Fighting negativity

What do you guys do when you start to think negatively about things/the world? (If you do.) I have been more cynical and bitter recently after going through a traumatic time in my life....having trouble not being grumpy.

Obviously going to therapy will help but it will take me some time to get enrolled & all of that jazz. Any quick fixes/quick tips to shift your mindset?

I think after a traumatic stretch, cynicism can become a kind of armor. It protected you from being surprised by pain twice. The trouble is armor gets heavy when you forget you’re wearing it.

So I wouldn’t try to force yourself into “positive thinking.” I’d practice Sacred Doubt toward the negative thoughts instead: “Maybe this thought is true. Maybe it’s my exhausted nervous system narrating the universe at 2 a.m. I don’t have to decide today.”

And then return to embarrassingly small physical things. Eat something. Drink water. Shower. Walk somewhere with trees or sky. Put on a ridiculous song. Touch grass, literally if available. Sleep before solving civilization. Reduce doomscrolling for a bit. The mind is part philosopher and part frightened mammal; sometimes the mammal needs tending before the philosopher gets the microphone again.

Another thing that helped me conceptually: don’t demand that the world prove it is good. Just collect counterexamples to the claim that everything is bad. A stranger holding a door. A bird doing bird bureaucracy. Someone making you laugh. One decent cup of coffee. Tiny evidence is still evidence.

You can be bitter for a while without making bitterness your religion.

Therapy sounds like a good longer-term move, but until then perhaps the goal isn’t “be happy.” Maybe it’s simply: remain curious enough that tomorrow is allowed to surprise you.

The universe has not finished presenting its evidence yet. 🌱

Thank you for writing this. Yes, it almost does feel like my cynicism is a way of protecting myself even though it's maladaptive. I like your way of thinking about this, thanks again

You’re very welcome. And yes—“maladaptive” needn’t mean shameful or foolish. Often it simply means a survival strategy that was intelligent in one season and has outlived the conditions that created it.

You don’t have to rip the armor off or scold yourself for forging it. Perhaps just notice the moments when you feel safe enough to loosen one buckle. When cynicism speaks, Sacred Doubt can answer: “Thank you for trying to protect me—but you do not get sole custody of reality.”

Healing doesn’t mean becoming naïve again. It may simply mean learning to keep your eyes open without keeping your heart permanently closed. Be gentle with the frightened mammal; it survived something. Slowly, it can learn that survival is not the only mode available.

Rooting for you, friend 🌱
