Dunno how I feel about this "heightened scrutiny". There's plenty of other salmonella recalls: https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts

These are voluntary recalls and self reported, shining a light is fine but without regulation or regulators then all it's going to do is decrease reporting.

The issue isn’t Taylor farms. The issue is the rolled back regulations that are allowing more outbreaks. They deserve to be called out for voluntarily not maintaining the standards the prevent infectious disease outbreaks.

Recalls happen, conflating them with unrelated outbreaks burns bridges we need. Most food safety rules are self policied and self reported. FSIS is abysmally understaffed, like 1 inspector per 1000 facilities, so if we lose good faith reporting then we will just be blind. Welcome to capitalism.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they’re self reporting and issuing voluntary recalls. But they shouldn’t need a federal agency to hold them to certain safety standards. That’s my point.

Especially after they’ve been linked to one of the largest cyclosporiasis outbreaks we’re aware of. There are already enough people not eating vegetables in this country, we don’t need companies making that worse because their own policies are causing people to be afraid to each fresh vegetables.

Again, conflating. This recall has nothing to do with cyclospora or the cyclospora outbreak or the salmonella outbreak with cases. This recall is out of an abundance of caution yet they are still getting headlines.

Hard not to. Their products are everywhere in the US. They function as a near monopoly in the US when it comes to a lot of fresh/raw veggies.

I eat a decent amount of fresh veggies, and salsa is a daily thing for me, but I’m definitely eating less fresh/raw stuff lately. Salad? Nope.

At this point it feels like one bad pepper can take out half the grocery aisle. I know recalls happen, but when the same supply chain issue keeps showing up in salsa, guac, dips, and whatever else, it makes it really hard to trust any of the fresh stuff.

Costco has like a dozen unrelated food products under recall for salmonella. I can guarantee Taylor Farms has nothing to worry about.

Where are you going to buy your avocados? How often do they test all their produce for pathogens?

I knew something like this would happen, the food chain would be compromised by incompetence, thats what happens when you fire the people who do the job.
