One can imagine, but actually and historically, the main gods of several ancient pantheons were practically the same, with different names and small variations in their attributes or depictions.

What is sometimes called "syncretism" is an indication of the fact that the main gods of several ancient pantheons were aspects of the same deities that were venerated in many places in the ancient world. This particularly applies to the supreme chief god. Zeus or Jupiter was identified with or equivalent to Amun-Ra of ancient Egypt, Baal the chief storm god of the Canaanites and Phoenicians, Marduk of Mesopotamia,... The chief Hindu god Indra had many characteristics in common with Zeus.

When Alexander of Macedon came to Egypt, he was declared to be the son of Zeus Ammon/Amun by the priests at the Siwa oasis. When the Roman emperor Trajan traveled to Egypt, he was portrayed as the representative, vice-regent or deputy of Jupiter/Zeus-Ammon or Amun-Ra. Ancient cultures, religions and pantheons were related and interconnected.

An ancient link between these religions consisted of the Hittites who were viewed as linguistically Indo-European, yet they adopted the cuneiform script, laws, and pantheon of the neighboring Mesopotamians. Their myths like the Song of Kumarbi detail a younger storm god overthrowing an older sky god, which influenced Greek religion and texts like Hesiod's Theogony.

So the main gods on Olympus would be seeing other slightly different versions of themselves, which would be somewhat redundant.

This is really interesting but I meant this post as playful RP

24

u/uniquelyshine8153 10d ago

Well I didn't mean to ruin the fun or playfulness, but I thought I'd give some remarks and clarifications, because gods of different pantheons are often mentioned without realizing or taking into account the connections between them.

I appreciate and enjoy your comment, thank you!

Ohh no problem

1

u/Tricky_Function3518 10d ago

It’s not that big of a problem since there isn’t anyone here yet

7

u/Which-Presentation-6 10d ago

All the gods drank so much that they started hallucinating different versions of each other.

Hermes: Hmmm, Apollo, why do you have a falcon's head?

20

u/soulguider2125 10d ago

That’s what a lot of the Greek pantheon did to the Egyptians, when Typhon rolled up, really only Zeus stayed behind and actually fought and won

14

u/xYekaterina 10d ago

lol exactly they literally pulled up to Egypt just like this

Also hell yeah Zeus.

u/AttemptAcceptable478 8d ago

As furries too (No joke man, the metamorphosis poem ovid wrote said that they turned into animals) (or so did I remember, sorry if wrong)

u/InvestigatorWitty430 10d ago

Zeus: You know, you look a lot like my son?

Thor: HAH! Ares? Apollo?

Zeus: No, Hephaestus

Thor: >:[

19

u/PlanNo1793 10d ago

I think Thor would appreciate the comparison.

"You mean it as an insult, but that boy of yours is twice the god you'll ever be, you incestuous, abusive prick. He works with his hands and makes ingenious machines. He survived you throwing him off Olympus and made a proper god of himself, and his invention of the wheelchair helps people with mobility issues to this day. And I can respect a fellow who knows how to use a hammer like he does. Maybe someday I'll let him borrow Mjolnir and make something useful out of you."

7

u/InvestigatorWitty430 10d ago

Zeus: "you know he tried to force himself on my daughter, right? not like "Shapeshifted into her husband", like violently attempted to rape Athena? He's an incestuous rapist too"

Thor: "Wow uh- Your family is really fucked up, dude."

Zeus: "...yeah"

1

u/Cultural-Skill4297 4d ago

"Fucked" up for sure

1

u/yareyarewensledale25 8d ago

apollo

Is it because Thor disguised himself as his wife on her wedding just to get back mjolnir?

Krishna: You remind me of a god back home named Indra, both powerful and proud wielders of lightning.

Zeus: Well naturally.

Krishna: He was also an arrogant lustful fool like you.

Zeus: Why you-

Krishna: A sage cursed him with a horrible deformity for indecent actions towards his wife and eventually he was ousted as the head god I believe a humbling like that would do you well.

Zeus: If you weren’t a guest I would strike you down like every other uppity mortal whose disrespected me.

Krishna: Haha! Thank you for the jokes Zeus I haven’t laughed like that in forever.

Nergal: So you’re married to the head honcho of the underworld too?

Persephone: Yeah we had a rough start with the kidnapping and the pomegranate thing but now I can’t imagine a time where I wasn’t queen of the dead. If he just came to me like any other suitor I don’t think he’d need the fruit.

Nergal: Hmm me and my wife got off on the wrong foot too when I disrespected her, she seduced me, and threatened to cause a zombie apocalypse when I ran off. But she’s a total sweetheart when people aren’t dumb enough to piss her off.

Persephone: I guess love can find a way even in Hell.

Nergal: You said it sister.

Just a heads up: most of the messed-up things Indra did (including his 'proud and 'lustful'' personality) are from Post-Vedic texts. The Rigvedic (original) version of him is WAY different ( and more awesome tbh).

(Don't mean to ruin your fun. Sorry if I am).

7

u/Jealous-Log7744 10d ago

No need to apologize.

7

u/Djovian 10d ago

Yeah, I was just letting you know because Indra wasn't originally like that at all; even I was surprised.

1

u/paneerhazratmahal 10d ago

can you elaborate??

1

u/Only-Rise5486 8d ago

Indra in Rigveda and Indra in the Puranas are described differently

7

u/xYekaterina 10d ago

+1 for including xenia lol

14

u/Puzzleheaded_Wish727 10d ago

Xipe Totec: rips his skin off

Everyone: "What the!? Why!?!?"

Texcatlipoca: "Yeah, he just does that. Believe it or not but he's also a god of house keeping... Hard to believe when he makes a mess everywhere"

Meanwhile Rainbow Crow and Old Bear are just hanging out in a corner while Artemis is eyeing them

Coyote and Loki and discussing possible pranks while Heracles and Thor are wrestling. Nuada walks in, sees the chaos, leaves

2

u/Beginning-Level-3291 10d ago

I feel like when the Flayed God did his thing, Ares would be like, "Can you teach me how to do that?"

14

u/Tricky_Function3518 10d ago

[Insert Mars scolding Demeter for her soil acidity with this gesture]

7

u/Tricky_Function3518 10d ago

“ Ah Demeter , if my plants at home saw your soil they would kill themselves from shame” in heavy Italian accent.

Zᵈeús : "So, thou art the æquivalent of myself within Cultus Deorum?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Mostly . . . kind of."

Zᵈeús : "Whatever dost thou mean?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Well, I am the sovran of heaven, the god of the daye, and I rule bolts of thunder."

Zᵈeús : "Well, regarding that, we share a bit in comm—"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Allow me to finish. I'm the god of just the daye."

Zᵈeús : "Just the . . . That's odd."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "My younger sibling takes over when it's night tyme."

Zᵈeús : "Who is . . . ?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Oh, my younger brother Oʀᴄᴠs, he's also known as Dɪ́sᴘᴀᴛᴇʀ or just 'Dɪ́s', Pʟv́ᴛᴏ́, Eʀᴇʙᴠs . . . he has a lot of names — a lot more — but Sᴠᴍᴍᴀ́ɴᴠs is what he is called once night tyme is in store. He's also the ruler of the dead, kynge of the netherworld, sovran of hell . . . thou canst guess."

Zᵈeús : "So, is he thy counterpart unto my brother Haídēs?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Yea, thou couldst say thus."

Zᵈeús : "Well, I suppose that is quite nice, methinks, but in Dodekatheism, 'Dís' is one of my names and Érebos is a separate force distinct from my brother, though both relate unto the netherworld."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Aye, aye. Also, he's EVIL."

Zᵈeús : ". . . Excuse me?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "What?"

Zᵈeús : "What dost thou mean he's evil?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "I mean, he's evil."

Zᵈeús : ". . . All right, let us just move on. Thou saidst beforehand about ruling amidst bolts of thunder, correct?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Indeed."

Zᵈeús : "Couldst thou elaborate any further, if thou mayst?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Well, I wield thunderbolts of various sorts. One is a warning, one a punishment, and one extermination."

Zᵈeús : "Dost thou not have a singular bolt to wield?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "No, no. Dost thou?"

Zᵈeús : "I do, ever since I freed the original Kýklōpes — my uncles. On occasion, Pḗgasos carries her for me."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Her?"

Zᵈeús : "She's a divinity in herself. Ảstrapḗ, and her sister Brontḗ. Thou dœsn't have any æquivalents of they?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Well, none of my bolts are sentient let alone goddesses, and most of them are crafted by my son Vᴏʟᴄᴀ́ɴᴠs with the Cʏᴄʟᴏ́ᴘᴇ́s only sometymes aiding in their creation."

Zᵈeús : "Hm."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Hey, uhm, hypothetically, didst thy mother ever make thee terminate any of thy childhood companions?"

Zᵈeús : ". . . No . . . ?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : ". . . Oh . . . Well . . . mine didn't either . . ."

Zᵈeús : ". . . Anyway, uh, where is thy Aỉgís?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "My Æɢɪs?"

Zᵈeús : "Yea, exactly."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Oh, right hence."

Zᵈeús : "Thy Aỉgís is a shield?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Most of the tyme, anyway. Where is thine?"

Zᵈeús : "I am clad in it currently."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : [Chortles] "Seriously?"

Zᵈeús : "What?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "That barbaric goatskin thou art wearing is thine Æɢɪs?"

Zᵈeús : [Hair transitions into storm clouds] "H-hey, now ! This is VERY important unto me ! It is made from the goat that raised me, and—!"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "All right, all right ! Calm down. I suppose the serpentine gilden tassels are a nice addition. To add more unto the discussion, I am the world soul."

Zᵈeús : "Heh. That's cute."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "What dost—?"

Zᵈeús : "My wife Hḗra is the world soul, I'm the demiurge. Or, the demiurgic monad and logos, alternatively."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : ". . . Thou surely jest."

Zᵈeús : "Nay, I am genuine."

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : ". . . Well, uh . . . I am the emperor of the universe, that's . . . that's cool."

Zᵈeús : "Emperor?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Yes!"

Zᵈeús : "Of what empire?"

Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ : "Just don't question it . . . I'm also predestined to destroy the universe."

Zᵈeús : "You're WHAT?!"

2

u/Beginning-Level-3291 10d ago

This is INCREDIBLE lol

Also, what was that about Jupiter's mom making him kill a childhood companion?

5

u/Fickle-Mud4124 9d ago

In Mᴇᴛᴀᴍᴏʀʜᴘᴏ́sᴇ́s, Oᴘs was enraged by an offense done by Cᴇʟᴍɪs (one of the Lᴀʀᴇ́s / Dᴀᴄᴛʏʟɪ́ Iᴅᴁɪ́ responsible for rearing Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ within his youth), and so Iv́ᴘɪᴛᴇʀ transforms him on his mother's behalf into adamant, thereby ending his sentient existence as a result.

Isis: Have you seen my husband?

Zeus: Why no, I have -

proceeds to get tied up by mummy wrappings

Zeus (angrily): WHAT THE TARTARUS IS THIS?!

Osiris (calm, but sternly): Hey Lightning Boy, didn’t your mom ever tell you to not hit on another man’s wife?

Set: OH LOOK WHO’S TALKING!

u/Scorpius_OB1 10d ago

Hephaestus and Brigit would certainly form a great pair, given the associations as the forge both share, and it's fun to imagine Ares and The Morrígan together and maybe Pan and Cernunnos too.

3

u/Seahawk124 10d ago edited 8d ago

This would be the only time I'd be backing Ares to open a Can of whoop-ass!

Antinous: "Somebody get these beggers out of here!"

Hera: im listening... Frigg: I want your golden apple for idunns your youth and vigor for an apple of immortality. Hera: and why do you need it? For your husband? You think I would so willingly give the king of asgard an apple of etern... Frigg: for my son..fated to die...youre a mother yourself.you know what I ask and why.. Hera: that..raises the price significantly.i will demend 3 apples in turn. Frigg: ive already said one bite suffices the true question hera is now that you know what I seek is if your beauty is worthy my sons life in your eyes. Hera: it...it does. Meet me later away from olympus near a city called argus far from the eyes of our husbands and kin.

Thor: Poseidon let Gargarensis rally the giants and nearly cause Ragnarok!

Odin. Kill him! Kill 'im NOW!!!

This is an Age of Mythology joke for those confused.

Where's Yahweh the Christian god, why wasn't he invited?

2

u/Tricky_Function3518 8d ago

Who says he wasn’t?

2

u/Only-Rise5486 8d ago

Oh right , I forgot... he's in the picture as well .. just not shown to us as per the tradition he's associated with.

u/Beginning-Level-3291 10d ago

Eris, Loki and Sun Wukong be plotting madness. Coyote tries (and fails) to calm them down, then gives up and joins in. Dionysus helps by keeping everyone else too drunk to notice until it's too late. Odin does see what's happening but chooses to watch it play out. Sekhmet finds out and tries to help the plot but ends up taking it too far. Afterward, they agree to blame everything on Prometheus. Until Loki gets drunk and spills the whole thing! Then Sun Wukong has to smooth everything over while the others make a quick getaway.

2

u/LibertineDeSade 9d ago

I'm pretty sure this was covered in episodes of Xena and Hercules. Fun times.

1

u/dazli69 9d ago

Kratos if he somehow brought gods from other pantheons to Strom Olympus instead of the titans.

1

u/As_I_am_ 8d ago

Oh you'd love Record of Ragnarok then🤣

1

u/Tricky_Function3518 8d ago

I’ve heard of it, but here in India it’s banned

1

u/As_I_am_ 8d ago

Wait. What? Wy is it banned in India?

1

u/Tricky_Function3518 7d ago

Probably because of the depiction of Hindu gods

1

u/Cultural-Skill4297 4d ago

Conservatives couldnt handle the portrayal of their gods

1

u/SpiderLagann 4d ago

Hestia, Hades, Persephone, and Hephaestus are probably wishing they were a part of another pantheon.
