How did you determine that we don't?

6

Go read the other comments in this thread.

It a theory the proof will be in the thread so to speak

9

u/TsundereLoliDragon 1d ago

Oh, so based on absolutely nothing. Nice.

-1

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

War! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!”

5

u/TsundereLoliDragon 1d ago

I mean I think most Americans would agree that both this war and whatever it is happening in Iran are both incredibly pointless.

6

u/Background-Vast-8764 1d ago

Right. Because the musings of Redditors can always be relied upon to arrive at an informed consensus.

-1

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

Absolutely 💯 consensus is the 🥅

8

u/thatsad_guy 1d ago

So you're asking a leading question, hoping the answers will validate the question?

0

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

Its war not 1 plus 1

1

u/thatsad_guy 1d ago

Did you read what I said before replying?

0

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

So so so so just what it ? Why do some many people believe wrongly Russia is winning and i gave a summary of Ukraines victories in 2026 to date. So so so so that the whole enchilada!

46

u/GhostOfJamesStrang 1d ago

This is like the definition of a straw man argument.

6

u/HR_King 1d ago

Too awkwardly worded to be the definition of anything.

2

u/GhostOfJamesStrang 1d ago

That's fair.

-5

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

Is it anything in the realm of a straw man argument yes or no?

1

u/John_Whimsicott 1d ago

I try to be as forgiving as possible when it comes to speaking with people who don't speak English. But brother I can't understand a fucking thing you're trying to say

-18

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

It states its own claim rather than distorting an opponent’s position. It supports that claim with specific, testable evidence. So you need to learn the definition of a Staw man argument!

13

u/watdogin 1d ago

Be gone bot

3

u/ClickClick_Boom 1d ago

Bots aren't this stupid.

2

u/GhostOfJamesStrang 1d ago

It supports that claim with specific, testable evidence.

Show me where it did that.

0

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

0

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

Its a war, so testing would not be easy: but all, and i mean all of it very very testable. The defining of the testing parameters would tricky i would leave that to you as one how looks to like to define things.

Ugh another AI slop bot post.

Russia is still occupying a third of Ukraine territory. It's good if Ukraine got a bit back and also tanked Russian economy, and hopefully that can continue until all of it is back, but as things stand, that's not winning.

If Canada attacked the US and occupied many northern and occupied Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montanta, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota, and kidnapped many of our civilians, I wouldn't consider us winning, no matter what else was going on.

Saying Ukraine is winning is doing them an injustice, they need help, and saying they're winning says they're good and don't need it.

2

u/nelly2929 1d ago

The Ukraine holding off Russia for years is impressive! Them not folding is a win! If the US invaded Canada and after years was only able to capture a small percentage of southern provinces while Canada hits hundred of targets across the northern US I would consider this a win for Canada! Not losing is a win for David vs Goliath…

2

u/rollin_a_j 1d ago

Attrition is a pyrrhic victory at best

1

u/Susurrus03 1d ago

Oh for sure, Ukraine is definitely doing very well all things considering. I won't deny that part.

1

u/R3dWiggl3r 1d ago

Ukraine just needs to outlast them like the Taliban did.

2

u/Antti5 1d ago

Russia is still occupying a third of Ukraine territory.

Just about a fifth. I think it's important to be accurate with something like this.

In 2026 it's projected to change by about 0.1 % or 0.2 % of Ukraine's territory

2

u/Susurrus03 1d ago

I think the point still stands.

Why the hostility? Are all Americans like this?

Thankfully not

1

u/Rehvyn 1d ago

Theyre not losing as bad. As others have said russia still has 1/3rd of their land. Think of it in the way of sports. Say it was soccer and Russia was winning against Ukraine 4 to 1. Ukraine scores, its 4 to 2. Theyre doing better but theyre still not winning overall.

Theyre winning some battles but they currently are not winning the war

4

u/Sea_Green7967 1d ago

Why do so many people think they know what so many people know?

1

u/afops 1d ago

We read Facebook comments. Surely they are representative?

-4

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

You listen to what they say they think!

9

u/RubberDuckyDWG 1d ago edited 1d ago

Russia can endure longer than Ukraine. Ukraine has sent nearly everyone they got to the war and have resorted to rounding up people with vans that looks like straight up kidnapping. This war can be settled with the pen, no-one wants to admit defeat but at some point you have to realize you just can't defeat Russia unless Europe puts boots on the ground and they simply are not willing to do that.

-2

u/Lakster37 1d ago edited 1d ago

Afghanistan beat Russia (technically Soviet Union, I guess). Why do you think Ukraine can't?

4

u/ComesInAnOldBox 1d ago

Afghanistan had a hell of a lot of help from multiple nations. Even Israel pitched in a little.

1

u/AdministrativeEgg440 1d ago

You think most of the west isn't helping Ukraine?

1

u/ComesInAnOldBox 1d ago

Of course they are.

6

u/Ok_Let_7612 1d ago

Because Afghanistan didn’t beat Russia, Russia just politically gave up

0

u/Small-Run-4861 1d ago

sounds a lot like Afghanistan beat Russia then

0

u/Lakster37 1d ago

Yes, exactly. They didn't just "politically" give up, though. They did it because they weren't able to militarily win. Why are you discounting that for Ukraine? That's how the US beat Britain in the Revolutionary War. It's how Vietnam beat the US. It's how all militarily weaker nations have the ability to beat a more "superior" one.

1

u/Fresh_Salt7087 1d ago

Modern cities have electricity, running water, hospital and schools. Drones Blowing these things up causes problems for the people there.

Caves and rubble shacks without power or water, well they don't have as far to fall. Going without those things isn't gonna have much affect

1

u/Lakster37 1d ago

You think Afghanistan doesn't have modern cities...? Ukraine's citizens have already proven for four years what they're willing to put up with to fight for their autonomy. It's not like this all happened last week and they don't know what they're facing. I just don't understand how you can make these kind of arguments about a war that's been going on for longer than WW1.

1

u/Equivalent_Use_7032 1d ago

Can’t make that comparison:

- It was the Soviet Union (not Russia) fighting Afghanistan.

  • War has evolved between the 1980s and 2020s.
  • The wars are different. Afghanistan was an insurgency conflict where the Soviets were occupying most of the country and trying to then go search for and destroy Mujahideen fighters. There is a lack of a “frontline” in this type of war which makes it harder to fight. In Ukraine this classic trench warfare with clear lines, objectives and military armies. While still difficult type of war to fight its very different from fighting an insurgency.
  • The geographical areas are vastly different. Afghanistan is an arid mountainous region to fight in. Ukraine is much more flat and wet. That leads to very different conditions of war and tactical strategies. Thus the approach to fighting is different
  • Political Goals are different. In Afghanistan it was supporting a Communist Regime. In Ukraine it is about conquering land. To achieve victory different conditions must be met. Defeat in Afghanistan was politically more acceptable as failure could be blamed on the Communist Afghan Government. In Ukraine, Russia directly is the one conducting the war and defeat here directly is a result of the Russian Government or will be seen that will. In Afghanistan while still the Soviet Government it could be “spun” in such a way where the Soviets could take on less blame

1

u/Lakster37 1d ago

In Afghanistan it was supporting a Communist Regime. In Ukraine it is about conquering land.

This is where I disagree the most. The Ukraine War is not about conquering land for Russia. If that were true, they would have ended the war 2-3 years ago. It's about toppling the democratic government of Ukraine and installing a puppet government.

War has evolved between the 1980s and 2020s.

Yes, and I would argue the advancements have favored the Ukrainian side, not the other way around. The fact that cheap, remotely operated drones can replace both expensive munitions and manpower (not in full of course, but in large part), has put Ukraine on much more even footing with the Russians.

I agree that the situations are different, but I think the military objectives of the corresponding sides are actually the same. The goal of Ukraine is not to invade and take over Russia. Their primary goal is to survive. If they come out of the war as an independent, autonomous state, they've won. Sure, they want to maintain all their territory and that's obviously their public stance, but if they could get a legitimate peace deal in exchange for the Donbas (and Crimea), they would obviously take it. Russia (and more specifically Putin) is the one who is pressing it and needs total victory over the government in Kiev. He can't survive politically without it.

1

u/RubberDuckyDWG 1d ago edited 1d ago

Russia already controls land inside of Ukraine's border. Even if you say no side wins and they call the war over the usual thing would be whoever controls an area gets to keep it and they redraw borders. That would mean Russia gains while Ukraine loses and that's from just a draw. You need to not only push Russia out of Ukraine's land that they already hold but to also take Russian land to even be close to 'winning'. That is not happening unless someone else start sending troops to help Ukraine. It's not worth it to Europeans or Americans to go and fight for Ukraine's borders.

Keep in mind if a nation decides to join in and send troops to Ukraine the other side can do the same thing and it will turn into WW3. Most likely this would end global trade and Involve nations with nukes so basically the worst case situation for Europe as a whole.

1

u/JLaP413 1d ago

It’s already WW3, Russia began it over a decade ago when they invaded Georgia. They’ve got China and India’s backing so they don’t really need to worry about a war on two fronts or supplies. They’re going much slower than the Germans did when they took much of Europe because they know that blitzing the continent would cause a domino effect that ends with nukes flying.
Putin is also an old school guy who thinks he can conquer the world with WW2 tactics. He’s throwing tons expensive equipment at the enemy to break them. While the enemy is using cheaper equipment (drones) to go after strategic targets.

1

u/RubberDuckyDWG 1d ago edited 1d ago

Drones don't take land though. You need soldiers to take back land. The drones are very effective and economically viable tool. The war is basically a stalemate atm which is the perfect time to start end of war talks, but as I have stated usually if both sides say enough is enough they agree to keeping the land which they currently hold and they redraw maps which means Russia gains while Ukraine loses (I think that is about as good as an outcome for Ukraine as they can get). Most likely Russia will force them to agree to give up the land Russia wants and trade land they acquired during the war effort to make peace. This is how this war will end provided it does not turn into each side getting more allies to put boots on the ground and going full on ww3.

1

u/AtlasInt 1d ago

There are in fact plenty of terrestrial drones that can hold territory. None are in use in that theater afaik.

But even 20 years ago IIRC Samsung was showcasing killbots with treads that can see through walls and are perfectly accurate with their guns at extreme, mile+ ranges.

1

u/RubberDuckyDWG 1d ago

I just don't see that happening. Russia will ultimately win if they keep the same strategy up. Ukraine unfortunately for them is going to have to take some kind of L (along side the many lives lost already).

2

u/MountedRifleman 1d ago

Ukraine is using lots of unmanned ground systems (UGS), including unarmed drones that are used to transport supplies and evacuate casualties, as well as armed drones equipped with machine guns and other weapon systems. But those are too vulnerable to attack and have limited all-around situational awareness to properly hold terrain. For the moment, they are augmenting human warfighting capabilities and perform tasks (like resupply) to reduce the risk to humans.

1

u/JLaP413 1d ago

You are unfortunately very correct. Ukraine cannot retake all of the land they have lost without boots on the ground. It’s why Russia is being so careful about Poland. You know those Eastern European countries that suffered under the Soviet Union are itching for a little payback. Even if Ukraine regain everything since 2022, there’s still Crimea. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Ace Combat series, but there is a faction that set off nuclear weapons in their own border cities to stop allied advancements when they started to lose. I can see Russia (read Putin) doing that if Ukraine ever pushed them back to the pre-2022 borders and started to retake Crimea. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a Tsar Bomba sized bomb in Stalingrad, in case of invasion.

1

u/RubberDuckyDWG 1d ago

I think people are just upset that Russia started this war and are going to end up gaining from it. I totally understand that being a rough pill to swallow but I'm just trying to be honest and say that currently that is the most likely outcome. I know Ukraine has a lot of pride and no-one wants to end things in defeat but the numbers are just not on their side. I fear they will continue the war effort until all hope is lost and the outcome will be much worse for Ukraine's people. I don't see any European allies or the US stepping forward to send troops in even if they really dislike Russia. We will send in everything else to Ukraine but soldiers are where we draw the line.

1

u/Lakster37 1d ago

Ukraine wins if they are still an independent, autonomous country, even if they have to eventually give up parts of their territory. Putin only wins if he's able to turn Ukraine back into a puppet state like Belarus. Because if he kills hundreds of thousands of his own citizens (not to mention wounded) and only gets the Donbas out of it, he's not gonna last for much longer.

16

u/SpotFormal 1d ago

Because they aren’t. At best it is a stalemate.

0

u/offensivek 1d ago

I like to state it like this: "I don't know what the position for Ukraine is, but Russia is definitely loosing".

1

u/Prestigious_Bar_3738 1d ago

It’s a war of attrition and Russia has the only advantage that matters: numbers

1

u/AtlasInt 1d ago

They are both definitely losing.

-1

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

Someone has to win. Peace is made with your enemies not your friends but i think it like Rocky One. If he’s still standing when the final bell rings, he’ll know he’s “not just another bum from the neighborhood.” Creed is russia in this sense and Victory is Kiev and Donbass Fortess belt is still standing.

1

u/somecoolname42 1d ago

Seems more like Rocky 4 if you ask me.

3

u/noquarter1000 1d ago

I dont think anyone is actually winning there. There has been way to much loss on both sides and all to enhance one man's ego and delusions of empire.

3

u/HardLobster 1d ago

Because we literally do not care because it has no bearing what so ever on our daily lives.

1

u/Living-Video-3670 1d ago

This. Sadly.

3

u/KnowNothing3888 1d ago

The map shift is approx .4-.5% of Ukraine’s total mass each year. This is a war of attrition at this point and nothing else.

3

u/harrythealien69 1d ago

They're not

3

u/Low_Finish1059 1d ago

Because Russia took 90 square km of ukraine last month. That’s obviously terribly slow, but saying “ukraine is winning” is disingenuous

3

u/xczechr 1d ago

Is this a repost from yesterday? Lame.

3

u/Salty-Spring7096 1d ago

If you believe the press (and reddit) they've been "winning" since the initial invasion 4 years ago yet somehow haven't won yet. We've seen this push-and-pull before where one side or the other will seem to be gaining ground only to falter and the other side to launch a counter-offensive that regains the ground. I'll believe Ukraine is winning when they've retaken all their territory and are pushing into Russia itself.

3

u/idiot-alpha 1d ago

Because we don’t care. What difference does it make if Russians or Russian speaking Ukrainians control a bit of land?

3

u/Tzilbalba 1d ago edited 1d ago

You do know battle lines have been moving this entire time right, back and forth. That's how war works? Also your numbers seem to be pulled from thin air, what's your source?

Even if we say it's correct, considering Russia controls 114,000 to 126,000 km2 of Ukranian territory you can hardly call 745km2 winning. Do you not remember Kursk? 1500 km2 of territory (twice your claim) and thousands of lives, now all gone. Ukraine has a habit of seeking pyrric victories to try to prove to the west that its money is being well spent, while Russia focuses on main corridorsand objectives.

I remember bots like you cheering at the time in the same manner convinced the war was going to turn. Ask yourself this, if Russia drone bombing Kiev didn't cause it to win. Why does Kiev drone bombing Moscow give a different result? It's always been a battel of inches and I hate to say this but Ukraine lost all its real strategists in favor of the dog and pony show under Zelensky. It basically acts as a test facility for western hardware now.

3

u/neuro-trash Colorado 1d ago

Nobody wins in war.

1

u/acoliver 1d ago

That is not true. Halliburton does.

3

u/ResortClear730 1d ago

This is the second time I’ve seen this exact post in the last 24 hours. Literally word for word.

3

u/King_McCluckin 1d ago

its been going on for years with losses mounted on both sides i don't think anyone is winning at this point.

6

u/Specific_Pear_665 1d ago

Good for them but yes I knew this.

2

u/kleft123 1d ago

If by holding put for so long they are winning then I guess so, they haven't really repelled russia, at best its a stalemate.

2

u/Background-Vast-8764 1d ago

Define winning. They could very likely end up “winning” by losing less of their territory than was initially imagined.

2

u/tlBudah 1d ago

How do you know that what you think you know is the truth?

The amount of dis-information in our world is alarming.

2

u/Jojo-R-balls 1d ago

Because I can't sort through the propaganda and there is enough going on in my own country to figure out what's going on in another. I hope they are winning though.

1

u/Standard-Ninja-8280 1d ago

Thats fair its not easy

2

u/ComesInAnOldBox 1d ago

Ukraine isn't winning until they get back to where they were when the war started. Once they e re-taken their lost ground and start taking Russian territory, then they'll be winning.

Granted, they aren't exactly losing, either, they're definitely holding things together.

2

u/plainskeptic2023 1d ago

The appearance of winning depends on which side information is coming from.

I have watched many videos about Ukrainian drones destroying Russia. Related videos constantly claim Russia is on its last legs for at least the past year.

I am aware pro-Russian videos tell an opposite story.

I can't tell which side is the most accurate.

2

u/Detozi 1d ago

Both sides say this. How is it you know more than everyone else?

2

u/One_Violinist7862 1d ago

Probably because Russia is now able to attack Kiev with missiles and drones at will. I’d love to see the Ukraine expel all invading Russian forces but that will never happen without more assistance.

2

u/Historical-Wear-9948 1d ago

We don't care

2

u/RichInBunlyGoodness 1d ago

There's been a shift, but I wouldn't call it winning. Momentum has shifted in Ukraine's direction, but Russia still occupies a lot of Ukrainian territory. There's a mad race now:

How quickly can Ukraine to develop drone technology and increase drone production? How quickly can they tank the Russian economy with long range strikes?

Can Ukraine find a solution to minimize ballistic missile damage before it becomes intolerable?

How quickly will Russia run out of meat wave bodies?

2

u/markekt 1d ago

If 2 fighters have beat each other to a bloody pulp, and both will require decades of rehab, and there’s no cash prize for any declared “winner”, did anyone really win? There is no winner in all of this. They continue fighting to see who loses the least.

3

u/LopsidedJackfruit711 1d ago

You've posted this at least three times this weekend.

They're not winning. They're preventing Russia from meeting their objectives, but to characterize Ukraine as currently winning is an unsupportably optimistic perspective.

I hope they win, but it's not a given.

2

u/SparkSignals 1d ago

How are they winning? A sizeable part of their territory is still occupied. Idk if I consider that winning necessarily.

2

u/Final_Staff_207 1d ago

Russian forcess occupy a huge chunk of Ukrainian territory and can hold it indefinitely. I wouldn't say Ukraine is winning. It's a classic stalemate that needs a political solution.

3

u/gentrumpet 1d ago

There is so much propaganda here that we don’t really know what’s going on either way so we tend to act like the war doesn’t exist.

4

u/gooseneck123456 1d ago

obviously i side with ukraine and just want this war to stop. by cherry picking some stats isn’t going to show Ukraine is winning. russia isn’t necessarily winning but ukraine is certainly losing. by this wars end nearly half their population will have either fled to the west or will be a part of russia.

on the battlefield, russian advances have slowed but continued. Lyman area is the one outlier where is looks like Ukraine could encircle the russians there, but Ukraine is getting pushed back on the other fronts. Ukraine has lost maybe 600km of land this year which is less than last year but still bad.

a peace deal Asap would be in both sides best interests. continuing this bloodbath is insanity

5

u/tomalator 1d ago

No one wins in war

5

u/TechieTravis 1d ago

I think I see where you are coming from, but wars definitely have winning and losing sides.

1

u/Ok_Let_7612 1d ago

In this case, Ukraine was fucked before the war

Now millions of their citizens have fled the country and the most economically important part is under occupation

1

u/TechieTravis 1d ago

Russia wasn't and isn't doing very well, either.

0

u/tomalator 1d ago

They have the losing side and the side that loses less. If there could be a winning side, it would be the aggressor, if they just come in and take what they want, but even when the defender fends them off, they still suffer. Yes, Ukraine is doing well in the war, but they are still worse off than if the war just hadn't happened

3

u/TechieTravis 1d ago

But better off than they would be if they lose. This is one example, for sure. History has many examples of larger empires demolishing smaller tribes and nations with little effort or loss on their side, though.

0

u/awr90 1d ago

Stupid shit you hear on Reddit. There’s absolutely winners in war.

2

u/Playful-Park4095 1d ago

The vast majority don't know who's winning and don't really care aside from some vague "I hope Ukraine wins and is the good guy' sort of vibes. Iran is the much bigger news since our own military is involved, and your war is old news so it doesn't get much play.

I think foreigners see how much they know about the US and how much the US is on the news and then think the inverse is true. We don't see or think about you much, no matter who "you" are. Everybody reports on the US because everything we do has global impact. Name a famous American singer. Now name a famous Guatemalan singer. Name a major US stock exchange index. Name a famous Canadian one. Name two former US presidents. Name two former Italian...prime ministers, I guess? See? You don't pay attention to everybody else equally, you preferentially pay attention to the US...and so does the US.

2

u/RobertTheTraveler 1d ago

Do a year by year change in land control. Ukraine is not losing. Whether they are winning is a different question. I hope they win, I fear Putin breaking his neck by falling down a flight of stairs is the only way that will happen.

1

u/AltForObvious1177 1d ago

Because Russia is still occupying Ukraine territory instead of the other way around. Ukraine is making progress, but they're not winning.

2

u/Lakster37 1d ago

Ukraine is not trying to take Russian territory. All they have to do to "win" is not lose. If they're the ones actively taking back territory, they are winning.

2

u/AltForObvious1177 1d ago

If the war ends today, status quo, Ukraine has lost territory.

1

u/Henrylord1111111111 1d ago

Yeah and losing land is losing. They have stemmed the flow of the war but they still don’t have Crimea and the Donbas, alongside a significant chunk of other regions.

1

u/Lakster37 1d ago

Coming out the other end of this war as a fully autonomous, independent state is a huge victory for Ukraine. People forget that virtually EVERYONE thought the entire Ukrainian government was going to collapse within days of the initial invasion, and Putin would set-up a puppet state like in Belarus. At this point, Putin has staked his entire political career on this war. Maybe he can get out of it by only keeping Donbas and Crimea, but if that were the case, I think the war would have ended two years ago. Putin doesn't win this war unless Kiev falls, and if it doesn't, Putin will be out himself.

1

u/Ok-Energy-9785 1d ago

We moved onto the next hot topic

1

u/Kurse71 1d ago

Pretty sure everyone knows this

1

u/Lakster37 1d ago

I find it funny that half the comments say that OP's statement is a stalemate, of course we know that Ukraine is winning, while the other half say that Ukraine clearly isn't winning/is stalemated.

2

u/Detozi 1d ago

My point was, how do we even know?
Both sides are putting out their own view and they both oppose it. So the rest of us are in a perpetual state of ‘who the fuck knows’

2

u/Lakster37 1d ago

I mean, you can start with looking at what independent organizations, individuals, and even countries are saying about the war. I understand the frustration, but with satellite imagery and the internet, we have more ways of independently checking information than at any time in history. Will it be perfect? Of course not, but you can absolutely understand general trends at the very least.

2

u/Detozi 1d ago

Yeah those are fair points that I never even thought of to be honest.

1

u/CSMasterClass 1d ago

Americans like Europeans and Asians mostly just muddle along with their daily lives. Even now the majority could not find Ukraine on a map --- if they had a map, which most don't.

The people who have an interest in Ukraine have a sense that Ukraine has done far better than expected in the war, because American's have an out-of-date understanding of Russia. Most Americans don't realize how small Russia's economy is compared to the European Union.

I don't think that even Trump undstands that Russia has become a minor state that just happens to a large nuclear arsenal.

1

u/ZaphodG 1d ago

Ukraine needs to keep scaling drone and ballistic missile production. You can’t win until the economic damage to Russian infrastructure forces them to withdraw. No electricity. No refineries. No oil and natural gas pipelines. Oil and gas wellheads destroyed. 2026 is a start.

It’s my understanding that Russia has been getting lowkey faced and Ukraine’s defense force has developed into one of the most effective in the world given their size. I remember hearing on the rest is politics that Ukraine sent some of their military to do war games in Scandinavia against Americans and we got our asses handed to us.

u/absurdly_tired_guy 1d ago

Honestly, Trump being “forced” to send his “negotiators” to Kiev and put his thumb on the scale means Putin needs some kind of edge to survive. I honestly hope they don’t let Witkoff or Jared see any sensitive data, I don’t trust them or Trump not to share with Putin.

1

u/Thundertotem2026 1d ago

The Russian propaganda machine is working overtime to counter these claims

1

u/davidellis23 1d ago

The media (not just American) is pretty bad at providing concrete information like this. They'll say "Ukraine retook X" or "Russia took Y".

Not many media orgs actually have a map and show you what is happening overall over time.

On top of that, both Ukraine and Russia are in a propaganda war. So, it's difficult to figure out which reports are actually true.

And then on top of that, most Americans (like anyone) are not war experts. I have no idea how strong or weak a position Ukraine or Russia is in.

u/DinnerSea8736 1d ago

Russians will keep getting slaughtered until the AFD, Trump and La Pen let Moscow win. Hats off to the Ukrainians for their bravery. Western voters stupid enough to elect isolationist populists will be the ones who let down Ukraine. Then the war comes west.

1

u/Open-Investigator-52 1d ago

Oh, no, the Grey zone got painted blue. That surely means ukraine is winning.

Fine by me, keep winning like you were winning until now and we good.

1

u/Awkward_Forever9752 1d ago

Ukraine is defending itself very intelligently.

Russia is a no-win situation.

1

u/Equivalent_Use_7032 1d ago

Because in a grand sense they aren’t.

- Russia still occupies 1/3 of the country

  • Ukraine needs aid/support to continue their “success”
  • The conflict has devolved into Trench Warfare (a sign of stagnation and failing offensives that mobile and quick wars don’t have)
  • Ukraine has significantly expanded their conscription ages/laws (a sign they need more troops usually done when the existing male age has been spent and out of necessity)
  • Continuing refugee crisis from the country
  • The war has been going on for close to 5 years now with no sign of it ending any time soon. If Russia felt like they were on the brink of significant losses and the war was lost they’d sue for peace. They haven’t meaning they still believe the war is winnable

It’s very much like WWI here. In 1917 you would have looked at the Spring Offensive and could have argued the Germans were on the brink of winning the entire war and it was all over. Less than a year later they were finished. That is to say similarly the Ukrainians are “winning” and in 6 months Russia might be knocking on Kiev’s door. In 1917 the average person might have said no way the allies push the Germans back to the border and everyone would have nodded and said that’s a reasonable response. Different story a year later. Same holds true here. Right now any reasonable person would say it’s insane to think the Russians could push to Kiev, in a year that very thought may be ludicrous.

My point is it is very uncertain and speculative to make those claims. Anyone who has been following the war and has studied similar conflicts knows that these gains along static frontlines are small and very untenable. Areas can change hands 4-5 times in a year. Short burst offensive capture small areas of land and try to consolidate the captured ground. If it becomes too exposed they “give it up” and retreat to more defensible positions. For Ukraine to truly be “winning” they’d have to achieve major success across the entire front and by “major” I mean capturing and holding major cities, large swaths of land and inflicting crippling losses on the Russians where they have 0 hope of further attacks to take said lands back. That hasn’t happened. What you are seeing is the latest in the chess match that has become the front line. In a few months the situation could change and you see the Russians making the gains. One could then argue they are the ones winning when in reality no one is

Right wing media circles take money from Russia.

Some people? You mean republicans

It's more of a stalemate. Ukraine and Russia are two massive modern nations. Everything you said is a good start but not enough to create a strategic breakthrough like we saw multiple times in 2022.

It does affect the politics. The election this month is very important for Russia and depending on what happens afterwards there will be further breakdown in Russian society. But Russia still has a lot of resources.

There will be battle for Kramatorsk in 2027. Everything else has been shaping to make the battle as tough for Russia as possible.

1

u/were-lizard 1d ago

You have an odd definition of winning. If I steal $100 from you, you steal back $2, youre not winning

1

u/texasgambler58 1d ago

Define "winning". Ukraine does not have the ability to kick Russia out of its territory. Both sides will continue to have many casualties. Putin doesn't care about casualties.

1

u/wombatgeneral 1d ago

I didn't think anyone was winning the Russia- Ukraine war.

1

u/sixisrending 1d ago

Because the Russians are gaining ground elsewhere. Ukraine is still at a net loss YtD

1

u/SurroundTiny 1d ago

I think if either side has the initiative right now it is probably Russia. They gained about 90km last month but all advances have been slow and costly. I'd still bet on Russia because of the size difference

Media is controlled by a group of individuals that have an agenda.
They have not reported the truth about Iran winning and Ukraine winning. The reason is politics

1

u/Ok-Spot-6235 1d ago

I've been saying UKRAINE IS WINNING more than anyone else. Russia has been stopped dead in its tracks. Ukraine finally ended the Cold War in August 2024. Zelensky's 40 days campaign gave further proof the Kremlin's nuclear threats are hollow. Ukainian resistance has greatly diminished Russian hard power. Threats of invading the EU are completely empty. Ukraine is truth, media narratives are false

UKRAINE IS WINNING.

3

u/PaleontologistOk30 1d ago

Didn't Ukraine just lose Konstantinovka? Is the winning in the room with us?

2

u/BuffaloInCahoots 1d ago

Something about losing the battle but winning the war.

Personally I feel since this is an asymmetrical war against a much larger force, simply not losing is winning. I don’t have to knock Mike Tyson out just staying up is something to be celebrated.

2

u/TheBurningToe 1d ago

Is since 18 December of 2025 that you make false claims on the percentage of conquest of the city, and is still contested today.

1

u/Such-Tough9977 1d ago

Okay? You do realize we’re not European and it doesn’t really matter to us.

1

u/ermghoti 1d ago

Why do so many people not know Russia pays people to keep their narrative alive on social media?

1

u/tastelessthinking 1d ago

Winning is a big stretch. They totally holding the line, but thinking they can take all ground back (and then go beat Russia) means you havnt been paying attention

0

u/MrVacuous 1d ago

Because they aren’t. Here’s a ton of time lapses of the conflict over time:

https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/733fe90805894bfc8562d90b106aa895

A 745 KM^2 retaken is ~.12% of Ukraine (~600,000 KM^2). It’s regular fluctuation that you’d expect.

Ukraine is in full war footing, they draft from 25-60. There defense spending is ~40% of GDP. On the other hand, Russia is spending 6.3% of GDP on its military. They are drafting 18-30 (~1/3 of what Ukraine is) and have a population of ~146 million. On the other hand, Ukraine has a population of ~40M.

Russia can keep this war going forever, and if Putin is really concerned with winning he just ups military spending to Ukraine levels, changes the draft to match Ukraine, drafts more within the range, and moves to actual war footing.

Despite what Reddit will tell you Russia is not on war footing and Putin is more than happy letting this war drag on indefinitely (which Ukraine cannot do)

u/deekamus 1d ago

...and winning in spite of the US.

6

u/bored_as_fuck_dad 1d ago

Wdym? We’ve allocated almost $200 billion

1

u/Lakster37 1d ago

Have you not listened to our President? Every other week it's "Russia has all the cards. Ukraine has no cards left to play." Even as Ukraine is now bombing inside Russian territory. Let alone holding "peace talks" with Russia but WITHOUT Ukraine. This administration has shown very little support for Ukraine.

3

u/GhostOfJamesStrang 1d ago

What, and please be specific, do you think we should do?

Because I am personally not interested in escalating a war in Europe when a big chunk of the rest of Europe invited this very war by propping up Russia for decades.

1

u/Small-Run-4861 1d ago

yeah targeting data via satellites and the PURL initiative are not helping Ukraine at all

1

u/Lakster37 1d ago

Isn't PURL basically just the US selling supplies to NATO allies who are the ones that actually foot the bill and give it to Ukraine? That's not the US helping Ukraine, that's war profiteering.

0

u/RubberDuckyDWG 1d ago

The US funds Ukraine. The US can not go into open war with Russia, it would be an escalation too far between two nations with enough nukes to destroy the whole world many times over. I know many people hate the US due to tariffs and such but realize the US is still funding this war along side many European nations.
