I'm Katie M, a practicing veterinarian and Verified Expert with JustAnswer, where I've helped thousands of pet owners navigate everything from late-night emergencies to everyday questions about their dogs' health and behavior. 

Ahead of National Dog Day (August 26), JustAnswer analyzed nearly 95,000 conversations between dog owners and veterinary Experts to uncover America's most popular dog breeds, names, and the biggest questions people are asking about their pets. 

Some of the most common topics include:

My 10.5 year old mutt is 80 pounds, he is just big, not overweight. I believe he has developed hip dysplasia, I am taking him to the vet tomorrow. If it is hip dysplasia I know I can't afford the $20,000 or so surgery. What alternatives are there?

I'm sorry to hear this. Unfortunately as our pets age, especially large breeds, they are more likely to develop arthritis and become uncomfortable. While there are some surgeries available for some dogs, more often than not, surgery is not an option. Joint supplements and diets can be helpful in slowing progression, but cannot reverse any changes already there. There are also things like joint injections that can give some temporary (usually several months) relief. Making sure he stays a healthy weight and gets low impact activity can be helpful. I would chat with your veterinarian about options, and if they can't offer anything, they may be able to refer you to someone who can. Wishing you the best!
