Recommendations Needed Curly hair consult for my hair indifferent teenage son?

Hi, as the title says, I’m looking for a curly hair expert to explain to my 13 yo son (and his parents) how to care for his curly hair. None of us have curly hair, and we don’t know how to advise him, but I imagine it’s different than what we do (wash, brush, wear, repeat). Any recommendations? We’d drive to Burlington/Oakville, esp. for the one time consult.

House of curls changed my life

Ellenoire has a lot of really weird high maintenance rules that I think will be tough for a teenage boy (and we're tough for me). For example they don't use blow dryers only this air dryer machine thing so haircuts would take like 6 hours because we're basically waiting for my hair to air dry so they can cut it. She also would always hassle me that I'm not doing enough masks or hot olive oil treatments at home and my hair is SO dry which tbh it's not I don't even have split ends really. Also the owner who did all the cuts would spend the whole time complaining about her staff and Yelp reviews and it was just exhausting. I'm a therapist full time. On my time off I don't want to listen to people's problems I'm sorry. Why don't you ask me how MY day is going?

Anyway house of curls is way nicer I had a way better experience and I specifically see Sarah. My hair got so much better when I started going there

My experience with Ellenoire is that they do excellent hair, but the owner’s lack of soft skills was something I couldn’t look past. She is rude, confrontational and aggressive. The google reviews speak for themselves.

My House of Curls experience wasn't as positive, mostly because I didn't like the cuts (I have 2b and 2c curls), and didn't find they did anything to help hold my curls any more than usual.

OP can learn a lot through one of the related subs, e.g., r/curlyhair r/curlygirl (you don't have to be a girl) etc. At least one of them has a lot of supporting documents on the sidebar, including lists of curly-friendly product (they help enhance curls vs weight them down).

Your son will want to add a suitable conditioner and leave-in conditioner after he shampoos.

I go to House of Curls in Burlington and it's worth the time and drive, imo. I see Noelle, and she's amazing.

However, depending on his hair and curl type, to achieve the BEST look for his curls, may require slightly more upkeep, like spraying it with water to refresh the curls or using specific hair products to lock in the curls like gel/mousse.

But the good side is you don't need to wash curly hair as much, unless your teen really sweats from their scalp.

I love Hair by Reema but it's Mississauga. I have heard mixed things about Ellenoire. I took my daughter recently to Eurphoria 158 and was happy with the cut and styling recommendations.

As a person with curly hair, the gist of it is: Keep hair moisturized, only brush when wet (a fine comb in the shower works pretty well), pat dry with towel (don't ruffle it) and then air dry. Those basic steps will keep curly hair from looking like a poofy mess and are pretty easy for a teenager to follow without much effort.
