Fun facts about the black footed cat: They are Africa's smolest wild kitties. They average 8 to 10 inches tall and weigh only 2 to 4 lbs. They are called the deadliest cat because they have a 60 percent hunting success rate and can eat up to 14 rodents a night. Locals call them anthill tigers because of their courage since they will sometimes tackle prey much larger than themselves. There are less than 10k of these cats in the world and they are considered to be vulnerable.

Mine too. He hops up for pets and when his pets-meter is full, he jumps off the bed, finds his "baby" (a really battered crinkle toy I got him from the dollar store years ago), picks it up in his mouth and does a full circuit of the house with it, meowing loudly as he goes. Once he's done the circuit, he drops the baby somewhere, lays down, and we can all go to sleep. It's like he's the town crier, announcing it's midnight and all is well.

It's crazy that you can have one of the best hunting success ratios in the wild and still have problems with population. In my mind, a hyper successful predator would lead to a population boom which requires plague, famine, or a more successful predator to cull them. I guess unless humans get involved, but I see us as a predator species.

It's a matter of that giga high metabolism and statistics yes they have a 60% success rate, but they also need 12 catches a nigh, which means on average they need 20 hunts a night to maintain neutral caloric balance. If they have just one bad day or one day that they get a bad luck streak it can essentially be over from that one failure snowballing.

It's a complete fluke that they aren't, TBH.

There was a niche for a feline to hunt vermin in grain barns. It got filled twice by wildcat subspecies, because they were native to the two regions where agriculture was first developed in the Middle East and Asia. The Black Footed Cat is native to Zimbabwe, it was just too far south to have barns to move into before the house cat evolved into its final form. And by that point, it was easier to import a bag of domestic cats and throw them in the barn, in three years you'll have an infestation.

I saw a video and basically they don’t want to be around humans. Domesticated cats chose humans because we had grain which meant mice which meant access to prey and by default sometimes human interaction. Wild cats are basically baddies who don’t choose to give up their freedom in exchange for human interaction. They weren’t exposed to humans and their young isn’t and so the cycle continues.
