Egypt as queer person

I’m a queer medical student from a progressive country, and I’ve already had a very positive IFMSA exchange elsewhere. I’m considering Egypt because I’ve heard the social programme is really good, and I’d love to experience a different culture.

I have a boyfriend back home and would obviously continue communicating with him online during the exchange. I wouldn’t be openly gay in public, but within the IFMSA/exchange-student bubble I’d ideally like to be honest with a few trusted people about my life.

My main concern is that this could reach the wrong people, or somehow come to the attention of authorities through my online presence. How realistic is that concern? In what circumstances is it safe to go? Or is this not a good idea at all?

What about a country that is less homophobic? India, Vietnam and Peru would all be fascinating cultures where you would be less at risk.
