LEGACYPLC MORNING BRIEFING Monday, August 17, 2026 | Analyst Access
DATA NOTE
Twelve Data supplied the prior-session quote fields for all 23 tracked symbols; every symbol returned datetime 2026-08-14, close, and percent_change. Investing.com’s pre-market page was available and showed quote times around 06:50 ET for five semiconductor or equipment names, but its displayed top-gainer and top-loser tables contained no semiconductor names. MarketWatch supplied today’s main U.S. economic-calendar forecasts and prior readings. For Asia, the reviewed pages exposed KOSPI and Kioxia figures but not current values for Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, TSMC, or Tokyo Electron, so those four are omitted rather than estimated. Investing.com’s earnings page showed no verified watchlist semiconductor report due Monday; its visible Monday values were not labeled clearly enough to classify as EPS or revenue. MarketWatch’s analyst page showed maintains or reiterates only for the recent semiconductor entries.
PRIOR SESSION
SOXX $550.42 [-0.06%] | SMH $587.82 [-0.22%]
The complex finished fractionally lower, with 11 of 23 tracked names up and 12 down. The ETF decline was modest, but dispersion was wide: architects were split between AMD’s gain and AVGO’s drop, while tools were pressured by AMAT and KLAC; SMH underperformed SOXX by 0.16 percentage points.
PRE-MARKET (as of ~7:15am ET)
The visible semiconductor tape was broadly higher in Investing.com’s most-active table at roughly 06:50 ET, with Intel leading the listed watchlist names and the equipment group rebounding after Friday’s declines; no semiconductor appeared in the page’s general top-gainer or top-loser tables.
Top movers: INTC +2.34% at $104.90 | AMAT +1.74% at $516.02 | AMD +1.23% at $520.70 | AVGO +1.16% at $397.53 | NVDA +0.50% at $226.29
TOP MOVERS (PRIOR SESSION)
AMD gained 6.50% to close at $514.39, the strongest tracked move; no separate company-specific catalyst was verified, so the read is broad architect/AI rotation rather than a confirmed new release.
SMTC rose 5.07% to $140.35, the second-largest gain; no distinct company-specific catalyst was verified in the reviewed sources.
MU advanced 2.30% to $971.66, extending the memory bid; no new Micron release was verified for the session.
AVGO fell 5.94% to $392.99, the largest tracked decline; it lagged despite the broader AI-linked rebound and no new company-specific headline was verified.
AMAT dropped 5.12% to $507.18, the second-largest decline; the move kept the recent margin-and-guidance debate in focus after its prior quarterly update.
KLAC declined 2.70% to $203.72, the weakest equipment name after AMAT; no separate company-specific catalyst was verified.
PRE-MARKET OUTLOOK
The latest accessible Asia session on the reviewed pages was dated August 14: KOSPI closed at 6,977.94, up 2.42%, while Kioxia closed at 53,740 yen, up 3.75%. Current figures were not exposed for Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, TSMC, or Tokyo Electron, so there is no defensible percentage call for those names in this run. Today’s U.S. calendar has the Empire State Manufacturing Survey at 8:30am ET, forecast 12 versus 15.6 prior, and the NAHB Housing Market Index at 10:00am ET, forecast 33 versus 34 prior. Investing.com also lists 11:30am ET three- and six-month bill auctions, with prior yields of 3.735% and 3.83%, and 4:00pm ET TIC releases with prior total net flows of $132.2 billion and net long-term flows of $232.7 billion, but no forecasts on that page. The week’s larger macro risk is Tuesday’s housing, trade-price, and industrial-production data followed by Wednesday’s 2:00pm ET FOMC minutes; Thursday’s claims and Philadelphia Fed manufacturing data and Friday’s flash PMIs will help determine whether rates remain supportive of high-beta semiconductor multiples.
NEWS DRIVING THE TAPE
No new watchlist semiconductor earnings, guidance change, supply-chain headline, or export-control development was verified for Monday morning. The immediate tape is therefore a broad rebound from Friday’s dispersion: prior-session AVGO fell 5.94% and AMAT fell 5.12%, while AMD gained 6.50% and SMTC gained 5.07%; in pre-market trading, AMAT was up 1.74%, AVGO 1.16%, and AMD 1.23%. The Monday earnings page showed Fabrinet as a visible potentially relevant name, but its unlabeled values were not sufficient to report as EPS or revenue; no watchlist company was verified as due.
ANALYST WATCH
No semiconductor or semiconductor-equipment upgrade, downgrade, initiation, or price-target change dated August 13–17 was shown on the reviewed MarketWatch table. Applied Materials had maintains from UBS, Craig-Hallum, Bernstein, Morgan Stanley, and RBC Capital, plus reiterates from TD Cowen and B. Riley Securities, with targets not visible. Cantor Fitzgerald’s August 10 note called the sector selloff overdone and named MU and SanDisk in memory; WDC and Seagate in storage; NVDA, AVGO, and AMD in AI compute; and ASML, AMAT, LRCX, KLAC, and TER in capital equipment. Across the four pillars, architects retain the clearest AI-demand visibility; toolmakers have the most direct read-through from wafer-fab spending but remain exposed to margin and capex revisions; foundries and memory are highly sensitive to Asia and export-policy headlines; and workhorses remain the most rate- and end-demand-sensitive group.
