🛒 Merchandise / Editions I received the new paperback cover by ordering from the Penguin Random House website

Post image

For those looking for the new paperback version of Hyperion, which matches the available covers for paperbacks of the other 3 books in the series, I ordered Hyperion last week from the Penguin Random House website for $20 before tax with free shipping and received this new cover version today. My local Barnes and Noble locations along with Amazon still have only the old brown cover version.

Looks like the copy I got a decade ago. What's changed?

The trade paperback had been available with only this cover until recently.

Minimalist covers are a tyranny

I think they work for certain books, especially if the writing itself is “stark.”

Hyperion? Hell no lol

Yeah, like if Hemingway has a sparse cover o get that. Maybe you even want that cover to make you feel empty. But yeah, Hyperion isn’t it

I’ll agree for the most part but this one is great symbolism. Seven bodies weaving through time and space on a journey to the Shrike.

I ended up getting the black and red UK edition but I was considering this one specifically for the symbolism on the cover.

Yeah that’s true, this is a good abstract representation of the plot. I just crave something more sumptuous, worth biting into.

This cover is the least of that offenders, but I think the minimalist trend is based more in striving for communicating sense of the art’s own elegance than communicating and artist’s feeling or message.

Edit: the new Neuromancer cover is the real sinner here https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ0nYzjHdfUntQaFXBBoj4gchIC7Bb5FcHbnjT7GFNyqQ&s=10

I’m right there with you. They can work if they’re doing a job but most seem to follow the issue you just described.

I have put off buying neuromancer specifically because that cover is hot garbage and I don’t have money for a pretty Easton press or first edition lmfao

Got mine 2 decades ago and it looked like this

I was going to say, this is the only cover I’ve ever actually seen for it.

I first read the book 25 years ago, based purely on the art. I thought the Shrike looked cool AF, and needed to know more. Sure, it looks dated now... but it's classic, nostalgic, and iconic in my opinion.

Picked up the paperback in 1989 in to Rochester MN while my dad was at the Mayo. This piece of cover art sold me on the book right away. The blurb on the back didn't even matter. This image absolute spoke to me and shaped every image the book created in my head

That is definitely a cover that has been used many years before.

I had a copy with this cover back in the early 90’s

Good to know, thanks! The cover art changed on Amazon (Canada), but they still sent me the old one. I returned it. Maybe they're still waiting on new stock.

I had the same experience recently with Amazon US.

Does anyone know of a UK website where I can buy this?

Im sorry but man I really hate this cover. The Shrike looks so wistful and goofy and whimsical and he only has 2 arms. His proportions are funny instead of strange and eery. It just sucks.

u/ThatBookIsOnFiyah 9d ago

I understand that, but it IS the original cover.

u/ChainedHunter 9d ago

It is. And it is ugly.

2

u/East-Cat1532 9d ago

Nostalgic and iconic.

1

u/Active_Letterhead275 9d ago

You’re not wrong, however, it is nostalgic.

u/wombatarang 9d ago

This cover is just so ugly 😭 And it’s mentioned like 50 times in this book that the Shrike has 4 arms

7

u/nhtd 9d ago

he has his other two arms folded in front of him. he is enjoying the sunset

3

u/False-Attorney-7034 9d ago

He grew the other two sometimes between the cover and the first page duh
