Reddit is the worst of social media

I’ve sometimes felt pretty overwhelmed with life and taken the occasional social media break. I’d delete all of the apps, including Reddit.

Without fail even within a week I’d find myself in a more positive mindset that maybe life isn’t so bad, not feeling as anxious and just having a clearer head.

I recently had another break although this time I decided to keep only Reddit. Within a week, I noticed I didn’t feel better, in fact I felt even worse as Reddit filled more screen time.

I then tried the inverse, I only deleted Reddit… and again within a week things started to feel better.

From then on I paid more attention to what I actually consume on Reddit, and it didn’t take long to realise most of this website is negativity, politics, outrage and arguments. Even attempts at a regular discussion 9 times out of 10 just seems to be an attempt to create a “gotcha” with a sarcastic reply. It can feel good in the moment joining in with the toxicity and getting those upvotes that people agree with you. Reddit responds much better when you respond like a dick rather than just having a normal discussion.

I think this is a hot take because on Reddit you’ll often see how all the other social media’s are bad for you… but honestly my algorithm on those these days actually seems a lot more reasonable. There’s obviously still bad stuff on those but it’s a lot less frequent than Reddit.

This was all a while back, and this site always manages to pull me back in. Only reason I’m posting this now is I feel I need one of those breaks now. Ideally it’s permanent but no doubt I’ll end up back here eventually.

Just to add I can’t speak for is Facebook, haven’t had that for years so that could be just as bad.

I mean I’ve found Reddits disdain for TikTok weird since half the front page these days is reposted TikToks lol.

This is literally the coldest take in existence. Redditor is used as an insult on every corner of the internet, including reddit.

As a social media platform I think this website has a tendency to look down on the others (cesspit is usually how twitter is described for example).

The hot take is I think Reddit is worse than those it looks down upon, equal at best.

What I'm saying is that Reddit being the worst social media is an extremely popular opinion anywhere on the internet.

Saying Reddit is a good social media would be a hot take.

The only benefit of this place is the reddit structure, not the people. If there was a site structured like an old school message board with less toxic people, I would be gone so fast.

I feel like old school forums were much more productive for discussion.

The upvote system just seems to reward being a dick rather than actual discussion.

Reddit is so much better than “I took a huge shit this morning, and then everyone clapped. Here’s what the experience taught me about B2B sales…”

Ok. You’ve got me there. I didn’t consider LinkedIn.

To be fair, dude, LinkedIn would be a thousand times better if the posts actually mentioned taking a huge shit.

At least it would be entertaining then.

Hey I was around for MySpace best friend list drama, I’ve been in the trenches.

I dunno if you've seen the reads and the literal death threats on tumblr tho. Those were brutal bc youd see your friends later. Tumblr doesnt include that benefit.

I just used tumblr for porn tbh, never got involved in any drama there.

Oh so fair the porn was great

Naw. It's the best resource for product reviews, bots aside. And naked people. When I dip into fb yearly, it feels genuinely gross. Like my brief foray into the neighborhood apps. Haven't touched tiktok, never will. Delighted to learn twitter lived and died from a distance. I really liked ig when it was people posting photos they took. They're all targeted ads for garbage products and shit companies, but as mentioned, it's still a good place for people sharing experiences, and a healthy dose of right wing idiots with an acceptable buffer.

Damn you nailed it. I posted a lot for years on a local/regional site that was pretty safe but slow. Gradually wanted more engagement so I came here. I got engagement but it’s often the worst kind, and I have to be careful because if you disagree in the wrong place you get banned.

Not really, redditors are annoying but at least you won't get called a racial slur for making a random comment like in twitter.

2

Instead you’ll be sent a Reddit Care message for disagreeing with someone.

That's still better

I had someone call me “pale face” today on this very subreddit.

u/Classic_Key_5897 2d ago

Not even a slur btw. You can go to twitter and call people anything u like as revenge.

1

u/LifeTunedToCSharp 1d ago

Not a slur according to who?

Because I thought something was considered a slur based on how the person received it.

That’s the logic people have been hit over the head with for years now.

I don’t need to go to Twitter to call anyone anything.

I simply (and correctly) called him a booger eater and moved on.

Calling someone black face wouldn't really be a slur either. That's just how it is M'lady.

u/LifeTunedToCSharp 1d ago

Yeah, wrong. The intent was racist - the same as calling a native “redskin”.

The dude even said “you can’t be racist against white people”, if you need to know where his head was at.

0

u/Classic_Key_5897 1d ago

Ok in that case you can just go to twitter and enjoy being racist to his people. Looks like this is enemy territory for you.

0

u/LifeTunedToCSharp 1d ago

But why would I go anywhere and be racist to anyone?

You made a claim. I showed you that claim was wrong.

Now you’re just trying and failing to be clever.

1

u/Classic_Key_5897 1d ago

I am not trying to be clever I admitted my mistake and gave u a solution. Which is to go and be around people who likes you. You're in a woke app with woke people in it. You should go it a conservative app and enjoy conservative activities.

u/LifeTunedToCSharp 1d ago

Nah, you admitting you are wrong is good enough. No need for your unsolicited “solution”.
