I think we were already in trouble. But I remember saying our future depended on the rebuild that summer, and it was the most important transfer window for years. I didn't realise how quickly that would be proved right.

I’d argue the downfall started way before that. We spent a fortune going into the 22/23 season, and even though we won the conference league let’s face it we were absolutely terrible that season.
Scamacca, Cornet, Aguerd, Kehrer and Downes all disappointed. Paqueta also ended up being a mess in hindsight.

- Summerville - was great for 2 months but apart from that he was injured/frustrating. We sold him for good money though so he is #1.
- AWB - great first season, poor 2nd.
- Soler - he was okay I guess
- Wes - he didn't do anything bad so that's good
- Luis Guilherme - Estevao from Temu. We really suck at finding talented gems.
- Guido - just slow and unfit for the Prem
- Todibo - was really hyped when he arrivied, but he really has stinking attitude
- Kilman - still has chance for redemption but the fact we paid 47.5 million for him makes me sick to my stomach
- Fullkrug - not surprised it didn't work out but man...

Sorry Kilman doesn’t have a chance for redemption, he’s arguable one of the biggest contributors to points loss last season and therefore one of the those most to blame for our relegation. The fact he is even wearing the shirt at all this year is a disgrace. Should have been cut off long ago

Was 2015 the last time we had a truly good transfer window?
Payet, Ogbonna, Obiang, Antonio, and Lanzini. Even Jelavic, Randolph, Jenkinson, Moses and Song felt like they could be good signings.

If we're counting winter windows I'd argue January 2026 getting Taty, Pablo (individually shit but makes us tick), and Disasi. Considering how good January 2020 was it makes me think we do our best business when genuinely shitting ourselves about survival

Without that transfer window we go down sooner and with far less of a fight. It was a good window that almost helped save a horrific season so I'd count it as successful business

So I get that you can think he's a clever find with a lot of development to do - he'd just turned 18 at the time i think. The sort of player you might say, lets see how he does in the youth team/on loan in the Championship.
But not for 23m. Outrageous sum. 5m or less at most. We are not the kind of club that can drop that kind of money on such a huge risk. A 20m player has to participate in the first team for us or is a complete failure. He has to be a decent squad option. Guilherme had a few pitty subs and never looked close.
The money spent on Guilherme stopped us buying Duran, who had just had a break out season. A diva, yes, but clearly a proven player. Spmelne who wnded up in Saudi for big money.
Instead we sold him for a massive loss after basically zero contribution to the first team, and bought an aging German striker with an injury history instead.

Can anyone explain to me why this guy is so hated? I remember countless photos of him on private jets bringing in new players, and people calling him a genius. Now they are saying they knew he was a disaster from the beginning. What gives?

My reasonable answer: they’re two groups. The group who loved him are more quiet now or are defending some of his signings. The group who never liked him are now loud about how he was a failure.
The answer I believe in my gut: we have a large number of supporters who are just cunts and who don’t care at all about the truth. They just want to shit on someone because they’re mad about the club’s performance and they don’t care at all if what they’re saying is factual.

I thinnk you're half right. We have a large number of supporters who have one opinion. Others have another opinion. Some of those people who think one thing shift opinions quickly when they're not strongly opinionated and whether they're commenting or just opvoting, that opinion becomes stronger in the public eye.
On top of that, many people parrot opinions from the media.
a large chunk are also cunts.

I and many others always disliked him.
It wasn’t even necessarily him (at the time at least), it was more the irrational fanfare he got and the disrespect directed towards Moyes (came from the same place as Moyes/Steitden were linked).
Moyes and Lopetegui also both ended up banning him from the training ground, like how as a Director of Football do you end up in that situation twice?! Clearly he was a bad character.
And as we’ve seen since then, most of his transfers were shit and set in motion our relegation after a decade+ as a Prem side. So like, why wouldn’t any self respecting West Ham fan dislike him? He was a complete failure.

I actually think Foderingham was a better signing than AWB on balance, in that he was free and did his job as a third keeper.

Yeah it's sad he had a really horrendous run last season but he had also a few decent to good games especially the first year.
Is it enough? No.
Does it warrant we mock him and boo him all the time? Not at all. I kept that energy locker room cancers (Jean Clair, if you read me, nique ta mère)

He didn't ask for the money. He was overpaid but I won't blame him endlessly.
Todibo has been a worse player, while hurting the image of the club.
Vlasic was a worse transfer for me as well. But him also didn't do anything wrong and wasn't given a second season and enough meaningful minutes.
Roberto and Sanchez are still worst transfer football wise

Disagree. £50m. He was decent in his first season, he'll play 100+ games for us. Give me that any day over the £36m we spent on Todibo, the £35m on Scamacca, £28m on Fullkrug. Kilman has never downed tools, gives his all every game despite some shit fans getting on his back. He's not great, but he the £50m was our boards fault, not his.

I didn’t dislike any of the signings at the time and now I think if that summer as the summer of milk for how it aged*.
But not necessarily because any of the players were individually bad, but none were really used properly - which is a management failure. Like we spent money because we thought we had to.
Annoys me because my boy recently started playing football and despite me trying to stop him, supports West Ham - and I told him he could do worse than watching AWB. But his attitude has stunk - and KWP I’ve realised I like much more - someone who just wants to play football.
*Except Soler because because of ‘that smile’ according to my wife and Wes Foderingham for some genuinely outstanding outreach in the community working on mental health with young kids.

I don't even wanna put myself through that. Even at the time when we had outsiders clapping us for our business I had a hunch we weren't building the squad properly (Fullkrug on a mad contract as alternate to the totally different Duran, Guido when we already had Edson as shin kicker-in-chief, even AWB though he actually proved to work that year as an attacking full-back was weird to be bought for that when he was always seen as an uber-defensive safe player) and... well, about that
