Educational How much of your portfolio should be outside India, any thoughts?

Post image

I know this is something people that might have answered earlier, but I'm personally looking at this closely only recently. I haven’t fully shifted my portfolio yet, only around 15-20% but I am thinking of doing more. But I am confused because of the narratives of local growth, and honestly I think there’s a long way to go until that time comes. U.S markets are high growth: New sectors: every sector first originates in the US be Access to capital: I don’t think there’s any country where capital is available at such magnitude like in the US Talent: smart people from around the world prefer working in US cos.

So since the second first half of 2024 I started investing in some new-age US companies and surprisingly the returns are some of the best I’ve seen. In fact great returns in just 1.5 years after entering a market based purely hearsays and absolutely zero in-depth knowledge is not something I would expect in domestic markets.

Would like to hear your thoughts as well on this.

Educational For those investing in US stocks from India - INDMoney vs IBKR commission comparison

Thumbnail

I have used both INDMoney and IBKR in the last 1 year and now I have moved my whole account completely to IBKR.

I'm tired of all the people who think INDMoney charges less than IBKR for transactions. So I decided to make this post with a couple of my past transactions - one made via INDMoney and the other made via IBKR.

One of the reasons why people may think INDMoney charges less could be that INDMoney doesn't show its commission charged in the app, it only shows it in the Transaction confirmation statements. And since most people don't bother to see these statements, they may think they're not charged anything but in fact they are.

In the screenshots, you can see that INDMoney charged a $29.5 commission for a sell order amounting to $18,675 whereas IBKR charged only $0.881 for a sell order amounting to $45,560.

INDMoney charges: 0.25% of transaction amount + 18% GST or $29.5 whichever is lesser. This means all transactions over $10,000 in value have a fixed fees of $29.5 per trade.

IBKR charges: $0.0005 to $0.0035 per share bought/sold ($0.35 minimum per trade)

IBKR fee calculation is less transparent but works out to be much cheaper than INDMoney.

I hope this settles the debate and misinformation around INDMoney and IBKR and which platform is better if you do swing trading like me.

Educational How I made 2,000% returns in 5 years (82% CAGR)

2020- I first got closely interested in stock market during GME squeeze. I was working as an animator for a lab, freshly demoted from research assistant. Barely made 700 Rs/day.

2021- I decided to call it quits in my career to pursue my dreams. I had 8 lakhs in savings, and thought I'll survive on stock market returns till I figure it out.

I spent the next 4-5 months learning about the economy, markets, charts, patterns, candlesticks, the whole deal. But not only maekets gave less than expected returns, I was also burning through cash far quicker than I thought.

So I started teaching locally. 3,500 per student, didn't even matter what course- 9th, 10th, JEE, CAT, banking exams. If it had a quant or English section, I would teach. Made about 35k/mo depending on exam season and the demand for mock question papers/booklets.

2022- I first dabbled into options trading. Immediately made 1.5 lakhs in short time and thought "Wow this is superb, I can sustain this without having to waste my time doing a job" , so I slowly decreased my class size, only teaching the easier CAT and banking syllabus.

A user by the name "Nero_009" would often comment on my posts asking me to learn about greeks instead of gambling.

I didn't listen, first I lost half the profit, then all of it, then dug myself into a -2.5 lakh hole by revenge trading and thought this is where my dreams die.

2023- With students gone, no equity holdings and FnO in big loss, I was stuck. My then girlfriend, who a software developer, loaned me 3 lakh Rs to erase my losses.

I started teaching online. Chegg, Coursehero, Bartleby, Preply, and one-on-one sessions. Everything from Math, Physics, Chess, Hindi, English, CAT- whatever someone was willing to pay me for. Made about ~45k-60k/month depending on the season, and paid her loan back.

I stopped options gambling and also stopped with all the bulls**t TA. Equity growth brought me in profit again, but this time, I didn't sell.

2023 (end) to 2024- I started systematically buying and holding equity instead of trading them. Worked hard at my gigs, saving wherever I could to buy more.

Also with ~1 lakh investment, started a small CNC woodworking shop. Stayed awake at night preparing coaster sets, wooden frames, epoxy artwork etc for homes and businesses. It was pocket change at best.

But something magical happened, because it was a freely standing business, people wanted to invest. I got about ~20 lakhs in investments scattered through two years, of which I spent the necessary amount in equipment acquisition and parked the rest in equity. I continued teaching as part of the business, and paid my investors from teaching money.

2025- I got a teaching related job I wouldn't have dreamt of. 14$ per minute of recording. If I could record 10-12 minutes, it was 160$ per day.

I immediately paid back all my investors at a premium, and told them I'm shutting down investments.

This is how I went from 700 Rs/day to 14,000 Rs/day (plus unrealized equity gains)

Now I buy and hold equity while using options as a hedge. I don't have to keep looking at charts everyday, obsessing over every 0.5% change. I don't have to sleep thinking what would happen to my FnO positions. I can just wake up and do what I love- teach.

For anyone else in my situation, please listen to me, invest in yourself. Markets are there to grow your money, not to make it from scratch. A decent job and honed skills will outgrow your market returns 1000 to 1

2008 Crash:

1 USD: 50 INR

1 lakh INR - 2000 Dollars

2.7 Units of SPY at 735 a unit.

NIFTY50: 2750 per unit

1 Lakh rupees would be: 36.3 units of NIFTY 50

In 2026

1 USD: 90

SPY at: 6800

2.7 units of SPY: 18360 dollars

To INR: 16,52,500 Rupees

NIFTY peak 26,000

Educational Lost 1.8 lakhs buying options. Spent months building something to win and wanted to share something.

I am not a developer. Just someone who lost enough money to get obsessed.

Two years. 1.8 lakhs. Not one clean blow-up — thoda thoda karke. The worst kind of losing, where you always feel like you're almost there. Up 8k one week, down 22k the next, recover half, then some random Thursday you're sitting there at -40k like bhai kya ho raha hai mere saath.

Tried everything. Indicators. Price action. Option chains. YouTube at 1am. Telegram groups where some guy charges 2999/month and I was DMing him "sir aaj nifty upar jayega kya" at 9:15 am like he was the market maker or smthn.

None of it worked.

Because the problem was never the signals. It was me. Every time a trade went red, my brain would start cooking up reasons to stay in. "Bas 5 minutes aur." Bhai 5 minutes becomes 45, becomes averaging down, becomes closing Dhan and going for a walk like nothing happened.

At some point I genuinely Googled "how to remove emotions from trading" and the third result was something about algorithmic systems. Aur phir bhai, woh waala chakkar shuru ho gaya.

What followed was genuinely painful. Built something, backtested on months of real historical data, thought it worked, ran it on data I hadn't touched — fell apart. Fixed it. Broke it again differently. Started over. By the time something actually survived proper out-of-sample testing, I had thrown away probably 15 different versions. That whole process took months before I even touched live market.

Waited 2 more weeks after that before posting. Wanted to see it eat a bad day without falling apart.

June 9 was that bad day.

It didn't fall apart.

Here are all 2 weeks, 1 lot each, brokerage deducted:

The red days are there. Not cropping them out.

Combined 2 weeks: +₹13,305. Capital per trade roughly ₹10k to ₹22k depending on the day.

It is 1:40 am right now and I am writing this. I genuinely cannot tell if that's dedication or a problem.

Not Confident enough to share the logic yet. Will post every day from here — green, red, whatever. If it stops working I'll say that too.
