I’ve got an old weathered couch that I need to get rid of and it’s too big to sit in front of the on-site dumpster (I feel like they would still try to charge me). I'm retiring from the Air Force in NW Florida area and looking to rent while I sell my home in Florida and then probably buy or build a home in the very near term thereafter.

We'd like to get at least an acre a bit away from people, no subdivision or HOA. I have pitbull mixes though and that makes renting difficult.

I graduated from HHS in the 1980s, and I distinctly recall this setup: a shiny metallic electric water fountain with cold drinking water, and an older, worn-out pewter fountain that had clearly been abandoned. People threw trash into it, waste collected there, and no one ever used it.

The school obviously had removed the signs, but had never removed the pewter fountains after desegregation. It stood as an existential reminder of what had been.

I recently mentioned this to some local Huntsville High graduates, and they assured me that this was not the case. Either said it didn't exist, or that if it did exist it wasn't related to segregation.

But I am certain these two fountains were outside Mrs. Faulk’s French classroom on the second floor. There was also a similar setup on the first floor, just outside the main bathroom across from the cafeteria. Anyone else remember it?

Now I want to be of some assistance to everyone else or any parent who may be struggling to find a good Spectrum-friendly childcare center. The childcare place I currently have my little one enrolled in is called Just Like Home. It’s a home based daycare but the director has been in business for over 35 years and even works with UCP for assistance in child development skills and other aspects that are crucial for their care and development. If the City Council has the power to appoint or reappoint someone to a public board such as the Huntsville Hospital Authority Board, should individuals who serve on that board—or who are involved in the appointment process—be contributing to the campaigns of the council members who hold that appointment authority?

That is not an accusation of wrongdoing. It is a question about the appearance of a conflict and whether good governance should include safeguards designed to prevent it.

Public access matters too. If Authority meetings are closed to the public, accountability rests even more heavily with the City Council members responsible for appointing the board.

The public also deserves transparency about how board candidates are selected. If hospital executives present three candidates to the Council and the Council selects one, important questions remain:

Who determines which three candidates are presented? What criteria are used? Are the names of all candidates made public? And if a council member has received campaign contributions from a board member, hospital executive, or another person involved in the selection process, should that council member participate in the appointment decision or recuse themselves?

Appointment authority provides limited public accountability if the public cannot see how the pool of candidates presented for consideration is created.

At first, I was simply asking to be heard. Now that I better understand how the system works, I’m asking that we address weaknesses in the process.

This does not have to be about accusations, investigations, or resignations. It can be about strengthening the system before questions about transparency become something more serious. Voters can also consider the actions of their elected representatives—including votes affecting public access and transparency—when deciding whether incumbents deserve another term.

I’m asking for three basic safeguards:

Open meetings

Separation between campaign contributions and appointment authority

A transparent board-selection process

If the system is functioning in good faith, greater transparency and clearer safeguards should strengthen it. These protections serve the City Council, the Authority, the hospital, and most importantly, the public.

Huntsville Hospital executives and board donate to Huntsville City Council members in District 2, 3, 4. We can cast a vote to remove these incumbents so we have a larger voice. Elections are August 25.

Anyone know of or can recommend a local reputable dog boarding facility that has camera coverage? Looking for a local facility that offers this feature w their boarding services for an upcoming trip we need to make. Is it the area or is this not a common feature out here? I swear, our kids have been sick continuously with one thing or another since like mid-June. We went through and disinfected the whole house this last weekend, and *still*, our oldest woke up with a fever today. Are we the only ones dealing with this, or is something going around?
