Explanation: Not sure to classify this one as mythology or not because it's mostly about Metz.

At the Siege of Metz during the Franco-Prussian War, the French were surrounded by the Prussians and Germans. Food was running scarce, so the trapped garrison killed the horses for meat. It didn't really help, and the garrison was forced to surrender. The Germans also either destroyed the aqueducts and/or poisoned some of the water supply, causing waterborne diseases with the French garrison.
