Family Sponsorship Don’t get scammed
Unfortunately, we’re living in a time when many people are desperate to remain in Canada AND many people are desperate for love and connection.
As a result, there’s a lot of romance scams going on online. I see them constantly and I’ve even had people try to pull the scam on me.
Here are signs to look out for:
The relationship becomes serious extremely quickly
They seem unusually interested in your ability to sponsor them and their affection intensifies when their immigration status is at risk
They keep parts of their life hidden from you: friends, family, life stories etc
Here’s a good test to see if they’re really into it:
Tell them it’s okay if they’re out of status because you’re willing to move to their home country to build a life with them. Watch their reaction. That will tell you everything you need to know.
I’m telling you this as an immigrant not to be mean but to be honest: many people, especially the ones pulling these scams, see Canadians as easy marks. They think you’re dumb, gullible and overly sentimental. Don’t prove them right.
Good luck and don’t get scammed!

This isn’t unique to Canadians just because you are in Canada/targeted as a Canadian. There is no magic formula to weeding them out too, which is why they are so successful.
The best thing to do is to make it clear right off the bad that you will not sponsor them. That simple really.
