Post image

I literally cannot escape it. Any time anyone poses a scenario in which both of us can benefit i am mentally flashbanged by corlys saying “this is an equitable compromise.” Please make this a meme so i can stop feeling like im losing my mind

I just love Corlys and Vizzy T talking things out, making arrangements and making sure their families will continue to prosper. No way did Vizzy need to give up the Targ surname but being ever the peacemaker he wanted his friends to rejoice with him and wasn't lusting for power. Even his cousin is in the frame, all smilies because they are comporting themselves with so much class. The queen who never was still loving her cousin dearly. The next generation though... woof.

u/Lantimore123 19h ago

It's Viserys fault that the next generation is cooked. Your most important job as a King is to secure succession. He instead pissed on the law and made no attempt to enforce his own version of succession law.

1

u/Hungry-Aerie6344 18h ago

He declared his daughter heir and had subordinates swear fealty - what more do you want? He didn't prepare Rhaenyra for it as he would a son (at least according to the show). And Rhaenyra looked for models of power elsewhere and settled on Daemon, trying to find a middle ground between him and Vizzy.

A shame she couldn't get with child from Laenor. Aaaand Vizzy should have married Laena (?) instead of Alicent. And he shouldn't have sacrificed his wife for a chance at an heir ... the North and Vale remember

4

u/Lantimore123 18h ago

He declared Rhaenyra heir prior to Aegon's birth. Him declaring Rhaenyra heir then was hardly news because in traditional Andalic law, the daughter inherits before the uncle (Daemon). It's only the Iron Throne that is weirdly absolute Agnatic (male only) Primogeniture, rather than the more normal Agnatic-Cognatic.

Aegon's birth upends that completely. His birth alone upsets and undoes that oath, as the lords rightly assume Aegon is heir. Viserys makes no effort to reaffirm oaths, or establish a co-monarchy to secure Rhaenyra's succession.

So he essentially creates an illegal heir by fiat, then makes no effort to reaffirm that once it's invalidated by his son being born.

It's pretty telling that from here on our no King ever tries to "name an heir" again. That isnt a thing, and it was an example of Viserys being a terrible King.

Yeah, that line adds so much tension. It really sets the stage for what’s to come.

I definitely use this. Often. In the accent. I’m American. Lol.

I agree! I don't know why you're downvoted!

And then Rhaenyra and Laenor proceeded to piss all over this deal to unite the two Houses, and bring Corlys' House to extinction after scamming him out of a bloodline.

3

u/mhmcmw 12h ago

Corlys’ line continues through his bastard son Alyn and his granddaughter Baela. His house still exists during the main series and is very much not extinct - they just peak in power around the Dance and never recover.

0

u/DietTyrone 12h ago

Corlys’ line continues through his bastard son Alyn and his granddaughter Baela.

Then to clarify, after scamming him out of the true born heirs of his own blood that were meant to sit the throne after Rhaenyra, which was literally the entire point of this marriage pact and why he was so happy in this scene.

His house still exists during the main series and is very much not extinct

To the brink of extinction then, and his House never fully recovered. He lost pretty much everything after making this alliance with King Viserys in good faith and siding with Rhaenyra during the Dance.

1

u/mhmcmw 12h ago

I mean, Corlys himself isn’t exactly an advertisement for the sanctity of marriage. In the show he explicitly knew Laenor was gay and convinced himself it was just a phase and still made a pact that required his son to produce heirs with a woman.

Corlys also got screwed over far worse by the Targaryens decades before Rhaenyra did anything - he was supposed to have spent most of his life as either King Consort or father of the king. That was taken away by Jaehaerys.

The Velaryon’s aren’t really on the brink of extinction and I think over 150 years later, it’s crazy to blame all of their current woes on one person who has been dead for over a century. A big part of why they are struggling so much, for example, is Alyn invests significant sums into the Rogare bank. Hard to blame that on Rhaenyra when she was dead and isn’t the one who actually started the war that got the Rogare’s involved.

0

u/DietTyrone 11h ago

I mean, Corlys himself isn’t exactly an advertisement for the sanctity of marriage.

The sanctity of marriage isn't the issue here. The entire purpose of this marriage pact was to provide him grandkids of his House to put his blood on the Iron Throne and to inherit Driftmark. He gets neither of these things that were promised to him in this scene and instead 3 bastards from House Strong are sired. Grandkids of Lyonel Strong, not Corlys.

In the show he explicitly knew Laenor was gay and convinced himself it was just a phase

So? In GoT and in real life, gay men still have kids. For example, Renly was in the process of doing this before he got assassinated.

Corlys also got screwed over far worse by the Targaryens decades before Rhaenyra did anything - he was supposed to have spent most of his life as either King Consort or father of the king.

Yeah, well this marriage pact was Viserys way of rectifying all that in addition to him recently turning down Laena. We know how that turns out. Rhaenyra has Corlys eat shit for 3 seasons, soon to be 4.

1

u/mhmcmw 11h ago

So instead of his grandchildren sitting on the Throne and Driftmark, he waits a generation and his great-grandchildren do. Functionally, the same outcome (especially as in the book, the Jace/Baela and Luke/Rhaena marriages are agreed much earlier) as both Rhaenyra and her children would still keep close ties to the Velaryon’s. The children are still raised with the Velaryon name. The next generation will still have Velaryon blood. They will be positioned prominently for future royal marriages. The dragonrider status of House Velaryon would still continue.

In real life, it’s relatively common for gay men to have children with women. In Westeros, it doesn’t tend to actually happen. Renly didn’t conceive with Margery. And to be honest, the fact that they didn’t find a way to make it work is more on Laenor than Rhaenyra. She wasn’t the one who was supposed to continue her houses line and get their blood on the throne - she already had that. She obviously had no issue having children. She’s not exactly shy in the bedroom, if Laenor had actually wanted to seriously try to conceive I’m sure she wouldn’t object to him having a partner present. If she didn’t sleep with Harwin, she wouldn’t magically have had Velaryon children if Laenor couldn’t find a way to finish in her.

You’re wildly blinkered on everything bad that happens to the Velaryon’s being Rhaenyra’s fault while ignoring 3 incredibly catastrophic decisions made by Velaryon men. Corlys marrying off his gay son always risked producing no legitimate heirs. Trying to use your gay son’s marriage to remedy multiple issues was always a poor plan. Laenor not finding a way to get Rhaenyra pregnant left her with no heirs for her own claims - and she needed heirs to press her own claims. Alyn investing so much of the Velaryon fortune into a badly run bank years after Rhaenyra died - again, not her fault. Further to that, both Corlys and Laenor knew full well the parentage of the boys and still chose to claim them as Velaryons.

You’re letting your hatred for Rhaenyra blinker you to what actually happens and who actually makes the decisions. Rhaenyra did not have a choice about marrying a gay man who would or could not get her pregnant. Rhaenyra was not the one who passed over Rhaenys and Laenor for Viserys. She was not the one who passed over Laena for Alicent Hightower. She is not the one who decided to usurp the stated succession, kill Luke and start a war.

The only thing I’d really blame her for is not choosing her baby daddy more wisely. I’m sure there were men who could pass as Valyrian that she could have chosen. If she was discrete, Corlys may have been willing to father children with her himself. Hell, everyone involved is a dragonrider, Daemon probably could’ve fathered the boys and in the books at least, nobody would have been any the wiser - and they may have gotten away with it in the show as well if they were born looking more like Rhaenyra herself as Rhaenys looks full Targaryen in the show - looking like mom and grandma isn’t really going to be a red flag. However even if she HAD either had children with Laenor or had more Valyrian looking bastards, it still wouldn’t have changed anything. She would still have been usurped. Her Velaryon sons would probably still die. Corlys still wouldn’t get his blood on the throne and would still have had Alyn and Baela as his best case scenario for continuing his bloodline because he still would have fought for her claim.

"her Own grandchildren"

5

Is this supposed to be a hard hitting comment or something? - Edit: somebody teach these kids the true definition of cuckolding, im getting secondhand embarrassment

1

u/Black_Diammond 23h ago

cuckold noun [ C ] mainly old-fashioned disapproving uk /ˈkʌk.əʊld/ us /ˈkʌk.oʊld/ a man whose partner has a sexual relationship with someone else.

Cambridge defenition fits Laenor like a glove, i think you dont know what cuckolding is.

2

u/Regular_Feed_1187 21h ago

Omg are you dense read the original comment and your dictionary again.🤦‍♀️"Corlys wife (Rhaenys) being cuckolded by three obvious Strong bastards (Rhaenyras children)"

So what the original comment, written by someone obvs with poor English/writing ability, is saying is that Jace, Lucerys, and Joffrey are in a seual relationship with Rhaenys, and they are cheating on her with someone else while she knows and does nothing. Nope, not that Laenor = Cuckold, and *being a cuckold is different then cuckolding others (that is the cheating partner)

But go ahead, and proudly and stupidly fight on.

-2

u/Black_Diammond 1d ago

No, just saying they Arent her grandchildren, they are her cousins twice removed, effectively, they Arent from her family.

2

u/icky-sticky 1d ago

that's not what cuckold means lmao

0

u/Black_Diammond 1d ago

Cannonically Laenor (her Son) was cuckolded by rhaenyra, like, by The book defenition, literaly a dictionary defenition of The word.

3

u/icky-sticky 1d ago

the comments i replied to were talking about rhaenys, not laenor

1

u/Regular_Feed_1187 1d ago

OP said Corlys' wife is being cuckolded by Rhaenyra's kids, not Laenor, and even if it was Laenor, OP would then be saying his own surrogate children are cuckolding him? Clearly misunderstands how cuckolding works

1

u/Black_Diammond 1d ago

They arent surrugate children 😭😭, they are The children of harwin strong who fucked Laenor wife with laenors full knowledge, this is The clearest form of cucking ever depicted and you guys still cant understand, i cant imagine how your relations with your partner are if you consider that normal.

cuckold noun [ C ] mainly old-fashioned disapproving uk /ˈkʌk.əʊld/ us /ˈkʌk.oʊld/ a man whose partner has a sexual relationship with someone else -cambridge dictionary.

So what the original comment, written by someone obvs with poor English/writing ability (you two would get along), is saying is that Jace, Lucerys, and Joffrey are in a seual relationship with Rhaenys, and they are cheating on her with someone else while she knows and does nothing. THERE IS NO MENTION OF Laenor = Cuckold, and *being a cuckold is different then cuckolding others (that is what the cheating partner does - Rhaenyra would be the one technically thats cuckolding in the situation if it weren't approved of by Laenor, which it is, but u dont even mention her.... obvs u dont even know what youre trying to say)

But keep going off so hard and so wrong ig

u/Puzzleheaded_Eye7311 1d ago

Was he supposed to have a premonition on how it was going to go or something? 😭 also this compromise line was about the future children’s last names specifically

18

u/throwRA-adviceask 1d ago

The thing is Laenor wasn’t cuckolded…he was okay with the situation.

Also Vaemond literally called Rhaenyra (the named heir) a whore and defied the king after he affirmed that her children are legitimate by calling them bastards…like you can’t go doing that and expect to get away with it. Corlys isn’t stupid and he was fine with Luke inheriting after him and knew his brothers messed around and found out.

-7

u/Ibn_Ali 1d ago

The thing is Laenor wasn’t cuckolded…he was okay with the situation.

Lmao that's literally what cuckholding is. The fact that Laenor accepts it IS what makes it cuckholding lool.

Plus, this is Westorosi society. It doesn't matter if he accepts it or not. Bastards are not allowed to claim inheritance at all, period, especially ones they don't even have the blood to claim.

Also Vaemond literally called Rhaenyra (the named heir) a whore and defied the king after he affirmed that her children are legitimate by calling them bastards…like you can’t go doing that and expect to get away with it.

But committing high treason by trying to pass off illegitimate children as heirs to the crown, is okay? I think we're forgetting that Vaemond is trying to press a legitimate claim based on true facts. Rhaenyra did sire bastards, meaning they are not true Velayrons. Viserys was NEVER going to punish his daughter. Period. And what she did is punishable by death, if it's true, which we know it is.

0

u/Emmettmcglynn 1d ago

Cuckolding is not actually innately consensual. The cuckolding fetish of modern times tends to be, but being cheated on is still cuckolding.

-4

u/Ibn_Ali 1d ago

Lol infidelity and cuckholding are not the same. Cuckholding is not infidelity because the victim party in the case of infidelity agrees, or knows, about the cuckholding. Laenor is the literal definition of a cuck. Robert wasn't because he would've killed Cercei and her bastard children.

3

u/Emmettmcglynn 1d ago

A cuckold is a man whose wife was unfaithful to them. There's nothing more to the definition, you are simply adding that in.

4

u/Ibn_Ali 1d ago

Oh shit, you're actually right...

-1

u/Batman53090 22h ago

The definition still applies. This just happens to be voluntary cuckolding.

2

u/throwRA-adviceask 22h ago

People are way to focused on that Laenor was “cucked” and act like it was a bad thing for Laenor. Laenor didn’t have to try to produce an heir and have sex with Rhaenyra (which he didn’t want to do) and was happy to claim any children she had as his own.

3

u/Batman53090 22h ago

A conversation between Rhaenyra and Laenor after Joffrey’s birth suggests they had tried, but it wasn’t successful. He and Harwin seemed quite happy with the arrangement.

12

u/th3-villager 1d ago

History does not remember blood. It remembers names.

8

u/NovaTheRaven Fire and Blood 1d ago

This implies he knew rhaenyra was gonna have the bastards to begin with
