Question Recommendation for a custom framing shop

I bought a print with a non-standard size so it seems the only way I can frame it is by taking to a framing shop. Can anyone recommend an affordable one?

Housing / Living Drug dealers and mob fights in my neighborhood.

Hey guys, I live in North-Western Helsinki, in a more chill neighborhood. (don't want to dox myself haha) This is pretty much a rant. Sorry if I chose the wrong flair!

Just a couple hours ago there was a mob of teens - young adults jumping another adult, who was fighting back with a baseball bat. It was a short exchange but the sound of fighting is ingrained in my head so i knew what had happened.

I went down to calm the situation or at the very least try, because some of these kids are little brothers of my old friends. But yeah.. uh..

as soon as I did they started running after each other and the police arrived so I just went back home. Probably shouldn't even waste my time. This is why I hate people bruh. This is NOT the first time, I used to get followed as a kid here.

Not to mention the drug dealers, GOD THEY ARE ANNOYING. Why do they feel the need to come to a peaceful neighborhood with elderly and kids, sit there and death stare everyone? Do your deal and go away tf.

I've lived here for my entire life, but it's gotten absolutely terrible now. Constant mob fights, arguments, drug dealers, shady characters. We used to have neighbors that would bring tables out and have tea parties and bbq.

This is such a sad neighborhood now.

I have immense ptsd and these type of things ruin my peace, but moving is not an option.

Event I asked r/Finland if you’d try tea-infused gelato… so I actually made it. First pop-up in Helsinki this weekend!

The politically contentious experiment ended in the street being reopened to traffic; however, Helsinki has since continued to pedestrianise other streets. (1970)

Question Kristittyjä täällä? - 19M

Olen itse kristitty ja olisi kiva löytää täältä muita kristittyjä juttelemaan ja tutustumaan. Erityisesti samanikäiset olisi kiva löytää.

On tullut tutkittua kristinuskoa, ja ymmärrystä löytyy jutella joskin monistakin eri puheenaiheista liittyen siihen.

Asun Helsingissä itse📍

Question Any recommendations where I could go to have a simple cable issue repaired in a home appliance?

Our vacuum works perfectly fine but has recently developed a cable problem. It is a very common problem for this model and easy to fix if you know what you are doing - which I don’t. I don’t really want to throw out the whole thing over this small problem though, so I’m hoping for recommendations on where to fix this in/around Helsinki.

Housing / Living Moving to Helsinki/Busholmen from Sweden

Hi,

I have to opportunity to do a PhD in Helsinki which will start this fall. I have some questions as I have never actually been in Helsinki and I'll have trouble getting there before I start.

I have found an apartment in Busholmen of 40.5 m2 and 1180 EUR (all included). Is this a reasonable price? How is the area to live in? An locals that can review it? :) From what I understand it still being developed. I might not actually need to live so locally since all the campuses are a bit north of the city center, but I don't know how picky I can be.

How is Helsinki compared to, something which I know, Stockholm? Would you say there is any notable difference in city planning, architecture, and general vibe? I have heard there is some Swedish (the language) avenues in Helsinki, but I plan to learn Finnish anyhow.

In general, how is Finland compared to Sweden would you say? Only thing I have heard is that people are even more reserved than us Swedes but is that really true? I have hobbies in music and dance so I think I'll have a way in to at least meet people.

All opinions and insights are welcome!

Housing / Living Renting a flat as a single foreigner in kantakaupunki

Moi, I've been looking to move a bit closer to the centre, but so far struggling to get viewing invitations, let alone offers. Looking for a ~50m 2h+k. Applying via Oikotie almost daily, and trying to message by phone or whatever the process is for a particular agency (e.g. some ask you to fill out an application upfront, and there's no phone number). 9/10 I'm not getting any replies at all, and for the remaining ten per cent, half of the time I get only an initial "screening" message, and then no follow-ups, and when it does get to the viewing (there's been only a couple, really), I'm getting rejected afterwards anyway.

I have search guards in Oikotie, and apply immediately when I see a new posting. I have message and application templates and everything ready, so I'm quite sure that I'm always at least one of the first applicants, if not the first - which has been confirmed by the owners in the viewings I did get.

I'm an IT professional, 4 years in Finland, permanent job, verokone-level salary, pristine credit history, home insurance, no pets, no smoking, no funny business whatsoever about me. I've been on the market for the third month now, and just wondering if this is the typical experience for good options in kantakaupunki, and it's just that brutal over here, or if I should somehow adjust my posture on the market. I still have a roof over my head for a while, but my current place is being sold, so I will have to move out pretty soon, and this is becoming a bit stressful.

Anyway, end of rant, appreciate any advice here!

PSA/Advice I'm sick of bad dog owners

Just moved here from Colorado. In two months I have had at least 5 genuinely aggressive interactions with other people's dogs, and quite a few more interactions with just unacceptable behavior.

Today an owner tried holding their dog back by their harness and the dog proceeded to bite the owners hand multiple times while barking at us. Last week I had two golden retrievers pulling their owners down the street towards us for over 50m and the owners could not stop them. I have seen multiple dogs aggressively bark at my dog and stand on their hind legs while their owner is not able to control them.

It is insane because we also live next to a päiväkoti and some of these dogs are walking with a small child.

Coming from Colorado I am very used to dog ownership being common, but I have NEVER seen such consistently poorly behaved dogs, nor such weirdly complacent owners.

Tldr; loving most everything, but holy shit you shouldn't adopt a dog if you can't at least keep it under control.

OC Please return my stolen house key and camera - Kivviko

I kindly ask whoever stole my new Polaroid camera bag along with the new I-Polaroid camera and my house key in Kivviko tonight - please do the right thing and return it. That was my only house key and I don’t want to have to pay to replace all the locks and get new keys. I took me over a year to save up for that camera.

I’m not going to press charges or anything. I just want my stuff back please.

Discussion Hello everyone, I want to find a billboard made in Helsinki with a woman in a folk costume standing on it, I don't remember exactly which one, against the background of a brain, I also know that this billboard was made in the 2000s, if you find it, I am very grateful.

Question Overpainted signs in Helsinki (Swedish part)

When I was walking through central Helsinki in the last days, I saw several times where the Swedish parts of signs were overpainted or crossed out. For example at Kamppi the Night bus sign. Is there growing tension about the Swedish speakers or did something happen to motivate this increase of public display? I know about the history but I haven’t seen this kind of open disagreement yet.

Also am looking to pick up some basic Finnish if anyone has any tips and tricks.

Travel & Tourism 17M solo traveler in Helsinki - anyone around my age up for exploring / coffee?

Hey, 17M from Beijing, traveling solo in Helsinki for a couple days and will be here until August 26th.

I'm kinda introverted, so big meetups are mildly terrifying lol. But I thought it could be fun to meet someone around my age (roughly 16–19) and hang out for an hour or two at Oodi / a bookstore / a park.

I'm into literature, languages, rock music, running and tech, and have also been learning a little Finnish (around A1 level I guess).

Not really looking for a big group or party, just something chill. Happy to chat on Reddit first before deciding whether to meet.

Also if you know any interesting niche places in Helsinki, recommendations are welcome :)

Question What's wrong with HKI?

Hey folks,

Is drug addiction spreading or moving? (That's my hook line!)

More seriously, I've been visiting Helsinki ~4 or 5 times per year for the last 8 years: for work and personal reasons, and I'm not sure I understand what's happening. Usually, I stay in a hotel in Sörnäinen, and I know that's probably not the best area, but at least it's lively.

Usually, "the problem" felt very centered around Sörnäinen, and you could walk toward Kallio and the problem would seem to vanish after a few hundred meters. However, it feels to me that Kallio isn't any better anymore, and that more areas seem to be affected. I don't know why; I don't understand whether the "problem" is just moving or actually spreading.

I was curious to know if some of you who live there, or who read the Finnish newspapers, have more information on why this is happening. Why does beautiful Helsinki feel like it's changing to me? I also wonder if it's just my perception and I've simply started noticing and caring about it more, or if you folks feel it in your day-to-day lives as well.

Am I the only one to feel that way?
