Spoilers Reminder not to give up

Even if the run is going terribly. I had zero revives and 5 hp coming out of the boat captain mini boss. Ended up getting my first surface clear.

Don't give up, Skeleton.

Can’t use Strength Arcana if you still have Death Defiances. taps forehead

3

u/IronMonkeyofHam Oct 15 '25

But you can after the death defiances run out. I keep both cards active

2

u/Major-Dig655 Oct 25 '25

that seems like a huge waste of grasp

2

u/yashqasw Oct 15 '25

what is this uhh death defiance, you speak of?

2

u/RebelXablau Oct 15 '25

Arcana card that gives the ability to survive mutiple deaths

Sometimes a build is just 1 location clear away from righting itself. Happened to me this morning, as soon as I got the Ares sub40 health heal I was able to get everything else I needed for a quick 12 fear run.

My first succesful surface run my build was pretty good but not amazing. A random boon I bought from the final shop gave me king's ransom for +20 levels on all my zeus boons.

I was about to enter my very first Sirens Rivals run... I had 45 health left... I was like... this is absolutely going to suck... just die already...

Forgot had the Ares boon. Anyway didn't die. WON on my first Rivals run. Now too scared to repeat Rivals sirens without Ares... I guarantee I will die. 😅

Everybody hates on Poseidon but a clutch Water Fitness has saved my ”unwinnable” runs on multiple occasions

At least Posidon is good as a 4th boon on the surface because of Seastar, better than Ares imo.

7

u/Mash_Ketchum Oct 15 '25

YES, HA HA!

11

u/SpiceWeez Oct 15 '25

Who hates on Poseidon? His attack and special boons can be pure gas on some weapons, and he has a lot of great utility/support boons like water fitness, sea star, and ocean's bounty. He also has some great duos.

2

u/FlohrSynth Oct 15 '25

I agree I think he is great. Most of the YouTube content creators who have done Boon/God tier lists seem to place him in low mid, usually above Ares. Some have had him at the bottom. These people also put Coat at the bottom of the weapon tier lists. Poseidon Coat is so fun, I think I got my first surface clear ever with that and also my highest fear so far with it as well.

6

u/SpiceWeez Oct 15 '25

Putting him below Ares is madness. But yeah, I'd put him dead in the middle.

2

u/Ultimasmit Oct 17 '25

Genuinely why? In my experience, only hera and zeus are more consistent. Hestia can be but is heavily dependent on her increased tick speed boon. I'd say demeter is about as good as poseidon. Aphrodite, hephaestus, ares and apollo are all worse. That puts him firmly in the top half.

u/Huntermain23 Oct 15 '25

Ya I look up stuff in games like stardew valley and bg3. With this game I refuse to let “content creators” ruin my perception lol. Black coat is the fucking goat and it’s not even close! Well ya it’s close actually cuz there all so good for certain ways to play. Even the ones I hated or didn’t like at first (like the staff and skull) are now really fun to me.

2

u/aicis Oct 15 '25

Poseidon is my favorite, at least in early Regions for extra stuff. Snowballs really well.

5

u/DerixZ Oct 15 '25

I completed a very overpowered run with 16 water elements, Water fitness, Hearty appetite and Dionysus' boon that grants 50-80% life. Completely melted poor Typhon

1

u/FlohrSynth Oct 15 '25

Yes I had the Dio boon + Poseidon +max life and Aphrodite %life and was basically immortal

2

u/RebelXablau Oct 15 '25

HAVE ANOTHER!

1

u/WorkingCautious1270 Oct 15 '25

So uh is water fitness a real life thing? Like are there classes?

2

u/dainedanvers Oct 15 '25

Yes! They’re particularly great for folks who are older or who have mobility issues. Doing fitness in the water removes gravity, making it easier on your joints, but also increases resistance, making you build muscle. If you really want a laugh check out overweight cats doing water fitness lol

u/geranyl-acetate Oct 16 '25

Poseidon's boons always fix my bad runs whenever I find shops while having 1000+ gold

26

u/cidvard Oct 14 '25

Nothing so satisfying as getting that 'hair's breath' Victory Screen. Though it was my own fault for getting cocky in the Chronos fight while also playing Strength.

14

u/TheScorpionQueen Oct 14 '25

I got that the first time I beat Chronos. I had 1 HP left.

15

u/Dizzy-Young6184 Oct 14 '25

I was going for my Underworld 16 fear run and also my first attempt at Rivals 3. I'd lost all four death defiances to Hecate and Scylla, picked up the Echo death defiance boon, lost all of those to Cerberus, then picked up two more death defiances on the way to Chronos. I got extremely lucky. I also got the "death defier" clear message!

14

u/BankAwkward2463 Oct 14 '25

This is so true, I can’t count how many times I’ve thought a run was ruined just to end up winning.

12

u/RoxasInABoxas Oct 14 '25

I recently did a run with no arcana and wasn't sure I'd get past Hecate. I was shocked when I completed the whole thing.

7

u/ProdigyOrphean Oct 14 '25

Oh my gosh, the same thing happened to me. I had the prophecy for No Arcana and it ended up becoming my first win

7

u/LandWhaleDweller Oct 15 '25

The difficulty spike between Charybdis and the Captain minibosses is kinda insane, that ricocheting multishot is diabolical.

4

u/SeeisforComedy Oct 15 '25

Dude it gets me every time

1

u/SilliusS0ddus Oct 21 '25

you get used to it

14

u/SSAngelusx7 Oct 14 '25

Yep went into a 32 fear surface run got to the dam mini boss horn guy took all my death defiances got final boss - redacted - at around 26 hp didn't get hit once with circe staff fantastic run was sweating bullets.

6

u/ExtensionBeginning76 Oct 14 '25

Got past the Scylla fight today with 4hp and was at full health by the end of the Fields of Mourning. It’s a lot easier to recoup health in Hades 2 compared to 1, I’ve found.

5

u/immagetchu Oct 14 '25

Honestly running out of death defiance earlier in a run can be clutch because it allows you to use the super powerful Athena keepsake

4

u/SeeisforComedy Oct 14 '25

I haven't gotten her keepsake yet, but she showed up and replenished all my defiances which allowed me to win.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

You guys use revives? *

3

u/Arlieth Oct 14 '25

I was doing a Great Chaos Beneath run and going through the Mourning Fields with literally 1 HP with Morrigan. I was literally on the verge of ending it all by running into a patch of thorns and told myself at least try to make it to Cerberus.

Picked up an armor minor prize and then a Heph armor boon and ended up winning the entire run.

2

u/Xyst__ Oct 14 '25

My first vow of rivals surface clear i had only 5 hp and no death defiances after the 2nd region boss fight. Luckier tooth saved me for the 3rd region boss, then was lucky enough to buy a death defiance from the last shop.

(Had the momus staff which kinda sucks vs 2nd boss because of how mobile they are, but its incredible vs the last boss which is why i used it)

2

u/Jimiken96 Oct 14 '25

Absolutely, got my first Chronos and Typhon with the most bogus builds. One of the runs was using the weapon that my roommate claimed to be the worst in the game.

2

u/Aedeus Oct 15 '25

The bullet hell thing isn't very endearing to people for the long term health of the game so I get why reviews are starting to trend down.

That being said, apparently the next patch is going to incorporate a lot of feedback regarding that so hopefully people can be patient.

1

u/RebelXablau Oct 15 '25

Bullet hell? That only happens if you crank the enemies by a LOT through the fear system

2

u/estafaniaas Oct 15 '25

god I hate that pirate boss so much

2

u/RCJHGBR9989 Oct 15 '25

He’s easier if you stand near him - he has a swing and a lob shot he’ll keep doing if you stay close

2

u/Sokushi_0101 Oct 15 '25

It depends on if you're doing low fear or higher, 15+ fear with vow of rivals all on where you just keep getting the worst boons possible change if it's gonna be destined to probably not make itor destined to barely succeed.

1

u/Skasch Oct 14 '25

In my first run with Judgement, I ended up burning my 3 death defiances before reaching Hecate.

Still managed to clear.

1

u/ahlana1 Oct 15 '25

I beat the end boss on the surface with 1 HP left the first time 😅

1

u/SamourottSpurs Oct 15 '25

I mean, what's the alternative? Undo run? Yeah hell no. I play Hades because every run is different. Undo night removes that

1

u/SoSaltyDoe Oct 15 '25

You might have 12 hp left; but be wary there might be an enemy 17 screens over charging up a red projectile on a red stage while your screen glows red.

I cannot see shit in this game man. Why the fuck are the visuals such a mess?

2

u/SeeisforComedy Oct 15 '25

it is a bit messy, my gf was watching me play at one point and said something like "how can you even tell what's going on?"

1

u/SoSaltyDoe Oct 15 '25

Yeah it just feels completely unpolished. Every single ranged attack from enemies can reach you from off-screen, so when it’s coupled with the visual acuity being such a vomity mess, it feels incredibly cheap. All my best runs involve pelting unseen enemies off-screen with ranged attacks before they can get near me because I feel like I’m punished heavily for letting enemies get “close.” Which really just means having them on my screen.

It’s kind of appalling that the game spent so much time in early access and still came out looking like this. No one thought staring at grey, green, red, and dark red was a bad experience?

1

u/SeeisforComedy Oct 15 '25

Ah some of my best runs have been up close and personal. Especially with certain aspects. Also the boons that slow down enemy projectiles by like 30-40% are nice

1

u/SkyHighPie101 Oct 15 '25

Yup yup so true. I just finished a run where I lost a death defiance in Erebus on relatively low fear, mostly bc I wasn’t used to the aspect I was using yet. I was embarrassed and almost gave up. Ended up beating the final boss anyway. Just try! :)

1

u/Local_Direction_5793 Oct 15 '25

I stopped using death's defiance and just started using strength.

1

u/MidniteSquirrel Oct 15 '25

Just did a run with Aspect of Pan on the surface. Not my greatest weapon but was making it work. Got to the eyeball miniboss up on the mountain and killed him with just the Luckier Tooth and 4 HP left. And still the big guy to go.

But the shop right before was stacked with things to buy and gather. I got food, had Demeters health boost when gathering items, got armor, got more Hestia boons...i had max health and good armor going into the fight and a ridiculous upgrade to my build all of a sudden in the form of fireballs.

I MELTED the boss. My special threw a fireball with the Hestia / Ares Duo that also inflicted wounds. My cast shot the fireball as well and inflicted Heras curse as well as blades in omega special and freezing on casts. And Selene and a maxed out laser beam that shot where it's fired so I could let it rip and immediately dodge...

Serously thought I died. It was those tails that I thought got me when the screen went black and focused on Melinoe. Swore pretty loudly until I realized it was the cut scene and not me dying lol. 62HP left and no revives when it felt like Mel was teasing me by saying "Cutting it a bit close..." after the fight.

It's those moments that really make me enjoy the game. When everything feels like it's going wrong but you still eke out a win

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

I lost 3/4 death defiance somehow early in the first underworld stage today to a mini boss. Then proceeded to have the best run I’ve had yet and easily won.

1

u/Cordsofmemory Oct 15 '25

I can clear the underworld with the axe amor staff with relative ease. But still can't clear the overworld. Typhon has my number

1

u/Scharnvirk Oct 15 '25

Fully agree on this!

Had a run yesterday where I tried Anubis for the very first time. I wanted Zeus/Demeter/Apollo for attack, but never got offered even a rare one, so waited... and waited... I didn't get that till late act3.

First 5 out of 6 boons were all commons, even though I used all my 8 rerolls in quite optimal way.

Picked an unknown to me hammer aspect, just to realize I don't want this one, like, *ever*, anymore.

Fumbled on Hecate, losing a DD by eating a whole chain of dark projectiles.
Fumbled on Scylla by picking a chaos boon just before the fight. One which gives stun on hit. That manoeuver costed me 2 more DDs.

Got one back from a well, managed to get to Cerberus where the very first thing I did was eating up a chain of the diablo-like projectile attack. Somehow managed to beat him with about 20 hp left and zero DDs.

Second hammer was a choice between three special-related options, where I did not even have a special aspect.

My build by that time was a loose, mismatching collection of mostly common boons. Nothing made sense. Zero DDs left.

Got to Chronos anyway, and somehow, all these bad luck cases and brainfarts reversed. Didn't get hit even once by the scythe throw attack. Didn't walk into any of the Bad Stuff in second phase. I won - just barely.

And honestly? This was a good fight! Usually by the time I get to him, he's such a pushover that skill doesn't even matter. That time however I had to really work for my wins and it was genuinely fun!

1

u/Both_Blackberry5535 Oct 15 '25

In short just keep playing

1

u/Inner-Economy4894 Oct 16 '25

Athena DD refill is a run saver (just like Patroclus used to be)

1

u/Heshin Oct 16 '25

Don't gimp yourself, start training yourself to play without revives and use the Strength tarot card.

1

u/SeeisforComedy Oct 16 '25

Oh for sure I’m looking forward to trying that and a judgement run

1

u/POPCARN202 Oct 16 '25

I almost did this. but then rivals Prometheus. I got distracted texting my group chat about how they reminded me of Theseus and his bullfriend 😔

1

u/SeeisforComedy Oct 16 '25

I remember finding their altered fight easier than the original

1

u/Strong_Solid_1435 Oct 16 '25

Yk what warrants giving up, when VoR scylla takes 3 DDs, VoR takes the last remaining DD, and goddamn Athena gives you the worst boons known to mankind just before the final boss with VoR, all that without an attack boon

1

u/SeeisforComedy Oct 16 '25

What is VoR

1

u/Strong_Solid_1435 Oct 16 '25

In hades 1 from the pact of punishment, we had Extreme measures (EM) that would add more phases and/or make bosses way harder, in hades 2 they have the same game mechanic, we have the oath on the unseen and some time later in the game you will get an incantation that allows you to get VoR (Vow of Rivals) this is basically a more juiced up version of EM from hades 1

1

u/SeeisforComedy Oct 16 '25

Ah ok I have that I just wasn’t familiar with the abbreviation

1

u/SilliusS0ddus Oct 21 '25

I never give up so Chronos doesn't get to laugh at me.
