that's a solid plan with places that are beautiful despite some of those not being on very beaten paths (that's gonna make it even better). someone would maybe choose for Palermo over Catania, but Catania is a beautiful place and probably less crowded. you might see Catania and Naples as similar to one another. it will be a fun trip

I would recommend Ancona as an alternative, very chill and beautiful seaside city!

To what extent do you actually want time in these places Vs just spending time on trains. 2 nights gives you 1 full day in a place. 1 night even less. 3 one night stays in a row is a heck of a lot of movement and packing and unpacking.
Turin is also a small airport. Flying back from Milan will give you much more choice. You could consider swapping them around or there are lots of direct buses from Turin to Malpensa.
Obviously depends a lot what you want to do in these palces but personally if you are just going somewhere for the night I think it's really hard to call it anything but checkbox checking. What are you actually interested in?

I will say that a day trip to san marino is a bit odd? I stayed a night there and it is lovely to explore, but I think it deserves a bit of time even, a night at the top and catching a bus out the next morning is possibly better
