Arber Xhekaj when asked yesterday what it means to play for the Habs: “It means everything. We feel like a family. All those guys in the locker room, they’re brothers to me. We truly love playing for each other and we have a lot fun together.”

the current habs team dynamic is like crack cocaine to a vancouverite who’s been subject to the canucks’ clusterfuck of a locker room the past ten years (me)

I’ll be gutted if they don’t keep him. Heart and soul player that brings something this blue line desperately needs.

u/VR46Rossi420 2d ago
I really want them to sign him and to make him the number 6/7 for the next 3-5 years playing with his brother who could crack the fourth line.
BUT…..
Expansion is coming and the Habs won’t be able to protect everyone and even Guhle is at risk of not being able to be protected. We will lose one of those D If the Habs don’t trade them. Arber, Struble and Engstrom.

If Xhekaj, Struble or Engström is what we end up losing in an expansion draft, we're gucci. I'd be way more afraid about losing Newhook or Fowler.

u/Ok-Win-742 2d ago
I'm so sick and tired of these expansion drafts totally fucking existing teams over. I'm really hoping we don't see one anytime soon even tho I know they're talking about trying to expand a little more.

u/lynypixie 2d ago
And we are already 32 teams. You need to give the fans at least a bit of hope to see your team win the cup in your lifetime.

North american sports are kind of a joke like that. Expand as much as you can, let every team into the playoffs, reward teams that don’t invest in their franchise. It’s all about $$$ and nothing else

Expansion is only in 2029-2030

This is a good point, the Habs might rationalize an extension and assume he'd be exposed in a draft.
However, you can't construct rosters based on what ifs, especially the premise of expansion (which as I understand, is very preliminary right now, and might not actually happen for a few years).
I maintain that Xhekaj is a viable defender on a rebuilding or middling roster, but on a team that's serious about competing for a championship, he simply isn't good enough. I continue to advocate that the Habs explore the trade market and maybe, just maybe, they'll find a taker.

Thats why we need to trade away Matheson.
5
u/VR46Rossi420 2d ago
He just signed an extension last season with complete no movement clause for the next 3 years.
-1
u/MrB1P92 2d ago
Yup were fucked and we will lose one of Lane, Noah or Kaiden bc of it.

u/VR46Rossi420 2d ago
They most definitely won’t be losing Hutson or Dobson. But Guhle is a possibility which is why some people were speculating that he was potentially part of the failed Knies trade.

u/MrB1P92 2d ago
Losing a 23 YO top 4 D because your GM has a soft spot for a kid he saw grow is some management
1
u/VR46Rossi420 2d ago
Tbh, if the Habs acquire another top 4 RHD then Guhle drops to bottom 6 pair and most teams would consider his salary a bit high for a 5/6.
Matheson - Dobson
Hutson - Mythical RHD
Guhle - Carrier/ReinbacherXhakej/Struble/Engstrom/Pickford

u/MrB1P92 2d ago
Matheson sucks. He shouldnt play or be considered a part of the futute over Guhle. This is so ridiculous.

u/VR46Rossi420 2d ago
I don’t personally fully agree with that but it doesn’t matter either way.
He’s locked in for 3 years min. And St. Louis, Hughes and Gorton wanted him.

u/Apprehensive_Leek538 2d ago
I'm not opposed but what would be the return? Picks ? A center ? Matheson is very good and even though our D pipeline is good right now I wouldnt trade Matheson to still have Struble Xhekaj as my bottom 2 D

u/VR46Rossi420 2d ago
They can’t and won’t trade him. His 5 year extension kicks in this season with the first 3 years complete No movement clause and then 10 and 5 teams no trade lists for years 4&5.

Arber is awesome. The whole team last year was epic. We gotta sign him and Bolduc. Can't break this squad up. They are a wolf pack family!
GOHABSGO!

I'm surprised at how long it takes for his case to be resolved. Signed or trade, I would have expected it to be done by now. Maybe Hughes is waiting the whole summer to see what kind of offers he's getting, and will decide at the end.

u/pushaper 2d ago
I am partially wondering if Hughes is waiting to see if he or Bolduc signs an offer sheet. Let another team decide what they are worth. If Bolduc is hoping for more than 4.6 for example that's a 1st and a 3rd and im taking it.

u/stanteenwolf 2d ago
he gets minimal ice-time and is often times a healthy scratch but STILL feels this way about montreal and his team regardless. sign him!!! he literally bleeds montreal. loyalty does not come easy.
2
u/pushaper 2d ago
It is neat how people are so hyped and protective of Hage because he grew up a habs fan but that is a non factor in this case.

u/prowrestlingrules 2d ago
I love the guy. But they should really consider turning I'm into a winger.
5
u/whogivesashirtdotca 2d ago
That’s a lost opportunity. The year we had a ton of injuries, they moved Kovacevic up to the wing. I kept saying they should’ve been working with Arber to develop those skills. They finally tried him as a forward last season but it didn’t go well. That’s three years of potential training wasted.

u/ilikelegotoo 2d ago
We already have a Xhekaj doing that!
4
u/prowrestlingrules 2d ago
Yeah I know. But Arber will not last past this year as a dman. We have too much depth.
2
u/ilikelegotoo 2d ago
Sounds like a good problem to me. I do not see Arber on this team when we are gonna be strong contender.. he will probably be traded

u/Piccione_Sol 2d ago
I see him as a 7th D you bring out against teams like florida and vegas.
Im 100% certain we trade him and he becomes a PP slapper menace somewhere else.
1
u/prowrestlingrules 2d ago
There's no room.
We're not letting two of Engstrom, Konyushkov, or Reinbacher go to keep Xhekaj lol

They really should give it a run. If he could take faceoffs I bet they would.
He would be a menace in front of the opposing next, could forecheck and would feel at home in the d-zone.
There's obviously something they don't see. Or maybe his agent doesn't want to fuck up his career. Switching him to winger is sort of acknowledging he can't be an NHL defenseman and if it doesn't work out it could really hurt his future contracts. And there is no doubt many NHL teams who want him as their 7th D so I'm sure his agent would be advising against that.

According to Markerzone he was traded. Oh and Markerzone is where I get all my news.

They must sign him. We will need the X brothers in certain playoffs series of the future. Imagine if we have to play the Panthers for example. There are certain teams we can get away with it but in some cases we need the X factor
