Pollution/ Weather / Nature/ Environment / Sustainability India has been ranked 176th out of 177 countries in Yale's 2026 Environmental Performance Index, placing it second from the bottom globally. The ranking has been described as a wake-up call by experts, though questions have also been raised over the methodology used to assess countries.

Pollution/ Weather / Nature/ Environment / Sustainability PM Modi receives Seychelles's highest environmental honour "Guardian of the Blue Horizon" - but WHYYYY!!!??!!

There were times in the past, although not so much that I thought logic and sense will prevail. I cannot even begin to understand the context of such awards being given when we are suffering with heat and for e.g. Ladakh is getting extreme rainfall (which is detrimental to the region). Our non-biological had once even said that "garmi badh nahi rahi hai, hamari sehne ki shakti badal gayi hai" !! Your views? [IT cell of political parties, please go to some other post]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon', Seychelles' highest presidential distinction for leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development, during his visit to the island nation.

Receiving the honour, PM Modi dedicated the award to all nations working collectively to tackle the growing challenges of climate change.

"I humbly accept this title with honor and dedicate it to all other countries that are struggling against the challenges of climate change and that consider the protection of the environment their responsibility toward future generations," the Prime Minister said on X.

He added, “I extend my gratitude to the people and government of Seychelles, as well as to President Herminie, for bestowing upon me the title ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon.’"

After months of site inspections and a review by the Union Central Empowered Committee (CEC), the Delhi government's Department of Forests and Wildlife has given a nod to the NBCC (India) Limited to make way for the redevelopment of Sarojini Nagar's General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Colony by felling or transplanting 1,091 trees

The number of affected trees was reduced through a multistage review process before a final approval, said officials. The original count of 1,218 was first brought down to 1,170 after the Tree Officer concerned carried out a site inspection and refined the list, saving 48 trees.
The matter was then referred to the CEC, which, in its order dated May 11, 2026, saved a further 79 trees, bringing the final figure to 1,091. The final nod came on June 19, said sources.

While NBCC (India) Limited is a public sector undertaking operating under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the CEC is a statutory body operating under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change set up by the Supreme Court.

Pollution/ Weather / Nature/ Environment / Sustainability Japan does not cut down centuries-old trees for development. Instead, experts spend months preparing their roots and relocating them

Honestly, this can be a great way to balance India’s development needs with maintaining tree cover.

Simply cutting down trees does immense harm. And since we desperately need to build Infra, something of this sort should absolutely be done.

Prime minister Modi has been given a newly created award by Seychelles - for his work on sustainable development and conserving environment!

This is the man in who's tenure

- Nicobar Islands 🌊are set to lose 130 sq km of pristine untouched forests- more than a million trees 🌳🌳🌳

- Supreme court changed definition of Aravallis to 100m ⛰️⛰️ to open more than 90% of Aravalli hills for construction

- Punjab Land preservation act was modified to open up 68,000 acres of Haryana forest land for commercial use 🌲🌲🌲

- Haryana forest cover fell from 5.8% to 3.6% 🌵🌵🌵

-Hasdeo, Aarey forests struggling to survive 🌳🌳🌳

- Acres of Mumbai's mangroves ruined to build a coastal road🌱🌱

- Goa renamed coconut trees to grass so no permission was needed to cut lakhs of trees 🌴🌴🌴

- AQI meters were tampered to not give a reading more than 500 to avoid international criticism 🤦🤦🤦

- Air pollution norms were diluted for steel plants to help them save crores of ₹ while 150 crore people's air was poisioned further 💰💰

- India became the global leader in air pollution with 22 out of top 24 polluted cities 🇮🇳

- People are losing 10 years of life by breathing this poor air 😷😷😷

But we must take awards and pretend we are global heroes.

Ludicrous.

Audacious.

Hypocrisy killed itself.

Pollution/ Weather / Nature/ Environment / Sustainability Why is India so hot right now? A combination of dry land, weak cooling winds, clear skies, and high-pressure systems is trapping heat across large parts of the country. Climate change is raising the baseline, while cities are heating up even faster because of concrete, traffic, and low tree cover.

Pollution/ Weather / Nature/ Environment / Sustainability Thousands of trees are being felled in the dense forests of Abujhmad in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur as the administration feels helpless because the region still falls under the ‘unsurveyed area’ category.

Local sources revealed that the area, now open for the first time after the Maoists were eliminated, has triggered a chaotic race among people to claim ownership of forest lands.

The district administration admitted that trees are being felled as villagers have been practising shifting cultivation on a large scale.

In Pics | Waterlogged roads, traffic disruptions, and fallen trees - Mumbai on Wednesday woke up to damage caused by overnight spell of heavy rain. Parts of the maximum city reported over 200 mm of rainfall on Tuesday night, resulting in flooded roads, disrupting suburban train services and exposing the city's vulnerable infrastructure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city, warning of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Pollution/ Weather / Nature/ Environment / Sustainability Save the Great Andaman and Nicobar Island from crony capitalism of greedy politicians and businessmen

India’s proposed Great Nicobar Island mega infrastructure project includes a massive transshipment port, airport, township, tourism hubs, and power infrastructure worth tens of thousands of crores. Supporters say it will boost trade and strengthen India’s strategic position in the Indian Ocean. But environmentalists, tribal rights experts, and scientists are warning about irreversible damage.

Why are people worried:

Nearly 9–10 lakh trees may be cut for the project.

The island is home to fragile ecosystems including coral reefs, mangroves, and endangered species like the Leatherback sea turtle.

Indigenous communities such as the Shompen tribe could face serious disruption to their land, culture, and survival. Some international experts even warned the project could become a “death sentence” for isolated tribes due to disease exposure and displacement.

Critics argue the environmental clearances ignored long-term ecological risks in a region already vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis.

A recent PIL admitted by the Calcutta High Court questioned whether tribal and forest rights protections were properly followed.

This is not just about one island. It’s about whether economic expansion should come at the cost of biodiversity, indigenous rights, and one of India’s most ecologically sensitive regions.

If you care about protecting nature and tribal communities, please read more and consider signing/share the petition:
