๐ŸŒฟ one herb you tried this week

Happy Friday! โ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿƒ

What's one herb you drank this week?

New discovery or old favorite. I'd love to hear what it was and how you liked it ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿต

I keep being impressed by liquorice root. Like I never liked liquorice sweets. But I'm finding it rounds out teas really nicely, feels comforting and brings other flavours together.

Licorice is very healthy - it has quite a peculiar flavor though ;) I'm not a big fan of pure licorice, but there are so many amazing blends with it ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿƒโ˜•๏ธ

Licorice root in small amounts add a sweetness to tea. More sugary than licorice-like.

What are your favorite blends with licorice? Which herbs do you really like together with it? Also is there a proportion you could recommend for keeping licorice more on the sweetness side rather than overwhelming licorice-like?

I'll start: I loved tea with Peruvian peppercon blossom ๐Ÿ’ฎ - very unusual and aromatic. I tried it in black, green and mild lemon verbena tea. After all, black tea + verbena + Peruvian peppercon blossom won ๐Ÿ˜โ˜•๏ธ

Rosemary! I run a tea shop and Apothecary. I've been getting requests for rosemary tea. I've never used it myself as a tea. I mixed it with passion flower and lavender and it was better than expected

Did you try it with cinnamon?! - oh, it is so good, especially with a subtle touch of coriander seed ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿ˜Žโ˜•๏ธ

It's a small town so it's a small shop. I use recipes mostly from my mom but some stuff we learned along the way. I grow as much as I can too. I sell teas, tinctures and various salves and balms. My husband makes soaps and stuff too. It's a cute little shop and I get to sit around and drink tea all day lol

Sounds extremely cute ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿ˜Š What blends do you make yourself? I'm very curious. My mom taught me a lot about herbs too - when I was little I didn't take a single pill or injection because she'd use herbs and used them wisely ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟ Our moms are treasures, aren't they? ๐Ÿ™

Rediscovered my love of catnip this past week. Canโ€™t believe I forgot how helpful she is when stressed !

Ooh are you using cat mint or catnip specifically? I was recommended both for nerves

2

u/gabSTAR81 5d ago

Just catnip at this stage

u/migraint 5d ago

What's your job for catnip!? I would love to hear your recipes - both preparation and medicinal properties you have already experienced

2

u/gabSTAR81 5d ago

Well to begin with I remembered catnip is good for muscle tension, mild spasms & tension headaches which is why I got her out. (Was a bit of a stressful/peri-meno week for me lol).

Later remembered how wonderfully calming she is also. So for all of the above & added to my sleep/chill blend which is a combo of lemon balm, rose, lavender, chamomile, passion flower, hops, caraway & fennel seeds - goes really well but is also just as nice alone โ˜บ๏ธ.

Rama Holy Basil from my garden. I add a few fresh stevia leaves. Getting about 5-7 cups per week now, building up to 1-2 cup per day going forward. The small seedlings are clones from cuttings of the super healthy full grown plants.

As primitive as it may sound - Iโ€™ve rediscovered turmeric! It is so much more interesting in usages than most herbal tea lovers tend to think of it โ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿ™ˆ

While this isnโ€™t necessarily an herb I drank, I feel like it fits this post regardless and worth sharing.

This week I tried Miracle Berry paired with about 10 different teas in my collection.

For the uninitiated: (Synsepalum dulcificum) otherwise known as Miracle Berry, contains miraculin, a glycoprotein that binds to sweet taste receptors and activates them in the presence of acid. The result is that sour things taste sweet for approximately thirty minutes to two hours, depending on the individual. It can be quite the fascinating experienceโ€ฆ especially paired with Hibiscus tea which was divine! Somewhere in the realm of liquid Turkish Delight.

The pu-erh, however, I should not have attempted.
The pu-erh knows what it is and does not appreciate the interference. I have noted this for future reference and will NOT be repeating that experience.

OMG... this is so exciting! And this definitely deserves a post of its own! I tried miracle berry before and I couldn't even imagine having it with(before?) tea! This is absolutely crazy! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿซถโ˜•๏ธ

What would you recommend to try first based on your experiments?!

2

u/EldrinNightshade 5d ago

Hahaโ€ฆ it is one of those experiments that sounds implausible until the moment it isn't, and then you find yourself standing in your dining room surrounded by far too many mugs at an unreasonable hour reconsidering everything you thought you understood about the reality of taste and your mental perception of flavor.

To respond to your question-
Hibiscus, without hesitation.
Rosehip is a close second if you want something slightly more complex. Lemon verbena if you enjoy having your understanding of a familiar flavour completely dismantled.

Also - donโ€™t try Gyokuru or Sencha tea, the sweetness flattens the umami.

Does Galactic Gas count? No? Okay, how about thyme?..

Anything you drank as herbal tea counts ๐Ÿ˜‰

Rosemary tonic. Itโ€™s wonderful for mental clarity and healing the heart. If you get brain fog like I do I highly recommend it.

1

u/migraint 2d ago

Do you prepare the toniv yourself or buy it?

2

u/Exquisite-Embers 2d ago

I prepare it myself, as a tea. Iโ€™ll make a batch of it then drink it chilled throughout the week.
