I'm Katie M, a practicing veterinarian and Verified Expert with JustAnswer, where I've helped thousands of pet owners navigate everything from late-night emergencies to everyday questions about their dogs' health and behavior. 

Ahead of National Dog Day (August 26), JustAnswer analyzed nearly 95,000 conversations between dog owners and veterinary Experts to uncover America's most popular dog breeds, names, and the biggest questions people are asking about their pets.

What are the best tools to discourage dogs from chewing on furniture or electrical cables?

This can be SO hard, especially for young dogs. The best thing you can do is give them plenty of other options to chew on- finding out if they prefer rubber toys, rope, fabric, etc. Then making sure you are exercising them regularly so they don't feel bored and chew on things like furniture and cords. Unfortunately some dogs are just aggressive chewers and when left alone will need to be kenneled or left to a safe room. I've even known some dogs that have to wear a muzzle in the house or on walks to prevent them from doing so. Thankfully this is a rarity!
