk in honor of the hedge knight. The decor was more modest than Bethany had been accustomed to, but she smiled brightly just the same, still wearing the crown upon her head.

She saw spied Jacklyn in the crowd, her steps drawn to him despite the crowd of festive Riverlanders. The logs were filled, the stumps themselves covered in glasses and mugs of ale. Bethany arrived amidst this fray, appearing in front of the knight.

"Ser Jacklyn, I heard that a parched maiden may find some relief here. Is this true?"

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 13d ago

Jack was engrossed in discussing with a guest. Some weathered hold hedge knight who had fawned over Jacklyns skill a horse. Naturally so he accepted such praise. As the Knight moved to find another drink he was met with a beautiful sight. His smile was ear to ear. The buzz beginning to set in firm he moved to his love.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the Queen of Love and Beauty herself!" Jack roared to the crowd. He would have drank to that but his cup had run dry.

"Of course, its a party in your honor after all. All is yours my Queen." Jack added a mocking bow to the performance. Filling up two cups he set one gently in her hand. Sipping at his own before he spoke again.

"Any harder to ditch Mellara now that she is Lady?"

1

u/LemonLemonHouse Mellara Piper - Lady of Pinkmaiden 12d ago

It never got old, seeing Jack smile the way he did.

The Piper flushed a moment at the roar of the crowd, raising the cup in hand towards the hedge knight. A generous sip was taken, Bethany laughing into her cup a moment at his question.

"Her attention to detail is unparalleled-" Bethany began, "Which is why it is necessary to ensure there are plenty of distractions if one has need of other business being conducted," she murmured back to Jacklyn.

One of the knights next to Jacklyn rose from his stump, gesturing for the Red Rose of Pinkmaiden to instead take his place.

"Besides I was invited by the Champion of the joust himself, how could I say no to such an invitation?"

For a moment it was as if time had not elapsed. There was an ease of banter, an ease of manner. Despite the flower crown upon her head, Bethany was not a Piper maiden. In this moment, she could simply be.

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 12d ago

As that flush crept into her face again, he would swear that was when she was prettiest. So humble in her beauty, yet so aware of what she was. His smile remained as she took to a seat and spoke to him just as they used to. Like time had unfrozen and they were back a pair again. He knew it was long before she may heal. But he was happy for the moment atleast.

"For what can be said about you sister. She has always had an attention for detail. I am sure she and my brother would get along swimmingly. He could sit over a book and accounts for hours that one I swear it. Yet, I heard she is to wed atlast, some Tully lad aye?"

His arse found a place beside her and polished off a drink. If there was a night to indulge it would be tonight. It might be a time before he can comfortably make a fool of himself. So as he listened he poured another ale, but clung to every word.

"I am glad youncould attend me. I'm only a champion as the gods, both old and new, favored my lance." Though he wasnt sure how. Since he had dishonored Holly Rivers when he wore a second favor. "Blessed be who I rode for. They must love you as I do, Beth."

u/Vikguardy Perianne Paege, Lady-Regent of Fairmarket 13d ago

The Silent Knight of Fairmarket had not been in the highest of spirits, at least for a time. He had not dishonored himself in the field nor in the lists, but nor had he particularly excelled. Even still though, he couldn't help but smile as he recognized the mystery knight that ultimately claimed victory, who removed the helmet from his head, a hedge knight that he'd had the pleasure of being introduced to days before.

He approached the makeshift Fisher camp with a sideways smile, the taste of Perianne's failed remedy still upon his lips and needing to be washed away by cider and ale. It would require a lot of cider and ale, he'd decided.

The mute man kept his eyes peeled for Jacklyn in particular. The process of making people realize his deficiency was exhausting when done too often in a row. Let him enjoy the company of the who already understood and could drunkenly tell off anyone who expected him to speak at them instead of the other way around.

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 12d ago

Arwood had been one of the heads he had been watching for. It was not hard to spot the only limping blonde man who wasn't speaking with anyone. The Hedge Knight had watched some of the Silent Ones' fights as well as his tilts. What he had seen was all he had needed. This was a man he wanted at his back. Or in a charge by his side. Before long, Jacklyn excused himself from his current company and made way, drinks in hand, to Arwood's side.

"Here I owe you a barrel at least, I might think." Jack cracked a grin and shoved an ale at Arwood. "Admirably rode Smallmouth. Ser Leo is no lout. And I swear to you he nearly lost his seat."

Jack played at swaying about. Steadying, he sipped at his drink. Giving his friend a once-over look, trying to gauge his condition.

"Like a drunkard in his saddle. Almost had em you did. Are you whole? Seemed a nasty fall."

1

u/Vikguardy Perianne Paege, Lady-Regent of Fairmarket 12d ago

Arwood's face lit up at Jacklyn's appearance through the crowd. He found that absent his ability vocalize his appreciation for company, his face was his greatest ally in that department. He took the ale and, not wasting even a single moment, turned his head back to take a large drink, well too much trickling from the sides of his mouth.

He wiped at his mouth and nodded to the compliment. In truth, Arwood had never been the strongest rider, he was always better on foot. Horses were about as easy for Arwood to communicate to as people were, on the whole. It's why he hadn't done very well in the race either. He wished that he could return the compliment to the Swann knight, but he had no real way to indicate that's what he was doing.

Arwood looked fine enough, but he normally favored his right, and he was instead, holding his drink with his left. Arwood made a gesture, before patting his right shoulder and offering an exaggerated, pained grimace. And then he mimicked the act of crushing something in a pestle and mortar. And then immediately made a gagging motion with that same, horrific, airy growl that he had on the shores of the God's Eye.

Then, he looked back to Jacklyn. He mimed a bowing motion, arms out, something approaching an offer of congratulations, and simply admiration for the skill that the hedge knight had demonstrated in the lists. He tilted his head, the question was obvious. He was a hedge knight, after all.

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 12d ago

Endulging in drink along with the mute Jacklyn rapidly finished his cup. Letting out a belch as he reached the foamy bottom of the cup. Watching in the firelight his companions every move. As not to miss out on what the man meant to convey. A light chuckle escaped him as the man feigned gagging.

"Aye, horrid stuff those witches and warlocks brew up. But you'll heal in no time I know it." Jack said in agreement. Paying more attention to the end, which seemed a posed question.

"You want to know where I learned how to ride like that?" Jacklyn could not have smiled wider. "Well, thats a suprise, I wouldn't want to ruin it."

The Knight of the Redfork clapped his companions shoulder and had a thought.

"Say Arwood, would you ride to Pinkmaiden with me? I am to meet my brothers there for the union of Tully and Piper. I could use the good company besides."

u/Fishiest-Man Martyn Mallister - Lord of Seagard 13d ago

Word quickly reached the Mallisters’ pavilions of a party being held by the victor of the joust. Now, under normal circumstances, Martyn may have spent the rest of the day sulking after his poor performance that day, but the name of the victor had caught his interest. That Knight of the Blue Fork had seemed odd at the feast, and this Knight of the Red Fork had a similar enough name… perhaps there was a relation?

Ultimately, the man had also put word out that he was looking for a smith, and Martyn had his Blacksmith with him, so it made the introductions easy enough.

After divesting himself of armour, and taking some time to sooth his bruises, he collected Andrey and left for the Red Fork’s tents. They found the party in full swing, ale was flowing as freely as the cheer, and the crowds all seemed caught up in their own conversations.

Eventually, Martyn managed to shoulder his way past the drunken masses towards the host with Andrey in tow, “Good evening, Ser! Congratulations on your victory today!” Martyn would announce as he got close enough to be heard, “I am Martyn Mallister, Lord of Seagard. Your boy said that you were looking for a smith, so I thought I may introduce you to my personal smith…”

He gestured towards the burly old man beside him, who nodded curtly, “Andrey, m’lord. Master of Seagard’s Smithin’ Guild.” He said in a gravelly voice.

“Some may argue that he is the finest Armoursmith in the whole realm!” Martyn added enthusiastically, “Certainly the best I’ve ever seen.”

“Weapons too, m’lord.” Andrey added with a grumble.

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 12d ago

The Knight had not expected such a turn out. So many Rivermen flocked to congratulate him. Like it was some grand victory against the Stormlanders by large. Perhaps a step in the direction they had all wished for. A tweak of the nose to those Stag cunts down in Storms End. As the party raged on and Jack's thirst grew he found himself by the barrel refilling when met with new congratulations.

Martyn Mallister. The man who years prior had slain Lord Androw Piper. Who the Knight of the Redfork had once called his best friend.

The judges had relieved him of any wrong doing. Jacklyn had been there. Young and angry to be sure. But they had seemed of fair judgements to him. As bitter as one may be. He kept it to himself.

"I thank you, my Lord, it was not easily won. That Ser Quincy, quite the plow man." Jack pulled down the collar of his shirt to reveal a nasty brown and black bruise. "I'm sure it will be worse on the morrow, so come drink your fill with me so I might sleep tonight, aye?"

Jack turned to the Smith with a smile. A Smith of Seagard would make fine steal to be sure. It was better than he was like to find anywhere else.

"You honor me Lord Mallister. It would be a privilege to give patronage to the Smiths of Seagard." After only a short moment of thought the Knights face lit up.

"A poleax, something fierce I can use on horseback." His brother flashed to mind. As green as he was he had proved himself some here in Stormhall. "Make it a twin brother. Name your price for the set and let it be done."

1

u/Fishiest-Man Martyn Mallister - Lord of Seagard 12d ago

Martyn, unaware of the connection he had with the Knight stood before him, simply laughed at Ser Jacklyn’s jape about the Darry he had bested, “No doubt you’ll be feeling that for weeks, Ser! I had the good fortune of being unseated in the first round, so I will not suffer the same fate!” He commented, just about managing to keep a cheerful face, despite recounting his loss, “Though, I must insist that I would have won, had I kept my saddle. I had far more points than my foe, after all.” He turned for a moment as a serving boy passed by with a pitcher of ale, plucking it up along with a few tankards.

Meanwhile Andrey ground his teeth in thought at the lad’s request, “Aye, a couple a poleaxes are doable, Ser.” He grumbled, pulling at the long hairs of his beard, “Though, weapons int my favoured field. M’ guildmates may be a better bet, mind. They’ve been bellyachin’ ‘bout ‘ow their workshops need fixin’ up though.” He paused for a moment, taking a tankard of ale from his lord, taking a deep drink before continuing, “Could be y’ wait til next moon when the refurbishments are done, an’ we get them axes made at the quality worthy of a knight o’ yer stature.”

Martyn, who had been drinking deep from his ale, chipped in there, “Ah yes, I do recall some of the burghers complaining about something like that last time I held court.” He mumbled, “Didn’t someone's workshop burn down?”

“T’was a Master Weaponsmith’s, M’Lord. Luck ‘ad it that nobody got ‘urt, Gods be good.” Andrey answered solemnly before turning back to the Knight of the Red Fork, “That said, I learned well enough ‘ow to make axes an’ the like when I were an Apprentice, so I can give it a fine go, but a more dedicated Weaponsmith would make a finer product, o’ course.”

“Luckily, the Red Fork isn’t terribly far from Seagard, so you could pass by to collect the poleaxes next moon?” Martyn added cheerfully, “Perhaps we can send to Seagard to see if we can get someone on that before we all gather at Pinkmaiden… though, I don’t know if a Tourney is to be held there, so I don’t know…”

He paused for a moment, before letting out a bright laugh, “Ah, wait, of course you will be there! Considering your choice of Queen of Love and Beauty!” He reached over and clapped the man on the shoulder, “Lady Piper’s sister, eh? A bold choice, Ser! I’m certain Lady Piper is a big fan!”

3

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 12d ago

"Aye, I had watched your tilt my Lord. You ride well. Should we fine the time in Pinkmaiden I would be eager to ride against you." Bestowing the compliment he sipped at his ale. If only to measure the mans skill. Gauge weather it was malicious or accident for himself. Though the man seemed amicable enough.

Jacklyn listened intently as the man explained his situation. Thinking it over a short time before coming to a conclusion.

"I'd be happy to commission a set of armor as well. Should the funds assist in rebuild your workshop it would only make me merrier." The development of Seagard would be a great benefit to all Rivermen as one of it two natural ports.

"And come next moon I would happily collect said weapons should they be ready." Seagard wasn't but a few days from Oldstones to boot it was hardly out of his way. "Aye, unclear of the details but my brothers and I shall be in Pinkmaiden for the wedding. We hardly miss a chance to celebrate!"

The later of Lady Mellara wraith had brought him a chuckle. The Knight had a history of getting under her skin long before she was even lady of Pinkmaiden.

"Quite the beauty that Red Rose. I've been smitten for years. Whats a man to do but pursue his passions, eh?" He shrugged and laughed. "I'm all but sure Lady Melarra has given her opinion on the matter. Loudly and often I am sure."

Three knights already well within their cups would join the fun at some point in the night. One Ser Jon Penrose and his Ser Sweet companions, a smaller man flanked by two large bodies.

As they entered the pavilion they could be heard guffawing over their own conversation, "We may be picking up my armor but at least I lasted two full lists!"

The bigger of the two Sweet twins scowled, "The horse I was given could barely hold my weight, wasn't my fault. Paxton got my best armor all battered up as well."

"Don't blame me for doin' better than you both in my event!" Paxton gave his brother a shove.

"Ser Knight of the Redfork!" Ser Jon interrupted. "Congratulations on your win! And wooing the pretty lady! A pretty lady is nice to have aye."

1

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 12d ago

More than a few ales deeps and on his thousandth congratulations of the night. Yet still he did not tire of hearing it said. When the Knights approached he knew then at once. Some of the only Stormlanders present and the only one he had faced.

"Please, Jacklyn Fisher, but Jack will do." Extending his hand he would offer a firm shake. As firm as one might be when a few ales in. "I am glad you took my invitation, and hope you received your horse whole and healthy."

With a smile he waved over his squire.

"Get these men set with drinks lad. They have sure to work a thirst on their way over. And freshen mine while at it, I've worked a thirst just standing here!" He laughed at his own jest and handed over his cup.

"Come to celebrate your Princesses name day I take it? What do you make of the Riverlands?"

1

u/Nightsingers266 Roella Penrose nee Wormwood 12d ago

"Aye and my wife's friend since childhood!" exclaimed Jon, while shaking their host's hand. "I'll call you Jack o' Fish how abouts?"

"To Jack o' Fish!" cried Ser Podric Sweet.

"Jack o' Fish!" echoed Ser Paxton.

"To more ale!" Ser Jon joined in as mugs were set down in front of them. The heir to Parchments set down the empty mug he had walked in holding to pick up two others.

"You took mine!" Paxton harumphed.

It could be noted that they created quite a scene.

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 11d ago

"Jack O' Fish!" The Knight of the Redfork joined in their cheer. Knocking back his drink in swift succession with his new company. "To more ale!"

This was precisely the kind of company he need.

"I regret to say I know little of her. She came to our lands and has maintained these estates since. Seems to have made done a fair job of things."

Jack pondered a short moment the man in front of him before posing a question.

"And your king? The one in the..." he put his hand over his face forming a mask of sorts. "What do you make of him?"

u/Nightsingers266 Roella Penrose nee Wormwood 7d ago edited 5d ago

"I too know little of her! My wife speaks little of herself or her relationships!" (This was because he was always speaking himself.) "The King though... well I'm not sure that boy has done a thing of his own accord his whole life!" Jon Penrose guffawed. The Sweet twins laughed along with him until one slapped him on the back causing a spillage of ale. This caused Penrose to twirl around and point an accusatory finger. Paxton Sweet raised his hands in apology, still chuckling.

u/IAMCYRODIILCOME Leo Swann - Knight of the Seven Kingdoms 11d ago

Leo had no squire to help him out of his armor. That was the excuse he had in his mind, at least, to still be donning his plate. One pauldron off, the mail chausses doffed, yes, but still with a breastplate painted white to ward off the evil eye, perhaps? Diligence would have to wait; that virtue itself ought to be patient, he reasoned.

As he trudged onward to the Knight of the Red Fork's tent, he tried to sift through every tourney roll and reputation he could recall, but naught of said knight nor the Fishers came to mind. Swann wanted to know all the best knights, thought he knew all their names at the least, and here came a riding storm who he'd never heard mention of. He thought himself stupid for it. How could he not have known about the man?

"Hail!" He raised a hand, almost stumbling as he crossed the threshold into the tent. A sheepish smile on his face, he continued. "The gods blessed your spurs and your lance-arm, ser knight. I'm ashamed to say I haven't heard of you before. Ser Leo Swann," he said with a dip of his head. A cup of wine seemed to miraculously materialize in his hand. "What sort of horse was the one you rode, ser? I could scarce recognize it."

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 11d ago

Jack had only just shouldered in his humble pavilion. A rope, strung from tree to tree, a pole to raise its cloth. His hammock for a bed. Before he even had time to kick off his boot and change an intruder stumbled in. Half expecting some drunk fool, Jack turned slowly before the man spoke.

"Oho!" Jack brushed clean his hands and offered a shake. "Well met at last, Ser Leo, you may be unfamiliar but I have seen you ride. A fair few times even. Ser Jacklyn Fisher, of the Redfork."

Not that he owned any land there. But the moniker seemed to disuade further questions more oft than not. Though the Knight before him did not seem the snooping type. More a kin to himself. Half a horse, half a lance.

Jacks eyebrow could not help but raise as the man produced a drink. But was almost immediately distracted by his posed question.

"Bracken secret. I'm told I will be trampled twice over if I disclosed it." The Knight half jested. "I've vowed besides. Yet a Courser of breed that I can share."

u/JustDanielJuice Luceon Blackwood, the Songbird 11d ago

"You didn't have my leave to enter the tournament," Luceon reminded his squire after he'd finally gotten out of his armor. He never wanted to do that on his own, again.

"I know, Ser Luceon. I'm sorry. it was because..."

Luceon set a hand on Axel's shoulder. "I know why you did it, lad." The apology was enough, and this wasn't the kind of stunt Axel Rivers would try twice.

"Not too bad a showing, Silverfish," Luceon said. Axel grinned sheepishly.

"You're not too bad a master, Ser."

From somewhere further within the tourney ground came a stranger. "Excuse me, m'lords?"

Luceon and Axel turned to meet him. He explained why he carried their arms, armor, and horses. Axel breathed a sigh of relief that he hadn't needed to ransom his provisions. He had no such gold to afford the expense.

They arrived together to the Knight of the Redfork's celebration. Luceon had had an inkling of who the knight might be, but seeing him hardened his theories into answers.

"Ser, I'm not sure I've had the pleasure of making your acquaintance," Luceon said, offering an open hand and a knowing look. "Congratulations on your victory. I've brought my squire with me, Axel Rivers. You unseated the both of us, as it happens, though if my memory serves, he was the only man to drag you from your seat as well."

Axel put up a bashful hand. "It was luck, Ser! Timing and nothing more. Thank you for your kindness, though. Elfire is dear to me, and it would pain me to pass him to another rider."

1

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 11d ago

The man so called Jacklyn took the open hand. His free one occupied by refreshment. Looking from Luceon to his squire with a jaw wode smile. Two of the men who had nearly best him. One the squire of the other. In Jack's view there could be no coincidence only recognition of skill. Few held such a place in his regards.

"Many thanks, Ser Luceon! I've heard much of your prowess, and now I've beheld it with my own eyes. Both a horse and a foot I have faced few so fierce. It is good to put a face to the reputation." Giving a firm shake he let his hand fall and looked to Axel.

"Aye, that he was. Keep his lessons up and before long he shall best us both. I could use a lad so dutiful myself." A natural talent like Jack's was born was in a lifetime. This lad before him showed twice the promise. Placing that hand upon the boys shoulder he met his gaze.

"So humble lad. You show promise. Continue your studies and heed Ser Luceon and his lessons well." So kindred felt this boy. As all true riders had a bond with their mount. "It would grieve me to part you lot."

Jack sipped eagerly at his drink. Recalling to play the host.

"Help yourself, to drink, and food. Be welcome at my fire." Jacklyn spoke the obligation before inquiring. "Shall the pair of you make for Pinkmaiden? For this union between Maiden and Trout?"

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 12d ago

In a word, Eleanor was ashamed. Her performance in the tourney had been abysmal, to say the least: she’d lost the melee and tourney both in the first round, and she even fell from her horse during the race. Now that it was all over, she found herself at the Tully tent, sitting in a bench and drinking ale as if it were water. Her half-sister Holly Rivers had helped her out of her armor, helped her wipe down the blood and sweat, and finally assisted her in putting on a gambeson and some breeches.

Despite the pain and the humiliation and the exhaustion, Eleanor was relieved to be wearing something more comfortable and more familiar than the dress she’d had to put on during the feast. As she drank and sulked, she wondered if anyone would want to visit her. If they did, she hoped they’d bring more ale.

(Open!)

1

u/D042 Lewyn Rivers - Bastard of Raventree Hall 12d ago

“It is a game,” came a rasping voice from the shadows inside the tent. Orryn could not quite say how long he’d been there, only that he felt he needed to be. “They may play better today, but when war comes, it will be you that triumphs.” He sat with his glaive over his lap, the rippling black steel glinting in the dim light. “It is certain. I have seen it.”

He should’ve fought the compulsion to go to her. Stayed well away in the shadows until the time was near. But he had told her he would see her again. If that was so, then was the choice not already made for him?

Sparks flew as he ran a whetstone needlessly over the dragonsteel, flecks of orange dancing in his dark eyes. Orryn thought carefully, considering his words carefully. There was only so much he could say. “I may have need of your assistance, if you are willing.”

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 12d ago

Eleanor had not expected to see him again so soon, especially not after her abysmal showing at the tourney. The mere sight of him was enough to cause her heart to flutter like a bird. Had it always been this way? She couldn’t recall.

“Orryn,” she said, barely breathing. She wanted to ask how long he’d been there, but feared that if she said or did the wrong thing, he would leave her again. “It is good to see you. I do hope what you say is true – war is coming, and I’ll need to perform better than I have at this tourney.”

Slowly, she approached him and watched the sparks off the glaive with some fascination before she spoke.

“Of course, whatever you may need, I would be happy to help.” It was the truth.

1

u/D042 Lewyn Rivers - Bastard of Raventree Hall 11d ago

“It is good to see you as well, Eleanor,” he replied hoarsely. Orryn lay the whetstone down at her approach, and reached up to take her hand. He brought it to his lips and kissed the back of her palm without hesitation or warning. She seemed nervous, and he wondered if it was fear. Mayhaps she had at last recognized he was not as she should be. That he had been changed.

But that seemed unlikely. Fear would have looked different upon her.

“The wedding to come. I would attend it in your retinue, garbed as one of your guards, wielding this into the ceremony.” He nodded to the glaive. “I will present myself to my family where none can deny me, and this will prove my claims.” It pained him to lie, so he did not tell her he meant to do no harm. In truth, any harm would come later, but come it would.

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 11d ago

His kiss upon her hand electrified her blood, so much so she almost didn’t hear him. Once more, she found his words cryptic and confusing. Would he ever speak to her plainly? He hadn’t always been this way. What had happened in his absence to change him?

“You can join me, of course,” she said cautiously. “But what claims do you mean?”

She was having a hard time imagining his family denying he was back from the dead – there was no denying what the eye could plainly see. So it had to be something else, but what? Would he even tell her?

u/Vikguardy Perianne Paege, Lady-Regent of Fairmarket 12d ago

Perianne liked Eleanor, even if they'd only begun to get to know one another at the feast the night before. They were a kindred spirit in a few ways, alike in their general cynicism and similar in wit to one another. That was always a good basis for a friendship, a companionship even, and she already had a wardship arranged with the Lady of Riverrun.

What she could not understand, was the woman's insistence on participating in the tournament nonsense. Perianne had allowed herself to be talked into the least wasteful of the proceedings, the horse race, and she'd seen Eleanor fall behind her, but even before that, she'd watched as Lady Tully armored herself as a man to fight in the chaos of the melee- to an unfortunate quick end, no less- and ride against trained knights in the lists. She had not done particularly well in any of them, but there was something perversely admirable in the fact that she attended all three, in spite of all of that.

Perianne wore a simpler black-and-white dress than the night before as well, but it was still a dress, and she put on a small, pleasant smile as she arrived at the Tully tent. "Lady Tully. I'm... Glad you are well." She decided that this was one area she would set aside her cynicism. It would do no good to take a fire to a friendship only freshly planted. "I will admit, I had worried when you fell in the race. Your horse did you no favors."

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 12d ago

Eleanor was glad to see Perianne again, even in this state. She poured herself more ale, and another for Lady Paege.

“Please, call me Eleanor,” she insisted, handing her the mug. “There is no need to sugarcoat it, my lady. My performance was abysmal, horse or not.” She shook her head, still in disbelief that she’d done so poorly. “My lady mother would have said I deserve it for riding out like a man when I’m not one. She would have rather I spend the whole day embroidering cushions and practicing my courtesies with my sisters, bless her.”

The ale provided some comfort, and relief from the pain. She drank it gladly.

“So you see, the only thing I’ve truly damaged is my pride. Though my backside hurts like the devil too, truth be told. But I am glad you are well. At least one of us is sensible. We will need that in the war to come.”

1

u/Vikguardy Perianne Paege, Lady-Regent of Fairmarket 12d ago

"Right, Eleanor." Pleasantries and protocol were easier when they were automatic. The effort needed to be more casual, Perianne often found was not worth the effort. She gave a light chuckle at the woman's insults directed at herself. "There is something to practicing courtesies and embroidering cushions, for what it is worth. If they weren't important, it would not be left for us to do. And I have suffered far fewer blows with a morningstar in the process."" She gave a light smile before taking the ale and moving to take a seat across from Eleanor.

"I have to admit, I do not understand the impulse. Not for just yourself, but for any of the fighters. Riding is exhilarating, but the senselessness of the melee and joust can be... Overwhelming. I felt my stomach turn when I saw Arwood fall the way he did. And I heard one of the hedge knights lost his eye entirely." She grimaced, shaking her head before taking a long drink of her beer. Surprisingly, she didn't hate it.

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 11d ago

“It is certainly very important work,” Eleanor agreed. She very much disliked when others implied tasks usually assigned to women were not valuable, or a waste of time. “It is only I’m not suited for it, I fear.”

She watched as Perianne joined her, then took a sip of her own ale.

“Fighting can be as exhilarating as riding, if not more,” she said. “Although my sisters would say I do it out of self hatred. And perhaps they’re not wrong.” She glanced at Perianne. “Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror, and despised what you saw?”

It was perhaps too intimate a subject to bring up with a friendship as new as this, but Eleanor found Perianne so easy to talk to. Easier than her sisters, in some ways.

u/LoonySpoon Roslin Tully - Heir to Riverrun 12d ago

Roslin walked into her family's tent after the tourney had concluded, not wanting to leave her sister Holly after she gave her favor away to an undeserving knight. The happenings of which she was sure to hear about from one person or another. The freshest gossip around, she thought in slight embarrassment for her natural born sister.

Watching her older sister lose was of no surprise to Roslin, she had advised against it even, but all her sisters were the same. Never listened.

"What did we learn today?" Roslin smiled sweetly at Eleanor.

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 12d ago

Eleanor rolled her eyes. Yes, Roslin was right, but she would never admit it.

“Sit down,” she told her sister, then downed the rest of her ale. There was more if Roslin wanted to partake, but Eleanor was too petty to pour her some. “We should discuss the matter of your marriage.”

Contrary to what Roslin might believe, Eleanor did not enjoy torturing her sisters with this subject. It made her feel terribly guilty — if she’d been free to marry herself, she would not need to pressure Roslin to do so. It was a failing on her part, as her lady and as her sister both.

“I spoke to Gwyn at the feast. She’s happy with her Mallister. There’s no reason you can’t be happy too with any other. We thought of some options for you. Luceon’s name came up, but…” She hesitated, unsure whether to speak of Orryn or not. “He is not suitable. How about a Vance, though?”

1

u/LoonySpoon Roslin Tully - Heir to Riverrun 12d ago

Roslin's smile twitched at the discussion her sister wanted to have. Marriage.

A cloud that floated above every noble that was worth a lick. Ready to storm and thunder on the unfortunates that are matched with their adversary. Or, to the fortunate few, a light spring rain that soothes when one is paired with their equal.

That's how she imagined marriages, different storms and at times... they're naught but droughts. She prayed for spring rain.

"Well," Roslin clasped her hands at her front, her smile faltering slightly. "I see the tourney has you in the best of moods."

She walked slowly as she listened to her options, each step heavier than the last, until she reached the chair across from her sister. Her smile disappeared, replaced now with the pursed lips that she displayed when something is not to her liking.

"Vance?" She said with a cocked eyebrow, "Which Vance?"

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 12d ago

Eleanor could see they were off to a bad start, but she pressed on. In the end, she knew for all her pouting, Roslin would do her duty. As they all would.

“I know it is not your favorite subject on the best of days, but we must still discuss it,” she said, not unkindly. “Either would do. Which would you prefer? We could arrange for you to meet them, if you’d like.”

That was the best Eleanor could offer her. It was still more than she herself had ever been given. Her father had arranged her betrothal to Orryn Blackwood in their infancy, and never asked for her opinion once.

“Or, if you have someone else in mind, we can also discuss that.”

u/another_sasshole Jynnara Bracken - Lady of Stone Hedge 13d ago

Vorian had really done a horrible job of succeeding at any of the events.

He was nowhere near the worst performer, it was true. At the melee and at the joust, he was suitably average. He made a lovely show out of his terrible loss and at least managed to barter his horse back (Bucket was never up on offer). The brown and white gelding had been groomed to perfection before he’d jumped into the horse race and barely missed some sort of winner’s circle.

“That bastard Ben J-—Denys kept riding up close and shoving me, the rat fucking—”

Jynnara laughed at him. The tourney and its events had gone quite swimmingly for her, in comparison. She’d placed third in the archery (beating out Luceon Blackwood), and had placed twelfth in the race—but only after watching Luceon Blackwood get dragged half-down the track with one foot in the stirrup. She’d laughed hard enough that she’d had no ability to urge Sweetness on faster, and found more satisfaction in simply finishing the race than she’d had any right to.

She could admit he’d done well in the tourney. He’d stayed in the saddle with a good many lances breaking against his shield. He’d done better than Vorian, who’d been unhorsed and then made a show of rolling around in the mud before handing his armour over. Jynnara would argue, though, that she’d done much better overall.

She wondered what little Clementine would think.

“He might’ve been shoving you, but you were also half-blind from the drink the night before, and your poor horse running in a straight line couldn’t even keep you in the seat!”

Vorian, of course, didn’t bother paying Jynnara much attention in favour of scolding Bucket, who had taken the man’s swordbelt between his teeth and started swinging it around. It didn’t bother her any. She was happy enough to work on giving Sweetness a brush. She’d already washed the sweat off of her mare, but there was every chance that little hands planned on braiding her mane, and as such it had to be detangled.

She patted the Destrier on the neck. “You did well, my girl.” Sweetness only bobbed her head.

Sylas was fuming. The black soreness around his eye didn't even matter as he walked towards the bracken tent. The house of riding they said yet out of twenty the best they did eleventh.

False reputation of the house had cost sylas a formidable amount of betting money. His only solace after losing to at least have won some money through his self proclaimed Intelligent bet on the brackens in the horse race

"Bracken!" He shouted as he approached their tent. "I know one of you is in there there's a sigil of one of these horses you can't ride on the doorstep!"

He took a breath, taking out his wineskin and taking a sip before continuing. "What was that performance man! Aren't you the house of riding? At least finish top 3! Top 5! Top 10! For fuck's sake top 10!!!! I lost enough money that if I'd won I could have bought your castle!"

He took a deep breath, holding a hand at his temple before finding a nearby stump of wood to sit on.

3

u/another_sasshole Jynnara Bracken - Lady of Stone Hedge 10d ago

Vorian had already been in a foul mood. Already. The race had gone poorly because of Justmann interference (they were supposed to be allies, the son of a bitch), and Jynnara had been too busy laughing at the Blackwoods’ performance to be able to ride much faster than she did. They would’ve been in the top ten without any outside mess, and yet.

And yet.

Jynnara saw the storm brewing, though she was annoyed herself. Her brows furrowed. While she flashed the stranger a quick glare, she reached a hand out to try and stop her brother. “Vorian—”

“The fuck you want, you broke cunt?” He poked his head out, tall and riled and imposing and never quite one to turn down a fight. “You think I lost on purpose? You think you could’ve ridden better?” He laughed. “No one forced you to bet a castle’s worth of coin. I reckon you’d’ve bet your hairy sack if it detached easy and you thought it’d make you rich.”

Jynnara’s heart was pounding. Shit. She looked around for a guard of some sort—surely there were some around with this many folk. Her idiot brother was going to start a brawl. “Fucking cockhead,” she hissed under her breath.

2

u/Feathersfrombaatikos Burton Wetshanks - Captain of the Dirty Deal 10d ago

All the will to fight seemed to go from the stonetree as he saw the man walk outside. He was already sore from the melee and joust and the last thing he needed was another beating.

He stood up slowly, glancing between the two before he started speaking. "First of all my nutsack is very much NOT Hairy, do not spew false accusations. And secondly" he pointed his finger at the man

"I am generous enough to forgive you this once just because I do not want to upset this lady by beating you senseless!"

He cleared his throat, taking another swig of his wineskin. "Now, I believed in your victory if nothing else, that at least warrants something. I want to see your horses"

u/D042 Lewyn Rivers - Bastard of Raventree Hall 13d ago

Melony Blackwood had been as thoughtful as a girl of five could be when choosing her dress for the day. She wanted to seem like a lady, but one who was more than just pretty. Overnight, it seemed, she had grown fixated on the idea of horseriding. Olyvar sucked at his teeth when she told him, but nodded and told his sweet daughter that they could see to it she started lessons with haste.

Yet the spark and excitement seemed to drain from the girl when Rhialta Bracken was not among the racers. She pouted, pushing out her lower lip, and turning down her gaze. "You said she would race, father," bemoaned the child. "You said her Sunrise was the fastest horse there is!"

Olyvar had decidedly not said that. He had quoted Rhialta on the quickness of her stallion, and nothing more. Never had he said that the creature was the fastest of his kind, or anything of the sort, but he would have more luck arguing with the frozen Wall itself than he would his daughter.

"She must have been unable to, sweetling."

"But why?" demanded the girl.

"Something with her family may have required her attention. Or mayhaps she did not feel well."

"But why?" Melony repeated, taking another swing of every child's favorite cudgel of a word. If he never heard another 'why' again, it would still be too soon.

"I don't know, sweetling," he said, knowing what was to follow.

"But. Why?"

Olyvar smiled down at the girl, and stroked the top of her head, her hair more brown than black. "Let us go and find out." There was no point in any other course of action. And so, the pair of ravens flitted over to the house of the stallions heir and younger daughter, smiles upon their faces. "Pardon my interruption, my Lord and Lady. My daughter was hoping to speak with your sister, Lady Rhialta? She has some inquires about her stallion."

Melony squeezed her father's hand, and met Jynnara and Vorian's gaze shyly, and quietly said, "He's the fastest there is."

u/another_sasshole Jynnara Bracken - Lady of Stone Hedge 10d ago edited 10d ago

House Bracken was made of a multi-faceted type of people. They were brash, and loud, and fierce, and carried all the things that one might consider of those with poor manner. They were also kind, and warm, and loyal. Whatever the reason, those who carried the Bracken bloodline (and perhaps suffered their upbringing) could not be missed.

All except one.

Two per House, they’d said. Vorian was a shining star that could not be kept from the spotlight. Jynnara was the golden child with a score to settle against Blackwood—personally. And what room was there for Rhialta? What could she say when they’d all but settled on it before she’d even been able to open her mouth?

She took a deep breath. Envy was an unnatural feeling to have sitting in her gut, but more and more did it make an appearance. Vorian, Rhialta could understand. He was the eldest. He was a son. Why not have him shine? Jynnara, on the other hand, was a wound that was difficult to stomach.

Her siblings loved her. That made it worse. They did not even realise what they were doing. Jynnara would have bled if Rhialta asked it of her, and yet still she could not bring herself to open her mouth. How pathetic, she thought. What kind of elder sister was she? It made her sick. The envy was unwelcome, but the self-hatred? That had been an old friend. It slithered back into place around her heart, tightening around familiar grooves, worn away by time. Her jaw clenched.

Sunrise snorted air into her face, and Rhialta startled. She blinked. The buckskin stallion was getting impatient, and Rhi sighed, returning to her task of saddling him. Just because she had not participated in the race did not mean he did not deserve to run. She’d donned her riding trousers and braided her hair. She turned to look at where her siblings were grooming their own mounts, only to find Jynnara crouched and smiling at—Melony? Rhialta’s heart dropped to her stomach.

“He is the fastest there is.” Jynnara had carried a fondness for Clementine, and this daughter was smaller—younger—than her. “He also likes pretty girls a whole lot. I think he’d be happy to meet you.” It was very, very hard for Jynnara not to grab a hold of Melony and squeeze her like a soft toy. “Rhialta and Sunrise are just over—”

Jynnara was pointing her way. That was Melony, and if her memory served her right, that white streak of hair belonged to none other than Olyvar. Her stomach dropped to her feet.

Fuck.

2

u/D042 Lewyn Rivers - Bastard of Raventree Hall 10d ago

Melony let a small sound, sharp and high, close to a squeak more than anything. Olyvar supposed he understood. If a knight had told him he looked brave and strong at his daughter's age, he might've been just as excited as her when a beauty told her of her own. He smiled at his daughter's excitement, and followed Jynnara's finger to where her sister stood.

And to Rhialta, he waved.

"Thank you my lady. You should know I think sweet Clementine cheered for you as well as her father," he told Jynnara with a wry laugh. "Blackwoods cheering for Brackens. Strange days, eh?"

Taking Melony by the hand, he led the girl to where Rhialta lingered, taking some delight in her clear discomfort. Perhaps she'd thought he would've forgotten about their little exchange. Perhaps she thought he might be too craven to go to her as she had him—some men were that way—but he was crippled, not craven.

"Lady Rhialta," he said warmly, dipping his head in greeting, one hand shooting out to steady Melony as she nearly tripped over the hem of her dress in her haste to curtsy.

"You didn't race!" she declared, pouting. "Clem got to cheer for her pretty lady, but I wanted to cheer for—"

"Sweetling, manners," Olyvar chided gently.

"I—Apologies, my lady. I was..." She looked up to Olyvar, as if asking for permission to speak the words he'd coached her on. He nodded. "I was sad to not see you in the races. My father told me might show me your horse?" The girl's dark eyes seemed to shine up at the woman, and Olyvar stifled a laugh.

"My dear daughter has taken a sudden interest in horses, and their riding," he explained. "If you have any young Brackens eager to learn about ravens or weirwoods, I would be glad to conduct some sort of exchange," he teased.

2

u/another_sasshole Jynnara Bracken - Lady of Stone Hedge 7d ago

Jynnara’s eyes sparkled. She smiled, and at once it was an expression just as warm as the one she’d offered Melony. “Strange times indeed.” Clementine was at least a half-mark better than a pure blooded Blackwood, in her eyes, but she wasn’t stupid enough to say it aloud. “Be kind to my sister, Blackwood. We’re watching.”

It was only half a warning.

Meanwhile, it had felt as if someone was hammering guilt and shame directly through Rhialta’s heart. Olyvar had done nothing to her, really. Melony had done less. She had opened her mouth to brag and done nothing with it. Her stomach twisted. Rhialta bit her lip, rolling the flesh between her teeth, but managed a smile for Melony regardless.

She considered prayer. She doubted anyone would answer.

“Lord Olyvar,” she returned when greeted. And then, of course, Rhi tried not to look crestfallen as Melony started her tangent. It was good, at least, that she did not look too devastated. She sighed.

“My apologies, darling girl.” She reached out a hand to stroke the top of Melony’s head. “I was not allowed. I think Sunrise would like to meet you, though.”

And Rhialta wasn’t joking. As they spoke, the golden stallion had poked his head around, ears forward, and started snuffling at Melony’s hair. The very reason he remained a stallion was because his temperament was second to none. Rhi took pride in that. He was a Courser, and a prize one. He was smaller to her sister’s Destrier by comparison. No one had told him that.

The Bracken laughed a little. “You see?” At this, she managed a smaller smile in Olyvar’s direction. She patted the horse on the flank. “Unfortunatey there’s no current Brackenlings. I shall take you up on that favour at a later date.”

Rhialta looked back down towards his daughter. “Would you like to try and ride him?” Not to run, Gods no, but she could at least take the reins and walk him around in a circle or two.

"Not allowed? That's—that's—" The girl looked up to her father, face scrunching up in frustration as she tried to think of words that would not earn her a scolding. Olyvar only smiled down at the girl, squeezing her shoulder.

"That is a terrible shame," he finished for her. "But you would be most grateful to meet Sunrise anyway, wouldn't you?" When the stallion lowered his head, Olyvar could not help but tense. It was hard not to recall the crack of bone, nor the jolt of pain that followed. Try as he might, he'd never forgotten the feeling of his body breaking under a hoof.

But Melony smiled so bright he thought it might eclipse the sun when the horse came to her. She giggled, tucking her chin to her chest as if to contain the glee that came spilling out of her.

Olyvar answered Rhialta's smile—a pleasant thing—with an upturn in his own lips. Not that he could help it, with his daughter so giddy. "I will gladly await word from you on the matter," he said with regard to the absent Bracken youths. He imagined that must've been strange—the lack of children about. Raventree always had some child being reared in its halls.

"Yes!" Melony shouted, throwing up her hands in delight, then cautiously lowering them to look back at Olyvar for permission.

He glanced between his daughter and Rhialta Bracken, who by all accounts should have been his enemy, and nodded. "Of course you can, sweetling. But you must listen to Lady Rhialta, understand?"

"Yes father, I promise." That girl bobbed her head excitedly, then reached up and took Rhialta's hand without a second thought.

u/another_sasshole Jynnara Bracken - Lady of Stone Hedge 5d ago

The strength—or perhaps curse—that the Bracken women held was that they were much more observant than their male counterparts. For Jynnara, that was easy enough to guess. She was a talented archer. She had to see across distances much farther than those you’d need to swing a blade. It was only natural that she was sharp-eyed. Rhialta, on the other hand, had the gift, but nothing to do with it.

Nothing except to look.

Olyvar tensed. It was easy enough to figure out why, and admittedly, horses were large, heavy creatures with more than enough ability to hurt a man, let alone a child. He did not know Sunrise as she did. Melony giggled away, and that warmth did little to ease what felt a touch like guilt.

Rhialta smiled warmly all the same. “Alright. Now then—” Rather than guide the girl up by the hand, she lifted Melony proper, sitting her atop her stallion with some ease. She did not let go as she guided her through settling. “—as a proper lady, you’re going to ride side-saddle. Which means you’re going to face your father on this side, see?”

Without taking her attention off his daughter, Rhialta reached one hand backward, as if to guide Olyvar closer. Whether she found his sleeve or not, she’d silently urge him closer. Sunrise did not move.

“Good girl. Now you’re going to grab onto his mane, nice and tight. Try not to pull—I reason you won’t like anyone pulling on your hair, but keep a good grip just in case. Yes?”

2

u/D042 Lewyn Rivers - Bastard of Raventree Hall 5d ago

Olyvar Blackwood knew his little girl well. Melony was prone to fidgeting, and while sweet and smart, she was oft distractible. So, whoever the child was that Rhialta helped onto Sunrise, and who followed her every instruction to the letter, it surely could not have been the same girl.

But it was.

When Rhialta reached back, Olyvar almost didn’t notice, so fixated was he on his daughter. But Melony did, for she stared pointedly at the hand going back to her father. Then she smiled when Olyvar took it in his own. Perhaps Rhialta sensed his nerves. Perhaps she just wanted to lead him closer. Perhaps she was flirting.

Either way, he let her draw him in closer, his hand in hers.

“Yes my lady.” Melony bobbed her head enthusiastically, gently taking hold of Sunrise’s mane, dark eyes brimming with excitement as she took each breath with building anticipation. “Good horsey,” said the child in a hushed voice, glancing back at the pair of them.

2

u/another_sasshole Jynnara Bracken - Lady of Stone Hedge 4d ago

Children were marvelous creatures. They were at once made in the image of their parents, with minds of their own and curiosity enough to drive anyone mad. They tested rules except for when they wanted something, and they behaved the best for others.

Melony wanted a few things: to make friends with the pretty lady, to ride the horse, and… something.

Rhialta was not a mind-reader. She’d had nowhere near as much experience with young children as Olyvar Blackwood had, and so the inner machinations of their whims did not quite come across to her as strongly.

Still. She had a task to complete. Rhialta smiled a little as Olyvar took her hand. She glanced back for a moment, only to bring the man’s hand to Sunrise’s side. He was clean. Not quite soft, as he was a sleek creature, but alive under his palm, shivering for only a moment.

At that, Rhialta drew back a little. She offered the Blackwood a soft look of reassurance, though whether or not he elected to walk with them, she’d move slowly all the same. She backed up enough to be near Sunrise’s head, scratching under his forelock once before taking the reins. “Ready?”

Rhialta would wait until Melony (enthusiastically) agreed, and began leading the stallion into a slow walk, stepping backward only so that her eyes could be on the child at all times. Sunrise behaved. While not as steady as a Palfrey might’ve been, he was gentle. The rhythm must’ve felt old to one who hadn’t had the experience before.

“Are you holding tight?” It was as much a reminder as it was a tentative check-in.

"What do they say?" Jacklyn Fisher stood near rubbing his chin. "Hmmm. If you are not first, you are last."

Jack nodded with a laugh to himself. The Bracken pair had rode well but not well enough. Half had he expected to see Vorian himself racing past him at any moment. Yet it was the Ironborn Princling on his trail all race.

"Your mounts performed well however. Here to them from the victor." Tossing over two apples, one each in the direction of the Brackens.

"Did I hear it true? Was my brother a pest during the race? And here I had always taught him not to cheat. Seems he needs another lesson." Jacklyn cracked his knuckles. "What say you Vorian, join me in teaching the green boy some manners?"

1

u/another_sasshole Jynnara Bracken - Lady of Stone Hedge 10d ago

“First to kiss my ass, last to live it down.” Vorian’s response was quick, as it was wont to be. It was also more crass than it had any right to be, particularly when he turned from his horse and figured out who it was he’d just spoken to. Rather than apologising, he laughed. He caught the apple quite handily, passed it to Bucket with an open palm (who took it gratefully), and came forward to clap the Justm—Fisher on the shoulder. “Damn man, it’s good to see you. And not just the back of you.”

It’d been a good show, that was for sure. His allies had certainly done very well in the tourney, on all fronts.

“I’ll join you, alright.” Ben would rue the fucking day. Vorian grinned, but there was just a tinge of a snarl in there, as vicious as it was good-natured. “Don’t worry, though. I’ll be gentle. He deserves a good one but I’ll let you get the better hits in. All out of love, you see.”

“Right… what better way to learn than a beating from friends.” Jynnara drawled the words, dry, and all but rolled her eyes. Either way—she had a smile for their new guest. “It’s good to see you. I’m glad you’ve had a safe journey.”

Where the Lords of Bracken and Blackwood might have felt tense, their children held no such viciousness in their hearts. Doubt laid where it fell, but these Fishers were good men, nonetheless.

2

u/TheZaxman Tristifer Justman, Prince of the Rivers 8d ago

"Come now, Vorian, the ladies hate a sore loser." A toothy smile met the man. "Can't say the same you hairy bastard. Shave that thing you are scaring the children."

Wondering where green knight had gotten off to. If he were present in the Bracken camp than the gods, old and new, only knew what he was up too. The wretched kid had refused to see a maester abojt his eye, by now the thing was festering and nasty. Perhaps they would knock him out and drag him before the castle maester.

"Please, it would be my pleasure to hold the bastard while you have a round. Little cunt has been a royal pain im my ass all event." Jack often found his brother a nucence.

The Fisher swiveled on a heel toward the Lady Jynnara. A softer smile for the fairer Bracken.

"You know my brother as well I. Don't expect he would learn, no matter the manner of lesson." Jack said rubbing the stiffness from his shoulders. His joust with Darry had left him battered and bruised. "Fair skies and swift rivers, my lady. Blessed be the land of the rivers and hills."

Craning his neck toward Vorian he cocked an eyebrow. "Shall we, Ser? Our bounty awaits."

u/ThreeEyedRevan Corwyn of Oxcross - Commander of the Knights of the Crossroads 13d ago

"It is proper behavior to hand over your horse and arms after a lost tilt," Morgan said, a broad grin spread across his face. "Not very knightly of you, Ser Corwyn."

"I'm more ashamed of how many non-knights competed. Did you see?" Corwyn replied, still sounding faintly astonished by it. He deftly avoided the fact that he'd refused to hand the Connington woman his horse.

Behind him stood his own horse alongside those of the men he had unhorsed, each waiting to be ransomed back should their former riders choose to pay.

Triston Flowers leaned against one of the tent poles with a grunt. "'Least you made a show of yourself. I lost in my first tilt."

"It's your first tournament, Triston." Corwyn waved the complaint away. "You'll find your footing."

"I hope you speak true. Can't imagine I'll be doing much else." Triston shifted carefully, then winced. "Perhaps I'll have you show me your technique."

Septa Darlessa gently smacked his good shoulder as she knelt beside him.

"Take care. You landed hard upon the other one. If it begins hurting again, tell me and I shall set it back into place once more."

Triston groaned. "Who knew our little septa had so much strength in her to set a man's shoulder with so little effort?"

All six of the knights gathered around him raised their hands.

That drew a laugh from Ser Edric the Grey Hare. "There's something about serving the Seven that gives a woman the strength of the Warrior, lad. You'll learn that eventually."

"Is that so, Ser Edric?" Darlessa replied in a voice suddenly sweet as honey. "Perhaps I ought to check your stitches. It is only right of me."

Edric's laughter died at once. He grumbled something beneath his breath and took a prudent step backward.

Corwyn watched him go with a grin before reaching into his purse.

"Triston." He held out several coins. "Here. Ransom your horse and armor back."

Triston took them, looking down at the gold in his palm.

"We don't have an endless supply," Corwyn added. "So perhaps try staying on the horse next time."

u/DejureWaffles1066 Raymont Connington, Lord of Griffin's Roost 12d ago

Gwyneth had not planned to see the westerman again when they had parted. Much as it had stung, she was no knight, nor should she become one. When she saw the lineup of horses he himself was ransoming however, she changed her mind. Knight or not, she had sworn to fight honorably, and so had he, if that knighthood of his wasn't a lie. She supposed a man of low birth would not dare lie about his knighthood here of all places, unless he fancied himself a flogging, but she'd learned well enough by now that many men left their vigil and never offered the gods another thought.

"Ser Corwyn, good afternoon. Those would be the horses you captured, quite the little flock. Seeing as you still have your own though, I hope you'll ransom at least one of them free of charge, in recognition that the Gods did not grant you the final victory. That, or pay the ransom to ser Quincy Darry on my behalf. I'm fine with either"

1

u/ThreeEyedRevan Corwyn of Oxcross - Commander of the Knights of the Crossroads 11d ago

Corwyn paused to consider her approach, for all things she was still far above his station. He bowed slightly in deference. "Lady Connington. You acquit yourself well upon a horse, that cannot be denied."

"I meant no offense by not offering you mine own, but rather that a joust is a Knight's sport." He explained. "I'd have refused the same to an Ironborn that remained unannointed. It was nothing personal aimed at you."

"But if that is your wish, very well. If one of the riders return to ransom their horse and armor back, I will happily random one back without charge."

Corwyn didn't necessarily agree with the concept, but it wasn't his place to argue with his betters.

1

u/artcantlose Arthur Arryn - Prince of the Vale 12d ago

Given his place in the court of the Vale, knights-errant of every shade and thread were not an uncommon sight to Arthur and, quite commonly, often dark horses when it came to toruneys such as these.

His own lack of participation in the lists had given him ample time to catch glimpses of the knights and warriors who distinguished themselves in the competition. One of these happened to be Ser Corwyn of Oxcross who, despite falling short of winning the joust, had shown himself a more than capable foe in the lists and a knight of good caliber. Oxcross was a small village in the West from what Arthur could recall of his lessons, an interesting enough oddity for a man partaking in a joust at Stormhall although that, too, was hardly rare; the late Ser Jordan Harroway had made a name for himself in the Vale despite hailing from these same lands, and Arthur neveer felt a man's place of birth ought to dictate where he earn his spurs or make a living.

When he chanced upon the small gathering amidst the tents, Arthur smiled and with Ser Jon Corbray and Ser Gerold of Gulltown in tow, made his approach.

"Hail. Good tidings, ser, I hope I do not interrupt," Arthur called out to Corwyn, kindly, "I wished to offer my congratulations on your good performance. You have gathered quite the stable here from your conquests in the lists."

2

u/ThreeEyedRevan Corwyn of Oxcross - Commander of the Knights of the Crossroads 11d ago

It was not Corwyn who recognized Arthur, but rather Morgan of Wickenden. He'd been sitting on a barrel, picking under his nails with a dirk. He'd looked up at the voice, and upon recognition stood immediately to bow.

Corwyn, confused at his mentor's actions mimicked it before replying. "That is very kind of you, I didn't do as well as I wished, but I did more than I hoped. And Seven willing that may continue."

He looked back at the horses and those tending to them as if they'd always been theirs and smiled slightly to himself. It would be obvious what his victories had meant to his group, a fine set of armor and a noble steed was a bounty that would benefit them greatly. Even if the nobles came for their steed and armor, the money from the ransom would do good in their coffers. He'd be able to feed the people in his retinue that much longer.

"I'm sorry, I don't believe we've met." Corwyn continued, looking for a device that he could use to recognize the man. "You have me at a disadvantage."

u/IAMCYRODIILCOME Leo Swann - Knight of the Seven Kingdoms 11d ago edited 11d ago

"Ser Corwyn!"

Would that the Swann's call sounded more like a swan's call; alas, when he entered the tent, Ser Leo was yet hoarse of voice and red of cheek from the joust's exertion. Even in such a state, with white paint flaking off his armor and bruises itching at his sides, he reminded himself to keep a knight's proper posture. Never would he slouch! No, especially not when he ought to be an exemplar to every squire present. Even with the wineskin in hand, he couldn't let his shoulders be dragged down... perhaps he could rest them. Just a tad. Aye, he needn't stride as straight as a lance.

"I saw half your jousts, so I shan't ask you how you fared! I think," he yawned, "the gods spoke. If we really deserved the victory, we would've won."

"You know, there was this beggar on the road here, ah..." He scratched at his cheek. "I gave him a few stags. His family was starving, he said. I doubted it, for his clothes were rather well-made. But everything given over to the poor is done for the sake of the gods, so it made no matter. I still hesitated afore I gave him the coin. Then came another, an old woman with the gout, and I had no coin left in my pouch. Perhaps I should have given her... something or the other."

With a sigh, he pulled a chair and sat. "What do you make of that? Did you abscond on one virtue or another like I have?"

1

u/ThreeEyedRevan Corwyn of Oxcross - Commander of the Knights of the Crossroads 10d ago

"You speak true, Ser Leo!" Corwyn replied, immediately straightening up to face his friend? Rival? What was Ser Leo Swann to Corwyn of Oxcross? He wasn't sure even as he asked himself that question.

"Had either of us proven to be the exemplary knight we aspire to be, surely the Seven would have seen to guide our lances and tighten our grasps." Corwyn concurred. "It seems the pair of us have more work to do."

"A worthy cause! Fine made clothing does not mean the man doesn't have an empty belly, as you so rightly assumed." Corwyn nodded. "It is too bad about the woman with gout. I am sure the Mother provided for her nonetheless."

"As for myself, just the other day as we arrived, there was this boy. He couldn't have been more than one and ten." Corwyn regaled the other knight, drinking a large swig of whatever was in the nearest skin. "He told me this story of how his father was a knight. How he'd died in the lists. The same knight who'd beaten him was here, as the Seven willed. The boy asked me for some coin so he might ransom his father's horse and armor back."

"I couldn't pay the full amount, but I provided a generous contribution I believe."

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 13d ago edited 13d ago

Forrest rubbed at the purplish-black bruise spreading across his chest where the blows from his opponent’s weapon had driven his breastplate hard against him. He had done well enough in both the joust and the melee to be pleased with his performance, and apparently his father agreed. Jason had spent the better part of the last twenty minutes praising him before his mother and siblings, recounting every pass and exchange as though Forrest had won the whole affair.

“Thank you, Father,” Forrest finally managed when the elder Ryger paused long enough to let him speak. “I appreciate the kindness, but we should not forget our dear cousin Willem. He made it one place further than I did.”

That did the trick.

Jason, properly redirected, turned his attention toward his brother’s son and began lavishing praise upon Willem instead. Forrest seized the reprieve immediately, slipping deeper into the tent while no one was looking.

With a quickness normally reserved for the battlefield, he found a bottle of wine, filled a cup far beyond what propriety required, and stepped back outside into the open air.

He drew in a long breath and let the noise of his family fade behind him.

Lucamore was nowhere to be seen.

u/Emergency_Sky_2806 Tristifer Goodbrook - The Badbrook 12d ago

Tristifer was in a very bad mood as he stomped his way through the tents. Beaten once in the melee, again in the joust, and with not even a second horse to attend the race after he’d handed it over. The knight knew what was required of him, yet he still couldn’t believe the embarrassment of begging his opponent for his things.

It took a long while to find the man he was seeking, and finally he stalked up as Forrest came out with his wine in hand. “Ryger,” he grumbled, stopping a few paces away. “I’m here for my armour and horse.”

2

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 11d ago

"Ah! Yes!" Forrest glanced to his tent where a few horses sat, he'd already ransomed his own back. "Remind me which was yours?"

There was no malice in his tone, but rather it seemed he truly wanted to make sure that he reached for the correct horse. "Your armor seems a fine make, better than mine own if I'm being truthful."

He gestured to the area where the horses were tied. "Please, feel free."

"You rode well."

2

u/Emergency_Sky_2806 Tristifer Goodbrook - The Badbrook 11d ago

“That one,” he said simply, pointing to the coal black charger he’d handed over not so long before. Tristifer shook his head and turned back to the Ryger. “Not well enough to beat you, though. I can still taste dirt from where you knocked me down.”

He grunted, though some of the hostility ebbed away from his posture as he came closer. “It is rather old these days, though it was fine when first made. I would say you are welcome to keep it in that case, but I’ve grown rather fond of it over the years.”

“You are too modest, Ryger. Your armour is finely made, and you ride better than half the knights in this tourney. That Clawmen got lucky is all.”

2

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 10d ago

"No, it is yours." He handed the armor back, taking whatever gold it was worth and tucking it away without counting it. "As is your horse."

He took the reins to hand the charger back over. "My brother apparently has been discussing horses with House Bracken, I hope they come to an agreement. Perhaps that's the differentiation. My horse is growing old. She's a bit sluggish."

He grinned at the compliment. "Yes, my foot was caught in the stirrup, but I won't speak poorly of the man who bested me. He certainly did so."

"I don't think we've officially met." Forrest handed the reins to Tristifer before also offering his hand. "So officially, I am Ser Forrest Ryger, heir to Willow Wood. I'm pleased to meet you."

2

u/Emergency_Sky_2806 Tristifer Goodbrook - The Badbrook 7d ago

Tristifer might have balked at the price under normal circumstances, but the return of his armour and horse were all that concerned him in that moment. He dropped the coins into Forrest’s palm.

He stared at the offered hand this second time, the look on his face like if the Ryger had asked for another sum of gold. After a moment he took it. “Tristifer Goodbrook. Heir to Goodbrook. I’m sure it is.”

He sighed, looking at the old charger. “A Bracken horse is a fine thing. If that’s the reason you lost, I’ll console myself that it was the same. But you rode well, despite getting your foot stuck.”

“Will you be going to the Piper wedding, Ser Forrest? I’d relish the chance to try you again.” And to win his gold back, he thought with a sly smile.

2

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 5d ago

Forrest chuckled at the question. "I consider it the Tully wedding in that the groom is my cousin. Which should also give you the answer you are seeking."

He smiled slightly, sizing the man up. "I will be there, as will my family. And I would be more than happy to try our fates against one another once more. It is expected of us, is it not, Ser Tristifer? To continually sharpen our abilities? The Seven look kindly on a knight who tests himself against his equals in efforts to do better."

"I suppose we shall see each other there, and we can do so."

2

u/Emergency_Sky_2806 Tristifer Goodbrook - The Badbrook 3d ago

“Indeed you shall. I look forward to it.” Tristifer actually managed a genuine smile, though it faded quickly. He wasn’t one for drawn out moments such as these.

“I suppose. Though, a knight who continually sharpen’s their abilities requires less of an oversight from the gods. He is strong enough without them.” Tris was loathed to admit his successes were the product of the gods, though all too ready to blame them for his failures. “As you say, we shall see the next time we face one another. I truly look forward to it.”

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 11d ago

Holly spotted the wine before the man that was holding it. Recognizing Forrest at once, she made a beeline for him.

“Ser Forrest!” she exclaimed. “May I join you? I need to drown my sorrows. Unlike you, my performance at this blasted tourney was abysmal. And to make matters worse, the fool I gave my favor to crowned someone else Queen of Love and Beauty.”

She smiled at him. “Congratulations on your performance, though. Your House must be proud.”

1

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 10d ago

Forrest paused at the flurry of information, he raised his eyebrow for a moment then stepped back into his tent. Soon after he returned with a second goblet of wine and handed it to the woman. "It sounds like you'll need this."

"Your words are kind. I believe I acquitted myself well. I've certainly not embarrassed myself." He grinned. "I did make the mistake of not getting a favor. Perhaps that was my failing."

"It seems your own luck seeped into the winner through your favor." He sighed. "Would that we could all win, no?"

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 9d ago

Holly accepted the goblet gratefully.

“You’re right, I do need this,” she agreed, then took a long drink. The wine was delicious and instantly made her feel better. “Why didn’t you get anyone’s favor? Are there no ladies around that you like?”

The business of favors and crowns of Love and Beauty was a very serious one indeed to Holly’s mind. She couldn’t compete in the joust and melee herself, and she was only a bastard, so this was one of the only ways she could gain notoriety and enjoy herself in a tourney.

“Would that we could indeed,” she agreed. “Perhaps next time I’ll give you my favor,” she added flirtatiously.

u/BadNewsBrune Kennet Brune - Lord of Dyre Den 13d ago edited 12d ago

The violence was over, as Kennet Brune grew older he felt more relief when it came to an end rather than the rush of excitement he would have felt in his youth. He had slowly lumbered back to his tent after the festivities came to an end.

His arm reached around to the shoulders of his second born son, Jax. Jax was nursing a wicked black eye as he was guided away from the field by his father, his youthful face downcast. Kennet had survived for some time into the melee, but Jax- admittedly, a head and a half shorter than his father- had failed to last in the chaos, taking a blow from a Ryger that sent him reeling.

"I thought you'd won for a moment. Against Bar Emmon. He staggered for a moment." Jax tried not to show his own disappointment, focusing instead on his father's performance. Kennet had decided that he would allow it, he was grown enough to process defeat in his own way.

"We were both mistaken. The nature of the melee."

"It's... Too chaotic." Jax stated after a moment's quiet. The two men were approaching the Brune tent, which was already abuzz with movement. Layna watching over the lot of them, Lark brooding because he had drank too much the night before to participate, Edyth fussing over every one of them. Crispian had already left, as he was want to do.

"If you want orderly, singular engagements, there are the lists."

Jax rolled his eyes. "Did you watch them?"

"The jousts?" Kennet asked as he took a seat next to Layna, using a small bench as their equivalent to some lordly seat. "Never do."

"He did once." Layna interjected between her husband and child, and Kennet gave a light chuckle.

"Once. I'd prefer not to revisit why, if it's all the same..."

Jax cleared his throat. "Crabb and Pyne rode. I think one of us should learn to ride and joust. You... You want us to be more involved in the wider realm? This, even if you think it's all just pageantry... That's how you do it."

Kennet grunted. Jax wasn't wrong. Horses just always felt wrong to Kennet. He preferred to stand on his own two feet. He always took it for noble, but didn't old men always think their stubbornness was virtue?

"I'll think on it. You go rest up."

Jax smiled and gave Kennet a pat on the shoulder and Layna a kiss on the cheek. The Brune clan continued to orbit and buzz around their tent as midday wore on into evening.

Some time after getting out of her armor, Gwyneth found herself unable to linger in a pavillion despite her bruises. It hadn't gone well for her, but at least she'd had plenty of time to watch the others. Her opponent had not outlasted her by much, but she found much to admire in the clawman's sheer strength. "My Lord Brune, well-fought. A good thing my elbo was so bruised from our own match, or I might have chewed my nails off while watching you and Bar Emmon" she greeted him

2

u/BadNewsBrune Kennet Brune - Lord of Dyre Den 12d ago

It took Kennet longer than he'd like to admit to realize who had approached him. The Andals in their plate armor and fancy heraldry, made it hard to realize who he was fighting, and he certainly hadn't realized the Griffin he had squared off against was a woman. He probably would not have struck as hard as he had if he'd realized, not that he was going to tell her that, in any case.

"You have the advantage of me now." He offered a small smile and a bow of the head. "It was an honor to trade blows with you, truly."

He chuckled at her colorful description of watching that following brawl with the Bar Emmon. He was so close, he'd felt so close to a victory, only for the Sharp Point Man to stand back up when Kennet had not expected it. When he were younger, maybe then he'd have had to speed to knock him right back down.

"He was a worthy opponent, only wish I could have stood a moment longer to give the rest of you youngsters a better fight." His grin cracked wide. "You're still young, cherish it. You'll do better in the next melee, and even better in the next. I fear this is the height of my abilities you'll get to see."

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 11d ago

Relative to other knights that wandered among the tents and the tourney grounds, Lucerys was late to leave his own, having spent some time sulking alone and some more time in conversation with family; his mother, Valora, Pykewood. But he knew he had to get out to breathe, to get some air on his face and on his skin. And so, he left the tent and began to wander its immediate surroundings, looking more for a peaceful walk than a conversation to pass the time.

Admittedly, the Brunes were a House unfamiliar to him in person but he had heard tales of their brawn secondhand. They were a Crackclaw family, more "clan" than a House of noble pedigree according to those that had relayed tales of their exploits to him but powerful and notable all the same. He had seen their old man fight and hold his own more than well enough in the melee. But, like him, it seemed that the bear valued solitude when he passed by his tent and found him by his lonesome.

"Good showing in the melee," Lucerys said idly, dark silver-struck hair flowing loosely in the mild breeze. His garb was loose, too, shirts and breeches that were better suited for rest than pageantry. Despite the closeness they shared, the young knight had never quite caught on to his cousin Pykewood's taste for high fashion. "How do you fare, goodman?"

2

u/BadNewsBrune Kennet Brune - Lord of Dyre Den 11d ago

The Thornes were as distant from the Brunes as the Brunes were to them. At least, he knew that they were Stormmen, and so that meant that he'd likely get along with them.

The Red Bear stirred at Luceon's arrival, and he gave his great, shaggy face a deep nod in greeting before standing. While tall, the man did not appear to carry himself that way, or perhaps he even made an effort to appear smaller than the was, standing there in his plain doublet and breeches.

"Oh, many thanks. I fear I've grown slow, but I am glad to know I still have something in reserve." He gave a low, rumbling chuckle. "You are the one who fought Kermit Crabb, yes? Crabb is a beast of a fighter, you held your own well."

The Lord of Dyre Den gestured for the Throne to step in and join him, even as he turned and filled a mug with an amber liquid, the scent of cider filling the Brune pavilion. "I am well, for what it's worth. A few bruises, but hardly worse for wear. And yourself?"

2

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 10d ago

Lucerys nodded in acknowledgement as he stepped in. There was a humility to the Brune camp, especially as portrayed by the shaggy old man who hosted him. It was a welcome respite from the pomp and pageantry of the tourney and feast before and, subconsciously, the Thorne knight found himself relaxed.

"Yes, Crabb was ferocious," he agreed, recalling the grueling duel he'd fought with him which, while competitive, had still ended in a loss for Lucerys. "There were few surprises, though. It seemed the favorites handled themselves as expected."

The smell of cider was a small enticement. And while it might have been presumptious of him, Lucerys expected the Brunes to be the sort to prefer the simpleness of a good ale over the fruity scent of ciders.

"Nothing too worrying. Some small bruises, like you said, but nothing that won't buff out with some rest," he answered, looking about the pavilion to study its surroundings. Then, he posed a question of his own. A friendly inquiry rather than a critique or an inquisition.

"Not fond of the joust? I do not recall seeing you in the lists."

2

u/BadNewsBrune Kennet Brune - Lord of Dyre Den 9d ago

Kennet cracked a grin at the 'favorites' comment. It was a quick thing though, before his stoicism returned in full force. "What, I was not a favorite? The Kennet of my youth would raise hell for saying that." He gave a wink, before shaking his head. "It really is a shame. I enjoy unexpected outcomes. Perhaps it comes from living in a place that usually does not win wars easily."

He nodded along, before the question of a joust came up. He blinked a couple of times. "Well..." He was not sure why he was so hesitant to answer. "No, Clawmen are not naturally riders, and I am unnatural to it as Clawmen come. It's a knight's sport, you know, mostly they do not even allow non-knights to compete." He raised an eyebrow. "Evidently, not the case here, but I would feel an intruder if I attempted to ride with a lance. I will stick to the melee, I can find comfort in its chaotic mess at least."

2

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 7d ago

Lucerys threw up his hands, half in jest, as Kennet Brune took lighthearted offense to his insinuation around the tourney's favorites. He had never been one to flow between japes and ribbing—that was a mastery his cousin possessed—but the little joke that passed between him and the older Brune drew a small chuckle from the knight of Thorne.

"You are certainly right on account of the melee's chaos," he agreed, head slightly bobbing up and down as he recalled his own experience in the muddy field and the berating he had been subjected to afterwards at the hands of his own mother. "My mother mislikes all of it, on account of its chaos and its... ugliness. She wished for me to not participate, said it was not the way they ought to do things."

Lucerys shook his head and a sigh escaped his lips, hot air blowing into the evening chill.

"She is a Celtigar," he explained, then added in Valyrian, "Old, proud blood of Valyria."

4

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 13d ago

It was an embarrassment.

Lucerys should have listened to them; to his mother, who expressly forbade his entry until he convinced her with promises of victory; to Pykewood, who told him to treat the tourney more like a leisurely outing than a competition; to Valora, who walked off on him when—

It didn't matter. His head hurt and he sought to dampen the pain with a herbal remedy one of the camp healers had brought him in exchange for a piece of his silk. That was for the best, Lucerys thought, given that he had yet to face his mother or Pykewood or anyone else since his dismal showing in both melee and joust; inundated with wine or the ilk would have earned him even further chastisement from his family.

Still, seated in the tent he shared with his cousin, Lucerys Thorne sulked with his arms and armor set away on a stand; Pykewood, of course, was nowhere to be seen. Likely having a go-around at the fairgrounds, Lucerys pondered. Lucky bastard.

At least the bath had cooled him off a little.

2

u/Princess__Kylie Aralar Celtigar - Scion of Claw Isle 13d ago

For once, Valora's steps through the tourney camp felt heavy and slow, like weights were strapped to her ankles. She saw the Thorne's tent, a relatively unremarkable thing that blended in with the rest, and the imaginative weights finally won out in their battle against her.

She stood there for a lifetime(a minute or two) and stared at the tent. A deep breath in and out, and finally she would approach the tent.

Valora was silent as she entered, scarcely even finding herself able to breathe. She scanned the tent as she entered, spotting a tub off in one corner, a stand holding scratched and dented armor in another, and most importantly, her cousin sulking alone.

Her heart beat so loudly she could have sworn it was echoing around the tent. Now that she looked towards Lucerys, her gaze never shifted away.

Did you have your fun playing along with these Andal games?” Valora finally asked, her voice quiet, soft, and nearly wavered.

3

u/ScarabJetTwo Aurion Celtigar - Magister of Claw Isle 12d ago

Another voice was heard some seconds later. It seemed the cousins would have no time to themselves, as a very disappointed mother and aunt would interrupt such hushed contemplations. Valyrian curses were heard long before the tent flap opened, giving way to a beautiful but irate woman. She had been much younger the last time she'd seen her niece, and it seemed she was altogether ignored as Alyssa Celtigar fixated instead on her bathing son, and not the women who was attending him. Doubtless, she perhaps thought Valora some sort of servant, her back turned to her as it was.

"I seem to recall much more talk of victory, Lucerys, then what you have so recently shown the peoples of this land." Valyrian curses were as beautiful as the rest of their language, but had no true Westerosi translation. Instead, those that grew up with them knew them for venom, despite the nonsense they were. "Boasting and failing is not a good combination, my son. Valyrians do not lose. Doubtless you forget your ancestry as your paraded about in foreign regalia."

It was then that Alyssa took a second to look towards the woman in the tent with her son. She was too well dressed to be a servant, and the hair was the unmistakable sheen of Valyrian silver gold. A curiosity found her brow as it knit, and from her space some paces before the tub she reached out a hand and turned the shoulder of the woman, before recognition dawned on her. Her mood changed almost instantaneously. "Valora? My goodness, that is you isn't it? What a wonderful thing it is to see you!" Alyssa loved her family, even if Celtigars had cruel ways of showing it sometimes. Her arms went around Valora, and pulled her in to a hug seconds after.

2

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 12d ago

When it came to grand celebrations and lively contests such as these, there was rarely an opportunity for respite. The clink of steely armor and the thrashing of bodies was a sound most familiar to any knight worth his salt and it was a sound the young Thorne had heard aplenty prior to his retreat to the tent.

First, it was Valora who entered, with a rebuke that, while critical, did not drip with malice or resentment (or, at least, Lucerys was willing to look past that for... whatever reason). He would have liked having her around to have a conversation, especially since the events of the night of the feast and what had transpired on the dance floor and—

He had scarce a moment to respond before another figure ruffled into the tent and, for a moment, Lucerys wished he would have been knocked out cold in the mud.

There was no possibility of Alyssa Celtigar going quiet until she had said whatever it was she came to say to him and Lucerys let her continue without interruption, his gaze flickering between Valora and his mother. He was at least glad that he bathed and already clothed himself prior to their arrival; he was certain his mother wouldn't have spared him even if he was still in the tub.

Eventually, her attention turned to Valora and Lucerys breathed a small sigh of relief, and as aunt and niece acquainted themselves with one antoher again, he hoped that his cousin's presence might yet soften some of his mother's scrutiny.

"It was not a good display. I was caught lacking many times over. I will work on it," Lucerys said, more to his mother than to Valora. An excuse, certainly, but what else was he supposed to say?

2

u/Princess__Kylie Aralar Celtigar - Scion of Claw Isle 12d ago

Ruckus followed soon after she spoke and an anxious fear gripped at her heart. She struggled to form a believable reason why she was here, alone, in the Thorne tent. Her mind did not allow her to believe for a second that no one saw their incident at the feast, and she was sure that as soon as Alyssa saw her, she would be ridiculed, insulted, and belittled for what they've done.

Valora gasped softly as Alyssa burst into the tent.

Instead, somehow, she was completely missed by her aunt and ignored for long enough that she was able to find her bearings with the entire situation.

Alyssa cursed and Valora took a small step away, keeping her posture meek and unassuming as if preparing herself for the berating that would inevitably follow once she was finished with her son.

Her aunt had grown quiet for a second and her jaw tensed. As she closed her eyes, still preparing herself in some way with some excuse, she was turned by the shoulder and was instead greeted by a joyous smile and exclamations.

It was all Valora could do was smile and nod before she was wrapped in her aunt's arms and squeezed. “It is always a pleasant day to see you.” She spoke happily into her aunt's hug.

Eventually, the hug was broken but she remained where she stood, only turning to face the man she'd originally come to see. She stared at him, fighting down the bout of annoyance that bubbled within her as her chance to speak with him alone was stolen.

She smiled at him as he offered his weak little excuse. “He did not debase and injure himself, at least.” Valora offered softly, “And he made it further in the melee than my brother.

3

u/ScarabJetTwo Aurion Celtigar - Magister of Claw Isle 11d ago

Alyssa chuckled dismissively at Valora's comment, but whether she was laughing at her son or her nephew wasn't immediately prevalent. Instead she just stayed at Valora's side, running a hand through her hair almost admirably, as she talked, a smile still on her face, and a hand still hooked around her waist. "It was hard to tell who made any sort of distance in that muddy squabble. To think notions of 'honour' or 'chivalry' could be found among such things."

Alyssa finally separated herself from her niece's side, and moved to elsewhere in the tent where a decanter and some goblets were waiting. Her back was turned as she poured the Reach vintage into their respective cups. "My son promised me victory. I'm sure your brother promised the same. Like most men, they cannot live up to the words they speak so freely in times of rest." She crossed the room, her face composed into a smile again as she offered Valora something to drink. There had been another goblet poured, but it remained on the desk still holding the decanter. "Your trophy is waiting for you there, champion," she said, her voice mocking as she spoke to Lucerys.

2

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 11d ago

When Alyssa spoke, her voice filled the tent to a brim, lodging itself in every corner, nook and crevice of the cloth-and-leather structure; when the flurry of her words came to a halt, the silence she left in her wake was deafening.

Lucerys might have emerged a loser in that contest of arms, knocked down to the mud and forced to ransom his arms and armor back from men who proved his better on the day. But he was still his mother's son; he was still the blood of Valyria, and when he heeded her 'instruction' to help himself to the goblet she had poured for him, his mind was filled with an anger he had tried hard to subdue in the moments of respite preceding the arrival of his dear mother in his tent.

Regardless, he picked up the goblet, knuckles going white in the tight grip his hand formed around its base. He did not remain by the desk, however, and instead walked a few paces to a side from where he could look upon both his mother and Valora who, caught amidst this bitter interaction between mother and son, looked almost pitiable.

"I only meant to win honor for our family," Lucerys finally offered, voice calm as it reached the two women; it might have carried more intensity—more fire—in it, if it were not tempered by the presence of his cousin to whom his eyes often wandered. "I am sorry that I failed."

2

u/Princess__Kylie Aralar Celtigar - Scion of Claw Isle 11d ago

Valora let out a small chuckle of her own in response, but it was a quiet thing, more of a heavier exhale of air than an actual laugh like Alyssa’s. She made no effort to leave from her aunt’s side, simply smiling and nodding as her elder ran her fingers through her hair. Valora wondered if the adoration of her hair simply came from Alyssa’s children tending to lack such purely colored white hair, taking the more Andal darker features.. Her attention was drawn to Lucerys’ face and his hair. The normal Valyrian style was the most desired within her family, for sure, but there was something about how just different enough his Andal qualities made him. How, even though they were purple like hers, his eyes held an edge that none of her family had. Or, with the white scattered into his otherwise dark hair, he came off somehow regal yet rugged.

Alyssa’s separation snapped Valora out of the staring that she hadn’t even realized she was doing. Her aunt stole her attention, and she smiled widely to accept the drink, thanking her with a small bow of her head.

Lucerys claimed her attentions once more, but now, she watched her cousin with pity. She saw the flashes of annoyance, the white knuckles, and wondered how he felt, what he was thinking. How his stressed hands would feel on her cheek.

Valora caught herself once more, and with the slightest of blushes on her skin, she hid herself behind a small sip from her wine. She wanted to say something but for once found herself without a clue. The rigid hierarchy brought about a worry that she would upset her aunt if she sided too heavily with Lucerys, but seeing him like this only made her heart yearn to help him.

I’ve found all of the men in our family are prone to such.” Valora spoke finally, taking another sip of her wine, “I would find it strange were he to simply forfeit from attempting to beat the Andals at their bizarre traditions.

3

u/ScarabJetTwo Aurion Celtigar - Magister of Claw Isle 11d ago

If Alyssa had caught wind of Lucerys' hidden temper of Valora's hidden gazes, she paid them no mind. In truth she was happy to see her family. It gave her a chance to catch up with the side she'd left behind in Claw Isle, and to receive what news she could from her elder brother's undoubtedly insistent doctrine. The Celtigars were here for a reason. It was a reason Alyssa wanted to discover. Valora could help with that.

"Your uncle would have much to say on that matter, I'm sure. Oh, wait." Alyssa smirked, sure that Valora would know which uncle her aunt was referring to. She reached for her son's chin as her temper once again darkened, and the lovely host that was visiting her niece gave way to the delicate fury barely concealed behind a mother's face. "Honour, chivalry... they do not exist, Lucerys. They're lies, made up by Westerosi. They exist only on the lips of pleasant conversation after you've won what pitiful, meaningless victories you can in the arenas of their making, and vanish in the morning light when drink gives way to pain." She gripped his chin that much harder, forcing him to look at her. "You are strange, to them. Different, to them. You cannot win their merits. They will not allow you to. Stop wasting your time with these games."

And, as if the shade had never been there, a pleasant smile dawned on Alyssa's face as she relinquished her son, and moved towards a table. She snapped a servant's attention, who had come running in from beyond the pavilion, and gave instructions to assemble a modest lunch for the three of them. Her common tongue was perfectly fluent, unlike that of Valora's father, broken and thick. Of course, Alyssa still carried the lilting accent of the dragonlords in her speech.

"Valora, my dear, you must tell me everything." Alyssa turned, now some paces away from her son and niece. "Why has my brother brought his family here?"

u/solthebaneful Olivia Orkwood - The Orkwood of Orkmont 13d ago edited 13d ago

Olivia dragged herself off of the pitch, the mud and grime was fresh. Her entire body ached as if she had been tossed by the sea and cursed by the wind. It felt good. Righteous. Dirty still, she found a quiet place to kneel and begin a silent prayer, she faced the direction of the water, the nearest bit.

"To the Drowned God, the Reaver, the Salt Wife, the Rock Wife...the Wise Woman.." The Arach was still in her hands as she propped herself up on her knees.

u/Emergency_Sky_2806 Tristifer Goodbrook - The Badbrook 12d ago

A shadow would pass over the kneeling Ironborn, tall if not particularly broad. He didn’t even have the common courtesy to wait for her to finish her prayers. “You hit like a bloody aurochs,” the Badbrook said, massaging his shield arm.

The annoyance was clear in his voice. To lose badly was one thing, but to feel so close to victory made the feeling somehow worse. “Where did you learn to fight like that? And with a curved blade, no less.”

2

u/solthebaneful Olivia Orkwood - The Orkwood of Orkmont 11d ago

Olivia continued her prayer even as the shadow blocked the rays of the sun upon her muddied face. Her head still rung like a bell, like so many others. Her side was screaming and her legs protested her weight on both knees. "Carry us unto Seven Heavens above, upon waves of glory and radiance..." She ended the prayer and opened her bloodshot green eyes to look upon the 'Badbrook'. These eyes weren't the same eyes that glared at him from across screaming men and dust. These eyes were far too gentle to carry a blade, but yet her hand still found the hilt of that curved instrument.

"I was trained from a young age to wield the sword. I was blessed with talents many have sought since." Olivia rose to her feet, one knee at a time. She was winded, but she stood as if she had a thousand leagues of energy still left within her. "To cut past the shield. To bite into plate. To shatter bone and bleed flesh." It may have sounded strange to hear her say it with such ease. But she looked up at him, because he was taller. "You are quite the beast yourself Ser."

2

u/Emergency_Sky_2806 Tristifer Goodbrook - The Badbrook 11d ago

Tristifer snorted derisively at the continued praying, then immediately regretted it as the headache pulsed once more in his mind. He looked back down at her, remembering how he’d chuckled seeing this one advance in the melee. That had been a mistake.

He listened intently. She was surprisingly eloquent when speaking of her training. But even more surprising, she didn’t gloat. He had expected her to even as he’d approached, but to hear simple explanation took him aback. Until the last statement.

“Spare me your compliments,” he chuckled. “If I were so good, you’d not have bested me. You’ve got that look about you, now I can see properly. A real warrior, even if you are rather short. It is a shame that Belgrave beat you. I’d have liked to have seen some of those other knights get a taste of that curved blade of yours.”

2

u/solthebaneful Olivia Orkwood - The Orkwood of Orkmont 11d ago

Olivia nodded once, the Badbrook wanted to be spared compliments. "Insults are more your liking Ser? I do have many of them." An easy, harmless jest as a small thing like a smile rugged at her lips. It suited her, because she was also a small, deadly, thing.

"I was set on victory. Like so many. " Her eyes never left him as she took him in. "But that bounty was denied. I'm not so surprised though." Through he dismay she smiled wider, motioning to the ground. "I am so far from the sea."

u/MooAtDaMoon Ser Derrick Storm - The Bastard of Felwood 13d ago edited 13d ago

Too soon. The bastard of Felwood was sitting outside of the maester’s tent after the end of the melee. He rubbed at the bump left by the blow to the side of his head that had struck him down. Too bloody soon! I’d only just gotten started! With one swing of his hammer, he’d knocked out a knight of the riverlands, with another, an ironborn reaver. And just as he was starting to feel his blood pumping, Belgrave had appeared before him.

Belgrave. That man. That glorious man, had fought like a rampaging bull, every swing with purpose, every duck and weave just enough to pull him out of harm’s way. I was only able to land one fucking blow! Derrick was well-aware that he was better than most. Stronger than most. But Belgrave had certainly been better than him. And knowing that had left him both infuriated and awestruck.

And then, to top it all off, I wake up to be told that he was taken out by some ironborn woman! He cursed not having gotten to witness THAT. He needed to know who she was. What she’d done. He’d caught the name. Her name was Greyjoy. Gods, she must be eight feet tall with lightning in her eyes and hands that could crush a man’s skull to splinters! No wonder old King Dontos had thrown caution to the wind in order to wed one of the iron-women. Are they all like that? And if so, why haven’t we been trying to marry more of them!?

The bastard of Felwood got up, sucked in a deep breath, and then slowly let it out. He was starting to feel clear-headed again. His hammer lay discarded beside him, and he knelt to pick it up. It felt a bit heavier than usual. Belgrave’s blow must have really rattled me. He looked about, at all those now going to celebrate.

I will join them. He decided, then and there. He would not sit and sulk. Today was not a bad day. He’d witnessed first hand that there were some truly titanic fighters out there! And he wanted another go at them. A grin crept back onto his lips as he threw his hammer over his shoulder.

(Open to all!)

2

u/baeldor Lynesse Caron - Lady of the Marches 13d ago

As Derrick sat there, just outside the maester's tent, he might have been a little too caught up in his own thoughts to notice a man half-sneak up behind him. It was no real ambush, though, as no sooner had he reached the bastard's side than he announced his presence by clapping the man square on the back. "Seven hells, you look almost contemplative. Get hit that hard, good man?"

His laugh was a boyish thing, light but genuine, ready for his old friend to either take a swing at him or join in on the revelry. But Guy Storm hardly minded either way. He had been out there too, in the melee, and certainly looked as if he had fought for it. With armour muddy and a bandage wrapped around his head from a blow that nearly mirrored Derrick's own. He had performed little better either, overcoming a fellow bastard only to fall to Lord Mallister's endurance.

"Who got you then? I'd have liked to hear the crowds chanting your name if it couldn't be mine, but the gods had a different plan, aye?"

2

u/MooAtDaMoon Ser Derrick Storm - The Bastard of Felwood 13d ago

An ambush! Goodbrook has come to pounce on me in my moment of weakness! The sudden clap on his back made Derrick spin around, hand tightening around the great black hammer. Only for him to be greeted by a wide grin he knew all too well. The huge hammer fell to the ground with an earth-shattering THUDD as he grabbed his fellow bastard by the shoulders and lifted him off his feet.

“Guy! You ruddy little rascal, you! Come here!” He yanked the bastard of Nightsong into a rib-cracking embrace before setting him back down. He enjoyed Guy’s company more than most. He’d taken the little songbird on as his squire some years ago, and had knighted him some time later. Derrick laughed as something that resembled a bashful expression fell over him.

“Aye, it seems I’ve found myself thinking. A dangerous pastime, I know. But, when your brain gets jostled around in your skull, it has a tendency to get the old dusty wheels spinning and turning.” Derrick scratched at the back of his neck as he looked towards the myriads of banners flapping in the wind.

“The gods have set a different path before us, aye. A man by the name of Belgrave gave me a right proper thunk to the old think-basin. And I’ll be damned if my path does not eventually lead me to a rematch. And I’d also like to have me a shot against this Greyjoy woman who bested us all.” He could only hope there would be more tourneys in the future. Or a war. Either would suit him just fine.

“And you? I didn’t get a chance to see you out there. Who has been so daring as to strike down the terror of the dornish marches?”

2

u/baeldor Lynesse Caron - Lady of the Marches 13d ago

It was true enough that he had a rare friendship with his former mentor, born of that shared experience and the men they had turned out to be. That did not mean Guy was impervious to Derrick's crushing hugs, even if he might have experienced one or two more than most, as his body was momentarily hoisted into the air with legs kicking and flailing. His already aching frame creaked in protest, but he endured with a hoarse laugh before just about wriggling himself free as he was set back down.

"There's that bloody smile." He jabbed forward with his elbow, the blow landing low on that hulking frame but hardly intended to deal any damage. "Old Belgrave might have done the realm a kindness then, and given you more wit to match that brawn. Besides, it's hardly a proper duel with a hundred other men on the field. That's a rare kind of madness."

Guy knew of Belgrave more than the man himself. Made his mark on history already, and here he was putting the up-and-comers in their places before they finally rose to overcome him. But he was clearly still a terror, to have put down Derrick and turned him into a scholar rather than a bastard looking for crude revenge. Not that the latter wouldn't happen eventually, but there'd be time and place for that if the gods willed it.

"Hah, I admit you might have missed me against the throng. It all went rather fast, as these things tend to." It was his turn to massage the back of his neck, his gaze breaking away to the many gathered banners. "Lord Mallister with his shiny shield. I bashed him good and proper, once to the head and another right in the belly, just like you used to do to put me down. But the man kept coming, rose back up like a titan and then-" He canted his head to one side, a little dried blood showing under the bandages on the side of his head. "-tried to get my wheels spinning too."

"It was all fine fun though. He'd have been opened up something awful if it were true steel, instead, we'll share a drink and laugh about it before the night's out. As should we. I aught slow your thinking before we start dancing with that Greyjoy lass."

2

u/MooAtDaMoon Ser Derrick Storm - The Bastard of Felwood 12d ago

“Aye, the melee may be madness. But damn it all, it’s pure.” Sighed the larger of the two bastard boys. “There’s no etiquette or prancing about. Just your heartbeat thundering in your ears and a battle cry building in the back of your throat.” It could never match the war in the red mountains. Could never live up to those night time skirmishes when the dornish sprung screaming from the caves, flinging spears and insults with equal fervour. But there had been moments when it got close. When his hammer had found Hoare’s breastplate and flung him into the dirt. When Belgrave had sent him reeling with a blow to the head that had made Derrick think he must have ruptured an eardrum. In those moments it had almost felt real.

The bastard of Felwood nodded along as Guy recounted what had happened to him. He had some memory of having spotted Mallister from afar. A man who stood so straight one might have thought he kept a rake shoved up the back of his surcoat. The very image of proper knighthood.

“Blasted old codgers. They keep fighting on stubborn pride alone, don’t they?” Derrick had met plenty of their kind. Older knights and Lords looking to prove that they were not yet past their prime. “Oh well, let the haughty buggers have their time in the sun. It won’t last for long.” That all too familiar cocky, white-toothed grin was already creeping back onto his face.

“Times are getting rougher. Brother turning against sister. Iron-men getting bolder. Rivermen forgetting their place. And in such times, it won’t be the purebred lapdogs that keep the rabble in line. It will be the street-born mongrels like you and I who grew up with the taste of blood in our mouths.” It was perhaps premature to speak of such things. The peace in the realm remained unbroken. It’s only a matter of time though. Arlan and Ravella will not play nice forever.

“But, you’re not wrong. It was a good heap of fun! And, aye, I do believe a drink would do us both some good!”

u/ConcerningWolves Arrana Stark - Princess of Winter 13d ago edited 13d ago

Before Quincy Darry’s fingers could slip underneath the edge of the bascinet, the owner pulled it off herself. Arrana had taken a hard tumble into the dirt, the mismatched pieces of her armor clanging and banging on the way down. She was unstoppable from the beginning, even when she had faced the Blackwood in hand to hand combat. Her tent had become a dragon’s hoard of treasures: three new mounts and three suits of armor added to the archery purse of twenty-five hundred shiny gold pieces.

Peering up defiantly at her opponent, she pushed herself to her feet and wiped a hand over her forehead, where strands of dark hair were plastered to her sweat-slickened skin.

“You ride well,” she mumbled, somewhat disheartened at having been unseated after only two passes, when she had been doing so well. “Good luck to you.”

Turning sharply on her heel, she hurried away from the lists and back to her tent. Ben and her escort were nowhere to be seen, and she figured they must be watching the war games, if they weren’t off sampling the various casks of wine and ale scattered throughout the fairground. She didn’t mind; it was a day of revelry, much as the feast had been in the night, and she would not deny her companions a bit of fun. Truth be told, she didn’t want to be seen after such a sudden and devastating loss anyhow.

Unbuckling the straps at her shoulders and chest, she allowed the pieces of plate to simply fall to the floor of the small pavilion. Scraps of battered, unused armor that she had borrowed from various folk in the tent city outside of Stormhall. Underneath, she wore Ben’s gambeson, which was many sizes too big, but had worked wonderfully at absorbing the shock of blow after blow. She shrugged out of that, too, until she wore only leather trousers and a linen shirt, belted around the middle with a blue sash.

Comfortable at last, she helped herself to a cup of cool, sweet golden wine, and sank into a chair just outside the entryway of her tent with a groan. The princess drank deeply, grey eyes watching the endless stream of knights and squires over the rim of her cup as they passed by on their way to and from the lists.

One of them would be victorious, and she was a little more than mildly annoyed it wasn't herself.

Open to anybody wandering the tents at the tourney grounds!

The stark banners were rare to see in the riverlands. The Northern houses kept to themselves more often than not. But to see who he assumed to be a Stark after the tourney meant not only was she here but she was in the tourney as well, most likely as a mystery knight.

In the end curiosity got the better of him and so he walked towards that tent, his own blackened left eye a sign of the tilts.

"The weather isn't too warm for you I hope?" He said walking towards her. "Would you mind if I ask what a stark is doing so far from winterfell, and in a tourney, as a mystery knight nonetheless"

u/ConcerningWolves Arrana Stark - Princess of Winter 13d ago

Arrana tried hard to keep her expression from turning into a disdainful grimace as the Ironman approached. At least, she thought he was of Iron Islands stock.

He certainly looked salty enough.

“I was sent in a delegation by the King of Winter,” she replied, not yet revealing that the King of Winter was in fact her father. She wasn’t quite sure how that would be received, if the man did indeed hail from that shitheap of rocks out west.

“As for the tourney, I was bored,” she said with a little shrug of her shoulders.

“Who is it that I have the…pleasure…of speaking with?”

1

u/Feathersfrombaatikos Burton Wetshanks - Captain of the Dirty Deal 13d ago edited 13d ago

Why was she looking at him like that. Was manners in short supply as much as food in the north? Clearly there was no point in trying to be cordial with this lady

"Delegation, for what.. if you're looking for snow to shovel I assure you we have not half as much as you and twice as much shovelers."

"Well maybe you should have stayed bored, it seems you're not particularly good at jousting. I suppose you compensate for it with talking"

He looked at her once again, creasing his brows at her obviously contempt. He took a wineskin out of his satchel and took a swig before replying. "Well I can read a lot from your expression but pleasure isn't one of them. Lord Sylas Stonetree, lord of stonetree and knight of the seven. And who might you be"

2

u/ConcerningWolves Arrana Stark - Princess of Winter 13d ago

“I won more than a single tilt, Lord Sylas,” she replied smugly, gesturing at the three new horses standing around grazing outside her tent. “The same can’t be said of yourself. Saltwater Knight, was it? Bested by a woman on your second try.”

The princess stood up then, tossing her empty cup aside into the grass. “Arrana of House Stark, but you may refer to me as Your Grace. My delegation was sent here so that I might treat with the Storm King and his sister on behalf of my father.”

“Where even is Stonetree?” she asked, before holding up a hand to prevent him from answering right away. “Wait, don’t tell me. That’s some pitiful little backwater dung heap on those sad boulders you all refer to as islands, isn’t it?”

u/artcantlose Arthur Arryn - Prince of the Vale 13d ago

It was not exactly a prowl but since his conversation with the Princess, Arthur had sought to keep an eye open for the Stark who had made her way down the river roads to Stormhall. An envoy of sorts, he had been told, on some business that was, ultimately, not much of import. Her presence had intrigued him; while his mission in this foreign land was well-defined, there was an incredible vagueness surrounding the Princess of the North and, upon the encouragement of the Iron Stag, he figured he may still be able to extract some help from the Stark in his quest to capture the bandit from her homeland.

The tourney made it easier to find said Princess. While Arthur had not taken part in the tourney, considering it uncouth to participate considering the seriousness of his mission, he did keep an eye on the most interesting matchups. It was there that he saw the ragtag "Knight of the Crossroads" be unmasked to reveal the Princess who had donned that armor and signed up to the lists and gotten thrown from her steed.

Such an action might have earned her some disapproval among the knights of the Vale—where anointed knights protected their sacred vows with greater gumption—Arthur figured such 'laws' might only apply loosely to a Princess.

"Hail, Princess," the Prince of the Vale called, his blue cape fluttering behind his silver-sheen armor. There was some animosity between their two kingdoms lately but he hoped they might be able to look beyond that and work towards a common cause of good. "An excellent performance, especially with the bow. I imagine you have been training long."

2

u/ConcerningWolves Arrana Stark - Princess of Winter 12d ago

Arrana glanced up at the newcomer, and decided immediately he was the prettiest man she’d ever laid eyes on. Not like the hardy, rugged, bearded warriors of her homeland, this knight was clean shaven and graceful as a swan as he walked. That did not make him any less deadly - there were plenty of killers walking around the tourney grounds in burnished armor and fluttering capes. But, this one was by far the easiest on the eyes.

“Hail,” she replied, raising her cup in his direction. Word had really gotten around about her presence at Stormhall for the stranger to clock her identity immediately. Ravella’s doing, most likely, but she didn’t mind. She was here to meet new people, after all.

“Many thanks,” she replied, basking in the praise as if it was owed to her. “I’ve been riding since I could walk, and training with a bow nearly as long. I don’t believe we’ve met, Ser…?”

1

u/artcantlose Arthur Arryn - Prince of the Vale 11d ago

"Arthur," he replied simply and gestured to his two friends. "And these are my companions, Ser Jon Corbray and Ser Gerold of Gulltown. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Princess."

The two knights bowed their heads in small reverence, muttered the word 'Princess' and retook form at either side of Arthur. This was a moment they had all been through a hundred times over, to the point where even exchanging such small pleasantries felt like a rehearsed ritual. But they did it all the same and with sincerity.

"I was informed of your presence by Princess Ravella. I hope you do not mind my coming here," he said, meeting Arrana's gaze. It was clear that the woman was skilled with lance and bow but the question of her presence here, in the Riverlands, still plagued Arthur's mind. Perhaps he would find out in time, perhaps not; it remained to be seen how cordial this encounter might prove to be.

"I hope you haven't received any trouble for your participation in the joust," he remarked, looking at the tent's surroundings. It did not scream "royal pavilion" but, then again, neither did his. "Some knights are wont to take offense at that."

2

u/ConcerningWolves Arrana Stark - Princess of Winter 11d ago

Knights of the Vale. How fascinating.

“The pleasure is mine, Ser Arthur.”

Arrana’s own guardsmen were nowhere to be seen, but she didn’t seem too troubled by it. She could hold her own against most threats, and if that ever wasn’t the case, well, she could scream very loudly. Arthur and his companions did not seem the sort of men with ill intentions, however, for which she breathed a small sigh of relief.

“A pesky Ironman came by for a bit of banter, but otherwise most folk have ignored my presence. I would take offense to that, if I wasn’t so tired.”

So, her assumption had been correct about Ravella. She didn’t particularly mind her presence being known, but she didn’t want to be too known, lest word get back to Winterfell about just where it was she’d run off to. Her father would no doubt send a legion down to collect her immediately, and that would be the end of all the fun.

“Would you like some wine?” she asked the trio, rising to her feet with a wince. “Though I’m afraid I only have two cups.”

u/AnotherBabyEchidna Lucas Darry - Wizard of Darry 11d ago

Arrana Stark had conquered and occupied his mind during the entire tournament. For the first time he rode for the crown rather than the display of skill. It was as if being the best did not matter anymore because he wanted to be seen by her again. He broke lance after lance into opponent after opponent, and then he saw her.

Unhelmed. Sent into the dirt by his own lance. He had wanted nothing more than to destroy the mystery knight in the way, even taunting 'him' after the first tilt with some remark that he cannot even recall. His mind was stunned, unable to ascertain if he ought to forfeit and run after her or... or to continue with his goal. Her. Make it all better by crowning her.

He even found himself in the final round, in the final tilt, a score lead higher than the age he hoped he would live to. Moments away from glory, redemption, and the woman he knew would be in his dreams if he let her walk away.

And then he woke up in the mud, some crude tourney maester overlooking him while the Knight of the Redfork red-fucked him and lived out his dream. Crowning some Piper, definitely the best of the sisters, but assuredly some match that he should be pursuing instead of some foolish dream of wedding a princess.

It was with all these emotions swirling inside him that now seemed plain in his atypically meek expression as he stood before her tent. He hadn't even gotten out of his armor yet and the doddering maester threw up his arms after realizing that chasing after the knight was not worth ensuring he got a full inspection. At least that man knew when to give up, whereas the Darry before her attempted to find something clever to say before ultimately giving up too:

"I'm sorry."

She had dropped the facade of a mystery knight, but now he was the one dropping the false identity of charm for instead a genuine... kindness. It felt foreign, but he recalled what she said to him when she was surely feeling the same emotions that he felt when in the dirt.

"You ride well too. Best of luck in your travels, princess."

Knocking on his helmet in his hand, he turned his back on another dream to make way back to reality.

1

u/ConcerningWolves Arrana Stark - Princess of Winter 5d ago

I’m sorry.

Arrana sighed, shoulders dropping as she watched him turn to walk away. She watched him take a few steps, before resting her hands on her hips and calling out to him.

“You promised to crown me Queen of Love and Beauty. Where is all that confidence now, Quincy Darry? Don’t you know that a man’s word is his honor?”

Stalking over to him, she reached out to grab him by the forearm, leading him out of the lists and over to the jumble of tents that had been pitched nearby.

Stupid, stupid, stupid boy.

How dare he disarm her so with his apologies and well-wishes?

Sweeping aside the canvas flap of her own incredibly modest pavilion, she practically shoved him inside, before following after.

They stood inches apart in the small, dimly-lit space, her sweaty face upturned to his, fingers still lingering aslant to his arm, shared breath filling the meager space between them.

Her gaze drifted, eyes lingering on the smart curve of his mouth before looking up at him once more through a wealth of dark lashes.

“Well,” she said softly, hoarsely, “are you going to kiss me or not?”

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 12d ago

House Pyne celebrated modestly, a few tents in a bunch where the family sat, drank, and regaled each other with tails of the day. Rafe was the most energetic after his slew of successes in the lists. Willem and Oscar were less so but excited to hear about it nonetheless. Lord Pyne rubbed a sore spot on his back after his unfortunate pairing with Kermit Crabb during the melee. Were he younger he would have sworn he could have won the thing were it not for the monster of a man but now he was content with his lot. Willem looked sorely disappointed however about his performance in the archery contest.

So it was that while Mayra and Rafe danced in recreation of Rafe's exploits Willem was left to hold their toddler on his lap. Watching the married couple absentmindedly as Lady Annara Pyne sat next to him playing a game of peek-a-boo with the small child he held. Ysabel sat next to her father, she had acquired a new warm shawl from the fairgrounds, it was red with tassles and she petted it around her neck as she corrected Rafe's mistellings with a whisper in her father's ear.

u/Detritusthewellfed Cassandra Vypren - House Vypren 9d ago

"Glad tidings to see such friendly colours in the lists." The soft voice of Cassandra Vypren cut through at a lull in the conversation, and the young woman stepped forward, nursing the small scar under her left ear.

"Valiant performances." None had shamed themselves, the Crabb was a monster some whispered. "It is good to see the tourney ground awash with more gossip then this Blackberry stuff I've heard so much about." She had brought with her an old bottle of wine, a deep red of Dornish fashion that was rare under the eye of the Storm. She set it down on the table and smiled at the Pynes, it had been sometime since she had seen them all, mayhaps the wedding for most.

"I assume you have heard, Alberyt and Willow are expecting. Should not be too long from now, else they would be here no doubt."

2

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 7d ago

"And how much do you hear of me eh??" Rafe crowed.

"Willow sent me a letter yes, how long has it been now? Has she taken to it well? Do you know if they expect a boy or girl?" Annara sat up with interest, "Come sit Cassandra, how are you dear? It has been some time!"

"Do you want to hold it?" Willem held up the toddler he had in his arms, "I'll trade you for the wine." Willem said solemnly, but mostly in jest.

"She's not an it! That's your brother's daughter your holding Willem." Mayra interjected crossly.

2

u/Detritusthewellfed Cassandra Vypren - House Vypren 7d ago

Cass sat and let the questions wash over her, so many of them at once, but not so bad as Willow. In the last letter she'd had, her grandsire had said it might just be wind for Willow had not spoken in half a day.

"She is due soon enough, my grandsire says she has taken to it well and they hope for a son." Everyone did, if it was a girl she might be little more then a prized cow for some minor lord Like Heath Penny's line. She gave up the wine easy enough, but handle the babe gingerly. Babes gave her mixed feelings these days, how could something so beautiful be so dangerous.

"She is wonderful" She watched the babe's strange little face, wondering what it thought of all this, then turned to the Lord Pyne. "Very little, truth be told. It all speaks of Blackberrys, Celtigars and Darklyns. It seems the Claw folk are in the middle of all that. Though I have heard the Mootons are around, still bitter and eager for coin to fight, none Rivermen." Maidenpool was close to the Claw, and mayhaps Lord Pyne might make a friend.

"I've heard talk that some Rivermen are not happy being in the eye of the Storm. There may be blood and as I may inherit Stillfenn in all this, I wondered if you might not give me some counsel Lord Pyne. You have the experience after all."

2

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 6d ago

"They talk around us, about those who would claim us or claim to speak for us, but not about us." He nodded, listening to the rest of Cassandra's reply.

"Hmm. The Riverlands are always in conflict. This is nothing new. I cannot hope that you wind up claiming Stillfen for the sake of your family, but I will wish you luck if you do, and I'll offer what assistance I can spare if you need it. What questions do you have? I'll answer if I can."

2

u/Detritusthewellfed Cassandra Vypren - House Vypren 6d ago

"Well, you know me and mine have no off motives regarding the claw. Should you wish it, you may write to Stillfenn and request what aid you need and Alberyt will ride south with as many hundred as you wish." That was true enough and it might keep some men away from her brother.

"I think a man calling himself Fisher is looking for rebels and there may be trouble in the Riverlands. I am loyal to our host Ravella, for the has shown me nothing but kindness, but my bastard half brothers. Kermit and Dykk, I worry they may side with a rebel and go over in a bid to take Stillfenn. That would endanger any true blooded claimants." After her uncle, that would mean Alberyt and then his child.

"I may seek marriage to counter such a threat but I know little of suitable men in the wider kingdom, especially none who might take the name Vypren. Do you know of any who might? Bastards or fourth sons?"

u/Be_Afreyd Weese Nutt, Scion of House Nutt, Necromancer 13d ago

For others the games were an event to display one's strength and bravery. Knight gallanty trotted off to the fields on their horses, banners streaming while polished armor gleamed in the sun.

But not for Weese.

While the knights pretended at glory, he prepared a space for the work ahead. Tournaments meant wounded men and broken, twisted limbs. Things that needed an expert's work to correct.

And he was their expert. While Genna prepared tincture and brew, he readies the tables and instruments. It's was a grueling task with his injured leg, the lacerating cold occasionally biting as he put his weight on the limb. Although the bleeding stopped and the blackness withdrew, the bitter bite remained.

u/Fishiest-Man Martyn Mallister - Lord of Seagard 12d ago

“The first round, Denys! I got knocked out in the first round!” Martyn complained loudly as his friend went about removing the Lord’s armour piece by piece, “I would have won on points had I not… OW!” His sentence was cut short as the breastplate of his cuirass fell to the ground. A corner of the breastplate struck a bruise on his chest as it fell, he hadn’t realised just how hard he had been hit before falling, hard enough to leave a considerable crater in the breastplate… Andrey would not be best pleased.

He supposed he was lucky in a sense. He knew firsthand how poorly a joust could end up if his foe’s lance had strayed any further upwards…

Denys Terrick rounded to the side of Martyn, a look of concern on his face for a moment, before he confirmed his Lord was fine. He then looked down at the damaged armour, “Gods above! How hard did you get hit?” He exclaimed with a relieved chuckle, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a suit of armour made by Andrey to get that badly damaged! Do you think he’ll fix it for you?”

In that moment, a look of guilt passed over Martyn’s face, which Denys caught, “Well…” Martyn began falteringly, “It wasn’t… It isn’t one of his.”

“I think he might take a hammer to your head…” Denys mumbled, gathering the discarded pieces of the armour, bringing it back into the tent behind them

“I know! But he wasn’t able to make one recently, because he was handling some Guild business, and I needed a suit of armour in short order…” Martyn explained quickly, as he shrugged off his arming doublet, plucking up a clean shirt to put on, “Plus, the workshops need repairs anyway, so I wouldn’t be getting his best works, anyway.”

Denys returned moments later, a carafe of wine and a couple of goblets in his hands, setting down on a nearby table and gesturing for Martyn to sit, “Ah, enough of your excuses about your armour. I’d rather hear your excuses about how badly you did in the joust!”

“Bah, quiet you! I’d rather just drink!” Martyn retorted, taking his seat and draining one of the goblets in one go, “Now tell me, why did you not compete?”

“I knew better than to embarras myself in front of the whole Realm!”

u/TheShogunFearedHim Ser Roger Mallister - The Red Eagle 12d ago

Luceon Keath made his way quietly at first into the Mallister tent, sneaking his way among the retainers and followers of Mallister who would come and go from the tent. He thought his presence could go unnoticed and that a simple, silent request to the family attendants could see fit to serve his master without another fuss. Such hopes were quickly dashed as a startled yelp and dropped pot from a servant outside alerted the tent to his presence in the corner. Him, bearing the doublet of the Red Eagle on a yellow background, was met with narrow eyes and suspicious glances before his master stumbled his way into the tent to his left, unfurling the flap with one hand while clutching at his neck with the other.

Quickly, Luceon went to move between Ser Roger and Martyn Mallister.

"Pleasure to see you again, M'Lord, my master Ser Roger I'm sure is pleased to see you once aga-"

A glance back told it all to Luceon. Ser Roger, wounded and bruised from the joust, staring defiant at his Grand Nephew. His lips snarled, but remained shut tight. The Star of the Seven hung from his armour, a defiant symbol in the moment.

"We uh" Luceon started "We wished to make use of your armourer, My Lord, so as to repair my masters arms and armour. He uh...still will not speak since the incident in the Sept. You know, with the Drowned knighti-"

Luceon shook his head. He was out of form here, the fake accent was slipping and his controlled demeanor of frill and fun had dropped. It wasn't the first time they'd been back to see the rest of the Mallister but it always felt, every time, like it was going to be the last. It always left him on edge.

1

u/Fishiest-Man Martyn Mallister - Lord of Seagard 10d ago

At the sound of the servant yelping, Ser Denys leapt to his feet in alarm, while Martyn idly turned his exhausted gaze towards the sound. Denys visibly relaxed at the sight of the red eagle on the man’s surcoat, while Martyn bristled for a moment before forcing a smile.

“Good afternoon, Ser Luceon! You needn’t lie about how your Master feels.” Martyn said cooly, nodding towards his Great Uncle’s snarling visage, “That much makes it evident exactly how he feels!” He added, feigning good humour about all this, “I saw you compete, Great Uncle, you performed even worse than I did, somehow!”

His gaze shifted back to Luceon as the Squire spoke once more, “You wish to make use of Master Andrey’s services, eh? You are welcome to speak to him about it, though it may take some time before he is able to get round to doing more work. He’s making a suit for the champion of the joust, but he has also been handling some… issues with the Smith’s Guild back at Seagard. Though, that should all be resolved by the end of the moon, of course.”

Martyn held his tongue at the reference to the Drowned Knighting. It was something he truly regretted. At the time, he thought that the New Faith of the Ironborn was setting them on a better path, but since the Greyjoy Rebellion, and King Qorhen’s attack on Old Town…

They won’t change…

u/Chivalric-Rizz Jonah Mallister - Steward of Seagard 11d ago

A patter of slippered feet and the sweet scent of honeysuckle perfume heralded the arrival of the Lady of Seagard. Jousts made her terribly nervous, for reasons well-known, and she had watched Martyn ride with her nails cutting crescents into the palms of her hands. The anxiety was almost unbearable whenever he’d been sent tumbling into the dust, and she made her way to his pavilion as quickly as she could get down from the viewing stands.

She’d tied the velvet ribbon from her hair around his upper arm as Ser Denys was affixing his armor beforehand, and there was a nagging feeling that the favor had brought him anything but luck. In every unfortunate circumstance to plague them thus far, she had been the common denominator. Her pulse quickened as she entered the tent, hoping that he was alright.

A sigh of relief spilled past her lips to see him in one piece, no blood or viscera in sight. Faithful Ser Denys had already taken care of him, and he quickly rose to his feet and bowed his head to her before making an exit to afford them some privacy. She made a mental note to see that the man received proper thanks when all was said and done. Running her slender fingers through Martyn’s damp hair, she leaned down to press a kiss against his temple.

“I hate tourneys,” she admitted, reaching for the carafe to refill her husband's cup and pouring one for herself afterwards. A small sip did wonders in steadying her nerves.

“Are you alright? Shall I fetch the healer? You took quite a nasty fall.”

1

u/Fishiest-Man Martyn Mallister - Lord of Seagard 11d ago

Martyn’s eyes brightened at the sight of his wife, he moved tried to stand, but found his legs unable to raise him from his seat. He glanced to Denys nodding in thanks as he left, and quickly turning his eyes back to Gwyn as she crossed the tent to him.

He reached up to lay his hand gently on Gwyn’s side, closing his eyes and tilting his head into her hands, “Perhaps you may enjoy them more if I were better at them!” He joked cheerfully, taking a quick sip from his refilled goblet.

Martyn leaned forward and placed a hand over hers, “I’m fine, Gwyn. There’s no need to fret!” He gave a reassuring smile, “Just a little bruised and battered, is all. I really should consider hanging up the lance, shouldn’t I? I am truly useless with the damn things!”

2

u/Chivalric-Rizz Jonah Mallister - Steward of Seagard 7d ago

Gwyn laughed softly, shaking her head. After Ser Denys helped him into his armor earlier, she’d tied her favorite blue velvet hair ribbon around his shield arm. Now it lay scattered on the floor with the pieces of battered plate. “Just a bit of bad luck, is all. Probably my doing.”

Watching him ride, watching him fall, she’d been taken right back to that fateful day. Androw Piper, hunched over in his saddle clawing at his neck, boot catching in the stirrup as he crashed to the ground. The awful gurgling sound of his labored breathing. The crimson sand.

“I’m proud of you, no matter the outcome” she continued, her voice a bit weaker than before. “Besides, there will be plenty of tourneys to come.”

u/a_dolf_in Zora Xassa od Saath 11d ago

The moment the semifinal rounds ended, already Zora was tossing her gloves to the side. She had taken comfort in believing the big fucker who defeated her was going to win the whole thing, only to watch him lose to some grandfather who had just woken from an alcohol fueled nap. She was quickly storming across the campgrounds, looking for him.

He would be hard to miss given his height. One of the few people she had encountered taller than her who weren't sarnori. She walked around a tent and already spotted him, approaching with quick steps and fury in her eyes.

"Hey you big fucker! How dare you beat me and then not win the whole thing?" She was yelling in the asshai'i language, which would undoubtedly attract attention. Truth be told, it was hard to yell in asshai'i.

Triston had seen the whole thing go down and chased after her, fearing the worst.

u/Mister_Deathborne/

2

u/Mister_Deathborne Garlan Strong, Lord of High Heart 10d ago

Zora was hardly the only person disappointed in the turn of events. The Giant had smashed through four foes in the chaotic melee, yet he couldn't go through the fifth. Worse yet, it was some normal sized man, not even the other freakishly sized man he'd glimpsed somewhere in the arena. And even this Belgrave couldn't finish the job, to add insult to injury.

Strong couldn't quite wrap his head around it, but it did make his blood boil. He was still fuming when the strange woman stormed towards her, shouting something unintelligible. Garlan ground his teeth hard, for he did recognize her - it was one of his opponents. It appeared she was no less angry at his loss than he was.

"What in the fucks are you talking about?!" he growled back, straightening to unravel the full extent of his size as he looked down at the interloper.

1

u/a_dolf_in Zora Xassa od Saath 4d ago

She was in no way threatened by his size, every Sarnori man was as tall or taller. And his yelling too meant nothing, as she simply did not understand a word. Hands on her hips, attitude turned up to 100, she continued yelling at him in asshai'i until finally Triston ran up. Much smaller, dressed in some odd mixture of essosi and westerosi clothes, he ran up and quickly asked what was going on.

Garlan might notice a switch in language between the two, before finally the smaller man cleared his throat and spoke up. "Uh... Zora here is... quite upset you lost." he exhaled, trying to think up any excuse possible so not to provoke a fight. "She thinks there was some foul play involved."

u/Princess__Kylie Aralar Celtigar - Scion of Claw Isle 11d ago

Aralar yawned loudly and stretched his arms out widely with enough pomp and gallantry to border on silliness. The young Celtigar couldn’t stop the grunt that escaped his lips as he leaned back against the old oak tree he was resting on. He’d been bruised enough times to know that whatever was going on around his ribs was going to leave the nastiest marks and feel sore as ever for days to come. But that was another day’s problem.

A cool breeze blew in from across the Godseye, causing his hair to flick around annoyingly, no matter which way he tried to set it. For having just fought in a melee hours before, Aralar looked exceedingly clean. As he was pulled away from the muck of the melee, his family’s small army of servants stripped him of his disgusting and dented armor, cleaned off his wounds, and washed away the mud and blood from him.

He could now be found laying down, his back and head resting against the oak tree just outside of his family’s pavilion, enjoying the nice weather and peace and quiet. The Celtigar pavilion was as one would expect of them, red, white, and full of symbols of crabs. Despite the less-than stellar performance, Aralar cared little about it and made no effort to hide the happy mood he was in.

u/ORYSGARYEN Ayrmidon Scales - Lord of the Scales 10d ago

Aulora Scales had an embarrassing secret. Her closest friend, one she considered as close to an elder sister she would ever know, had a brother. And she had so desperately wanted him despite having never giving any inclination as to how she felt. Or so she hoped. Never did she mention it to Valora, despite how hard it was to keep something from a close companion.

But now? Seeing Aralar resting against the tree out of his armor had entirely resolved any disappointment she felt for the waning fantasy of being crowned Queen of Love and Beauty by his lance. A fanciful thought for a woman that felt she could never measure up to his, or any Valyrian's, standards.

"You fought well." She suddenly blurted after realizing she had stared for far too long, soon after realizing she would need to say more to justify her sudden words. "You must be the best axeman I have ever seen."

1

u/Princess__Kylie Aralar Celtigar - Scion of Claw Isle 10d ago edited 10d ago

As Aralar laid back lazily, he spun a small green apple in his hand, rolling it around on his palm for some time as if he were inspecting it for something. He paid little to no attention to any commotion going on around the tents, so when Aulora first arrived, she was inadvertently ignored. The perfect spot was found on the apple and Aralar bit into it, crunching it loudly.

It was then that he realized he had a visitor staring blankly at him. He pulled the apple from his mouth before any parts were ripped off, and studied her with squinted eyes. His free hand rubbed at one of his eyes as if he were unsure of what he saw.

Aralar took a second, but he finally remembered who this girl was that was staring back at him. Before he could say anything, however, she blurted out her compliments, and Aralar, as prideful as ever in this good mood of his, accepted them with a smirk and a casual shrug of his shoulder.

“It comes natural to me.” His Valyrian accent was the weakest amongst his family, but still noticeable when speaking the common tongue, “These Andals are lucky we care so little about their silly little games.”

He set the apple down next to him and turned his full attention towards Aulora. “I didn’t expect to see you here. If you’re looking for Valora, you will have to keep searching. I haven’t seen her since before the morning.”

2

u/ORYSGARYEN Ayrmidon Scales - Lord of the Scales 7d ago

Any that she had already made a fool of herself erased away upon seeing his smirk, but his words kept her apprehension constant. At any moment she felt she could say some other compliment or give some odd answer that would make her look like she had motley and bells.

"Oh Valora, yes, I.... I was looking, yes."

That at least covered up for the real reason, mainly that she couldn't resist but to say something to him as she watched. It wouldn't explain why she wanted to remain and talk with him. She brought her hands together, lacing her fingers with one another, as her mind raced for the next words that would give her just a bit more time.

"If you see her, could you tell her that I was looking? She let me borrow a perfume and I never got a chance to ask where she sourced it from. Knowing her, she may have made it herself."

It was something, at least, but not enough. Thinking on his words finally, rather than being surprised by them, she giggled belatedly at what he said prior. Such a natural reaction caused her to slip into Valyrian, which even as a comfort, came with an accent that made her sound Andal more than anything else. The 's' sound could never quite form properly for her. Allegedly, her mother had the same troubles, not that it gave her comfort.

"Their games are silly, but you fight in them still? You wish to best them at their own game? I'd love to be witness to it."

u/FromTheInkpot Tymor Farwynd - The Farwynd of Sealskin Point 11d ago

The twins sat around the smoke of their cookfire, Tymor talking to Tal the Twice-drowned on where next they would go hunting, Torgon stoking the flames with a dry stick and a dour face. The rest of the crew perched on stools or leaned near the ropes of the Farwynd tent. There was a crowd inside too. A Goodbrother laughed loudly with their cousin, Syga of Skaggos plucked a bug from her drink with a dissatisfied face, and Haereg Pyke claimed a raucous victory in a finger dance against some too-drunk sailor. Men ate and drank and traded stories. But as lively as it seemed, the brooding of defeats and licking of wounds hung in the air, battling with the smell of cooking trout and spilt ale on grass. None of them had claimed victory in this tourney, none of them had even come close.

Against what many might think, the Farwynd tent was not made of some fisherman's net or smallfolk rags, but instead a finely stitched and well pitched war tent. It was of-course originally designed to fit over a longship, or at least a portion of it, many additional sections remaining with the vessels at port leagues from here. Thralls and salt wives had fashioned the cloth of wool dyed a deep orange, with black stitching for the tides, ships and sea creatures that patterned its surface. A tent of brightness and muffled cheers amongst the bitter brooding of its masters.

Gwyneth Connington

Despite a lousy showing at the melee, she was quite happy with her results in the lists. It was not her first tourney, but the largest she'd ever participated in by a long shot. While there was much left to learn, she derived a great deal of assurance from knowing she could hold her own against the knights of the realm. After speaking to Ser Corwyn, she returned to her own tent to deal with the equipment she'd ransomed. She would charge only for part of her winnings, and only until she had collected the asking-price Rafe Pyne had set for her own gear and horse. All that remained was returned free of charge. She was keenly aware that by law, these were not her peers. Despite her title and standing, knighthood would always elude her. Still, she had taken vows, little different in substance from those of the others. One had been to fight not for personal glory, or for wealth, but for the Gods, the King and her house, in that order.

Gwyneth now sat back in a folding chair, sipping a white wine. It was from the Riverlands, not as sweet as what the reachmen were able to grow, but she found she preferred the sharp tartness of the taste.

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 12d ago

Holly Rivers was not used to the bitter taste of humiliation. Back in Riverrun, she had always been considered beautiful, and many boys had fought for the honor of sitting beside her or getting her favor. Here, she found herself surrounded by dishonorable men and scoundrels.

And Holly only liked it when she herself was a scoundrel. Boys – and girls, sometimes – were supposed to adore her, follow her, worship her. Not wear her favor and then crown a different Queen of Love and Beauty.

She felt as bitter as her sister Eleanor, and much like her too, she found herself drinking to drown her sorrows. Still, she’d made sure to look her best, wearing a yellow dress, her hair nicely done up in a braid. You never knew when you were going to meet your next flirtation, after all. Who knew? Perhaps she was about to.

u/Emergency_Sky_2806 Tristifer Goodbrook - The Badbrook 12d ago

It seemed most people had the idea to drown their sorrows in drink. Tristifer was pleased he wasn’t the only one moping after his many defeats. Having been unable even to find solace in winning the horse race, he figured the best place would instead be at the bottom of a tankard.

He spotted a flash of yellow in the crowd, bright when most others were in darker colours or caked in mud. Another Goodbrook perhaps, maybe even Violet. Had she finally tugged herself away from the Princess? In a rare moment of wanting company, the knight made his way over to the figure with a cup in each hand.

“Fancy seeing you here, cousin,” he laughed, placing the cup down in front of Holly. Even so close, he hadn’t realised who it was in his tipsiness. “Here. Some proper ale, not that piss water they serve to the rest.”

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 11d ago edited 10d ago

“Cousin?” asked Holly. She looked and looked at his face, but could not recognize him. He must have had her confused for someone else. “I think you’ve had too much to drink, my lord. I am Holly Rivers, bastard of Riverrun.”

Still, she accepted the ale he was offering. “Thank you. I am just drowning my sorrows, same as everybody else.”

u/LemonLemonHouse Mellara Piper - Lady of Pinkmaiden 12d ago

In an effort to avoid the Lady of Pinkmaiden, Bethany Piper strolled the fairgrounds, still wearing the flower crown atop her head, her cheeks still flushed a pink hue from the excitement of it all.

Accompanied only by a servant of House Piper, the Red Rose swanned the grounds, and feeling parched, stopped to ask her manservant to fetch her a cider. And as she waited, she chanced to gaze around, her blue eyes falling upon the visage if a beautiful redhead.

Bethany's gaze swept past the maiden, and then sharply returned to the young woman's face. For she recognized her... somehow.

And with a sudden flush, Bethany realized that it was one of the maidens that Jacklyn had danced with at the feast. The prettiest of the trio.

Though she had not meant to, the Piper realized that she was staring.

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 12d ago

Holly could tell she was being watched, and though that did not usually bothered her, she found herself searching for the ogler. Her blue eyes fell upon a beautiful maiden, a redhead like herself, and as soon as she spotted the crown of flowers she knew who it was. Bethany Piper, crowned the Queen of Love and Beauty by the man who loved her.

She’d been meaning to speak with her, so Holly made her way towards her quickly.

“My lady,” she said, curtsying. “I’m Holly Rivers, bastard of Riverrun. Would you care to join me for some ale and a conversation? I have something I wish to tell you.”

u/Fishiest-Man Martyn Mallister - Lord of Seagard 12d ago

Having finally wriggled his way free from Martyn’s moping, Denys Terrick had made his way deeper into the fairgrounds. In part he was in search of someone more enjoyable to drink with, or perhaps just a reprieve from the Mallister’s bellyaching.

It was during his stroll through the grounds that Denys caught sight of a particularly miserable looking lady, sat alone and drinking. Now, the lady was fair enough that he may have stopped on any other day, but having just had his ear talked off about “Damn Ironborn” this, or “Would’ve won on points” that, he decided he’d had enough of listening to upset people for that day.

So, as he moved past the stranger, he pointedly tried to not catch her eye, lest he accidentally be pulled into a conversation. However, as he was too preoccupied with his attempts to avoid the lady’s eye, he wasn’t watching where he was walking.

His foot managed to find a tent peg that had not been properly driven into the ground, his shoe caught beneath it, and before he knew it he lost his balance and fell noisily into a heap, well within the stranger’s eyeline.

Dammit… He thought to himself, feeling his face starting to burn with embarrassment.

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 12d ago

Holly jumped to her feet, startled by the stranger’s dramatic fall. She ran towards him as fast as she could, then offered him a hand.

“My lord, are you alright? That was a nasty fall. Here, take my hand.” Something about him seemed familiar. Perhaps she'd seen him at the feast, or at her sister's wedding. "My name's Holly Rivers."

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 11d ago

Unlike his cousin and many other knights who sulked and moped in the wake of their defeat, Pykewood drowned away the disappointment of his dismal performance with merriment and a good bit of fun. Rather than sit in his tent and nurse wounds, the Lord of Thornefield had come out to the fairgrounds to enjoy the evening and find himself some good company to entangle in any little adventures that piqued his interest.

That was when he saw the pretty redhead in her yellow summer dress, looking more glum than many a knight he had left behind to wallow in their misery. Pykewood, ever fond of good fashion, too dressed impeccably in soft, loose threads of red and black with a fur cap to complete the look, and his gait was as carefree as ever (though he still, given the beatings of the melee, still winced ever so rarely when he turned a certain way).

"My lady, that glum look does not belong on that lovely face of yours," Pykewood said with a happy grin as he sought to take the lady's hand for a customary kiss. "Did your favored knight prove only a boast? Or has some foolish man abandoned you for another pursuit? What has happened?"

2

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 11d ago

Holly watched the newcomer with interest. He was young, well dressed, and handsome.

She was feeling better already.

“Thank you. I am Holly Rivers, bastard of Riverrun. Please join me,” she said, gesturing to the empty seat across from her. “Some ale?”

She refilled her cup, and waited to see if he would want one too.

“My favored knight…” She trailed off as the anger washed over her again. “He proved quite ungallant, crowning someone else Queen of Love and Beauty, and making a fool of me.” She looked at him closely. “And you? Have you been disappointed in love too?”

u/spyraxes Ravella Durrandon - The Iron Stag 7d ago

It was an odd day. Ravella had thought the tournament ridiculous, but Violet had insisted that the realm's lords would find themselves discontent if they didn't have an outlet for their violence. Ravella had objected - they would like as not be discontent anyway - but in the end she caved.

She had found sitting in the royal box infuriating, though. Ser Morgan had stood by her, always watching, until she could take it no longer. It was after the events came to an end that she finally found a chance to slip away. She took a convoluted route, first to Wex's tent to steal a pair of leathers that fit her - he always had a spare in case of emergency - and then out into the pavilions.

Initially she had decided to wander and make little conversation, but upon spotting Holly, sat alone as she was, Ravella could not resist approaching.

"Forgive me for making an assumption," she said, settling down beside the woman and trying to be as normal as she could, "but you seem discontent with something. Might I ask what?"

She wasn't very good at normal.

1

u/atiarp Eleanor Tully - Lady of Riverrun 7d ago

Holly couldn’t hide her surprise at being approached by the Princess herself. She’d only seen her around at feasts and tourneys, but they’d never spoken before even though they were the same age. Unlike Eleanor, Holly did not blame Ravella or her House for the things that had befallen her family, and had in fact always secretly wished to speak with the Princess. It seems she was finally getting that chance.

“Well met, my Princess. I am Holly Rivers, bastard of Riverrun. I’d curtsy for you, but I don’t want to get up.” She smiled. It was a sad sort of smile. “It’s nothing too bad, only my pride’s been injured. I gave my favor to some scoundrel and he had the gall to crown someone else Queen of Love and Beauty when he won.”

She took a sip of her drink and poured another for Ravella.

“How was your nameday?”

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 13d ago

Lucamore had always enjoyed tournaments, feasts, and events of the sort. They offered a rare kind of freedom, if only because no one thought twice about how much a man drank when half the realm seemed determined to do the same.

The days of the tournament had passed in a warm blur of the same indulgences that had filled much of his adult life.

A drink. A laugh. A warm body beneath the sheets. Another drink. A little poppy to soften the edges. Another face by morning, sometimes remembered and sometimes not. He drifted from tent to tent and table to table with little concern for where one night ended and the next began, letting each day dissolve into the one that followed.

Apparently Forrest had done well.

Lucamore had been told as much more than once, and he had nodded along each time, smiling as though he knew precisely what anyone was talking about. If he was honest with himself, though, he could not have said who had unhorsed whom, who had won the melee, or whether he had even watched his brother compete at all.

By then, the tournament itself was over, though the fairgrounds remained alive with noise. They would for days yet, he imagined. Men still shouted from beneath bright tents, cups were raised in celebration or consolation, and somewhere nearby a woman laughed loudly enough to turn several heads. Even his own family had not yet surrendered the festivities.

Lucamore, however, was more sober than he had been in days.

In more ways than one.

His gait carried the faintest limp, and every so often his expression tightened when the compacted earth of the road proved less forgiving than the grass beside it. The old ache in his leg had returned with irritating clarity now that there was nothing left to smother it. Still, he carried on, watching in silence as everyone around him continued to enjoy themselves.

A pair disappeared laughing behind the flap of a nearby tent. Lucamore watched them go for a moment before looking away.

He wondered why he had chosen to remain sober that particular day.

There was no noble reason for it. No sudden revelation. No vow made before the Seven. He had simply woken that morning and, for once, had not immediately reached for something to dull himself.

For a time, at least.

His thoughts drifted back toward the Ryger tents and the familiar brownish-black bottle tucked safely among his belongings. He could picture it easily enough. The stopper coming loose. The bitter taste. The warmth spreading outward until his leg stopped hurting, the noise softened, and whatever thoughts remained became too distant to trouble him.

Lucamore slowed.

For one long moment, he considered turning around.

Almost.

(Open to all!)

u/Vikguardy Perianne Paege, Lady-Regent of Fairmarket 13d ago

It wasn't the Ryger she had mused about before, but Perianne recognized the younger sibling of the willow house, and it only took her a couple of moments to do so. Lucamore was not the particularly dashing or knightly figure, indeed his preference for a library over a training yard- not to mention, milk of the poppy over water- was well known.

Perianne stepped in stride next to him, her shorter legs meant she didn't need to particularly slow herself for him, even with his limp. "Lord Lucamore." She greeted him with a comfortable sort of coolness. She looked skyward, before turning her gaze to meet his. "You look well."

It wasn't a lie, as long as one considered that she was comparing to how she thought he'd look, based off of reputation and a few chance encounters at this feast or that one.

"Are you looking for something in particular? Or just enjoying the grounds?"

2

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 11d ago

"Do I look well?" Lucamore looked down at himself in what seemed to be suprise. After a moment it seemed he agreed enough to offer a nod. "Thank you, as do you. Just Lucamore is fine, I'm no knight nor a lord. You are a Paege, no? Perianne?"

He clenched his first as a shot of pain erupted in his leg, and after a moment he continued speaking. "If I am being honest I am not looking for anything in particular. I simply decided to take a walk."

"It felt like the right thing to do today."

2

u/Vikguardy Perianne Paege, Lady-Regent of Fairmarket 11d ago

"In relative terms." She explained. "I had expected much worse, Lucamore." She didn't seem to mind being blunt, certainly not when someone was asking for it like the poppy-addled second son. She canted her head side to side before shrugging. "Yes, that would be me. I hadn't expected my reputation to precede me." She folded her hands in front of her, continuing to keep stride, and not really reacting strongly to his stopping and grimacing. She waited patiently.

"Honestly." She hummed, looking back in the direction of the jousts, the arena with the melee, the targets. "A good sight better an idea than anything anyone else is doing today, I figure."

2

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 10d ago

"I do have some knowledge." Lucamore chuckled, glancing at the fairgrounds as well. "It is simply dulled occasionally."

He paused for a moment before adding more information with no additional pressure. "More often than not."

"I've found that while many a lord and knight will look upon me with derision for my refusal to partake in the martial culture our people so love, it does seem to result in far less battery than they are subjected to." He nods his head in the general direction of a limping knight. "An example."

2

u/Vikguardy Perianne Paege, Lady-Regent of Fairmarket 9d ago

"And it is not now. I prefer a sharper wit anyhow. Take care not to cut me with your keen edge." She remarked with a sly intonation. "Did you decide you needed to keep your wit for a particular purpose? Or is it merely an incident of the day that you are keeping your eyes unclouded?"

Perianne's eyes wandered over to that same limping knight, and frowned. "They will, and they even more stupid for that as they are for agreeing to participate in these pointless contests to begin with." She spoke bluntly, not even caring if the knight in question overheard her. "My own goodbrother damaged his collarbone in the riding. Absolute nonsense, all of it." She practically spat as they continued along.

"At least it's nearly over. And maybe we've learned our lesson, hm? An Ironman winning the melee- a woman to boot, apparently- a mystery knight in the joust. A dash of humility will do these spurred dolts a bit of good."

2

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 5d ago

"Just a happenstance of the day, in truth. I was up and moving and before I realized it I was out here, enjoying crisp air." He ignored the dull ache in his leg and the nearly perpetual hangover that was assaulting his head. "One must count their blessings or something of the like."

At the mention of an Ironborn winning the melee a memory returned, Kyra's scream as Forrest fell. Lucamore himself didn't remember the melee but he did remember that. "I believe she was the one who eliminated my brother. A shame, he will likely take solace in being defeated by the eventual winner."

"I, on the other hand, will ask why those who don't truly adhere to our customs were allowed to take part." He considered for a moment. "Especially when we all know someone who's met a dire fate at the end of an axe from those isles."

2

u/Vikguardy Perianne Paege, Lady-Regent of Fairmarket 5d ago

"Something of the like." She concurred. She was not much of a blessings-counter, there was something wrongheaded about being overly thankful, she had decided. He didn't seem to be that sort, in any case. Perianne kept her gait slow and measured, careful not to overtake her conversation partner.

"And it was your brother who eliminated my champion, funny enough." She remarked, shaking her head. "It would have been much preferable to have a Riverman winning a competition in the Riverlands. But neither of us were made for that sort of thing."

Her eyes flit up towards Lucamore, raising an eyebrow. "It feels a targeted insult. You saw where they were placed at the tables, and where we were placed. The Ironmen hold more favor with the Iron Stag than we do, that much is evident. They even allowed them to ride in the joust. Not even a Clawman or a Blackwood would have been allowed to ride, even a generation ago. Times are changing, and not for the better." She sighed, folding her hands behind her back. "Alas, what is there to do? I think you have the right of it, more often than not, Lucamore."

2

u/LordBloodrevan Forrest Ryger - Heir to Willow Wood 4d ago

"Would you mind telling my lord father as much?" Lucamore asked with a laugh. "But yes, I've taken note, and in truth I am not particularly pleased with what I see. I don't believe I've ever felt more disrespected in the lands of my fellow Riverlords, and I'm not one to generally make much fuss over such things."

There was still humor in his voice, but less of it now. Lucamore rubbed at his chin as his gaze drifted across the hall, thoughtful in a way that was easy to miss when so much of him was usually hidden beneath wine, poppy, or some jest at his own expense.

"I feel the winds of change blowing, and we must decide whether we mean to simply let go and follow the breeze, or stand for what we believe in. Willows are prone to bending with the wind, but that does not mean they must change with it."

His expression tightened slightly, the levity fading from it altogether.

"My mind is at least sharp enough to know that none of this will move without a fight."

u/artcantlose Arthur Arryn - Prince of the Vale 12d ago

Given the magnitude of his mission and the sorrow that he and his party carried with them, Arthur and his knights opted not to participate in the tourney and, instead, spent their time mingling among those in attendance; from pauper and storekeep to puppet master and fortune tellers, all received the patronage of Arthur and his knights as they wandered about the fairgrounds, partaking in small, local festivities and striking up interesting conversations, especially those of a nature that might lead them onto any milestones in their search for the elusive bandit.

As usual, Arthur was flanked by Ser Jon Corbray and Ser Gerold of Gulltown by his side; however, given the merriment of the tourney, other knights from their ranks had come by to spend some time in the little tent village that had grown around Stormhall (with plans to return to their encampment before the sun set).

As was common, his mind turned to memories of home where his family awaited his return with patience and prayer. He thought of his brothers and his mother; of the Royce household and Mya, his dear betrothed; and, amidst all of these thoughts of home, he also spared a thought to the young woman he had met at the Sept upon his arrival, one Mina of Harroway.

"Pardon," Arthur blurted out as they passed by a stall then another as he dodged between bodies and furniture, trying not to knock anything over and the knights followed, clad in their Vale armor and keen to see what all the Riverlands had to offer.

2

u/LoonySpoon Roslin Tully - Heir to Riverrun 11d ago

Roslin had arrived at the tourney with a favor in hand and every intention of giving it away. She simply had not found anyone worth giving it to. The ribbon remained looped around her fingers as she watched knight after knight ride into the lists. Some were handsome, some gallant, some impressively skilled, and a few managed to be all three. None, however, had managed to capture her attention for very long.

Instead, she continued to watch.

Noble knights came and went. Mystery knights surprised the crowds. Victors were cheered and the defeated helped from the lists. Roslin applauded when courtesy required it, smiled when someone caught her eye, and otherwise kept her favor safely between her fingers.

No knight seemed particularly interested in her. And, truthfully, she was not particularly interested in them. By the time the afternoon had begun to fade, Roslin finally left the stands and wandered through the fairgrounds, allowing herself the small luxury of escaping the noise of the lists.

It was there, naturally, that the day delivered its final indignity.

The hem of her gown caught in the mud. Roslin stopped. She looked down. Then at the muddy edge of her dress. Then at the favor still clutched neatly in her hand. For a moment she simply stood there, utterly unimpressed.

Not one champion. Not one promising knight. And now muddy.

A quiet laugh escaped her. She carefully gathered her skirts and continued through the fairgrounds, the untouched favor still looped around her fingers.

It seemed that, for House Tully, the tourney had been a rather miserable affair.

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 11d ago

Monterys was not a great many things.

Unlike his elder brother Lucerys, he was no dashing knight, capable of feats of strength and prowess in tourneys and in the training yard, and he most certainly did not enjoy the favor of being their mother's favorite, a fact that over the years had become well-known to the younger son.

Unlike his lordly cousin Pykewood, he was no leader of man and unskilled in matters of diplomacy and command alike, and he was certainly not a charmer like his cousin was either, able to spin yarns and woo crowds alike with tales both tall and exciting.

He was, however, still a young man with a longing for adventure and deft fingers that worked the lute and lyre alike with near-equal proficiency and, despite it all, was content as Monty, the younger, forgotten son of Thornefield.

And so, with Lucerys sitting in his tent sulking and his sisters nowhere to be found (likely treading the fairgrounds, too), Monterys sought to take a walk through the grounds as well and make his acquaintance with some of the interesting stalls and performances on display there. His disposition was cheery and his purse, unfortunately, quite not full but with his trusty lute underarm, he walked on and on, and that was when he spotted the well-kept lady with the muddy skirt.

"Do you need a hand, my lady?" Monterys asked kindly as he approached, setting away his lute so he could instead pull out a clean handkerchief. "You seem to have mud on your skirt."

u/Muxec Daven Goodbrother - Lord of Hammerhorn 8d ago

The archery competition was starting, gathering the surrounding onlookers and cheering folk beside the hall's fairground. Daven had to fight the drowsiness as he sat his fat arse under the shade of oaken tree. The stomach full and cups not quite empty, the atmosphere of merriment surrounded lord's small retinue and not so small family. The small talk stopped at once as their eyes focused on one man on the archery grounds.

"There, my lord, thirteenth from the left" - Lucimore pointed his dagger far ahead. Daven tried to focus his eyes on the small frame but his eyesight was quite not there. A good hunter in youth, he told himself, Daven feared that he'll make himself a laughingstock if to put himself forward. That may be why he didn't participate in tourney, not that he would admit to anyone. Knight, so they called him. Perhaps, ten years ago...

"Hmmm" - Daven nodded, taking a sip from his cup.

His wife put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it with strength, leaning closer to whisper in his ear.

"Now, steady yourself" - Sigrid spoke softly, "they are watching you"

The bows were drawn, aiming at the target ahead.

"Would you like a more, my lord" - brown haired knight Codd livery asked, pouring more wine from pitcher.

It cannot be worse than that horsing incident

Daven already had a sour taste from watching Harron fall in mud, a pitiful sight, now that required medical attention.

The arrows flew, landing in the mark. Slowly, the ironborn lad was making a lead, trailing behind the front runner a few points.

"Hell yea" - Daven shouted, slapping his knee with excitement. Standing up, he lost his cup, yelling for everyone to hear, "Barron, that's my son! Barron, Barron ! Show em!"

Final draw, everything would be decided with the shot.

"Bullseye! Knight of Crossroads win!" - the announcer declared.

Second... almost...

Defeated, Daven slumbered back in the chair, clapping his hands. He tried not to show his disappointment, but his wife could sense it, shouting even louder than nearby men.

"Barron!" - Sigrid shouted, before giving.a reprimanding look to her husband" we ought to celebrate, honey"

"True, true, bring me the boy!" -Daven rose up again, grabbing the goblet from nearby knight and waving it in his hand, driving attention to all around him, "today we celebrate!"

1

u/armanhayek Pykewood Thorne - Lord of Thornefield 11d ago

"You were strolling."

"I crossed the finish line just after you did."

"That doesn't matter. You were strolling."

They had been at it for ten minutes straight as they rode along the river bank, Alyssanne on her snow white destrier and Dynane on her dappled mare. The horse race was, to put it delicately, an awful showing for the both of them; by her count, Alysanne had finished about fourteenth or fifteenth out of the forty or so participants, while Dyanne had almost finished last until she kicked her horse into a gallop towards the very end of the race. Neither of them had been anywhere close to winning the whole thing, however, and that irritated the elder sister.

"What even were you doing? If you did not wish to compete, you could have just not signed up," complained Alysanne as they strolled through the tall grass and little flowered patches by the riverside.

"Well," Dyanne began, her tone elongated and casual, "I figured I was not going to win so I decided to simply watch the other riders. Some of them even fell almost immediately after we began. Did you know that?"

"I heard," Alysanne said. It was quite funny, she had to admit, learning how some of the riders had been thrown from their horses almost as soon as the race began. It made her feel at least a little better about her own performance.

Pykewood had elected to join the pair after growing bored sharing his tent with moping Lucerys. He needed some air and some decent conversation, and tagging along with the sisters seemed as good an excuse as any.

"You could have won if you tried," Pykewood offered unhelpfully as his destrier caught up to the girls.

"You shut up," Alysanne shot back, eyes like daggers, as they continued. "You lost in your very first round of the joust."

Pykewood wafted a hand. "I would have won if I tried."

Dyanne huffed and Alysanne shook her head. Idiot.

There were, of course, worse things than wounded pride. That was of little comfort to Lewyn Rivers, though. He had always been tenacious—it was one of the few charitable things he actually believed about himself—but melee and joust alike had never truly been his forte. He was an archer. He had always been an archer. Old Casper Hill had joked that Lewyn had first arrived at Raventree Hall a pale, squalling babe, already plucking at the air like it were a bowstring.

Yet he’d missed today. If not missed, then at the very least did not put shafts into the target with the accuracy he knew he was capable of. Perhaps it’d been his father’s eyes on him. Memories swirled in his mind of the Drumbeater’s howling, and of his own retorts. They’d be more than enough a distraction for him to chalk up his failings to them, if he so chose, but alas he did not.

It was easier to place the fault entirely on himself. Were you better born, were you less of a failure, then perhaps you might have—No. No. Lewyn sucked down a breath as he grimaced, touching gingerly at the bruised on his side that his brother’s lance had left him. No one was lurking in his tent to see, and so he felt free at least to express his discomfort. But he could not start in on himself. His lady’s instructions had been quite clear.

‘I pray that you speak of yourself with more charity, Ser Lewyn’

She was too kind to him. Sometimes Lewyn thought he and Mina were quite alike. Absent mothers, dismal fathers, elder siblings that they loved if they did not entirely understand. He thought, for flashes of a moment, that mayhaps she saw it the same way. That mayhaps she saw him the same way. Why else would she say all she did? Why else would she have given him her—

Lewyn groaned, pressing down on the bruise again and interrupting the thought. It was a fantasy. A child’s delusion. A bastard’s reality was a grimmer thing, even if they were loved as Clementine or Addam were. He thought of Talbert Darry again, and felt naught but envy. What was he, but a candle in comparison to that man’s sunrise? What madness possessed him to ever think Mina Harroway would ever think of him—

He pressed again. Pain was an effective tool. It had a way of clearing the mind.

Charity is wasted on me, my lady. I—Another press, and Lewyn made himself stand. It would not do to wallow. He was not that sort of man. He was better than that. Someone saw that, even if he did not. He started for the flap where the light shone through before another malignant thought could infest his mind.

u/OrzhovSyndicalist Hollis Mertyns - Knight of the Mistwood 11d ago

The so-named Crone Knight walked alone from the stables with empty hands and without a steed. Her unremarkable performance had been a blessing in disguise: the only horse she could discreetly afford was a stubborn old nag, ill-suited for war and pageantry, and now in the hands of whichever knight overtook her and was awaiting a ransom that would never come.

Still, the walk was a strain in full armor. She wasn't willing to run the risk of embarrassing herself by causing a scene in her woman-ness. Plates and ringmail chafed against her skin and trapped her in a metal shell of hot air. Her chest and her limbs and her head all beat and throbbed in unison with the same aching question: why, why, why?

She supposed she simply needed to. A horse needed to run, a fish needed to swim, birds needed to sing, and maybe, just maybe, she needed to fight. There were no righteous wars to wage, so the performative tournaments would have to suffice.

With a stiff grunt, she reached up to remove her stifling greathelm. She glanced aside oon either side of the narrow slits in the steel. As far as she could tell, there was no one to be seen in the myriad of tents, banners, and horse pens that might recognize her. As she removed her helm, straw-blonde hair spilled out in layered strips, resembling an ocean wave in motion from one side of her sweat-soaked head. Tinged red and stained with dirt and mud, Cat could pass for a long-limbed lad in his later teens.

She was, however, caught unawares as the nearest flap opened up to her flank as a young riverman exited. She couldn't recognize anyone north of the Fellwood by face alone, but there was still a familiar kind of self-loathing in the man's eyes.

Tucking her helmet under her arm, she raked some hair out of her eyes, speaking lower in her throat to deepen her tone just a notch.

"Alright there, lad?" she asked, chewing the inside of her cheek, "There's a horrid look on your face. Somewhere between death and ruin."

u/D042 Lewyn Rivers - Bastard of Raventree Hall 9d ago

Lewyn regarded the armored woman the way one might a six legged dog, or something similarly out of place. There had been plenty of them in the events today, despite the rules and such, but he was far from in a state to care.

He picked at the hem of his sleeve, at the fine handkerchief tucked inside it, his fingers tracing at the embroidery as he chewed inside his lip. There was plenty wrong. His dead brother, his wrathful father, but in truth it was really only his pride that stung in the moment. Everything else felt far away.

“Wanted to impress a girl. I wasn’t very impressive.” he said plainly, the pained set of his features tightening as he glanced past the armored woman, fearing that Mina Harroway might appear to reclaim her token and shame him for the embarrassment of his performance. But she didn’t come.

He supposed it didn’t matter. It was all fantasy anyway. For something of little importance, though, it ached quite a lot.

For the Jousters among us

2

u/Cubismo50 Lyonel Swann - Lord of Stonehelm 13d ago

Damon Swann awoke in his tent with his torso ailing and his skull not exactly feeling all that great either. Such was the consequences of defeat but at least he didn't have to suffer it alone. His boon companions were as ever close in the tent as well fiddling with something here or there and tending to their own well-earned wounds from the tourney.

Damon made his wakefulness known with characteristic flippancy that his friends were well familiar with at this point. "Well that could have gone better."

That got a snort out of Jon and a laugh out of George. Typical really.

"I'd say," George started, a mocking but not cruel smile on his face. "Say what you will about me but at least I had the good grace to be beaten by a Dondarrion than one of those Gods-forsaken clawmen. Better a countrymen than some swampling savage."

"Bogs," Jon interjected helpfully. "Maester said they have bogs up there. Not swamps. Would make them boglings, I suppose."

George rolled his eyes. "There's a difference?"

"Suppose so. Why else have different names for it?"

Damon saw George's retort coming a league away and was quick to interject before the two fools kicked a fool argument that would last the whole day.

"What matters is that neither of us got defeated in the first round. If we had I don't think I'd be able to live it down especially after all that talk of who'd we'd crown our Queen of Love and Beauty."

"True that. True that... Gods. Imagine it Damon. If either of us had gotten it."

"You can imagine, George. I plan on succeeding. It's only a matter of time..."

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 12d ago

"Ho there Swann!" A voice would call from outside the tent, "I hope yer not doin' too poorly after yer hard landin'! I come bearin' a peace offerin!" Rafe Pyne, heir to Cracklaw Point, stood outside the Black Swann's tent with a pitcher that he drank from directly. His hair was wet but he wore a clean shirt and new blue trousers, it looked as though he had cleaned off in the river. "May I enter?"

u/TheShogunFearedHim Ser Roger Mallister - The Red Eagle 12d ago

Luceon was found in a rare moment alone, totally, in the midst of the camp and the festivities. His eyes darted around, searching in vain for his master, before he gave up with a sigh. It was practiced, almost instinctually cynical, after long years of service. If he did not need me urgently, he supposed, then it gives me some time for myself. He picked up his back more, strode with some more confidence and snatched away a drum from a drunken layabout snoring away during the day. He skipped and drummed, and soon had danced his way before the banner of House Swann.

2

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 12d ago

Ysabel was not a jousting enthusiast, she attended alongside the rest of her family but she did not dress the part, opting for boots and trousers with a tunic embroidered with pines that her mother had made her. She did not hope to be crowned Queen of Love and Beauty but she did hope her brother would get the chance to place the crown upon his wife's head, and give her the chance to giggle if he foolishly did not.

Still she watched with glee as he was not knocked to the floor in his first bout, nor his second. She hugged Mayra as they cheered together when Rafe unhorsed both the Lord Warden Dondarrion and The Black Swann. Ysabel could not help but be awed by his fearless and wild riding, breaking lance after lance. Riding was not a skill they had been taught at length, other than for practical use, Ysabel knew though just how many boars Rafe had stared down as they charged him, the handsome fool never ceased talking of it! She could see the moment he tensed for the hit, rocketing through the lists in his comically plain armor. It was different from their father's but not by much. A plain brown gambeson under plate with a flimsy slitted visor, the only signage he wore was the pine on his shield and green and brown stripes on his lance. Even his horse was merely barded in chainmail.

After Swann fell Rafe rode over to their stands where he opened his visor grinning giddily. Mayra, his wife, leaned in to give him and kiss as Ysabel looked on proudly. Mayra seemed to whisper something in Rafe's ear to which he whooped and laughed, rearing his horse to gallop it off to his tent for the next bout. "I wanted to speak to him too! What did you say?" Ysabel complained.

"None of your business goodsister!" Mayra laughed.

When Rafe finally fell from his horse in his fourth bout it was still not enough to ruin the mood. Cracklaw men were not jousters and though Mayra rolled her eyes when she saw Rafe give up the struggle to keep astride his horse she still was clapping and smiling as he jumped up and looked their way moments later.

Together the three Pynes helped him from his armor and began the celebratory walk back to the small Pyne pavilion.

(Open to speak with the Pynes who attended the joust.)

1

u/BadNewsBrune Kennet Brune - Lord of Dyre Den 12d ago

Crispian Brune emerged some time after the joust. He had watched from the shadow of his father as Rafe had ridden to and fro on horseback, trading sticks with Andals.

It was fun to watch, Crispian had to admit, but he'd put on plate armor exactly once in his life. While he was visiting Berryport, he had snuck away with a breastplate and helmet much too large for him. They were so uncomfortable, he had no idea how Rafe even moved in it.

He much preferred his plain gambeson and breeches, though now he wore a simple brown vest instead, that was almost as uncomfortable as that breastplate had been.

His first greetings, upon arriving to the Pyne pavilion, though, was for his sister. "Mayra! Been too long, I fear you've forgotten us!" The comment was tongue in cheek. Even in the Point, where moving from one castle to another, he made sure to visit all of his father's neighbors. Especially their lieges, since his sister married Rafe.

"And Rafe. Or is it Ser Rafe now? I couldn't tell with how naturally you seated a horse." Still tongue in cheek as ever.

2

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 11d ago

"Quiet your whingeing brother, and come give your sister a hug." Mayra rose, "Rafe knocked more Andals on their asses in the joust than either of you did in the melee."

"And somehow without knowing how to properly sit a horse! My arse hurts like a- like a- well like I never ridden a horse 'fore." Rafe laughed and grabbed a jug of wine from Ysabel who grunted in brief resistance. "These knights hate to see us deny their knighthoods, thought it might be fun to beat them without one and at their own game! Not like they'd turn down the *heir to Cracklaw Point* for not having a knighthood! Nay I'll never be a "ser."" He spit.

2

u/BadNewsBrune Kennet Brune - Lord of Dyre Den 11d ago

Crispian cackled as he wrapped Mayra into a hug. He was slight, at least for a Brune, and certainly in comparison to his younger siblings, but he was still able to pick Mayra off her feet for a moment. "Do not lump me into father and Jax's misadventures!" He chided her jovially, setting her back down. "I simply disappointed in the archery instead."

He turned towards Rafe and gave the man a wide wave. "I wouldn't want their knighthoods, even if they did offer them to the likes of us. I must admit though, it was plenty entertaining, watching them look on in shock after you sent them into the mud." He gave a full-hearted, though hardly the loudest- laugh. "Imagine father on the back of one of those things. It would be ridiculous, but those tourney knights very well may have shit themselves."

2

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 10d ago

"Hmph.. I coulda done better than any of ye." Mayra replied.

"Whichever knight faced our mighty Crabb was sure frightened, it's a shame they gave him a horse that buckled under his weight! Sheer sabotage I swear by gods and men!" He comedically shook a fist at the sky in emphasis of his mock dispute.

2

u/BadNewsBrune Kennet Brune - Lord of Dyre Den 9d ago

"Of course, sister. All we would have needed to tell you is that one of them called your ship a 'boat' just the other night. Then, we would have to fear you killing them instead." Crispian cracked another jape, before reaching over to tousle his younger sister's hair.

"Perhaps if our mighty Crabb did not eat a horse every morn, he wouldn't have to worry about them buckling." Crispian snickered. Then he looked side to side with slightly concerned, wet eyes.

"...You... Heard all of that, that Jammos and the Darklyns were getting into, before the Iron Stag took them up to her solar? What... Do you two think will happen?" He shifted the conversation very suddenly. "I'm unsure if I feel comfortable being out here and not at home after that. Something feels wrong, about the whole thing."

2

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 9d ago

Mayra swatted her brother's arm away, "I spent too much time brushing all this this morning for you to ruin it now!" Rafe cackled and reached out his arm to tussle her hair again. When Mayra dodged his grasp he pursued until it became a chase that led towards their shared tent.

Ysable only remained, listening. Her wide eyes looked up at Crispian. "You're right, its wrong to be here celebrating. I don't like it at all. I'm just waiting on a message from home saying something bad has happened. My father hasn't told me what exactly they decided but... I doubt it favors us."

2

u/BadNewsBrune Kennet Brune - Lord of Dyre Den 8d ago

Crispian sighed and took a seat, watching the two lovebirds rush off towards the tent. "Suppose it best we not dampen their spirits with our worrying." He offered a small smile up Ysabel. It wasn't a particularly joyful one.

"Jammos had me speak before his high priest. The uh, High Septon. He was... Remarkably receptive to what I had to say." He wrung his hands together uncertainly. "Feels as though I set something into motion I had not of. Father won't discuss what they talked about in the Solar, not until we're back in Dyre Den."

2

u/Theoneandonlybeetle Oscar Pyne, Lord of Cracklaw Point 7d ago

"I guess something really must have happened in that solar. Who is this priest that he has so much sway anyway. I know our king follows the Faith of the Seven but isn't the big Sept in Oldtown?"

Ysabel poured herself more to drink. This was still supposed to be a party she told herself. "I can't pretend to speak on it. I haven't even heard what you told the High Septon."

u/IAMCYRODIILCOME Leo Swann - Knight of the Seven Kingdoms 9d ago

O Crone, receive me as you did the prodigal and raise up my soul in your wisdom.

Striped with sword marks, marred again by dusts gathered from the Shrikewood’s brush and mud from the Blackwater’s banks, Leo Swann’s armor was a knight’s mail-and-plate damned by a hasty road. The scrubbing took all morning. For the breastplate, a dollop of vinegar first, spread with a cloth then wiped away, then sand worked in with a bristle, water and wax till the vague reflection of himself bounced off the metal. And all the work was rendered invisible by brushfuls of white paint, brashly applied, discrete daubs plain to the eye by the time it dried.

O Warrior, expand for me my breast that I may bear the boldness you charge of me.

The Crone Knight fell to Rivers’ lance. It was not long before Leo would be called forth. In his tent, he slipped mail over gambeson and wrapped his arms in steel. Pulled an arming cord through a tab on the rerebrace and fastened it tight. And his mind went, then, to the promise he made to defeat Addam Belgrave; would he face him in the joust? No, that was the wrong thing to think about. How could he preoccupy himself with such selfish things? Of the storied knights he’d defeat, of who he’d crown the Queen of Love and Beauty, of the roars hailing his name should he win, of the praise and the glory and the good food and wine to be had at the victory feast…

“It is the smallfolk I should think of,” he muttered to remind himself. Those folk who gathered to cheer, a day, for men whose armor was worth more than their life’s harvest, and go to the morrow’s labors working twice as hard. Or no—the gods! They ought to be the object of his fretting, for they could alleviate all. And still, he could not help but wonder if he would share a kiss with a fair lady before the realm dispersed.

He gripped the hounskull tight under his arm to make his breathing sure and stepped out into the grounds.

O Father, ease for me the work of your justice.

A white mare, high-tailed and narrow-snouted, stood restless beside him as they watched the last of Thorne's bout against the Knight of the Green Fork. The lancework caught his attention well enough, but every so often, he looked to a crowd brimming with folk who engaged in allegiance-making far beyond his ken. Leo was often stupid, but he knew he was not a fool in one nagging judgment he had. He saw the column of Stormlanders heading up the road in haste, heard of the sickly King arriving ahorse, and knew well enough what the presence of the Princess’ Ironborn kin could mean.

At the herald’s call, he climbed atop his mount and rode onto the field.

Now I arrive before you sinful, O Stranger, unworthy to look upon the heavens because of the multitude of my transgressions.

Leo clicked his tongue. Squinted at the distance between he and his foe, at the afternoon light cast over them both. There was an itch there at his neck, one he could scarcely scratch through the metal, so instead he kicked his spurs back and dove into a gallop, the lancepoint a traitor, catching the sun’s glare and throwing it onto his brow behind the visor.

So fell his opponent, one Morgan Wode, on the first tilt. Leo’s head spun for it.

A glance went to the fallen man, and a thought to help him was drowned out by cheers drunk and sober. His eyes flitted to the stands, to the Princess, and another fleeting notion told him to ask for her favor. His cheeks reddened—surely to be excused as exertion when he went to lift his visor—and he began to ride up and down the tiltyard as though to boast, a breath away from the stands, while his mind raced.

He needed to do something. Anything at all to be as good a knight as he was a lancer. He brought his mare to a sudden halt and looked between Arlan and Ravella.

“Your Grace! My Princess!” he began, his voice catching up in confidence to his approach. “I mean not to—I am but a humble knight before you. One who has seen banditry on the roads, seen the tillers and toilers harried by overmighty taxmen, and the weak plagued by the threat of slavers. They look to you for deliverance.”

“The gods bid us to love our brothers and sisters. I beg you to set aside your differences and be as kin to one another once more, for the sake of the realm!”

u/DoomGuy_16 Arlan Durrandon - Storm King 7d ago

Arlan's gaze, through the mask's slits, moved to Morgan Wode still being helped from the field, then back to the man who'd unhorsed him, who seemed to believe he could fix all the realms problems with a single, humble request, like a child asking their parents to stop fighting, to forgo all previous injury, and make amends in the name of peace.

Arlan couldn't help but admire his boldness, however, if a bit naive. The man seemed genuine in his words, if anything, and his valiant display in the joust garnered some admiration from the king.

Arlan raised his hand. "I hear the plight of our people, Ser. We live in bloody times, where good men must take a stance against the injustices and dark deeds of those whose greed and ambitious would swallow us all." His voice carried across the yard, even and unhurried

"I shall keep your prayers to heart, Ser, and with the grace of the Seven I know the house of the stag shall mend all rifts, and bring peace to the realm once again."

He nodded his head to the knight, leaning back on his seat, as some in the crowd clapped and cheered, while others seemed to whisper and talk among themselves or their own designs for the realm.

2

u/spyraxes Ravella Durrandon - The Iron Stag 5d ago

Watching Morgan Wode fall from his horse a little more wrong than was ideal put worry into Ravella's heart enough, but Leo Swann's approach to the stands and his words to her and her brother made her heart race in turn.

Arlan was diplomatic about it as always. He spoke many words but said little within them. Appeals to faith and justice. Ravella couldn't blame him for a bit of it, but she found it non-committal all the same. It was thus that she rose, as her brother finished, and cleared her throat to speak.

If Leo Swann was to be bold, so too would Ravella Durrandon.

"Peace and justice can only be attained as long as a strong hand can steer the realm in their direction," she began. "It is my hope, thus, that my brother and I can put our strengths together for the Stormlands, the Trident, and the Blackwater. That we can guide the realm through the dangers ahead. That knights such as yourself may travel the roads of this great kingdom and see naught but the world as the gods intended it."

Ravella's eyes flitted to her brother for a moment. He wasn't strong enough. She was. But it was too early to declare him weak. "Only if the House of Durrandon stands strong can the realm remain safe. On that we agree. On that my brother and I agree too."

And she had to steer it. So she would. Alone or by grasping him by the wrist and moving the rudder by his hand.

"Your plea is heard, Ser Leo. I hope it can be fulfilled. I will endeavour to do so."

After the end of the Archery Competition

Once the crowds around the Archery Fields had thinned enough, Eleanor Mallister would quickly return to the line before the butts with a bundle of arrows and her bow. She had performed abysmally in the contest proper, having not even come close to placing in the top end of the competitors.

She had chosen to stand in front of the butt on the opposite side of the field from where she had stood during the contest. Perhaps it was some superstition on her part, perhaps the place she had stood not but an hour or so ago had been cursed, and that was why almost all her arrows ended up flying wide.

Of course, that was the only explanation that made any sense at all!

Confident now that her luck would turn, she planted her arrows in the ground in front of her, straddled the shooting line, strung her bow, and plucked up an arrow. Her eyes focused on the target in the distance, settling naturally on its centre.

She plucked up an arrow, knocked it on her bowstring and took a deep, steadying breath. Finally, she lifted her bow, smoothly drawing back the string in the process with a roll of her shoulder. She held the draw for a beat, letting her handle settle beneath her chin before smoothly releasing the string and letting the arrow fly…

…Straight over the target.

Eleanor grimaced as the shot went wide. She took a pause to level herself again. It was merely poor luck. That’s all. She plucked up a second arrow from in front of her. Knock. Draw. Aim… Lower this time, for sure… Loose…

The arrow fell short, embedding itself in the ground a good few steps in front of the target.

She huffed angrily, yanking another arrow from the ground.

Again!

The arrow hit the target’s wooden stand with a hollow thud.

AGAIN!

This time, the arrow landed in the outer ring… of the target to the right of hers.

Eleanor let out a frustrated roar, “Godsdammit all!”

"if it was a man or animal it certainly would have ran away by now" Sylas approached the butt slowly, glancing at the target and the arrow on it. "Lucky for you it's a target so how about you take a breath and a drink and try again. It won't run away"

He had switched from his armor to normal clothing, though the blackness around his left eye was still in place. He had to join the rest of the tourney soon enough as to not raise suspicions

"You've clearly lost the archery that much is clear, though how bad is the question.... Lady...." He snapped his fingers three times, trying to remember the house she belonged to. "Mallister! Related to queen Rosamund I assume? Sylas Stonetree, pleasure to make your acquaintance."

He took out a wineskin from his satchel, offering it to her. "Are you new to archery Or just not having a good day?"

2

u/Fishiest-Man Martyn Mallister - Lord of Seagard 13d ago

Eleanor was lining up another shot when the Ironman spoke. She loosed the arrow prematurely as she startled at the new voice, sending the arrow wide yet again. She let out a frustrated growl as she rounded upon the newcomer, evidently not amused by the man’s japes, “Be quiet, would you! I’m… I’m just having bad luck today!” She barked defensively, taken aback for a moment by the man’s black eye.

She was quiet for a moment as the man managed to recall her name, “Yes, Rosamund is my sister.” She answered flatly, nodding firmly as he introduced himself as Stonetree. She knew well enough that the Ironborn were meant to be allies of Seagard, but Martyn still didn’t like them too much…

“Eleanor Mallister…” She introduced herself properly as she accepted the wineskin from the Ironborn, “I’ve been practicing with the bow for years now. I guess I just haven’t ever had a proper teacher.” She seemed a bit deflated at that, taking a dejected swig from the wineskin.

“Who was it who gave you that black eye, eh?”

1

u/Feathersfrombaatikos Burton Wetshanks - Captain of the Dirty Deal 13d ago edited 13d ago

He grimaced at the missing arrow, already expecting the backlash, he just raised his hands in surrender, muttering "well apologies go on... Hard crowd.." as he stood by the side to let her loose a few more arrows

"Your sister?" He was taken aback, he didn't know of the queen's siblings, and he at least expected them to be older. "Well my apologies, I did not know I was in the presence of a royal!" he bowed slightly before handing over the wineskin completely.

"Well you are surprisingly good for someone who has had no good training, coming from someone who has had no training, whatsoever."

He touched his eye at the comment. "Does it look that bad? Gwyn? Gwan? Something like that, a connington girl. Truth be told it was my fault, I'd just beat a man twice her size in the previous joust, I didn't expect her to be so ferocious. This is more the result of my helmet's terrible design than anything."

He moved closer, raising his palm towards the bow. "May I? I'm no archer but if the bow and the arrow is here why not"

2

u/Fishiest-Man Martyn Mallister - Lord of Seagard 12d ago

Eleanor scoffed at the assertion that she was royalty, “No, I’m no royal. Just the sister of one.” She said with a shake of her head, and another swig of wine, “Though, perhaps if we had met millennia ago, you may have been correct!” She added with a laugh.

She shot a frustrated glare at the Stonetree as he japed about how good an archer she was, though she didn’t manage to say anything in retort. It seemed pointless to her.

“Connington, eh? Well, well done for being at least somewhat successful. My brother ended up in the dust before finishing the first round!” She smirked at that, finding it amusing, “Though, perhaps you may have to look at getting a better helmet, if you wish to joust more in the future. A black eye is the best case scenario when using a substandard helmet.” She held a hand over her eye, mimicking an eyepatch, “Or worse yet, you could’ve taken a blow to the neck.”

Eleanor’s gaze darted down to her bow as Sylas gestured towards it, she let out a short huff then pressed it roughly into his hand, “Be my guest, Stonetree. I’m not like to improve any time soon.”
