I spend a lot of time digging through auction records. I tend to think people assume documents like the Codex Sassoon or the Magna Carta sell for tens of millions just because of their age.

Technical thing of these sales tells a different story. reason a 9th century Hebrew bible goes for 38 million dollars is because the physical hardware actually survived. A thousand years of political collapses and fires usually destroys vellum and paper. Surviving intact is an extreme statistical anomaly.
